[slim] Exbrowse3 still under development??

2006-05-07 Thread twynne

I've installed 6.2.2 and was hoping it might resolve an issue I've had
with the Exbrowse 3 skin for some time. When I add songs to the
playlist (either using the 'play' or 'add to playlist' links) it seems
to add the songs in alphabetical order rather than track number.

The only workaround I've found is to use a different skin to queue up
music, then switch to Exbrowse 3. The other skins work as expected, so
I assume the issue to be specific to Exbrowse3.

Has anyone else seen this? And anyone know of a fix/workaround?

Thanks,

Tom

Get into the habit of reading the changelog. If an issue isn't noted
in there, it isn't fixed.

When I add songs to the
playlist (either using the 'play' or 'add to playlist' links) it seems
to add the songs in alphabetical order rather than track number.

Default2 and ExBrowse3 need updating by the author. This is a known
issue, and we're all waiting with baited breath

You and I both know that changelogs rarely show *everything* that was

thought it worth asking anyway.

Here's hoping for a future release...

Then it occurred to me that I had also run some heavy speaker cable to
the same point, so I sent the power down that and the squeezebox is
happy.

I shall try using all the wires, although it is working now, using the
speaker wires. The audio on this squeezebox is not connected, only one
is conected and the others are synchronised to that, so I wouldn't
notice any noise in the audio out...

2006-05-07 Thread ipodscool

There is a tiny app called "Process Tamer" available as freeware here:

http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/proctamer/index.html

Not only will this set the process priority of Slimserver to the
setting of your choice but it will also monitor other processes
silently in the background. Of course you could just use it to monitor
SS & ignore the rest. It works for me & only occasionally do I have to
intervene & instruct it to ignore.

It's the Windows Task Manager being dumb (or rather, it's been designed
to stop you doing stuff like that). Try Sysinternals Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

If you want to do it every time the service starts then a couple of
options have been mentioned recently (search for "priority" or
something like that). I use Beyond Logic Process:
http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/processutil/processutil.htm
and use a Windows scheduled task to run it every 15 minutes.

I personally feel this statement is inaccurate. The 'home PC' as we
know it will change very little in the next 3 to 5 years, aside from
OS, interface standards (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc), and hardware advances
(CPU, HD-DVD or Blue-Ray for optical drives, hard drive technology
advances, memory advances, etc).

The 'home PC' industry is a billion dollar market in peripheral sales;
it's unlikely an appliance-based evolution will occur as quickly as you
speculate. Just my 2 cents.

We're almost saying the same thing from different sides - the billion
dollar peripheral market is exactly the 'appliances' I'm talking about,
and some are already here. For example, printers that will print
directly from your camera - no messing about with the PC required.

Oh, absolutely. But I think they'll be taking a backseat to the
appliance/peripheral market. You can already see the change in
emphasis in Dell's advertising.

[slim] Re: How much longer for a really slim SlimServer?

2006-05-07 Thread EnochLight

A backseat? I'll believe it when it happens. I typical desktop PC/Mac
has so much more versatility and power than a single "appliance" based
peripheal. Printers that can be hooked up to your camera and monitors
with TV-tuners are fine and dandy for some, but most will still prefer
a monitor, keyboard, and mouse for their window into the Internet and
the ability to:

- Surf the web, email, word processing, etc
- Video gaming
- Record and edit movies (home, commercial, TV, etc)
- Record and edit music (production, DAW's, etc)
- Photo editing and picture library management
- Media servers (Squeezeboxes, Rokus, movies, whatever)

...I could go on forever. Specialized appliances have been around for
a very long time; we still have desktop/laptop computers in the
foreground though...

But... don't get me wrong: I agree that "appliance" based periph's will
gain in popularity. Windows Vista and Mac's next flavor will keep the
deskstop/laptop market strong though. In the foreground, no doubt.

Assuming that what you want is to be able to control the selection of
your favorite radio stations directly from the Slimserver (in the same
manner as you select your favorite tracks) you can bypass the
SqueezeNetwork altogether and simply create a favorite stations .m3u
file and place it in your playlist directory.

If that's your object I can email you my .m3u file and you can easily
edit that to add your favorite stations...

[slim] Re: SB2 won't play

2006-05-07 Thread Bubba

Yesterday morning, neither my slimserver or iTunes would open. I
supposedly had 818 albums on a 300GB external hard drive. The used
disc space is the same, but now slimserver says I have 460. I was
importing through iTunes onto the external hard drive. I uninstalled
iTunes, because it was not working. I also uninstalled Soft Squeeze
because it had never worked correctly. However, the SB2/slimserver had
worked perfectly for a month, until yesterday.

I'm using FLAC files mainly, on Windows XP. The computer is only two
months old, and I spent two hours yesterday running through diagnostic
tests with a Dell tech because after this happened, the computer would
not re-boot at all. I ultimately had to re-install Windows.

As of yesterday, slimserver 6.2.2 would not open for me. So I
downloaded 6.3.0, which will open, but when I click "Play", it says
"Now Playing" on my slimserver and on the SB2 display, but the typical
indication of play (the music note and adjacent lines dancing up and
down) does not occur.

Does that help?

I've just re-tested 6.5 (nightly from a day or two ago) and for the

2006-05-07 Thread mrtaber

I have noticed this, too. Clipping at the beginning or the end of a
FLAC track. Let's say I'm just playing a playlist. Sometimes,
beginning of the song is clipped, at other times, it's the end--most
often, neither. If it's the beginning, and I hit 'back' to start it
over, it doesn't clip!

Here's hoping they'll figure out what's going on and fix it soon. I
love my Squeezeboxen (I'm still in the honeymoon phase), but it's
really jarring to have a song just "yanked offstage" like in the
cartoons...

[slim] Re: SB3 stopped working - (long)

2006-05-07 Thread Malor

NetBEUI is a wire protocol, like the IP part of TCP/IP. It's just a
format for data packets on an Ethernet. It's pretty simple and
limited, but it works okay for a batch of computers that are locally
connected. (it's not routable, so you can't use it to talk with stuff
outside a local LAN.)

The bug here is probably in either the WPA encryption code on the
router, or the WPA decryption code on the Squeezebox. The packet could
be getting munged in either step, or in some combination of both.

The fact that it works okay in WEP mode makes me believe that both
devices know they should ignore those packets normally.

If forced at gunpoint, I'd bet that it was something in the
Squeezebox's WPA decryption routine that's not quite right. Even if
the Motorola device is encrypting the packet 'wrong', I don't _think_
it should matter... the Squeezebox should detect the invalid packet
type and throw it away. So that's where I'd look first, if I needed to
fix the problem.

That is, however, an extremely unexpert opinion. And obviously, the
easy solution is, "don't use NetBEUI anymore". :)

I am using a laptop with Windows XP home edition with Slim Server 6.5b1
- 7321 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252.

I rewrote standby.bat to first echo "foo" > c:\temp\foo then powerdown.
I hit the poweroff on the remote control and the laptop does not
powerdown and it does not write c:\temp\foo BUT when I click on
standby.bat it works perfectly.

So then I also put standby.bat to execute on the play action, when I
hit play it says "standby.bat" on the slim device (SB3 wired) but yet
still does not work.

So this looks like a permissions problem but I can not figure it out.
Ideas? Thanks.

[slim] Re: I would like better flac to MP3

2006-05-07 Thread bgriffis

I keep a "mirror directory" of mp3's. That is, I've ripped all my music
to F:\FLAC. I then use Media Monkey to transcode all of that music to
F:\MP3.

http://www.mediamonkey.com/

Besides being able batch transcode all your flac files to mp3, it will
also play flac files if you're listening to music directly from your
pc. It's a great program all in all so I recommend giving it a try!

Yes, just disable flac/flac and leave flac/wav. You may also have to
disable wav/flac as otherwise I think it does flac->wav->flac->sb,
which is clever but not quite what we had in mind :)

The good news is he rectified most of the firmware issues, so he may

Interesting - I've got an AMD K6-2 400 MHz. I always wondered how it
would perform running SlimServer.

How much RAM do you have? I have 192 MB for that mobo.

It was running Win98SE but given the unpatched security holes I'll be
switching to Linux on that machine when I power it up again, probably
Ubuntu.

I have a *lot* more tagging work to do to clean up my artists and

In any event, I find slimserver generally performs OK - sometimes I get

I don't necessarily think you're losing the argument. :-) It's just
that when "appliances" first came into being ~5 years ago and analysts
predicted the demise of the PC, technology was different. Appliances
back then were truly dumb devices.

Today's "appliance" has almost as much computing power as a
conventional PC and could only be called an appliance due to its OS or
external connectivity. Take a look at the PocketPC. This is no
organizer of yesteryear. As the gumstix shows, you can run Linux off
that processor.

Appliances as they were first pictured died off because their use was
too limited while their cost was too high. WebTV could only browse the
web and send/receive e-mail, yet it cost 1/2 (?) of what a computer did
at the time. Totally impractical.

So an appliance today is really a PC.

It works fine from the remote, the web interface can be a bit balky
sometimes. I'm running with 256M on that machine. Rescans take a
while (which would probably be less if I tossed another HD into it to
move the SQL database onto a different drive... one of these days..),
but not so painful that I never do them. I do them almost daily. (I
muck with tags a lot and it tends to add artists and never replace
them.)

I enjoyed the Trackstat stuff until I got to around 9000 tracks in
place and then it started getting slow, but it seems that may be
because of a quirk in the way mysql optimizes (or doesn't...) selects,
since it was reading millions of records on my machine instead of using
the index.

I have an p3/800 or so at work that I need to bring home some year,
but... i get mail on it and have a few websites there.

I guess that's what I've been saying. I'm unencumbered by the
historical definition of appliance you're referring to. Yes, today's
and tomorrow's appliances have processing power similar to a PC from
last year, and that's my point (heck, I remember when 64kB gave you an
unimaginable amount of processing power!). Clever people have realized
that they can sell a PC (Xbox) as an appliance, and even more
specialized items like SB3 & BlackBerry are getting bigger chunks of
the market. Which gets me back to where I started - when do we get a
slim Slimserver? Speaking of PocketPCs, it can't be too much longer
until it will be possible to run Slimserver on one of them (or is there
one here already?) Perhaps 'SlimCD' on a memory card, with firewire to
a HD? You never know what some genius is going to come up with I
just know I'll be the first one in line to buy it when I can get a
Slimserver that sits there innocuously like the modem & the router!

2006-05-07 Thread Mark Lanctot

Perhaps what's holding back such devices is storage.

SD/CF capacities are growing but are still nowhere near what's required
for a sizeable lossless library.

Microdrives are bigger but nowhere near big enough.

You still need a 3.5" HDD to store that 100 GB+ worth of data. And for
some, one HDD isn't enough. 500 GB drives are the practical maximum
now, although 750 GB drives have been released. However some want 1
TB+. You just can't fit that much storage into a small device, not
even one 3.5" HDD right now.

...yet!

I keep hearing persistent rumours of holographic storage media that may
make this possible, but so far it's vapourware.

Yes, the only time you really need your processor in the SlimServer
world is for FLAC/MP3 encoding as you rip. That's when you use every
ounce of its power.

For running SS, it's mostly just cruising along. In the "how big is
your library" thread note snarlydwarf is using a 400 MHz PII.

Wow - I'm practically speechless by this comment. But before I
continue, don't take offense nicketynick; I just think that your use of
your personal computer is highly under utilized.

I own a Playstation and an Xbox; although I enjoy gaming on them, my
computer offers gaming that both of those platforms cannot touch. In
fact, I have been doing high-definition gaming on my PC since the late
90's, as most desktop gamers have been doing at greater than 1024 x 768
resolution. It's only been with the XBox 360 released just several
months ago and the soon-to-be released PS3 that Hi-Def gaming comes to
the typical home user.

Great that the consoles finally caught up!

Further more, high-end modelling might be popular in workstations and
computers used at your local weather station or science lab, but the
typical home user it busy:

- Importing their photos from their digital camera and editing them
in Photoshop (or other software) which eats up CPU cycles like no
  tomorrow
- Sync'ing their iPod and managing their music library (or
  Squeezebox).. ;-)
- Importing, recording, and/or editing movies (whether it be
  home-made or commercial)
- Burning DVD's, software, CD's, etc
- Gaming (ofcourse), right down to simple stuff like Solitaire

...and that's just "typical" home user stuff. More specialized areas
include music production (every Hollywood-associated producer worth
their weight in silicon has digital audio/video workstation software
installed on their laptops), education, your typical PowerPoint
presentation for the office - where does it stop?

No, I think that the personal computer/desktop/laptop and the need for
more powerful processors will be around for *SOME* time to come, even
though more specialized appliances might steal some of the limelight.

I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. ;-)
