[slim] DHCP oddities...

2006-01-28 Thread Malor

Not sure if this is the right forum or not apologies if this is the
wrong place.

I'm seeing a slightly odd behavior with the Squeezebox via DHCP. I'm
not sure if it's the Squeezebox itself causing the problem, or if it's
my WRT54GS (Linux flavor, running 4.70.6 firmware, the latest Linksys
version.)

Basically, I'm trying to set the Squeezeboxes at fixed addresses. But
the MAC address that the DHCP server sees is not the correct one. Both
Squeezeboxes are requesting a DHCP address with 20:05:73:00:00:0c. But
after they get their address, they show via normal ARP resolution at
their regular, correct MAC addresses.

I think this actually may be some weirdness in the WRT54GS, I've seen
DHCP be strange through Linksys stuff before. I just want to verify
that nobody knows of any bugs in the Squeezebox firmware that would
cause this problem?

[slim] Re: Multiple song entries in SlimServer...

2006-01-28 Thread ajmitchell

I was having the same/similar problem in which tracks would appear as a
duplicate in the right hand playlist column - almost like a ghost
image; although only one track would play (ie it looked wrong on the
web interface but played correctly). Is this the same for you?

Problem is after several re-scans the behaviour just stopped, I didn't
fix it!

[slim] Re: Linkstation Slimserver module problem

2006-01-28 Thread thorby

Thanks for the offers of help. I Though I had better come back and let
people know I resolved it and I will explain how. Firstly appologies
for the delay but with a 8 week old baby you kinda forget things.

If you own a MIPSEL processor Linkstation (Firmware above v2.0 I
believe) and have the same problems installing slimserver to resolve
the issue I needed to do the following,

Went thorugh Marc Field's guide
(http://www.fieldnetworks.com/slim/linkstation.html) when you have
unpacked slimserver and try to run it you will get module failure
errors.

1.Goto the linkstation wiki site find the mipsel slimserver modules.
These are the missing modules for the MIPSEL processor:

2. Download and install them onto the linstation on one of the visible
shares

3. Download another telnet application other than the windows one
(Apparently the windows telnet performs double clicks), I used
PenguiNet.

4. Telnet onto the linkstation using the new telnet app

5. Move the files to the root of the linkstation from the share (mv
command)

6. Unpack the files (tar xzvf file command)

7. Run the install (./install.sh). The installation should prompt you
to run and then to remove the installation files (if you only get a
single prompt and the install doesn't work, your telnet app is doing
the double return thingy)

and you should be able to go back and run slimserver now.

Since I am a unix novice I though this would help others.

[slim] Re: Uh Oh, A problem

2006-01-28 Thread Michaelwagner

The fact that it doesn't add *an* extra copy of everything but goes up
geometrically (2,4,8) implies that it is reading it's own information
again and doubling all of it each time.

So tell us what you do when you uninstall SS.

And after you've uninstalled, what is left?

It sounds like *something* is overliving the uninstall and creating a
memory of all the other scans. Either the database itself (but that
would more likely create the sequence 1,2,3,4) or a playlist that
contains the entire database of music.

Are you using iTunes?

[slim] Re: Uh Oh, A problem

2006-01-28 Thread WrightDawg

Nope not using ITunes. This is totally out of left field as this just
happened last night. Before then, everything was working as it should.

Again, it's not doubling the albums per se, what it's doing is listing
the same album multiple times, but with only a few (1, 2, 3 etc) songs
in each album. So for Dark Side of The Moon for instance, it may list
the same album 3 times, but one of them will have Money in it, one
will have Time etc. All of the songs will be listed in the various
album listings.

I downloaded a trial version of Tag and Rename and checked the tags,
and all are correct.

I ripped all of the files into FLAC using DB Power Amp and all CD's
were ripped at the same time and have worked properly... until last
night.

I also did a virus scan on my external drive that holds all my music
and nothing came up.

One more thing, I'm also running a SB1 in my bedroom (the one in the
living room is a SB3) and the SB1 has the same issue. I have no clue
what the problem is but I figured it was a Slim Server issue since it
all went haywire after a Clear and Rescan function.

I appreciate all your help.

What format did you record in? WAV?

WAV is the highest bitrate of all formats. If it
plays then stutters, this may be more of a
bandwidth/buffer filling issue than anything.

Try compressing to FLAC using the command-line or

I'm not sure it will be slower than SB1. If you press the key mid

Does the 770 browser work as-is with most 'standard' websites (ie,

only 'work' with pda-friendly sites). If it does, that plus the
'better remote for sqb3' would be worth the price of admission.

Now, if you could only stick a 'knob' on it...

[slim] Re: How I got SlimServer v6.2.1 working with MySQL

2006-01-28 Thread cliveb

Having followed this thread, I thought I would try to get MySQL working
on my FreeBSD box. As far as I can tell, everything is OK with the
MySQL database, and the creation of the Slimserver schema worked.

But when I try to switch Slimserver over to the MySQL database, it dies
on startup. Are there any debugging flags I can set which will generate
a log of what it's doing when trying to connect to the database?

And can anyone tell me precisely which user Slimserver runs as? There's
a user named slimserv which has been created, and most of the config
files belong to that user. But when I take a look at the processes
running, slimserver appears to be running as root. And yet when I
inadvertantly changed the owner of slimserver.conf to root, there was a
message that it couldn't be written to on Slimserver startup, which
suggests to me that it does not run as root. Does it start up running
as slimserv, then replace itself with another program that has a root
suid attribute?

[slim] Yes, SB2 as alarm clock

2006-01-28 Thread Mark Lanctot
I have an SB2 and an SB3. The SB3 I'm using as my
primary player, the SB2 I had reserved as a player
to use around a future model railroad in the
basement. It's not because I wanted to hide the
SB2, it's that I found it has a greater wireless
signal/range and would work better at a greater
distance through one more floor.

But I haven't put anything in the basement yet and
likely won't for a year or two, so it was in its
box gathering dust.

I just decided I should use it temporarily as an
alarm clock in the bedroom. I had some old
midrange computer speakers I wasn't using, Altec
Lansing ATP3. They're good as computer speakers
but not good speakers in general. I hooked them
up using the analogue outputs with an RCA to
stereo submini adapter cable I had.

It'll mostly be connected to SqueezeNetwork and
used as an alarm clock. I don't have my
SlimServer on 24/7, although I might change this
as the SlimServer alarm functions are much better,
allowing me to turn off the alarm on weekends and
allowing different playlists on each day.

It sounds quite decent with those speakers. Not
an audiophile experience, but those speakers never
sounded so good.

And the gradual volume ramping function should be
nice. I can't stand OTA radio, so I had my old
clock radio set to the buzzer on a very high
volume (I sleep with earplugs). So it may just
prevent a heart attack one of these days!

So despite all the jibes this thing received over
the years, it really *does* make a great clock
radio! :-D

You won't have any 'is this PDA friendly' worries with the 770. The
browser rocks. If you have reservations, I'd check with your area
CompUSA and/or Frey's and see if they have a demo unit out.

Don't get me started with 'the knob'... Chris, took me a while to

Unfortunately clearing the server cache did not help (I tried it twice

So perhaps downloading 6.5 is the way to go?

In addition, just to make triple sure it wasn't the tags I opened up

this is somehow (no idea) a SS issue.

I appreciate all your suggestions so far, if anyone else has any ideas

With the help of the Slim Devices support people I was able to confirm
that Slimserver 6.2 is not compatible with OS X 10.2.8, so I installed
Slimserver 6.1.1. Rebooting the machine was necessary before the
browser connection could be made, but now the server is running
smoothly. I am able to stream nicely to the current version of
Softsqueeze, 2.3, though it probably expects to be talking to
Slimserver 6.2.

I'm a bit concerned whether a new Squeezebox will be compatible with
this older version of Slimserver, though.

[slim] SqueezeNetwork ambient sounds in SlimServer?

2006-01-28 Thread Mark Lanctot
OK, this is a bit of a silly request, but I'm
using an SB2 as an alarm clock, see

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20518

The SlimServer alarm function is much more
powerful and flexible than the SqueezeNetwork
alarm function, allowing a different alarm time
each day, disabling of alarms on certain days, and
a different alarm playlist each day.

There is, however, one thing SqueezeNetwork has
that SlimServer doesn't: the ambient sounds.

I really would like to use them. They have a nice
predictable loudness and I could choose a
different one each day which I could get used to
after a while - so I'd know immediately when it's
Friday. :-)

Is there any way to get these sounds into
SlimServer? The only thing I can think of is,
does anyone have the exact URLs for them? You
could put them in individual playlists then.

It would be really nice if there would be a
downloadable package with the actual files in
them, but I'll take what I can get.

I know this is a trivial question, but I figured I
might as well ask. I could put it as an
enhancement request if the community feels this
might be of some benefit.

Thanks.

There is an open request to add the missing features to the SQN alarm.
Natural sounds might be locked into SQN by licensing, so hard to guess
what could be done in that direction.

[slim] Re: DHCP oddities...

2006-01-28 Thread Malor

Yes, I'm bridging with both units. I just turned it on with the second
one, and noticed this issue while troubleshooting it getting the wrong
IP address. The possibility that it might be the bridging just hit me
about ten minutes ago... in fact, it was that thought that prompted me
to log in and read replies. :)

This isn't a show-stopper for me, but if it's fixable, I'd love to see
it repaired. I prefer using DHCP reservations for fixed-address
machines, so I can make network changes easily, or move computers to a
new network without much effort.

Other than turning off bridging or going to static addressing, are
there any other workarounds I could try? This isn't a critical
problem, and I can wait for a fix if it'll be awhile before one shows.

I'd be happy to help test a beta firmware, too.

How about running a DHCP server that you can configure to
assign fixed IP addresses based on the MAC?
That is what I do for all of the machines in my house,
I use DHCP, set them to the same values, and have
that in my DNS. The DHCP makes adding new boxes
easy, and allows folks to bring laptops in
for work and access.

[slim] Re: DHCP oddities...

2006-01-28 Thread MrC

It was pretty clear to me from your MAC address that you had bridging
enabled, and were encountering the bug I submitted and researched.

There is new firmware (v29) just updated today. Perhaps you can
download tonight's 6.2.2 or 6.5 build and test it out to see if its
fixed. I've already updated my firmware, but haven't tested it for
that particular fix yet.

I don't know of any workarounds, as the 20:... MAC address changes, so
you can't rely on it either.

If you're just ripping using Itunes and nothing else - that should be
fine.

However, if the folder you are pointing Slimserver at the same as your
ITunes Music Library, that may be a reason for the duplicate entries,
depending on how you are pointing slimserver at it.

I don't use Itunes (so someone else who does may be able to confirm
better than me) but if you want to use the Itunes Library you should
select the Use Itunes option on the web interface (think in 6.2.1 it
is on the Server Settings page) and leave the Music Library box (on the
same page) empty (fill in the equivilent box on the Itunes section in
Server Settings).

I'm afraid I can't comment on where the cache is on a RH install.
You're looking for a file called slimserversql.db - on my PPC install I
keep it in a seperate folder to the main install.

I've seen this and in my case it was caused by bad cue files in the
album folder.

I now run the following script on my entire music library to hide all
cue files:

find /path/to/library \
\( -iname *.cue -o -iname *.m3u \) \
-exec chmod 000 \{\} \;

[slim] SB3 does not function

2006-01-28 Thread slimdemage

I am trying to use my new Squeezebox3, but it just crashes constantly.
The display freezes, the remote fails to control the player, and it
cannot play even one song without freezing or shutting down. Wireless
strength remains at around 90% or slightly higher. I've tried various
beta versions of the server software and firmware updates, now back to
square 1. I carefully rebuild the database after changing versions. The
nightly build did not seem to help. I have a Linksys WAP54G (v1.1) with
the latest firmware. I've tried disabling Windows Firewall, MAC
filtering, wireless security. I went and bought another wireless
router, but after it failed I returned it. I would be willing to try
anything because I want this product to work. Any help would be great.

[slim] Re: SB3 does not function

2006-01-28 Thread snarlydwarf

Is this after the database has completed building? It's a pretty I/O
intensive task and the server can be slow doing it depending on your
hardware.

Since the SB doesn't really respond to remote requests by itself (it
passes the button back to the server, then acts), it may just be a very
slow database scan. (We'll have to figure out why yours is that
demanding on your system if that's the problem, but if it's midscan,
that may very well be it.)

What sort of server is it?

And while you're at it, for grins, try to plug it into an ethernet port
for a bit and see if it's more responsive. It could be wireless
interference as well, and may as well check a couple things at once.
:)

If it's responsive on ethernet, but not wired, try changing the channel
on your router which may move it out of the interference.

I am using 2.6.9 from knoppix on damnsmall Linux 0.91 (quite old at
this point) the touchscreen is a DMC-TSC10 based board. The
touchscreen driver is not part of any standard tree, I just
found/cut/pasted it from a forum entry that now seems to be gone. I'm
not sure if I still have the source. It also needed a mod'd version of
Xvesa, that even the author did not have the source for any longer.

The sound card will work with the kahlua driver. However sound quality
is utter crap, as they do not bring a line out, only speaker out, it's
very noisy with lots of interference from the Ethernet chips.

Get yourself an AudioTrak Maya 5.1 MKII, I've bought them from
egghead and Florida music co. Those are ice1724 or ice1712 based,
though I have never succeeded in making the digital outs work under
Linux, let me know if you do.

If you have 512M of ftp space, I will upload you a working CF image.
Else, I uploaded it to someone else who is using it, maybe he could
let you pull it down.

Stock knoppix or damnsmall will get everything except the touchscreen working.
