It's debatable whether SlimServer is somewhat confused by having both
id3v1 and id3v2 tags in a file, or whether the confusion is with the
user. Many tagging programs make a mash of having both tags, so you
often don't know what's what. Eliminating the id3v1 tag often
eliminates the confusion.

id3v2.4 offers a TSOP 'native' frame, which is the equivalent of FLAC's
'ARTISTSORT'. But I suspect that if that frame is prsent in a id3v2.3
tag, it would work just as well with SlimServer. Even if you don't use
that tag you can use a TXXX tag of 'ARTISTSORT' to accomplish the exact
same thing. Many ways to skin the same cat in SlimServer, which is
nice...

Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Local Radio?

2007-10-17 Thread bpa

I think poor reception is a frequent problem with WiFi devices that have
Radio and do not have an external antenna.

If you look at the Roku forums you'll see there are plenty of users who
complain about the Roku's poor AM performance and who have to attach an
external antenna for FM.

I have the Griffin Shark2 and found without an antenna it gets all the
local FM stations. It is not well documented but you can use an
external antenna with the Shark2 and I use it with my local cable so I
can get BBC stations with FM quality.

IIRC The AM reception is not good but I don't use AM much and it is
possible a long USB cable would enable a better position away from the
various PC related PSUs.

Re: [slim] Buffer fullness

There is a known issue with flac files compressed at more than -5 from
what I remember.

The actual CPU in the SB3 struggles to decode the flac fast enough to
keep the playback buffer full.

It looks and seems like a network issue that's cuasing a buffer
underrun, but you'll notice that the display slows to a crawl.

No, Tiger itself doesn't get past this limit. However, there is
something called the SpeedTools ATA Hi-Cap Support Driver that does
(and doesn't require upgrading the IDE controller). It costs $25. I
use it on my Mac Cube with a 250GB IDE drive and it works fine. If I
remember correctly, it does force you to have two partitions -- so I
have one 20GB partition for the OS & apps, and the rest of the disk for
a data partition for my music files.

[slim] SB3 rebuffering and reset problems

2007-10-17 Thread inca

I have used two SBs on my n/w for years with no problems but my new SB3
(ss6.5.4 f/w 81) is another matter. It constantly resets or stops for
rebuffering.

I know this is not my n/w setup as I have 2 other SBs v1 and v2 running
fine alongside. It happens whether wired or wireless. It happens running
from my internal server so not a broadband or ISP issue. I had assumed
this is a hardware problem but searching the forum I see this is a
recent common problem with SB3.

I am writing this post for two reasons a) to find if anyone has
resolved this issue and b) to assure people that in spite of what they
being told this seems to be a real issue and not something to do with
individual setups etc.

Strange, I've seen this behaviour myself (although it was with surround

I have heard this in relation to the "Flake" FLAC 3rd-party encoder at

I've experienced this myself with 24/96 FLACs with ReplayGain and the

[slim] The Squeezebox finally made it to Fry's

Saw the Logitech branded SB3 at my local Fry's today. Price was still
$299, despite being assembled totally in China. The box was pretty

It was sitting right next to the Roku Soundbridge and the Roku radio.

My prediction was a cheaper SB for the retail outlets. It seems
Logitech is confident they will sell at $299.

With the word of mouth recommendations its been getting for the past
couple of years, they'll probably sell a bunch 'em!

Well it depends on the mac model, but I think on the cube the 128Gb
limit is due to Openfirmware.
If you use an OS not reliyng on Openfirmware routines (like openbsd),
you should be able to use a big drive.
If you really want to use MacOSX, you can try to change Openfirmware
settings :

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fhomepage.mac.com%2Fnand%2Fmacosx%2Fbigdrive.html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

(do this at your own risk, I didn't try it myself :)
