There haven't been significant updates to the 6.3.x branch since the

I can reach the TS-101 through it's admin interface I know the box is

When I go through the Squeezebox setup it brings up the correct Device

I had this problem when i first got my TS-101. I got round it by going
into the admin interface and changing the ':6000' in the address bar
with ':9000'.

Don't know if it will solve your problem but you appear to have the

You might want to consider Homeplug powerline transceivers. I use
Devolo. They work perfectly, and if you're considering an extra
Squeezebox the cost of them will be partially offset by the fact you
can use them with a wired Squeezebox.

[slim] ShoutCAST problems?

2006-08-08 Thread DrNic

Hi all!
Is anyone else noticing a problem with ShoutCAST?
Either via Squeezenetwork or Slimserver I get stuttering playback -
this was never a problem previously!
I thought that it might be my new internet connection (had to go ADSL 2
- after a move, previously on cable) but after having no problem with
Pandora, radioIO, or SlimPicks I think otherwise!
Had a go at directly tuning in the stations I like via Slimserver and
again, no problems!
I'm not sure what is going on, searched the forums but no one else
seems to be experiencing these problems.
Any ideas?

Nic

PS just to clarify (!) - NO problems with pandora/radioIO or even
direct tune in!

Might want to consider a high-gain antenna.

Kind of a head-scratcher that one would be required though because my
SB3 works at 60-70% signal strength a floor below. Plus I have a 500
kW radio transmitter less than 1 km away.

You may have interference - do you or your neighbours have a 2.4 GHz
cordless phone? Have you checked for competing networks on the same
channel using these instructions:

(solution: change channels)

The denser and thicker the walls, the harder it will be for radio waves

Wireless networking equipment is designed for modern home construction

2006-08-08 Thread evergreen25

I agree the iTunes interface is superior to the current slimserver. My
main complaint with iTunes is that it doesn't support FLAC, but I guess
we can't have everything in life.

I am using a Windows-only plugin that updates the slimserver playlist
from the iTunes Party Shuffle playlist. More info here:
http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer

and here
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25997

If I want to listen at the same time on my computer I use the latest
version of Softsqueeze for Slimserver 6.3 and sync softsqueeze with my
Squeezebox v2. It is working surprisingly well for such a kludgy
solution.

Sorry I can't be of more help with a Mac solution, but maybe you can
glean something from Mr. Craig's good work.

No. That reduction through the wall is a killer, and the reduction
with distance seems high as well.

My SB2 is about 15' horizontally away from my router. There are two
wood frame/drywall walls in between. It gets 85-90% signal, 95% if I
remove the external antenna as I indicated in the edit to my last post.

My SB3 is one level down. I'd guess it's 30' away, with a
floor/ceiling and one wood frame/drywall wall in between. Signal
strength is 65-75%. As I indicated, the SB3 has poorer reception in
any location compared to an SB2. My SB2 was 75-80% in that location.

You should really look at some sort of hard-wiring arrangement or take
a look at a wireless repeater. Hard-wiring would be better though.

[slim] Powered speakers

2006-08-08 Thread bonze

I'm thinking about buying a set of powered speakers for output from an
SB3.
At the moment the output is fed through an old boombox, which works OK,
but is a bit cumbersome and unsightly.

This SB3 is located in a wooden summerhouse at the bottom of the garden
so I don't want anything too 'flashy/metallic' looking.
Something in a nice wood finish would be ideal.

Anyone here using a similar setup?? and could make a recomendation??

I think the Apple speakers, the Ipod Hi-Fi, is a brilliant, low-cost
solution with pretty good sound quality. I am an audiophile with
McIntosh labs equipment, but needed something portable for a summer
house. These worked perfectly, providing inputs from any source and
also connecting directly to the Ipod. It can be battery powered, if
you want to take it on the go, and comes with a simple remote...

this due to changing contractual arrangements 'tween Slim Devices

Try not to buy a leisure centre. It'll be expensive and won't increase
you signal strength - http://www.nbleisuretrust.co.uk/page7.asp.
Try to get the funny round crisp things - www.pringles.com/.

However, it worries me that you get a good signal strength from your
laptop when it is sitiuated next to your SB. To me that points to a
problem with the wireless card in your SB. I remember that there were a
few similar reported problems with the SB1 and 2. The problem seemed to
be that the wireless card had come loose in the box. Reseating it cured
the problem.

I don't know how handy you are with a screwdriver but it may be worth
looking inside. Watch out for invalidating your warranty though (not
that Slim have seemed too worried about this in the past).

cement block wall. The distance between them is 3 metres and I get 95%
signal strength.

[slim] Asian Characters will not display

2006-08-08 Thread ob_kook

I know that this thread has shown up before, but even after tracking
several of them down and reading them through to their entirety, I
cannot solve this problem.

The problem is that:
1. Asian characters in streaming stations will not display properly
(Shoutcast Republic of Korea for example)

2. Ripped songs with unicode will not show up in my music library at
all (folder is there, song is missing). Even some albums which have a
mixture of english titles, Japanese titles, or mixed, the Japanese and
mixed titles will not show up.

I have the following:
SB2 - latest firmware distributed with 6.3.1
WinXP home Dell server with 6.3.1. 8468
Songs ripped in MP3, tagged with a unicode tagger program

I have installed proper unicode fonts (code2000 and cyberbit) in the
proper directory, restarted, have east asian language support installed
on my PC, etc. etc.

Am I missing something? This is driving my crazy...

[slim] Re: SB3 wireless signal strenght

2006-08-08 Thread mrisager

I've upgraded to a better wireless access point (Linksys wrt54gl). That
helped a lot, but there are still occasional dropouts. Signal strength
varies between 10% and 35%

I then build a cantenna. I tried a parabolic type and a pringles type
antenna. I could not see any results out of that

I then upgraded the firmware in my Router to allow for increasing the
transmitting strength which gives me a signal strength of 12-40 %

The minipci card seems to be correctly installed.

Maybe I'll just buy another access point and place it where the
squeezebox can see it. My current access point is located 50ft away and
the signal has to pass 3 cement walls

2006-08-08 Thread bklaas

Interesting, but I'm very much of the same opinion as Jacob and KDF--

1. Sony saddles everything with their proprietary nonsense
2. 320x240 non-touchscreen isn't going to compete with the 800x480
touchscreen on the 770.

I'd be curious to see it in action, and to see how certain usability
issues with the 770 (wifi needs to reconnect after idle time, battery
life, etc.) fare with this thing. But the Mylo isn't coming close to my
gotta have it radar.

FWIW, an integrated QWERTY keyboard is borderline useless for
slimserver functions, IMO. I use a bluetooth keyboard on the 770, but
it only comes in handy for typing emails. Slimserver browsing is very
much a click-touch-browse kind of thing.

You are very lucky that wireless networking is working at all for you.
2' thick granite walls! That'll absorb a good amount of electromagnetic
energy through sheer obstruction of the wave. These walls must block
sound like there's no tomorrow - they are blocking radio waves in the
same way.

Please realize that this is not really Slim Devices' fault - your
situation is very unusual and anything wireless won't work well with
conditions like that.

How's the range on your cordless phone?

True, and the signal increase with distance from the AP is very large.

In the same room with your AP, you should be no lower than ~90% signal
provided the room isn't abnormally large.

Still, 2' thick granite walls will block everything: sound, radio
waves, 18-wheeler trucks out of control, etc. It's amazing anything
wireless is working at all.

It's a pity that SB3 is even deafer... and you cannot upgrade the
antenna ! Hey Slimdevices, listen here !
I tried removing the antenna, but it got worse, as one might assume.
So I'll go shopping for an antenna upgrade for the SB, because the ones
on the AP are not removable.
Should I go for a larger rubber duck, or something like an USR 5482
patch antenna ? Am I right that the connector should be SMA reverse
 plug ?
If SlimDevices will issue an SB4 with improved wireless connection,
I'll add it to my bedroom, I guess.

Sorry, it's not going to work through two feet of rock.

Your best bet is going to be some alternate technology such as
powerline networking or HPNA.

Where wireless fails, many people have had good look with Netgear
powerline ethernet adaptors.

Mark,
this thread is getting interesting, I never had a chance to measure
such vital information about my home... ;-)
The sitting room is 9 by 12 meters, with a thin wood and glass door 3.7
meters high, 2.5 meters wide.
The AP is just outside this door.
58% is measured when the AP is in straigh, unobstructed view of the SB,
at 10.5 meters.
Don't think that, in this situation, outside walls, be it paper or
granite, can matter at all.

Oh so only the exterior walls are granite?

Do you know what the interior walls would be then? If they are
conventional wood frame + drywall then yes, there's something wrong.

I would contact the place where you bought the SB2. It may be a
hardware problem.

Your wireless signal should easily go 10.5 metres in thin air provided
you don't have massive interference, and you don't seem to.
