[slim] why won't aac files stream across internet

2005-10-01 Thread mr_magicfingers

Hi all,

just installed slimserver and got it running. I can access it via the
web interface using dyndns as I want to be able to do this remotely.

I can play any mp3 file with no problem, but the files that are encoded
aac just won't play, it simply stops and the player says 'stopped'.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

J.

[slim] Corrupt library - how to delete it and rebuild from scratch?

2005-10-01 Thread Dan Goodinson
The other day I posted about some phantom tags: tags which had been corrected
but the old data stillhung around somewhere.

The suggestion was to check through playlists. I did that - in fact I pretty
much deletd all my playlists, but the problem is still here. Today I also
notice that a few of the genre tags that I had previously changed (and so
should no longer exist) are still being displayed.

Wipe cache doesn't fix it ;-)

So how do I ditch the library and start again? I guess I should think about
upgrading to SS 6.2 while I'm at it, so if that makes things easier to delete
the library then any info appreciated.

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] Original Slimp3 help

2005-10-01 Thread jbuccino

When I purchased my new SB2 I gave my old Slimp3 to a friend who lives
about 50 miles away and set it up to access the same music on my
server. When it works, it is amazing. However it will occasionally skip
and squawk as if the server can't keep up. I'm pretty sure it isn't my
server or his network because when I bring my laptop to his house and
run SoftSqueeze everything works fine and there is no skipping. I have
already set the Bitrate Limiting and LAME quality for this player to
the lowest settings. This helps but doesn't totally fix the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas what else I could try?

Thanks.

If you want to stay with the current version:

Stop slimserver
Find slimserver.db and delete it
restart slimserver - it will then automatically do a full rescan of
your files.

The current 6.2 nightlies work fine for me so if you want to upgrade I
would:

Do a complete unistall of slimserver
Delete any remaining slimserver directories/files
Install 6.2 - again it will then automatically do a full rescan of your

What OS is SlimServer running on? If it's Linux or Unix these might not
work--both have to be transcoded in 6.1.1 with that player firmware, and
you probably don't have the executables you need (you may be able to get

[slim] Genre Questions

2005-10-01 Thread max . spicer

I've taken Malcolm's questions from the Developer forum and answered
them here to try and keep things a bit more on topic over there. Hope
noone minds, least of all Malcolm!

1) You can have whatever genres you like. Just tag your music with
whatever genres you want and SlimServer/RandomPlay will use them.

2) Yes. You can add multiple genre tags to tracks or you can use a
separator character and tell SlimServer about it. The first option is
preferred, but I personally still use the latter. For example, some of
my tracks have a genre of Electronica;Dance. I tell SlimServer to use
the semicolon as a separator character (Server Settings - Behaviour -
Multiple items in tags) and those tracks show up under both Electronica
and Dance.

Max
mwphoto Wrote:

 1) Can genres be user configurable? My classification doesn't really
 match
any worldview of genres so I'd be (ab)using the genre tag to make it

 2) Can a track be in more than one genre? How?

2005-10-01 Thread radish

The server will have to transcode aac files to stream them. It will need
quicktime to do that. If you're streaming to a non-slimdevices player
(like winamp) it can only stream as MP3, so you'll need LAME installed
as well. If you're using a squeezebox or softsqueeze at the other end
you can stream as FLAC, PCM or MP3.

RE: [slim] Re: Corrupt library - how to delete it andrebuildfromscratch?

2005-10-01 Thread Dan Goodinson
Many thanks!

Although now I'm even more confused :-/

I stopped SS, renamed the .db file to a .db.old file. Then restarted SS and
MusicMagicMixer.

On restart, SS didn't automatically rescan. So I did used the Wipe Cache
option.
After SS had completed scanning the library, the phantom track is STILL there!!
So this time I stopped SS, renamed the .db file to .db.old (the original one
now is called .db.older) and restarted SS.
Additionally, I went the location that SS thinks the file is at - and I
physically moved the file. It's on the desktop - SS can't see it anymore.
Restarted SS and MMM. Still no automatic scan on restart.
And even though the file no longer exists, SS still references it!!

So it can't be a dodgy tag on the file itself, because as far as SS is
concerned the file is no longer even there?! So it must be storing the
information somewhere else. I'm still also seeing the phantom genres that no
longer exist.

Are there any other locations that SS uses to cache data??

Here's a faster way to ensure that you get a total clean, rescan and

1) Stop slimserver.
2) Delete the entire server\Cache directory
3) Start slimserver

A rescan and complete rebuild of the db and Cache directory will occur.

I wouldn't have thought so. If it is pulling the music over the internet
then you are introducing many more variables than you would have if you were
on a network. Ignoring upload and download bandwidth on the connections you
also have contention ratios (at least you do in the UK with ADSL) you have
the packets routing between service providers, or at the very least through
a providers network. Also bear in mind that the display for the unit is
being driven by the server as well, so not only is the music taking
bandwidth, the player/server communications are as well. I have no idea what
the overhead for this is, but I would assume it would be significant on
anything lower than basic Ethernet speeds.

As a last resort, you might want to go into network settings and
set 'maximum number of bytes to send...' to something lower than
the default - like 1000. If that works you can experiment with
higher values between 1000 and 1400 (you want the highest value
your connection can tolerate).

This may work if the MTU between the SLIMP3 and your server is
less than 1400.

[slim] more wood cases

2005-10-01 Thread chrisla

So with the wood case other posts earlier in the week, I thought I would
post some pics of my dedicated touchscreen softsqueeze boxes in
Brazilian Mahogany cases. I had been holding off to take better pics,
but when does one ever have time for that?

Basic rundown:

- Custom Mahogany cases done by David Mosby of Freightline Cases
(contact info available upon request) David did a GREAT job, was very
excited about my project, and in the end I paid him more than I owed
him b/c I was so satisfied.

- TC-10 Touchpanel computer from earthlcd.com Very happy with this
aside from the sound chip quality. It does not have line out, so I am
using speaker to line level converters from a car audio store. Even
this setup is pretty noisy at low volume.

- I have added a soundcard w/ digitial out on one box that is hooked to
my good stereo setup. Sounds MUCH better than the stock. At some point I
will get that working with an ART DI/O that I bought.

- Boots from CF, and runs damnsmall linux. It took a couple of months
for me to get it all working. I needed to compile a custom kernel for
the touchscreen, and use a Kdive X binary from the driver author.

- Boots, runs a modified slimp3slave, starts X, ssh's to my Linux
server and runs softsqueeze with X displayback. This setup was required
as the Geode CPU could not quite keep up with Softsqueeze and 320Mp3
playback. The combo works great. Slimp3slave was modified to allow uniq
MAC addresses, so I can have four of these boxes on my network.

- Running a custom woodgrain touchscreen skin that I did, that has been
included with later betas of Softsqueeze.

Overall it was a fun project, and it is nice to have music all over the
house now. Some pics are attached.
