[slim] SqueezeBox3 Remote protection

2007-08-18 Thread jordi . c

Hi,

I have looked in the forum but cannot find anything related to
protection for the remote control.

I would like to keep my remote controls of the SqueezeBox how they're
now.

Because they are glossy I think scratches can be seen easily. Also the
text on the buttons will wear out with extensive use on most remote
controls.

Kind Regards.

Re: [slim] Buying a new Squeezebox...... or not?

2007-08-18 Thread mortslim

I don't intend to offend anyone with this response but I find it quite
funny that people are discussing the merits of an audio device based
upon its logo rather than on what it sounds like.

By the way, I like the way the squeezebox sounds. I use the Rhapsody
service with it and I believe the source material has a lot to do with
the final output. It sounds great.

I use the digital coax out with a Yamaha RX-V659 - AV receiver and a
pair of Yamaha NS-777 3-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speakers using two
channel stereo mode and "pure direct" where the receiver doesn't
process the sound at all. This setup sounds audiophile to me without
the audiophile budget.

And further on the subject of labels as it relates to the socalled
audiophile world, I have browsed some audiophile magazines at newstands
and I am amazed how much some people will pay for socalled audiophile
equipment. In my own opinion, it is an utter waste of money.

I studied economics in college and I remember an analogous example
involving women who go to a department store to buy lipstick and prefer
the fifty dollar brand over the five dollar brand even though in blind
tests there was no difference. It seems they received some type of
psychic income from the label, even though the quality was no
different. I think the same thing applies to "audiophiles".

And do your friends who see your equipment really judge you based upon
the labels of your toys? You might want to think about getting new
friends.

Just my two cents.

You've expressesd my feelings exactly. Every week I check both the
Infrant/Netgear and the Slimdevices sites for any news about the 6.5.3

extraordinarily shabby behavior by both Infrant and Slimdevices to let
this question fester for weeks on end without any kind of response to

But that _is_ what Logitech is doing. They've just drawn the line
somewhere between US$300 (Logitech SB3) and US$2000 (Slim Devices
Transporter) rather than somewhere between the SB3 and the ~$250
"Logitech Wireless DJ".

Interesting question, and in practice, probably not that much better

deinstalled slimserver and all mysql-common with apt again, removed the

Now slimserver is listening again on port 9000 and scanning my music

Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5.3 & 6.5.4 for Infrant NAS NV+

2007-08-18 Thread usbethjim

I second that emotion - could/would someone please help us ReadyNAS
users out?

Infrant/Netgear remains silent on this issue. No response from them on
any of my inquiries on their forum.

Will Slim Devices/Logitech fess up on this?

Is the ReadyNas support OVER?

When 6.5.3 was announced at least ya'll mentioned Infrant in the text.
Now this 6.5.4 announcement does not mention them at all.
The download button for ReadyNas has disappeared from your download
page. PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE address the issue of the future
relationship between Slimserver and ReadyNAS.

The reason I bought this streaming solution was the SB3 coupled with
the ReadyNAS. Although others bemoan the performance of Slimserver on
the ReadyNAS - it works great for me. I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO RUN
ANOTHER PC JUST FOR THE TUNES.

Are there copyright issues that prevent Slim Devices from generating
their own version of Slimserver for the ReadyNAS?

Can anyone help me on this - how difficult is it to generate the
Infrant/ReadyNAS version of Slimserver?

Thank you
Jim

Re: [slim] SB3 developed a firmware problem ?

2007-08-18 Thread mack

Thanks for the ADD tip. In the meantime, I found the problem and have a
workaround. Apparently, its a strange network problem. I noticed that
the SB traffic has a lot of retransmits so I tried to lower the MTU on
the server's side and the problem disappears when MTU<650. With
650800
it loses so many packets it fails to finish initializing. Strangely, I
don't have that problem between other hosts on my network so it may be a
connector problem on the SB side, creating noise that messes long
packets. (Already changed the cable). For now I'll just use MTU=600
and be able to listen to some music (delivered in the form of somewhat
short TCP packets). :)

Why can't they keep their branding separate. Plenty of other

For several months now SB3s have been shipping with a Logitech logo. Do
a search around these forums and you'll find a few threads with others
expressing feelings similar to yours, as well as a photo or two of
Logitech-branded SB3s. You'll probably have to go to the used market,
or a supplier with some relatively old stock, to find a Slim
Devices-branded SB3. Or I understand the Transporter still has a Slim

[slim] Buying a new Squeezebox...... or not?

2007-08-18 Thread glen66

Hi All

Just popped back on after a long absence... slimserver working
perfectly, but just upgraded it to linux, and thought I misinstalled
the software, what was a logitech logo doing on slimserver.

Then I realised why..

I was looking a buying a new squeezebox for the living room, and moving
my old one upstairs (I want an all black model).

However I DO NOT want a Logitech branded box on top of my Cyrus
equipment.

The SB has always been a talking point but to be quite honest in my
opinion logitech kit, apart from some of their mice and keyboards is
rubbish. I just don't feel right having logitech kit hooked up to that
standard of hi-fi.

Looking at the pictures on the slim devices site, the sb3 appears to
have the slimdevices logo..

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks in advance

Glen

Yes, that should have been better documented.

but don't forget that no-one is forced to update their software.

Re: [slim] Radiotime and Realaudio

Is there any way to listen to RAM streams without having PC on? If not,
does anyone know if Slimdevices plan to make RAM streams supported by
the device itself? Thanks.

Thanks for this link. Used it to finally get around to buying an SB3;

Not a buzzword per se, but the thing that bugs me is when people use
the present tense to describe things in the past (usually on news
programs or documentaries). For example, "1939: Hilter invades Poland"
instead of "In 1939, Hilter invaded Poland". I can't remember when it
first started, but it seems to have become the default way of recapping
past events.

Seems to be working now, think the SB had assigned itself a different IP
address, and so virus firewall was blocking it. have assigned a static
one now and it seems fine.

Can't be doing sales any good

Re: [slim] SB3 developed a firmware problem ?

Unplug the squeezebox, count to 3 (because I am superstitious), plug it
back in, and hold the ADD button on the remote.

That will reset it to factory defaults.

[slim] debian apt install - rebuild/reseed mysql instance

2007-08-18 Thread guy_smiley

Been running a slimserver with my old school pre-squeezebox slimp3 since
forever and only upgraded to the mysql support package since I found the
slimserver in the apt system on this last debian etch install.

Anyway, I'm not real deep with the mysql chops and after I did an
upgrade on the apt packages today, my slimserver isn't accepting any
connections. Here's what happened in the slimserver log after the
upgrade:

I suspected the mysql upgrade happened out of sequence or something and
tried to rename the mysql files to see if a subsequent restart of the

/var/cache/slimserver/MySQL/

That didn't work. Am I chasing the wrong problem?

Many thanks,

Re: [slim] Slimserver Startup problem on mac

2007-08-18 Thread Nikhil

Thanks .. That did it!

As much as I love my SqueezeBox and SlimServer, I think my parents
could never have been able to troubleshoot something like this by
themselves.

There really needs to be some sort of self contained, self updating
server box, which doesn't need any configuration, and which either
contains its own hard drive or can directly be attached to a
USB/firewire/eSATA external drive that serves all the
SqueezeBoxen/Transporters. (Not as a replacement for the current form
of Slimserver, but simply as an option - so geeks such as myself can
continue to have all the flexibility we desire).

Yeah yeah I know you can configue your NAS to run slimserver - I had my
Buffalo PPC Linkstation running slimserver 6.1 for several months
extremely well, but that's really not for my parents. They just want to
listen to music .. not play around with computer settings.

Nice remotes that make use of all this Jive work will be icing on the
cake. This would put the Squeezebox+Slimserver combo way ahead of the
Sonos System IMHO - Sonos still requires a NAS with SMB shares, or a
running computer with shares open.
