Assuming you are in a country with 60Hz power, its a ground loop. If you are in England, and have a 60Hz hum in the land of 50hz power, then I don't know. Something changed. Unplug all your stuff, plug things back in one at a time. See what causes it. Change that thing. It is best to use a star powering scheme: run all your audio gear, amps, squeezebox, etc off the same circuit. Get a power strip and plug them all in. In the US, do not just cut off the ground pin (third, round connection on almost all power plugs). It is dangerous and against the Electrical Code. [slim] Cannot connect to network
My friend has an SB3 and running wirelessly to SS 6.5.1 12/31 daily on Win XP. All has been running flawlessly for the past 4 months. The router is a Linksys WRT54G. The problem he began having (quite suddenly) is that suddenly the SB3 lost connection with the server and could no longer connect to either it or Squeeze Network. We tried to troubleshoot a number of different ways including turning off wireless security, assigning an IP address, and even running wired all to no avail. In DHCP mode, it will eventually timout and come back with "cannot find DHCP server". In assigned IP address mode, it simply cannot connect. I've run out of ideas of what to try next - can anyone help? What I did so far: Installing Windows XP, incl. servicepack & updates Installing the appropriate drivers Installing the latest nighty version of SlimServer Setting the permissions (see above) nothing else (esp. no anti virus progs, etc.) Tried to scan my library: start at 03:33 finished 03:50 "Your music library contains 1407 albums with 18083 songs by 751 artists." What I meant was... if you're listening to mp3's, I would be gobsmacked if you can tell the difference between a transporter and an unmodified Squeezebox at one eighth the price... An SB3 is pretty good, you know! As for the mp3 vs FLAC thing - yes, time changes all things especially related to technology. And if your MP3's sound good to you, there's no need to re-rip them. However it would be prudent, now that disc space is so cheap, to rip new music in FLAC now, just in case you find that you can tell the difference in the future. [slim] Transporter questions
After searching, I can't find hard answers. First, concerning ALAC playback. The files play fine through my Mac Mini. However, some files (always the same files) wont play through the Transporter. They exhist on the wireless network and when I push play, the song shows on the TP display, but no sound. I have attempted to change setting within the file type encoding, but no luck. I am running 6.5. I tried 6.5.1 after deleting 6.5 and still no luck. Second question, I am using balanced XLR out to my (pre amp) Anthem AVM 50 balanced in and use 2 channel direct mode. I have a 5 channel Anthem MCA 50 amp. Is this the best connection to use? I see some people go unbalanced directly into an amp, is this because of a lack of balanced inputs? If the above method is correct, I gather I set the volume to max, and bypass the digital volume control? Anything I may be missing? On another note, as good as I know the Anthem seperates are, I am truly amazed of the audio quality the Transporter provides. I bought it hoping, but not believing $2000.00 would would make it a worthy purchase. With a 30 day return policy, I had nothing to lose. The shipping box is now stored in the garage, and I am more than thrilled! Has anyone seen my wife?! Actually, she too is amazed at the improvement, and I love her for it. For some reason Slimserver can't play them... how are these files stored? Is there a permissions issue? (I make no pretense of understanding how Windows does permissions, it always seems they superglued a multiuser permission system with access rights over a single user OS that lets you do whatever you want... but sometims things like "services" can't read regular files if they get ownership changed...) A permissions issue on Windows would lead to a situation where you could see the filenames, but not actually open the files. (And, again, remember that on most Windows installs Slimserver runs as a service, not as a regular user, so being able to play them with WMP will tell you whether the file is corrupt or not, but not the permissions.) [slim] Bach to the drawing board......music missing from Slimserver (yet again)
In the wake of (another's) solved Mystery of the Missing Janacek, I present in hope and anxiety and with a plaintive request for aid, a further Christmas conundrum: the Case of the Walkabout Bach. Last week, according to Slimserver, I had around 600 albums ripped. This week, I seem to have 335. What has happened in the interim, I have absolutely no idea. If anybody else has any clues, I'd be very grateful to hear them. I'm running an eMac 800MHz with iTunes, music stored on a separate LaCie Triple 250Gb HD. Nothing about this setup has changed recently. SlimServer is set to look at the iTunes library in the usual place (/users/username/music/iTunes), and for the music in the correct volume (/volumes/volumename/iTunes/iTunes music). Nothing about that has changed. Among the missing albums are all of the Gardiner/Monteverdi Choir Bach Cantata Pilgrimage so far released, which I'd ripped over the last six months or so (wonderful music, incidentally) - except for the one I ripped a week before Christmas which is, oddly enough, the Christmas one (vol. 15). I've checked the relevant folders. All of the Pilgrimage series is shown in iTunes. They are all - as carefully retagged - under the same artist, and the files themselves are all, as right and proper, contained in close proximity in the same artist folder on the LaCie drive. There appears to be no difference between the position, folder or file for vol. 15, and those for vols. 1,7,8,10 etc. iTunes plays them all with great alacrity. However, vol 15 exists in Slimserver, and vols 1,7,8,10 etc do not. That also leaves another 300 albums that also seem to have vanished without trace, but are less clearly near-identical. I have tried: deleting/rebuilding my iTunes library (although the contents of that are clearly correct); pointing Slimserver to the precise addresses of said library and to the music folders; pointing Slimserver to no addresses, but specifying merely "use iTunes"; leaving the "look for playlists in" field blank; filling ditto field in; rescanning (times about nine, at the last approximation); installing the latest nightly rebuild of 6.5.1; screaming a lot, which seemed to help at the time, but did not noticeably restore any music. I am also running Coverscout and CDPedia, although why these should have any effect, I have not the faintest idea, either, being completely and utterly baffled. So, if anyone does have any ideas, I'd be very grateful indeed. Oh, and while I'm on the whinge, Slimserver doesn't see all my carefully collected artwork, either, even though iTunes and CDPedia assure me that it is there, and visible. These helpful applications also assure me that the album count that Slimserver previously recorded was accurate, and should, if the world were a fairer place, be unchanged. Thanks in advance. [slim] Re: WMA problem
Thanks for the ideas Brian. Here are the answers to your questions: 1) My guess is that tagging is the issue, I'm hoping that there is a way to change a number of files at once. 2) I can find them when I go to Browse Music Folder, but they won't play on SB. 3) I can play the "ex-WAV" WMAs in Windows Media Player just fine. 4) According to the properties for each file they are "not protected". 5) Also, as a side note. Before I posted here, I did try to convert a group of these files to MP3 to see if they would play on SB and that didn't work either. I guess all of these leads back to tagging which I'll have to work on slowly. [slim] Vista Sideshow
I've read that Vista includes a new technology called Sideshow which can feed simple imformation to a variety of small screens such as might be found on mobile phones. I wonder then if Sideshow might be used in conjunction with Slimserver to display album artwork perhaps on a digital picture frame in the same room as my Squeezebox. Wouldn't that be cool! Cooler still would be picture based browsing just like the new iTunes allows but from my Squeezebox remote! bpa, I believe you're wrong. ShoutCast, RadioTime, and Pandora, etc. are, of course, separately owned and operated, and notice I did not mention them in my post, because my criticism does not concern these separately owned and operated project - and notice they're all at a high level, which is convenient. [slim] Re: SlimServer - A pain in the ass...
Just to chip in with a few assorted views... - while I agree that Windows isn't much of an OS, please don't get the idea that you can't run SS satisfactorily on it. You can. Scanning doesn't take forever for everyone. - if you're lucky, it may well be that simply building a new box will avoid whatever nasty is lurking in your current one. For people who have more time than money (perhaps not most transporter buyers!!) just rebuilding might be worth a go - if you're not so lucky, it may be something odd about your library in which case you'll have exactly the same problem as before (well, slightly quicker as you'll have a faster CPU). - this has been discussed at length elsewhere - so I don't mean to open up the question all over again but rather to point out that there is another POV - but IMHO RAID is a really bad way to protect yourself against music library data loss, as it offers no protection at all against a whole class of likely problems including user error and rogue software. While a good hardware RAID can speed things up, a poor one (especially if its in software) can really slow things up, too. - make sure you install a 6.5.1 nightly - no-one seems to have mentioned this before ... please tell us you're not really going to use a Transporter just to play mp3s! IMHO, the Slimserver web interface could be a lot faster, but here it's still only a couple of seconds at most. One of the recent Slimserver updates apparently added a lot of internal threading. That noticeably sped up the web interface. Make sure you're running recent code. Let me add a hearty amen to the other suggestions to run Slimserver on Linux, not Windows. Windows is a terrible server OS. Scratch that, Windows is a terrible OS, period. Jettisoning all that virus scanning cruft is just one of many reasons to dump it. Here are some other suggestions to speed up a file server. First, avoid external USB hard drives. In my experience, a USB 2.0 external drive is less than half as fast as an internal drive. Second, if you have the cabinet space and the budget, consider RAID. Without RAID (or a current backup), a failed drive is a major disaster. (Do you really want to re-rip a thousand CDs?) With RAID, a failed drive is just a minor nuisance. RAID can also speed up read performance quite noticeably. Linux has a very nice software RAID subsystem that avoids having to spend money on hardware RAID controllers. --Phil ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
