sounds like the DateTime/Plugin.pm file went missing somehow. however, having

The time and date option is no longer available under my
player's screensaver selections. All that is there is:

-Analog VU Meter
-Digital VU Meter
-Spectrum Analyser
-Now Playing
-Now Playing (Jump Back On Wake)

I tried your suggestion to have it "forget" my player and
reconfigure it. That did not work either. I then downloaded
the latest nightly and installed it. Still no date and time
option is available.

As I said, this worked fine up until last night. I forgot to
mention that I did change my player's name last night (from
"Squeezebox" to "Living Room".) I'm not sure how that would
screw anything up. For grins, I tried changing the name back to
"Squeezebox" but that didn't help.

[slim] Re: Stream slimserver to PDA (Pocket PC)

2005-04-24 Thread Howard2k

It's working. I don't know what it was. I left Slimserver disabled for
the last couple of hours and just restarted the server and it's not
being reported correctly by GSPlayer.

Does Slimserver maybe check the preferences on a timed basis as opposed
to startup maybe?

I know that I was meticulous in checking the PDA and the Slimserver
components specifically so I didn't have to write one of these
embarrassing "it's working now" posts...

But - it's working now. Not showing 128Kb/s.

I should have checked activity monitor previously to see the bitrate.

Oh well.

Thanks again guys.

does it report this even while you're actually streaming music? While I
don't know the details of how it works the silence that is "broadcast" while
no music is playing is 320K. When the music starts it should then report
the correct bitrate. If not, then it's likely that windows media player on
the pda isn't refreshing the bitrate it's showing on its interface despite
receiving the correct (128) bitrate.

Have you tried this with a computer? That would verify whether or not
slimserver is potentially at fault.

Sounds nice if it fits your needs, but me being a FLAC-only snob I am
mainly interested in a FLAC solution. As far as I see MP3 files may as
well be amplified themselves (as in the MP3Gain utility), whereas FLAC
needs a lossless approach.

ok - last question.

I modified the bitrate settings to limit to 128Kb/s. However the PPC
(GSplayer) still reports a 320Kb/s stream. I've reset the PPC and
stopped and started the Slimstream server.

The source media is AAC 192Kb/s. So by my understanding, setting the
Maximum Bitrate for that player:
- if an MP3 is 128Kb/s or lower it is sent without re-encoding.
- if an MP3 file is >128Kb/s it is re-encoded to 128Kb/s and streamed.
- if a file comes from another format (AAC for example) it is sent at
128Kb/s.

Why does my stream still get reported as 320Kb/s?

display the date and the time with the player is turned off. I
know it can do this because it did up until last night. I've
been messing with some fonts and the status_header in the
Fishbone skin. Other than that, I've made no changes (haven't
installed a new server version in a week or two and it had been
showing the date and time under that version.) I've tried every
other skin and the option for date and time screensaver does not
appear in those either.

Right... I guess I should point out that I had a variety of goals by
posting this message: 1) raise awareness about this feature, 2) Compile
information on the feature that I had found in various other posts, 3)
Explain how existing solutions worked and 4) cheerlead for native
support of this feature.

Thanks for pointing out that this is already possible if you modify the
way slimserver transcodes flacs. How to do this is explained here:
http://lists.slimdevices.com/archives/discuss/2004-June/031443.html I
haven't had time to test my setup to see if this works but I assume it
does.

As Jim pointed out, I think this could be handled better on the
SlimServer side and native support for it would be absolutely great.

Shipments were backlogged due to orders. Slim Devices has posted here sayign
they expected to have those backlogs cleared up in the next couple weeks.
This would mean we are now nearing that time. However, shipment time to the
UK has to be factored in, and the MultiTask would have to deal with their
back orders in sequence. Usually they are very responsive, even in these
forums.
Hopefully Stuart can provide more updated information.

Multitask haven't been good at responding to my emails (I don't think
they've responded to any of them!). *However*, *when I've rung them
they have been excellent*. Multitask have a newsletter that they send
out whenever they have an update on the Squeezeboxes. Give them a ring
and get them to make sure that you are on the list. I suspect that part
of the reason behind the poor email response rate is because they assume
that people are on the list so already have the information they need.

I ordered my Platinum SB2 wireless at the end of March and am still
waiting. I've now switched to a Black model and apparently can be
hopeful of getting it in the first week of May, or next week if I'm
lucky. There have been bad supply problems with the Platinum cases
(don't know exactly what), so these have all been delayed
significantly.

The Squeezebox 2 has been designed with a flexible IO standard through the
geekport. This means it can be reconfigured via firmware. The first planned
feature is IR blasting, with others to follow. If you have been reading the
other topics in the forum or looking at the current list of bug reports on
bugs.slimdevices.com, then you can see that there is still a lot of effort
being put into working out various launch issues with sb2 and 6.x of the
server.

Unfortunately, this leaves little time to work on the frills. Slim Devices isn't
known for keeping information to themselves, so the reason you find only bit,
is that only bits and ideas exist at the moment.

[slim] AAC playback background noise. Slimserver6/FreeBSD

2005-04-24 Thread icestorm

All,

I've just received the squeezebox2. Great little device! I've bought a
sonic T-amp amplifier for it and it sounds great!

However...When I try to play AAC music from my FreeBSD server, (which
is most of my music collection), I can hear a sound like a constant
wind in the background, which becomes intolerable when I increase the
volume. Please note that I can hear the song fine! This problem does
not happen with mp3 encoded music or radio.

I am currently using SlimServer 6.0.1 and the following convert.conf
entry:

mov flc * *
[faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent
--compression-level
-0 --endian big --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100
-

It happens also in various other config such as faad+endianess swapper
tool found on the web in both wav and pcm format.

faad version 2.0_5,1 according to FreeBSD pkg_info tool.

Anybody with a similar experience?

[slim] upgrading from firmware revision 10

2005-04-24 Thread Vidur Apparao
The SB2 firmware image in the 6.0.2 nightly build has been bumped to
revision 11 and the image in the 6.1 nightly has been bumped to 12.
These revisions now include a fix for a problem connecting to certain
3Com access points.

If you are running firmware 10, which has been included in the 6.1
nightlies for the last week or so, you may run into a problem upgrading
to either of the new firmware revisions. The firmware upgrade progress
bar will get to 100%, but the machine will not reboot. You will have to
press and hold the Power button for the firmware revision to take.

Again, this is ONLY if you are running the 6.1 (unstable) development
nightly builds. If you are running 6.0.1 or the 6.0.2 nightly build, the
upgrade process should be smooth.

[slim] Re: Dying for Replaygain (aka Volume Normalization)

2005-04-24 Thread Jim

I have to agree that the SlimServer support of ReplayGain is a bit
err...crappy.

I mean, yes I have modded config files before and got it working, but
the idea of ReplayGain is that it is switchable.

e.g. I want to have a party or listen to random music I'd put my Slim
in ReplayGain Radio mode. I want to really listen to a album I turn
off all ReplayGain etc

Having to mod/copy config files every time and reboot the server is
quite frankly a pain in the behind so I gave up with it.

Now I don't know Perl but surely something like this could be
implemented:

In the config file couldn't the following sort of change be made:

[flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed
--skip=$START$ --until=$END$ $REPLAYGAINPARAM$ -- $FILE$

Then the $REPLAYGAINPARAM$ variable is populated with either:

"" (null) - Default, no replaygain.
"--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=a" - Album mode
"--apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=t" - Radio mode

The $REPLAYGAINPARAM$ variable gets populated with one of these 3
strings by a switch on the web interface and ideally from the box via
the remote.

A bit of a hack I know, but a better solution than the current one
methinks.

[slim] Date and Time Screensaver Gone

2005-04-24 Thread Todd Fields
I'm running a Squeezebox1 on a Windows XP system. I'm using a
recent 6.01 nightly (from a week ago or so.) Everything has
been functioning normal using this nightly up until last night.
Last night I noticed when I turn my player off it displayed
something to the affect that my screensaver needed a
Squeezebox2. I went into SlimServer's Player Screensaver
settings and noticed the Power Off Screensaver was set to some
kind of meter. Normally I have it set to display the date and
time and it had been set that way until last night. I went to
change it back and noticed there is no option for date and time.
There are a couple of Now Playing selections as well as a few
meters but no option to display the date and time. I'm just
going from memory but I believe that used to be an option and I
know that's what it had been displaying up until last night. Is
this setting somewhere else?

2005-04-24 Thread psm0110

No, what I was crossing my fingers for was that the 5.1 wma file would
play to my surround receiver via the digital out (in surround sound).
I don't have a 5.1 system for my computer (I don't game).

I was using the sample MS surround files
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/domorewith/sursoshowcase.aspx

The real reason I wanted to try it out was the Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy radio series is being streamed in 5.1 surround by the BBC.
Apparently the wma version is true 5.1 Dolby Digital while the
realaudio version is prologic. I'd be happy with either I suppose.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/

FWIW, VLC cannot play them -- crashes saying format "wma3" is
unsupported.

Re: [slim] Dying for Replaygain (aka Volume Normalization)

2005-04-24 Thread Jeff Coffler
From: "street_samurai" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I just wanted to write a brief post to say how much I'm missing
Replaygain support in Slimserver. I've seen the bug reports/enhancement
requestes and I've voted on them... I'm not sure what priority this
feature has right now... but I write this to help bolster support for
including this feature soon.
I opened bug report 1311. I fully understand what replay gain is.
I just wanted to point out that replay gain support *IS* available today
with the SlimServer, and I'm using it today.

Bug 1311 calls for the FLAC decoder in the Squeezebox2 to natively interpret
replay gain tags. Without this, even though the SB2 understands FLAC files,
you must transcode to the SB2 if you want/need replay gain. The reason: The
FLAC decoder on my O/S understands replay gain, but the hardware decoder in
the SB2 does not. So, in the end, I still have replay gain. I just can't
use the native FLAC decoder on the SB2 - I must transcode.

For MP3GAIN (at least the old MP3GAIN I used to use when I still used MP3):
This actually modifies the sound volume in the MP3 source file. It looks
like it now adds some tags to more easily undo what it has done. But if
this is the same program: If you run MP3GAIN over your MP3 files, since the
volume in the MP3 file has changed, the Slimserver will behave the way you
want.

End result: You can get replay gain support in FLAC today and MP3. For MP3,
just run MP3GAIN, set it up for either album or song mode normalization, and
you're set. For FLAC, customize the conversion file to include
the --apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=a qualifier, and you're set.

Hope this clarifies,

The remote uses the NEC format, timing, carrier etc.
As mentioned by Marc, the codes can be found in

SB1/SBG have an internal geekport.

SB2 will use the headphone jack as a geekport in

I love my Squeezebox/Slimserver combo. I can't get enough and my

What is ReplayGain? It makes your music come out of your stereo at

your music (see http://www.replaygain.org/ for more info). To add

OK, scrub that. After a bit more searching, I deduced that the geekport
in an internal edge connector (IDC, perhaps?). Upon opening up the SB2,
there is clearly no such connector, so it looks like the geekport is no
longer an option. (My SB2 is a wired-only model, if that's relevant).

That brings me back to the post referred to by Tom. It seems to imply
that there is something in the offing that might send control signals
out on the headphone socket, but that things are at an early stage.
It's very difficult to find out any more information: searching the

what's planned?
