Re: [slim] Interface and Operation: A Dog's Breakfast (Rant)
I agree with erland and Siduhe. A separate branch supporting iTunes tags and look feel of doing things would improve marketability of the SlimServer/Squeezebox system by leveraging off the huge installed base of iTunes libraries. Down here in Australia, Squeezeboxes were only available from two Apple resellers until recently, emphasizing the iTunes link. The only extra I would want is the MusicIP plugin. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. Re: [slim] Radio streams using local Slim Server
This is my understanding. 1. SB will connect directly to source if it can be played natively i.e. MP3, WMA and OGG. The test for this is to start playing a station and then stop slimserver the display will go blank but stream will keep playing. 2.Slimserver can still proxy for MP3 (as in pre 6.5.x) if it is set in Player settings (I think). 3. Other formats can be proxied by disabling built-in in Server Setting/Filetype and forcing transcoding. 4. Non native format - the stream from the radio always terminated in Slimservers which transcodes and then sends transcoding stream to SB. I'm not sure what happens when SBs are synchronised and paying a radio stream - I think SS must proxy but I don't know if it transcodes. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38145 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Single artists in artist list when album artist set
I have several albums (encoded to flac) with the following pattern: Track: Artist: Track01Artist A Track02Artist A Track03Artist A Artist B Track04Artist A Track05Artist A ... To make this album show up as an album for Artist A, I have set ALBUMARTIST to Artist A, and set COMPILATION=0, which works well. However, I also have set the Group compilation albums together to avoid artists with only one or a few songs to clutter the artist list. So I ended up selecting a channel that was outside of my microwave oven's operating range and have been happy ever after: My Microwave oven is running at 2450MHz. This is approximately WiFi channel 8.5 . Turn out I was using channel 7 on my WLAN. It makes sense that I get interference from the microwave becuase the WiFi channels are very wide and actually overlap channels +/- 2 channels away! So then what channel should I use? To answer that question I took my laptop computer and used it as a receiver to measure my neighbors WiFi Channels they are using. I am in ear shot of signals from my neighbors on channels 1, 3, 6 (several folks on Ch 6), and 11. So, I changed my WLAN to channel 4. [slim] Please help me solve a SS .asx streaming problem
Ok, so I got into streaming devices in the first place so I could continue to listen to KEXP in Seattle after I moved away during the tech meltdown. For those that dont know, KEXP was the U of W college station and their comp sci dept helped them to get an uncompressed feed off of the board prior to compression (or even leveling) and it sounds great with live in the studio performances. At the time they launched this it was the first 1.4Mb/s stream feed on the net. So, a few years ago I bought a Roku M500 to replace a usb DAC solution I had cobbled together from a sample dac chip, and I got it to work using SS to transcode the stream. This was when the firmware still worked with SS. Times changed and after a late firmware upgrade to the Roku, I was ready to throw it at a wall, but I still could make it work, I just coulnt use the remote to navigate menus. I bought an SB3, but I couldn't get it to work with the KEXP .asx stream at all, it just kept re-buffering but never made a peep and I gave up. One day fooling around with SS and being generally annoyed at the whole affair, I discovered that if I synched the Roku and the SB3, it worked. Further, if I carefully released the sych, I could shut down the Roku stream after a delay of a few minutes and the SB3 would continue with no problem until I stopped the stream. Bingo, a workaround my wife wouldn't use, but if there was something I really wanted to hear in higher fidelity... So, I got my new Transporter today, and replaced the Roku in my office with the SB3. Do you think I could get the Transporter to work with the .asx stream? NFW. I've determined that I'm just too stupid to figure this all out. Can some of you please help me solve this before I throw the Transporter at the wall? Yes, it sounds great, but I want it to work for what I want to listen to, and this isnt too much to ask. This is the stream address, maybe some of you can make it work and then let me know the deep secret of it all: http://www.kexp.org/audio/kexp-uncomp.asx mms://media-wm.cac.washington.edu/KEXP-uncompressed Generally, the first address invokes a pre-roll message about Realaudio sponsorship which is 64kb/s, then connects to the second address which is 1.4Mb/s. To add insult to injury to lack of support for this in the Transporter, the latest Roku firmware now supports the uncompressed stream natively; so I don't need the 'puter on at all, and thats all I really wanted all along, but of course it sounds nothing like the Transporter.
