4. Plugin customizable web interface
Today plugins have to put their information into separate pages in

there
was a way for plugins to integrate their information and
functionallity in the standard slimserver browse pages or at least in
the track details page.

That's something Dean mentioned a long way back (more than a year) when I
published the Bio/Review plugins: have these information right there in
the song info mode of the player or the info page in the web interface.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=14230#8

I recently had a quick look at the player interface, but right now there
really is no way to do it. But as Dean mentioned it, chances might be good
- if someone takes the time to come up with a good idea and a patch :-)

2. Better FF/RW ability. That's one thing I really miss when moving
from CDs.

I actually like the FF/RW functionality (although there's currently a few bugs
to be ironed out in the 6.5 beta) How would you see it being improved?

Also, there's a plugin that presents the song progress as a bar, whereby
up/down will change the position in the song like changing the volume on the
player UI. I use both mechanisms from time to time. The built-in mechanism is
useful for skipping ahead/back a little bit, the plugin is useful when you want
to skip ahead a long way and know the rough time position.

Alternatively consider breaking up long pieces of music into smaller sections
using cue sheets, so you can to the next track.

Hmmm. The error message indicates no genres found, which means it can't
submit tags to LastFM.
It appears you will get these errors even if tag submission is off.
However I can't see what could have generated all the other errors.
I tried this myself with a track with no genres and it worked fine.

You are using the latest code from CVS?

I'd like to see:

* Better handling of plugins:
I imagine a plugin manager utility that checks the web for available
plugins, and which downloads and installs them just by (un)ticking the
relevant boxes. It would also check which plugins work with the
currently installed Slimserver version. I know it isn't hard to
manually download most of them, but it would add a much more
professional look to it. I have several plugins installed that crash my
Slimserver.. I don't know whether there are new versions, whether they
need configuring, or whether somethign else is wrong.. and I've lost
the will to sort it out.

* Ability to either add tags from the remote control, or add the
current track to an arbitrary new or existing playlist, without
effecting the currently playing playlist. I guess that's a plugin
really.

This shouldn't matter: slimserver will fall back to EN if a translation is
missing. And in this case it even says requested language EN :-).

I've seen this behaviour when a plugin has crashed and thus failed to

Perhaps some morphing shapes or dancing dudes or ... whatever. Kind of
like the visualizations that already exist for most software-based

[slim] Re: Problem Playing m4a Files

2006-09-05 Thread MikeWynneDub

Hi Ceejay,

I think it's sorted!

Under Server Settings/File Types there were 3 options for Apple AAC
with the Stream Format as AIFF, FLAC and MP3 respectively.

By deselecting the first two (AIFF FLAC) and leaving only MP3
selected seems to have cured the problem.

Obviously, converting from M4A to MP3 on-the-fly is not gonna be as
'hi-fi' as, say, FLAC but my stereo is not that revealing.

When I upgrade to a kick-ass stereo I reckon I'll have to get wired
(but then I'll also have to re-rip my music to a lossless format).

You were right about everything being wireless (laptop and Squeezebox)
but the WLAN seems to be capable of dealing with streaming MP3 to/from
laptop Squeezebox.

Many, many thanks...

Speaking of visualisations, there are some excellent ones for Winamp. I
dont mean the full screen 3d stuff like AVS, i mean the ones you see in

all moving with the music. They are quite simple and i am sure there
must be some way of porting them over for the SB3. Whoever could find a

[slim] SlimServer for photos?

2006-09-05 Thread j . e . f . f

I had toyed with putting this thought in the SS 7 requests thread (here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874) but I thought that
this was a bit too far off topic. So I'm posting in a new thread:

I used to use an HTPC hooked up to my TV for all of the wonderful
things that HTPC gives you. But there were two inherent problems that
I was never able to fully tackle to my satisfaction:

1. I _HATED_ having a PC in my living room... no matter how much I
tried to silence it I could still hear it, no matter how pretty I tried
to make it, it still looked like a PC, and stuck out like a sore thumb
along side my slick A/V devices.

2. Even though the machine gave me all sorts of cool things I could do,
I really only used it for music and photos. So the HTPC seemed too much
like overkill for the relatively simple things I regularly used it for.

So when I began to explore other options, I came across the Squeezebox,
and I couldn't be happier as far as my music is concerned (how happy I
am that I have gapless playback! I can't believe this was of little
concern to the HTPC folk). Plus it looks sexy as hell sitting next to
my receiver.

But I am left without the ability to view my photos on my TV...
SlimServer does eveything I need for music, so I was wondering if there
was a similar option for photos. Here's what I'm looking for:

- retrieves my photos over my home network, wireless preferred, but
not mandatory (ie: a solution that only plays back from a memory card
or DVD is not what I'm looking for)
- can navigate using an IR remote control. No keyboard or mouse. TV
display could be used to browse entire photo collection.
- ability to view the pictures using the maximum capabilities of my TV
(ie: HD if available, S-Video or composite if my TV is challenged...)
and auto scaling to match TV resolution. (scaling could be done on the
server side to minimize network bandwitdh usage?)
- ability to access this remotely for computer viewing over the
internet would be a HUGE bonus

I picture a SlimServer / Squeezebox type solution for this, where the
server does most of the work and streams the media according to the
capabilities of the display device (much like streaming to a remote
winamp player transcodes to MP3, while streaming the FLAC version to
the local squeezebox), while the hardware device sitting beside my TV
is JUST for retrieval and display. All organization and management
would happen on the server side.

Does anyone know of somethiunbg that does what I am looking for? There
are networked media players that do this kind of thing, but since I'm
only interested in the photo display aspect of them, I was hoping to
keep the cost down by only paying for what I need/want. The ability to
play music is redundant (nothing beats my SB3) and the ability to play
video is something I just won't use (beyond my PVR, I have no desire to
watch video files on my TV -- a behaviour I learned when I had the
ability with the HTPC).

I appreciate any and all suggestions that you may have!
- Thanks!

The XBOX isn't silent, and while the aesthetics are in the eye of the
beholder (I think it's fugly, whereas my roommate thought it looked
pretty cool), doesn't bear much similarity to most consumer AV gear.

Perhaps a slim AV style Mini-ITX enclosure with DC-DC power supply,
network booted from a remote server? That would be an essentially
silent solution in an unobtrusive case. It doesn't really have the
simplicity and ease of use of a Squeezebox for photos, though. It's
also expensive, by the time you add up the various components.

I imagine that the photos would be displayed on a TV? Some models of
TVs now include flash card slots for displaying photos; that would
require no additional hardware, and would also be silent. Of course,
that's a pretty big investment, especially if you have a TV you're happy
with already.

There are also a lot of standalone little devices like this:

http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/datvphshcofl.html

(Caveat Emptor -- above link found through Google, no idea if they're
reputable or not).

For $15, you get a standalone flash card reader with video out. I
suspect the quality matches the low price point, but it may be adequate
for your purposes?

[slim] Re: SlimServer for photos?

2006-09-05 Thread Pale Blue Ego

Some of these ideas were recently discussed on the thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27013

I started out thinking of a networked display screen, but I think a
small, standalone box with networking and various video outputs would
be better.

Goog suggestion, and revealing. It seems that in attempts to use the
latest CVS releases I had a Plugins/LastFM/Plugin.pm and a
Plugins/LastFM/LastFM/Plugin.pm, which were out of sync. I've nuked
everything and reverted to the 11 August release versions
LastFM1113.zip and SlimScrobbler035.zip. That's fixed the misisng
LastFM entry in Player Settings Menus. If my submission problems
persist, I'll have a more controlled attempt to use the CVS versions.

James: thanks for all your patience on this one, there's nothing like
remotely assisting hopeless users!

By the way, does anyone know how to turn on debugging flags from
startup using the deb package init.d script? The obvious route of
setting SLIMOPTION=--d_plugins doesn't seem to work. I can only turn on
the flags at startup by doing a direct /usr/sbin/slimserver --d_plugins
and bypassing the init.d script (which accounts for the fact that I
rarely think of doing it!).

[slim] browse music folders problem

2006-09-05 Thread georgem

Hi;

I'm mostly using 'browse music folders' to find the music to play and I
have run into strange issue. If the folder name is the same as the
artist in tags, I can not browse into the folder. Example of directory
path

/work/slim/jazz/Jarret, Keith

when browsing I've got the following

Title:Jarret, Keith
File Format: Unknown
Location: /work/slim/jazz/Jarret, Keith (Download)
Date Modified:Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 9:09:31 PM

Once I change the name of the last directory to let say temp, browsing
is ok. Has anybody experienced this behaviour ?

George

SlimServer Version: 6.3.1 - 8476 - Linux - EN - utf8, Fedora Core 5.

[slim] Re: Problem updating tags

2006-09-05 Thread wesg

I cleared the tags, and reset them all using TagRename. Rebooted in
between for unrelated reasons.

Cleared database and scaned for music... then all was good and
corrected.

Not sure what exactly the fix was, rebotting or clearing the tags. If
it happens again I'll try and be more scientific.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Clearing the tags is what does it, but more importantly I would like to
know what information/tags slimserver is using for it's album and artis
information that isn't being detected by any of the tagging
aplications. Anyone?

Re: [slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-05 Thread Christopher Biscoe
I haven't tried it in a long time. When I did, the plug-in was still
in Beta, so it had a number of problems. Will definitely check it out.

Thanks,

Chris

This might already be in SS, so forgive me if it is, but I would love
to be able to use the Web to select dynamic, streaming content and

For example, IMHO, KCRW is one of the world's greatest public radio
stations (no affiliation, promise). One of the really cool things
they do is archive all of their shows on a searchable page on their
website. Some of these shows are music based (for example, a one-hour

interview and performance session with the Flaming Lips, or Tom
Waits, or whatever), some of which are news/information based. What
would be amazing is the ability to select one of these archived shows

and instead of playing with Windows Media, Real Audio or Itunes/
Quicktime, but rather, send to a Slim agent, that could then play
through Squeezebox. Of course, I know there are ways to record or
archive locally and then add those to the slim playlist, but this
takes considerable effort and sometimes these broadcasts are not
something that you would want to preserve for multiple listenings.

I realize that this would be a technically challenging, but why stop
a boy from dreaming...

So, rather like AlienBBC does for the BBC's stations?

Have you tried this? Its another of the world's greatest public radio
stations! :)

Thanks Jack,
but there is something else causing this problem. I cleared out
everything in Server Settings Formatting Guess Tags and it is
still duplicating the album like the pictures attached above. There is
something somewhere in the tag information that slimserver is reading
that is not visible in any of the tagging applications.

Had to go look at the pictures...I have had this problem before, and it was a problem with id3v1 and v2 tags -- mp3tag didn't show a difference I could see, and doesn't show both tags at the same time. Anyway, the problem went away after I deleted the v1 tags entirely and did a clear-and-rescan.

I'd actually guess it has more to do with the space and/or the comma
than the fact that the tag matches. Try chaging it to test test or
test, test and see what happens.
