Just because I don't want one doesn't make me the enemy!

The reason I don't want a Slim Boombox is because I don't think it
would be done well enough for the audience it would be intended for. I
don't need it and I know the rest of my family won't like it because
they don't use my SB2 already because it's too Byzantine in its user
interface - as you say, it has to be learnt. They pick up and play
iTunes and iPods without missing a beat.

Slim is currently for enthusiasts like you and I who will invest some
time in the quirks and setup for the audio quality possible. Take away
the audio quality and it's just not worth it.

Still, that's just me. If everyone else wants one, then good luck to
you all!

Actually, the audio quality isn't what drew me in.
I wanted an ethernet based music player, because I wanted to make a
portable DJ system that didn't require me to carry 500 CDs around on my
back. I'm getting older and as my interests change and my back gets
weaker, more CDs on a weaker back wasn't working.

[slim] Playlist Edit button crashes server

2006-03-01 Thread richidoo

Hello,
I could not figure out why I could only add one radio station as a
playlist, so I wanted to edit the playlist to see what slim was putting
in there. I learned that whenever I hit the edit button in the Browse
Playlist page, Slimserver immediately crashes. This happens with
playlists created by Slimserver such as after radio tune in, and also
with playlists created by MusicMatch that are part of my music
library.

I will try using the favorites method to access typed in radio stations
so the edit playlist function is not that important to me, but thought
I'd pass along the bug, if it is a bug.

Slimserver is on DellP4, 512RAM, wired ethernet 10Mbit, running nightly
SlimServer-v2006-01-28, with no other problems.

Re: [slim] Re: Squeezebox3 - Complete FREAKOUT & stereo damage warning

2006-03-01 Thread Free Lunch
Had another Squeezebox3 freak out this morning.

The power to my house was interrupted for a few seconds and the sb3
lost power. When it came back up, it was sending a buzzing signal to
the right channel of my amp at a moderate volume. There was no
slimserver running at the time.

After I restarted the slimserver, I turned the sb3 volume all the way
down and unpaused.. I was greeted by the wonderful sound of full
blast music despite the null volume. Good morning indeed.

I re-programmed the xilinix chip and it seems fine now.

It would be nice if the hardware/firmware had better corruption
checking and if the outputs were muted by default.. The temporary
buzzing is obviously less of a concern than the full output blasts.

Any progress on understanding/detecting xilinix corruption or
mitigating through firmware changes?

My point is that considering your music drive read-only is tantamount
to saying that you aren't going to be adding any more music -- ever.
Unless you have a mechanism in place that adds your new music to a
second drive (that also contains all of you previous music), and then
overwrites your music drive in its entirety.

OK I must be an idiot, because nobody else seems to be having any

How do I create a favorite, and/or where in the documentation do I find

I press the remote's favorite button, display says "Empty" - duh
I hit Favorites in the web interface, it says "No Favorites Exist" -
duh

Other than these two references, I can't find Favorites mentioned
anywhere in the SQB universe.
Thanks for any help

It is a good idea given the limitations, and I do it, but I
don't think it "works pretty well." What's wrong with it is
sometimes a classical piece is more like a song than an album.

I would sometimes like to hear a random playlist like

1. Beatles, Can't Buy Me Love
2. Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (all three movements)
3. Panacea, Sandansko Horo (Check it out! magnatune.com)
4. Schubert, Du Bist die Ruh'

I don't necessarily want a whole Beatles album or a whole
lieder recital (or even, perhaps, a whole song-cycle), which is
what I get when I shuffle By Album. I certainly don't want
just the second movement (if the CD happened to call it a
"movement") of the Brandenburg, which is what I get when
I shuffle By Song! (It's written as two chords and usually
performed these days as a candenza and two chords.)

I have my music over 3 drives. The first 2 are full, so I'm adding to
the third. When that's full, I'll add another, and so on. Fragmentation
is not an issue in this situation.

To be honest, even if I were adding and removing all the time I'd still
not consider fragmentation an issue due to the size of these files
(large) and the performance requirements of the application (low).

My 770 arrived today !!!, I'll set it up this evening. I currently run
6.2.2 (on Win XP) which is pretty stable and behaves well for me. I
understand I need to run 6.5 to use the Nokia skin.

Does anyone have any advice on which particular build or version I
should use? or any to avoid?

I've read a bit about MySQL being in 6.5, is this an option?

If 6.5 is not completley stable, is there a way of keeping both 6.2.2
installed (as a service, maybe), and running 6.5 as well (manually)?

Thanks

I use MySQL with 6.5 and it works great, including some noticeable
performance improvement on search and browse. There is a wiki page on
this at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MySQL

I recommend backing up your 6.2 directory and install 6.5. Give it a
shot and if you aren't happy with it, go back to 6.2. I did a little
bouncing back and forth before I started developing in 6.5 (which
pretty much sealed the deal for me). The one gotcha I found was that
the db cache file created by 6.2 would cause 6.5 to barf and vice
versa.

Have a good time with the 770. Its arrival is well timed...I'll be
posting about the sweet Nokia770 skin improvements later today.

Nigel,

Have a look at my previous post:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=84774#post84774

I'm running both 6.5 and 6.2.1 and can quickly flip between the two.
You need to make sure you're running the same firmware on both
otherwise you'll have to update your squeezeboxes every time you switch
SlimServer versions.

"Get the picture?" came across as a bit aggressive to my obviously over
sensitive read of your message. The joys of typed conversations eh? No
matter, it wasn't intended to offend so the fault is with me.

Back to the boomboxes though, I guess I'm in the minority here. I
certainly don't want the Apple boombox, especially at that price. I did
like the Sony Network player, but that would mean a re-export of all my
music to MP3 and a confusing doubling up of libraries. The Roku has
802.11b and doesn't work with the latest SlimServer, so no thanks.

Unless the Slim one had DAB radio, a CD player and network music, then
it means I need more than one box in the kitchen where this sort of
thing would live. So it just doesn't make sense in my household. I
suppose I won't buy it if it comes out, that's all.

[slim] Using externally generated playlists

2006-03-01 Thread dborn

Hi all,

I run slimserver on a linkstation (linux version) and I cannot use the
MusicMagicMixer directly since it only runs on x86 linux platforms...

I've found a way to run the MMM on my WinXP PC and then to generate a
playlist which gets copied and converted (changing '\' to '/' and such)
by a perl script running on my linkstation. This should all work
beautifully but one difficulty I'm having right now is simply reading
in this newly named playlist into slimserver... If I just copy this new
playlist in slimserver's assigned playlist folder, it doesn't get found
automatically. I looked in the .conf file for a possible repository of
created playlists to amend but I didn't find any.

One solution is to create a dummy playlist in slimserver (such as
mmm.m3u) and then overwrite that one playlist from my little perl
script but this is a bit "limited" in the sense that I can only have
one MMM generated playlist at a time.

How could I get slimserver to automatically see any new externally
generated playlist when doing a "browse playlists"?

Thanks,
Daniel

Wireless range depends on so many factors that it's hard to generalize,
but I think the theoretical limit for 802.11g is around 100 meters, and
in the real world it's likely to be a lot less than that. Also, what
were you planning to use to power the Squeezebox?

[slim] Re: Using externally generated playlists

2006-03-01 Thread erland

I think it only will refresh the playlists during rescan, so the easiest
way is to perform a rescan with "rescan playlists only".

It is possible to start a rescan using the CLI by connecting to port
9090 and enter the correct command. So this should also make it
possible to perform the rescan automatically at the end of the script
that generates the playlists.

I used this row to perform a full rescan using the CLI on my ubuntu
linux, so you should be able to do something similar in your script:
echo -e "wipecache\nexit\n" | telnet localhost 9090 >/dev/null 2>&1

Tom,

of course you're right, this is a long way from perfect, I guess it
depends on how much you think "pretty" weakens "well" !! What I
suppose I meant is that I'm satisfied that, nearly all the time, I can
lay my hands on the music I want.

I quite agree that the scenario you've described is not well catered
for... I suspect there probably is an answer lurking somewhere around
the use of the PART and PARTNUMBER tags (in Vorbis at least): have the
same TITLE for each movement of a Piece, and vary the PART (eg
"Allegro") and PARTNUMBER (eg "3").

This would be better, though I think it would require quite a bit of
reworking across slimserver and its plugins, which was one reason why
it didn't make it into the set of Enhancements which started off this
thread - I was trying to make them relatively easy to implement.

You'd also risk confusing other players if they saw multiple identical
TITLEs and didn't know to look in PART to work out what to do with
them.

Can you think of any other ways of achieving what you want?

Regards
Ceejay

I don't know if anyone's hacked a third-party antenna onto a

I just don't think the PDA/Telcanto thing is very a compelling
solution. The Nokia 770 has a real browser, which is a FAR improved
user experience to a classic PDA. It also allowed me to just write a
custom skin to slimserver, a far easier prospect than reinventing the
wheel with YASC (yet another slimserver controller).

I fill it up, but before you get it to more than about 80% full, defrag
it as many times as it takes to get to zero fragments. Then as you add
the remaining files, defrag often to keep fragmentation to zero. Once
the drive is full, it essentially becomes a read-only drive and you
don't have to do any more defragmentation.

Toot! Toot!
(that's the sound of me tooting my own horn)

I checked in major changes to Nokia770 yesterday, and I recommend you
give it a shot right away. The changes are all in the 'now playing'
page, which now uses AJAX. Why should you care?

elements on the page are dynamically updated without ever requiring a
full page refresh
clicking on control buttons (play/pause/stop/prev/next, volume,
shuffle, and repeat controls) result in immediate gratification without
removing the control from the user

If you are interested, I went into insane detail on the technical nitty
gritty on a developers forum thread here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21637

Fun tip: change the resolution of a PC laptop to 800x600, point Opera
or Firefox 1.5 to your slimserver in fullscreen mode (hit F-11). It's
DA BOMB.

enjoy, and I'll look forward to hearing what you have to say about the
changes. I'm willing to conceed that bugs are possible, and I'd like to
hear about those as well.

This was a known problem, and should be fixed with current builds. I
have not been able reprduce this with the current build of 6.2.2.

[slim] Re: Enhancement requests for Classical or complex music collections

2006-03-01 Thread tom permutt

Ceejay - I'm sure you're right. The information we want cannot quite be
encoded as Title or as Album, because it doesn't match either for other
kinds of music. So, it needs another tag, but that won't do any good
until players recognize it.

Technically, I think the best right-now solution might be to rip
classical works as single tracks. I don't really understand why
individual movements got to be "songs" in the first place. But
nobody's going to want to do that. Even if someone wrote a script to
assemble the pieces automatically, I'm sure it would make people
uneasy. From comments about EAC, normalization, and even absolute
phase, I have gathered that it's important to people to have exact
copies of what's on their CDs, even when they believe what's on the CDs
is not exactly what they want to hear.

But, come to think of it, we wouldn't really have to mess with
SlimServer proper that much. Rather, all I really want is a program to
create a random playlist, respecting my notion of what a quantum of
music is. That notion, as you suggest, could be encoded in an
additional tag. "Genre" would almost work, but let's not start wrong
by overloading that, either.

Are the changes you just tooted about (heh) available in the latest 6.5
download? I am s close to getting a 770 just because of your skin!
At any rate, I use it with Firefox right now and love it.

[slim] Re: Random Play is SO Non-Random!

2006-03-01 Thread Ben

Err, what's non random about repeating? Every song has just as much of a
chance as being next as any other, including the one that just played.

What you want is decidly non-random. You want it to pick any song but
make sure that a song from that artist and album hasn't played
recently.

Ben,

Great work, thanks! Just tried the new version and it's a lot more
responsive now! Now if only we could overclock the 770... ;)

I'll let you know if I come across any bugs...

[slim] Apple lossless on ubuntu linux server

2006-03-01 Thread jsissom

Hello, I have a sb2 and sb3. My server is ubuntu linux 5.1. I'm trying
to get apple lossless files to play.

I followed the directions in the FAQ (I think), but it won't play the
files.

I installed faad and flac on my box. I changed convert.conf like this:

Code:

  ## you can comment this out if you want to use LAME to transcode AAC/MOV
files to MP3.
  #mov aif * *
  # [mov123] $FILE$

  mov wav squeezebox *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$

  mov wav squeezebox2 *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$

Then I restarted the slim server.

Unfortunately, the apple lossless files still won't play. Is there
something I missed?

Thanks
Jay

really? I was just going to post to tell everyone that I forgot to
check in the new progress bar image file, which caused the whole page
to more-or-less break.

Well anyway, that file is checked in now and I think it should work
with either a freshly updated subversion checkout or with the _next_
nightly build.

sorry if any of you have been running into this issue, and thanks to
Richard of softsqueeze fame for pointing out the error.

cheers,
#!/ben

S... I take it the "toot" version *ISN'T* in the latest nightly
build? I'm running v 6423 right now.

Ben,

Looking forward to seeing the 'new and improved' skin. You've made us
Nokia770 users quite happy already. Keep up the good work.

Question - will we see dynamic updating of internet radio stream info.
as well, or is this a separate issue? Currently song titles don't
update in the skin w/o a 'hard' refresh/reload.

I wouldn't call it a separate issue, but there isn't support for that
yet. I'll put it on my 'todo'.

[slim] Re: Random Play is SO Non-Random!

2006-03-01 Thread Mike Anderson

^^^ It could be random either way, it just depends on the sampling
algorithm.

The difference is between random sampling with replacement (songs can
be repeated) and random sampling without replacement (a song can only
be played once).

Can music magic do pure random play? I thought it followed some kind of
