Jody, The cost of including documentation for libraries (and other
projects) is that with each release someone needs to verify that the
documentation hasn't become dated, and update where required, then
trigger translators to update their pages.
The question is, do we have the volunteer capacity to do this task for
each release, for each library? (At the moment our current volunteer
base is struggling to keep up).

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Reducing scope of OSGeo-Live for next 11.0 release

2017-04-19 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
In addition to my previous post:
Instead of releasing one OSGeo Live every year, one might also release a
Spring/Summer edition focussed on Desktop GIS and a Autumn/Winter edition with
mainly server GIS.
In that way the workoad is a little more spread throughout the year than in
case of one annual "complete" edition.

That fits nicely with the 32/64 bit proposition: for the Server edition 64 bit
is fair enough, for the Desktop edition one might consider supporting 32 as
well as 64 bit.

(and of course we can still deliver the Desktop/Spring edition in a double CD
Jewel Case that has the ability to store the Server/Autumn edition as well)

Gert-Jan

From a education/training perspective i think lowering the release frequency
of OSGeo Live to a yearly base will be helpful esp. if we are planning to
build educational materials to link OSGeo Live for the future. I am ccing
GeoforAll lists as well as there might be other views/opinions.

Hi OSGeo-Live team and others,

1. Frequency
In order to reduce the workload one might consider to lower the release
frequency to a yearly base.
(In which case I'd also suggest to name the version after their year of
release: "OSGeo Live 2017" etc..)
For my purposes it doesn't add much value to have a new version every 6 months.

2. In/exclude projects
Given the fact that OSGeo Live serves as an introduction, I think the libraries
are far less important to include.
