Prof. Venkatesh Raghavan was honored today with the 2012 Sol Katz Award
for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software during the inaugural
 session of the FOSS4G-India 2012 (http://lsi.iiit.ac.in/foss4gindia/)
 conference in Hyderabad, India. The
award was presented by Ravi Kumar and Vundavallu Aruna Kumar, Member of
Parliament. Venka received a memento on behalf of the OSGeo-India Chapter.
Venka's dedication to FOSS4G and his community work around the world,
promoting open source geospatial, is second to none. He has been
involved in OSGeo since the foundation was formed in 2006, and we are
lucky to have such a strong global voice in him. The OSGeo foundation
wishes to thank Venka for his wonderful dedication.

 Background

The Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software is
awarded annually by OSGeo to individuals who have demonstrated
leadership in the GFOSS community. Recipients of the award will have
contributed significantly through their activities to advance open
source ideals in the geospatial realm. The hope is that the award will
both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one
of its founders, for years to come.
Sol Katz was an early pioneer of GFOSS and left behind a large body of
work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities.
In the early 80's, Sol assisted in the development of a public domain
GIS package called MOSS (Map Overlay and Statistical System). This
software was arguably the first open source GIS software in the world.
Sol would later go on to release and maintain PC MOSS. He was also one
of the first involved in public data translator utilities. Utilities
that he developed for converting DEMs and reading SDTS files were
contributed back to the geospatial community, and are still available
today. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list
servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large.
Sol Katz's collection of GIS utilities at the BLM is still available at
ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/gis/. Sadly, after fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
for almost a decade, Sol died April 23, 1999 in bed. His legacy will
always live on in the GFOSS world.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Board Nomination: Hirofumi Hayashi

I second Hayashi-san's nomination.
He has been one of the longest key contributors of community building in Japan
since 2006.
His effort definitely made Japan chapter what it is today.

 Hello OSGeo community,

I am very happy to nominate Hirofumi Hayashi[1] for the Board of
 Directors of OSGeo.

Hayashi is a super-active member of the OSGeo-Japan chapter, tirelessly
working on planning and promoting FOSS4G events in that region. He is a
member of the OSGeo-Japan Board, and anyone who has ever attended a
FOSS4G-Japan event has been touched by his efforts, and of course his smile.

At the project-level Hayashi is a member of the ZOO Project PSC (often
works late at night to maintain its servers), has also committed several
enhancements to the OSGeo4W installer, and contributed translation
 changes in several OSGeo projects.

I believe Hayashi will be a great voice from the vibrant Japan chapter.

Oh, I must not forget: Hayashi's daughter Natsuki was the now-famous
hand model used in the FOSS4G-Japan 2008 mola-mola video! [2]

2012-07-23 Thread Toru Mori ( )
Cameron,

Thank you very much for the advice. We will contact the LOC and make use of the
potential presenters list.

I have got just one reply who wanted to attend both Tokyo (SotM) and Beijing
(FOSS4G) for now.
Anybody want to join the meet up in Tokyo?
We, Japan chapter would like to know how many people would join there.

 Toru Mori,
This sounds like a great initiative from Japan.
I suggest that you touch base with the Beijing LOC and ask if you can have
access to the list of people who have submitted presentations. You can then
contact each of them and see if they would like to present at your conference.

 Also,
Would you be interested in having someone present the OSGeo-Live
presentation? It provides a comprehensive, high level description of the
state of Open Source Geospatial Software.

We can use the same venue as SotM on 10th Sep., just after SotM for free of

We already booked 4 small rooms (40 persons) and 1 big room (200 persons).
Nothing particular agenda (presentation, workshop, code sprint, sushi party
etc) has not been planned so far.
We don't have extra budget for it, so we cannot pay travel and accommodation
cost. Also we don't have enough human resources as other local chapters do.
However, we want to have something international meet up in Far East Asia.
All thoughts about the meet up are appreciated.
And, we want to meet not only participants of SotM but also who have planned
 to visit Beijing.

We want to know how many people show interest in attending our meet up and
please tell us what you want to do there.
We will arrange the plan hearing your voice.

BTW, OSGeo Japan will hold FOSS4G Tokyo/Osaka 2012 conference in November.
This is annual conference for local audience with only few presentations in
English from overseas guests that we are expecting to have at the annual
 meeting in November.
