[slim] Playlist Edit button crashes server
Hello, I could not figure out why I could only add one radio station as a playlist, so I wanted to edit the playlist to see what slim was putting in there. I learned that whenever I hit the edit button in the Browse Playlist page, Slimserver immediately crashes. This happens with playlists created by Slimserver such as after radio tune in, and also with playlists created by MusicMatch that are part of my music library. I will try using the favorites method to access typed in radio stations so the edit playlist function is not that important to me, but thought I'd pass along the bug, if it is a bug. Slimserver is on DellP4, 512RAM, wired ethernet 10Mbit, running nightly SlimServer-v2006-01-28, with no other problems. -- richidoo richidoo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3097 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21613 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Re: Squeezebox3 - Complete FREAKOUT & stereo damage warning
Had another Squeezebox3 freak out this morning. The power to my house was interrupted for a few seconds and the sb3 lost power. When it came back up, it was sending a buzzing signal to the right channel of my amp at a moderate volume. There was no slimserver running at the time. After I restarted the slimserver, I turned the sb3 volume all the way down and unpaused.. I was greeted by the wonderful sound of full blast music despite the null volume. Good morning indeed. I re-programmed the xilinix chip and it seems fine now. It would be nice if the hardware/firmware had better corruption checking and if the outputs were muted by default.. The temporary buzzing is obviously less of a concern than the full output blasts. Any progress on understanding/detecting xilinix corruption or mitigating through firmware changes? What's wrong with it is sometimes a classical piece is more like a song than an album. I would sometimes like to hear a random playlist like 1. Beatles, Can't Buy Me Love 2. Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (all three movements) 3. Panacea, Sandansko Horo (Check it out! magnatune.com) 4. Schubert, Du Bist die Ruh' I don't necessarily want a whole Beatles album or a whole lieder recital (or even, perhaps, a whole song-cycle), which is what I get when I shuffle By Album. I certainly don't want just the second movement (if the CD happened to call it a "movement") of the Brandenburg, which is what I get when I shuffle By Song! I have my music over 3 drives. The first 2 are full, so I'm adding to the third. When that's full, I'll add another, and so on. Fragmentation is not an issue in this situation. To be honest, even if I were adding and removing all the time I'd still not consider fragmentation an issue due to the size of these files (large) and the performance requirements of the application (low). -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21598 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Using externally generated playlists
Hi all, I run slimserver on a linkstation (linux version) and I cannot use the MusicMagicMixer directly since it only runs on x86 linux platforms... I've found a way to run the MMM on my WinXP PC and then to generate a playlist which gets copied and converted (changing '\' to '/' and such) by a perl script running on my linkstation. This should all work beautifully but one difficulty I'm having right now is simply reading in this newly named playlist into slimserver... If I just copy this new playlist in slimserver's assigned playlist folder, it doesn't get found automatically. I looked in the .conf file for a possible repository of created playlists to amend but I didn't find any. One solution is to create a dummy playlist in slimserver (such as mmm.m3u) and then overwrite that one playlist from my little perl script but this is a bit "limited" in the sense that I can only have one MMM generated playlist at a time. How could I get slimserver to automatically see any new externally generated playlist when doing a "browse playlists"? Wireless range depends on so many factors that it's hard to generalize, but I think the theoretical limit for 802.11g is around 100 meters, and in the real world it's likely to be a lot less than that. I think it only will refresh the playlists during rescan, so the easiest way is to perform a rescan with "rescan playlists only". It is possible to start a rescan using the CLI by connecting to port 9090 and enter the correct command. So this should also make it possible to perform the rescan automatically at the end of the script that generates the playlists. I used this row to perform a full rescan using the CLI on my ubuntu linux, so you should be able to do something similar in your script: echo -e "wipecache\nexit\n" | telnet localhost 9090 >/dev/null 2>&1 -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21627 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

What I suppose I meant is that I'm satisfied that, nearly all the time, I can lay my hands on the music I want. I quite agree that the scenario you've described is not well catered for... I suspect there probably is an answer lurking somewhere around the use of the PART and PARTNUMBER tags (in Vorbis at least): have the same TITLE for each movement of a Piece, and vary the PART (eg "Allegro") and PARTNUMBER (eg "3"). This would be better, though I think it would require quite a bit of reworking across slimserver and its plugins, which was one reason why it didn't make it into the set of Enhancements which started off this thread - I was trying to make them relatively easy to implement. You'd also risk confusing other players if they saw multiple identical TITLEs and didn't know to look in PART to work out what to do with them. Can you think of any other ways of achieving what you want? I fill it up, but before you get it to more than about 80% full, defrag it as many times as it takes to get to zero fragments. [slim] Re: Enhancement requests for Classical or complex music collections
Ceejay - I'm sure you're right. The information we want cannot quite be encoded as Title or as Album, because it doesn't match either for other kinds of music. So, it needs another tag, but that won't do any good until players recognize it. Technically, I think the best right-now solution might be to rip classical works as single tracks. I don't really understand why individual movements got to be "songs" in the first place. But nobody's going to want to do that. Even if someone wrote a script to assemble the pieces automatically, I'm sure it would make people uneasy. From comments about EAC, normalization, and even absolute phase, I have gathered that it's important to people to have exact copies of what's on their CDs, even when they believe what's on the CDs is not exactly what they want to hear. But, come to think of it, we wouldn't really have to mess with SlimServer proper that much. Rather, all I really want is a program to create a random playlist, respecting my notion of what a quantum of music is. That notion, as you suggest, could be encoded in an additional tag. "Genre" would almost work, but let's not start wrong by overloading that, either. -- tom permutt tom permutt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1893 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18946 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
