[slim] Playlists are empty
I got my first Squeezebox within the last couple months and, other than one or two issues at start up, this is the first problem I've had with Slimserver or the Squeezebox. My Slimserver is running on Linux, Debian Sarge, but this is likely not at all a Linux issue, so I'm asking it here. I'm using the next to latest Slimserver version and don't want to upgrade yet, since I have to upgrade the rest of the system first. I found a very large collection of old time radio shows, which I love. I had not anticipated this and wanted to make a few alterations to my directory layout so I could include all the radio shows but still keep them in separate directories from my music. Previously I just had this setup: music: /data/Audio/flac playlists: /data/Audio/playlists Slimserver music directory: /data/Audio/flac Slimserver playlist directory: /data/Audio/playlists Then I moved to this setup: music: /data/Audio/Music radio plays: /data/Audio/RadioPlays playlists: /data/Audio/playlists Slimserver music directory: /data/Audio Slimserver playlist directory: /data/Audio/playlists I ran into problems with this because playlists did show up, but they were all empty. Every playlist in the directory was visible in Slimserver, but they were empty. These are M3U playlists I've created by other programs and I never had a problem with them until now. When Slimserver was not reading the playlist contents, I thought there might be an issue with them being within the audio directory, so I moved it to: playlists: /data/AudioPlaylists Slimserver playlist directory: /data/AudioPlaylists Everything else has been kept the same. I've rescanned the playlists many times and rescanned the entire collection once, but it's made no difference. The playlists are seen and listed as playlists, but Slimserver sees them as empty. Why isn't Slimserver reading the contents of my playlists? Thanks for any help on this! -- HalNineThousand HalNineThousand's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12392 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37944 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Help! Bad WiFi-reception
Hi, i just got around to testing my new SB3, but the thingy seems to have very bad Wifi-reception. I tried the new one out in the same places as the old one, but the buffer doesn't really fill up and sooner or later there are dropouts (well, rather sooner than later). Signal strength is 40%-50%. The old one has 50%-60% and works like a charm. What can I do except sending the new box back? Re: [slim] Making a "Fave" Playlist
Hey Barry, I read your post with interest as it's the same path I went down a couple of weeks ago. Seemed no matter what I did it just didn't categorise the way I wanted it to. However, having read erland's comments - erland;222993 Wrote: > Unless you have already tried it, I would try to do a full rescan again. > > I'm using ; as separator myself and the only thing I needed to change > to make it work was the "Multiple items in tags" setting. > > I'm not sure what it will do if there is a space in the tags, so you > might want to check that also if you haven't done so. > > Maybe there might be differences between different file formats ? I'm > using FLAC format on all my music where it works. - I wondered if I had inserted a space before/after the ";" so I tried it again... and it works fine. I can confirm that you must have the "Multiple items in tags" server setting in place, otherwise the tagged songs get a "genreA;genreB" genre instead of being listed seperately under "genreA" & "genreB". I'm using server v6.5.3, and FLAC. Re: [slim] measuring energy consumtion Squeezbox and Synology DS107+..
Yes, it takes power. The SB is never "off". If it were it could not display clock, RSS news feeds, etc. and couldn't start playing music when you want because it is the conduit through which you control slimserver. It is "on" continuously, even though sometimes the display fools you into thinking it is off or in standby mode. Yes, it takes power to listen to music but in the overall scheme of things, 350 kWh/yr is nothing. Think of the power you're "wasting" by keeping Slimserver running 24/7. If you're that concerned about it, become a pod person instead. You can eliminate the need for a computer, amplifier, and source components to all be running at the same time. That will save a lot more than 350 kWhr/yr. Let me clue you in on a tried and true problem solving strategy that works for any problem. When you're out to solve some problem, such as excessive power consumption, take care of the things that will have the biggest impact first. What things around the home take the most power? Water heaters, air conditioners/heaters, refrigerators, laundry appliances. Start living without hot water. Purchase only dry and canned food needing no refrigeration, and prepare them in portions that leave no left-overs that require refrigeration. Stop drinking cold milk, beer, juice. Eat meat (probably not...)? Raise it and slaughter it yourself to avoid having to refrigerate it. Laundry? Wear your clothes in cold shower and wash them at the same time you wash your body. Turn off heat and AC. You can bundle-up in winter, and stay cool with stored rainwater in summer. We could extend that a little to say "what is the purpose of controlling my personal power consumption?" to which we might answer "To keep the earth alive a little longer". OK, so now we look to see where the big culprits of destroying the greenness of the earth are: industry. Mining, automobile manufacturing, etc., all use huge amounts of power. Entire power generation plants are built to keep factories running. Any factory on earth uses more power in an hour than you will use in a lifetime. Now you have to ask yourself "where shall I put my efforts- fighting the degreening of the earth on a global scale or by turning off a few lights at home?" I think it would be better to make a global impact. Use that always-on computer not just to serve music (no doubt world-music) but to communicate and organize like-minded people around the world. Join Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and Habit for Humanity and help wherever/whenever you can. Oh, while you're at it, put Seti at Home on your server to run while you are sleeping. You might find aliens! I kinda wish SD had put a power control infront of the VFD's heating element so when brightness is 0 it's fully off.. but mostly it doesn't matter because I use my SB3 as a clock and weather monitor. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37915 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

They are grouped into different groups in a tree like hierarchy and the play icons are only available on the leaves. If you don't like to see these automatically created playlists, you can hide them using the "Enable/Disable playlists" link in the Dynamic Playlist web interface. marlar;222935 Wrote: > If I create a new playlist, let's call it mytest, using the instructions > in your Wiki, it shows up on the list afterwards as it should. If I then > click the play icon, the Squeezebox says "Failed mytest"The failed message > can occur due to two reasons: 1. The playlist you created didn't match any tracks in your library. 2. There is a bug somewhere in the SQL Playlist code that causes some playlist not to work correctly. To get more information I would suggest that you do as follows: 1. Goto "Server Settings/Plugins" in the SlimServer web interface and find the "SQL Playlist" section. In the bottom of this section there is a flag related to debugging messages, activate this. 2. After you have activated the debugging messages, goto the playlist again and hit play. 3. When the playlist fails open up a web browser and goto: http://localhost:9000/log.txt Look if you see any errors in the log, if you can't see anything wrong, post the log here and I will try to see if anything looks strange. You can also post what parameters you have changed, marked, unmarked in the playlist you created. As a guide you should only change a the default values if you want to limit the playlist contents based on that value. So if you just create a new playlist without changing any options you usually get a playlist that contains the whole library. If you select a genre in the "Included genres" parameter the playlist will be limited to tracks that belong to that specific genre. If you select a genre in the "Excluded genres" parameter, the playlist will be limited to all tracks besides those that contain the genre you checked. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and RandomPlayList plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37893 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The Playlist Manager plugin: http://www.hergest.demon.co.uk/Music/slim/PlaylistManPlugin.htm This plugin makes it possible to hold a key down on the currently playing song in the "Now Playing" menu, and you will get to choose from a number of playlists you like to put the track in. 2. The TrackStat plugin together with Dynamic Playlist and SQL Playlist plugins. The TrackStat plugin makes it possible to rate songs directly in SlimServer or with SqueezeBox remote. Also found files with "compilation-yes" which dont work. Thecus provides the framework to install third party modules. The module for Slimserver is built by users. Andreas in the Thecus forums has done most of this work. It is not controlled by Thecus. Re: [slim] Can I exclude albums from random mix?
Erland, I have some problems which may or may not be related to the fact that I run 6.3.1. Or maybe I just do something wrong. First, SQLPlayList 1.10.1 as you recommend, does not work at all. I get the error: 404 Not Found: plugins/SQLPlayList/sqlplaylist_newplaylisttypes.html Well, 1.17 seems to work, partly ... If I create a new playlist, let's call it mytest, using the instructions in your Wiki, it shows up on the list afterwards as it should. If I then click the play icon, the Squeezebox says "Failed mytest". But then web interface then shows the page for Dynamic Playlist, starting with items like: Albums/ Artists/ Genres/ etc. At the bottom I see the names of normal standard playlists. Only these playlists have the play icon. If I click on for example Albums/ I get a new list starting with Least played/ Most played/ etc. These have no play icon. At the end there is Albums played long ago All albums etc. which has the play icon. These plays fine on the Squeezebox. Does all this make any sense to you? Am I missing a step somewhere? Re: [slim] SlimServer refuses to play certain mp3s...
I have a similar problem with mp3-files. I am rather new with SB. I have a dual-boot system xp-ubuntu and so far am using SB and internet only with ubuntu linux. All songs I recently loaded down work fine. All (older) songs I copy from windows into my linux music folder are not played (downloads as well as files converted into mp3 with itunes). If click in slimserver ("music folder") on the song to see its information I can add it to the playlist but it will not play. Song information reads: filename, "no artist, no album, no genre", file format and length, location and date modified. I gave one of these mp3s to a friend of mine with an older version of slimserver (6.5.1?)- it works fine, file information is present. I can also see title, artist... with the exlporer/file manager. Interestingly I found some songs, which recently I copied also to my windows directory. If I copy these songs back into my music folder they wont play (after rescan), if I use the same ones from a subfolder of my music folder they work fine! The difference when looking at file information is that the ones that work have an extra info after "genre" saying "compilation - yes" (info about artist/genre is missing, but that is missing in the mp3 file too) So maybe it is just a problem of the right configuration of slimserver - i have not changed the presets of 6.5.3/4. I havent looked closer at tagging but i think that unlikely to be the problem(?). -- raidard raidard's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37070 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Network problems
Hi. I am a (normaly) happy owner of a Squeezwebox, but in the pat minth i have more and more problems with the connection to the wireless network. It started with problems when i switched from squeezenetwork to slimserver and back again - the it happened tat the connection to my wireless network was lost, and it could take me hours to reestablish the connection. As the problems was getting worse i assumed that i had a wireless network problem so i boughr a new wireless router (Linksys WRT54). After a short period of time the problems started over again, and i found out that a reset of the squeezebox to factory settings would enable me to connect to the wireless network. As it is now it often happens that the sound suddently are gone and the display on the squeezebox are blank, and it is getting more and more difficult yo connect to wireess network. Right now i have tried more than 2 hours without succes. The message on the display sais : Problem : Cannot find specified wireless network. I have upgraded the firmware in my router the the newest version, and i have no problem connecting my laptop standing the same place. Does anyone have an idea what my problems are. [slim] Making a "Fave" Playlist
I have about 6800 tracks in my collection. I usually just run a random playlist with most genres included, but I want to have a means of creating a more restricted "best of" playlist containing my favorite stuff (perhaps 5-10% of the total), but still running across multiple genres. This would be mainly for times when I'm occupied with things like exercising or doing chores, and don't want to fiddle with the remote to skip unwanted tracks. My first thought was to systematically browse through my collection (not all in one session, obviously!), and when I hear a track that was a "fave", add it to the "zapped" playlist. When this was done, the zapped playlist could then be copied as a fave playlist. But this seems like a very cumbersome procedure, and it means that every track must be played, at least momentarily, even if I already know it's a "fave". An approach based on tags seems to make more sense. Then I could browse through my collection, independent of slimserver, using a tag editor to mark the faves, and listening to the tracks only when necessary. I noted from the wiki that I could create multiple genre tags by using a separator such as ";", and then informing slimserver about it in the server settings. This sounded like just what I needed, so I fired up the tag editor, picked out some tracks, and altered the genre tags from "Rock" to "Rock;Fave", "Folk" to "Folk;Fave", etc. I anticipated that after a re-scan, slimserver would show a new genre "Fave" in the genre list, and I would be all set. Alas, what it actually came up with is a bunch of new genres like "Rock;Fave" - one for each combination. Not exactly what the doctor ordered. So, what went wrong? Did I misinterpret what needs to be done in Server Settings -> Behavior -> Multiple Items in Tags? I simply entered a ";" without the quotes there. Or, is there a better way to do this? A plugin, perhaps? I welcome your thoughts... Barry -- Barry McLarnon VE3JF Ottawa, ON ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Metallic noise with mp3 files
The audio pathway from the SB3->amp->speakers is clean, as you demonstrated with your FLAC test. There are no audible artifacts on a 320kbps MP3, so you've demonstrated it's not artifacting. The only possible problem I can imagine is at the MP3 encoder/decoder level. If you disable built-in MP3 decoding in SlimServer, and the problem goes away, that will tell you that the firmware decoder is buggy (and that the server decoder is fine). I seriously doubt that but maybe you've got some special MP3s. If it's a firmware decoder bug, file a bug. If it's not...sheesh, I dunno. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Bandwidth consumption
My experience with Homeplug, even my Panasonic Homeplug "AV", is that it does not go much over 4-5 Mega Bits per second. At least in my home electrical system they don't. I have both Draft-N 2.0 and Homeplug AV installed at home, and neoither deliver close to what the adverts promised. But the Draft N environment is at least 3-4 times quicker than the Homeplug AV. Re: [slim] Metallic noise with mp3 files
Thank you for your answers. Some additional info: - I have tried different bitrates, up to 320 - I use the analog output, no separate DAC (although I am considering it) - I only used WMP to see if it was a problem with EAC and the problem is there with mp3s 'acquired elsewhere' I know how overcompressed mp3s sound like and the noise resembles that, but with overcompressed mp3s you hear the artifacts with cymbals for example but for me the noise follows bass frequencies, not the high. It's sort of a faint buzzing metallic noise. The cd player I use is a Naim CD5x so I don't think the player is unable to show the artifact. I can hear it through my speakers but only very faint. It is most apparent with my headphones (Grado RS1 and AKG K1000), either directly from the cd/SB3 to my headamp or through the speaker amp. I think I have ruled out that the problem stems from other gear, especially since FLACs work good. [slim] measuring energy consumtion Squeezbox and Synology DS107+..
Dear all I measured the energy consuption of my 3 Squeezbox. They all use 5 Watt/H independently if they are on or switched off (with ir-kontroll). The "on" consumtion is quite ok for me, but 5 W for some thing swiched off (standby) is to much in my opinion. Modern DVD or other HiFi use 0.5-1 Watt in Standby By the way, the Synology DS107+ 128 uses 15W (Sleep modus never works) and my 6-Port Switch uses 8 Watt. marlar;222850 Wrote: > Can you say which versions of Dynamic PlayList + SQL Playlist that will > work with 6.3.1, or will I have to use trial-and-error? I you wan't to be completely safe, you need to use the releases that were released at the same time as 6.5.0, I think it was around september 2006. But I supported 6.3 some time after the 6.5 release, so I think the following should work: Dynamic PlayList - I think version 1.12.1 will work SQLPlayList === - 1.10.1 was the last I tested with 6.3 - I would recommend you to try if 1.12 works because the user interface got a lot more user friendly in that release. - The 6.3 support was intentionally removed in 1.18 so release 1.18 and later will definitely not work on 6.3. But you might want to give 1.17 a try. If you use 1.17 you will need at least Dynamic Playlist 1.12. TrackStat = - The last one I tested with 6.3 is TrackStat 1.28.2, but I think 1.29.1 also might work. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and RandomPlayList plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37893 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Upgrade - music folder not recognised?
I thought this might be a problem with various versions of SlimServer and Squeezebox software. I have SlimServer installed on two laptops, they are both now version 6.5.4 and the Squeezebox has firmware version 81. I have been through all the server settings and they are exactly the same on both laptops. Slimserver on the second laptop is behaving fine, will rescan the library no problem. On the first laptop, which I have used to run Slimserver every day with no problems, I an getting "Oops - "\\192.168.1.36\Share\Music" doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try again." The music directory is on a NAS box with a fixed IP, as you can see. I can see this folder manually from the laptop fine by browsing to it. No settings have been changed on the laptop since the setup worked without problem. Erland, I actually installed your Custom Browse yesterday! I saw your other plugins but did not know exactly what to use them for. However, I use Slimserver 6.3.1 because it runs better on my Synology Diskstation than the newer versions. And it took some time to find a version of Custom Browse that worked with it. I found that the latests compatible version is 1.18.2.
