[slim] Still scanning..

2007-11-08 Thread sand

Hi all,

I initiated a rescan yesterday, since I've edited some tags with Mp3tag
and SlimServer still says its scanning, after I left it overnight
(approx 5000 songs). It used to take only a couple of minutes..?!

"Note: SlimServer is still scanning your music library, so some items
may not appear in this area yet."
What could be the problem?

Is there a log or something so that I can see what it's doing?
Thank's in advance for any help!

You'll also need to find a bitrate that the cable connection can
support. I'd be amazed if it can do 320 kbps mp3. I have Comcast
cable with 768 kbps upload speed and even it couldn't handle streaming
much above 192 kbps reliably. Go to player setting for your work
connection Audio > Bitrate Limit and fiddle with the streaming rate
until it's reliable. To increase the audio quality, set the LAME
quality level higher than the default 9 if your server can handle it.
I think I used 1 or 2 and my P4 3.0Ghz server had no problems.

I always had flakey problems with SoftSqueeze (don't use it much any
more). Time to start rebooting stuff, particularly at the client
machine. Reboot your work PC. Reboot your SlimServer. Even reboot

Re: [slim] Quick question

Yep, well said Peejay.
Also you can use softsqueeze to familiarize with the interface of
squeezebox once you have Slimserver installed.
I use a Thecus N5200 Nas for running SlimServer and it is fine. It has
the nice advantage of keeping my data (not only music) safe by raid5.
;)
And despite from the fact that I have installed five hard drives it
doesn't consume too much power. There are cheaper nas solutions running
SlimServer out there however.

Re: [slim] Puzzled At Work

2007-11-08 Thread Mike Meyer

Thanks for the reply Jim.

Yes, I have changed the IP address in Softsqueeze and that connects
fine. So does Moose. I have also changed the port forwarding on my
router too so that is set up OK. It's just weird that certain things
are connecting fine but others don't. I also can't even ping my new
external IP address from work. So I'm not sure how I'm even getting
Softsqueeze to connect in order to play the internet radio stations.

Working:
Softsqueeze connects, plays internet radio.
Moose

Not working:
Softsqueeze won't play music from my library
Can't bring up slimserver in browser
Can't ping home IP address

I was thinking that maybe a port was blocked but ping doesn't hit a
specific port. What would be the difference between playing a file and
playing an internet station? I'm puzzled.

The 3000kBps network test should cover this sample rate
adequately...unless you have short bursts of interference which cause
signal drop-outs completely. Do other flacs play OK? Try monitoring the
SB3 buffer fullness over a period of time when you hear the drop-outs to
determine if it is a network issue.

Have you run the network test on the Squeezebox? Slimserver will tell
you at what bit rate it is streaming the the FLAC files in question.
There is a guide to what test you should run for flac files here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkProblemsSecondGuide
As the streaming bit rate for 96KHz 24 bit flacs is significantly more
than double that of 44.1KHz 16 bit, which I suspect is what the
documentation assumes, I would suggest the 4000 or 5000 kbps test needs
to report a good result.

Good points!

I have both ports open in my router and it seems pretty clear than 9000
is open at work since I can get to my server with http:\\local_IP:9000
but I'm not so sure about 3483. Is there any program or command line
utility that I can run at work to confirm if a port is open? In any
case Softsqueeze still isn't working. Back to the drawing board
tomorrow.

I hadn't considered my upload speed. My cable upload is a measly 384
kb/s so I guess I better stick with mp3 for now. I installed the latest
Lame encoder and everything seems to be working but the proof will be if
it works remotely tomorrow.

I'm still going to try to troubleshoot Softsqueeze too.

Re: [slim] Quick question

2007-11-08 Thread peejay

The Squeezebox always needs a server of some description to stream music
to it. Squeezenetwork is an internet hosted service by Slimdevices and
is a server which, among other things, acts as a gateway for other
public music streaming services, some free, some not. See Rhapsody.com
as an example of this.
You will need your own server (your home PC will probably do if it has
enough spare hard disk space and above minimum specifications) if you
wish to listen to your own music. You will need to copy your Music to
the hard disk from CD using a 'ripping' program, and install the server
software (currently called Slimserver - free download) from Slim
Devices. There's plenty of good documentation on how to do this, and
it's a good idea to install Slimserver first and familiarise yourself
with it while waiting for your Squeezebox to arriveYou'll find
plenty of help here as well if you run into difficulties or want to do
something which isn't 'out of the box'.

Hi,
depends what you wanna do really. The SB3 is capable to use
squeezenetwork without a server. That means it plays radio streams of
all sorts a kints really.
If you want to archive your music from cds to a server and listen to
them with just some clicks on the remote you need a server running. You
might be able to wake it on lan though.

[slim] Windows Home Server for SlimServer?

For some reason the mouse point disappears when I mouse over the player
though and I can't tell what buttons I'm hitting. I managed to find the
preferences and entered my local_IP (just xx.xx.xx.xx and not
xx.xx.xx.xx:9000, right?) Now it been on 'Please wait. Connecting to

At least when the prefence dialog box is open I can see the mouse

[slim] Flac Remote Access

2007-11-08 Thread Donzi

I think I'm this >< close to getting remote access of my flac files
working from my home server to my work computer. There's just one last
thing I seem to be missing. Here's what I have so far. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

I have my router set up to forward ports 9000 and 3483. I know my
outside world local IP (which isn't static, so I'll need to keep up
with it when it changes) and my work IP (which is static). I don't have
SSH or any other security set up yet but will do that once I get things
working. I was hoping to keep it simple at first and then add
complexity once the basics are working.

Anyway, I can enter http:\\local_IP:9000 into a browser at work and
have access to the server so the ports are OK, right? I couldn't find
any forum posts or FAQs that mentioned the need to change any other
server settings.

My player of choice is Winamp 5.5 since it installs without admin
privileges on my corporate pc. I tried softsqueeze but had issues - the
mouse pointer would disappear when I moused over the player rendering it
unusable. Might be a java issue but I can't update java due to lack of
admin privileges.

I tried Winamp with both an mp3 file and a flac file and it plays
properly through the pc. The flac files play fine off the server
locally with my SB3.

My problem comes in trying to play the stream from the server. I
entered http://local_IP:9000/stream.mp3 into the "open URL" dialog box
accessed from the Winamp File menu. Is that the right place to enter
it?

I can remotely queue up a flac file on the server. What next? Do I hit
play on the right side of the server window? The play button seems
greyed out and 'Now stopped on 1 of 1' is displayed. BTW I'm using the
fishbone skin. I can see my work IP address in the box on the right
side of the server window. It doesn't give any indication that it's
actually playing anything though. Any special trick to get it to play
remotely?

Do I have to hit play on Winamp also or will it stream automatically?
It tries connecting but then times out.

I don't have LAME installed because I want to stream the lossless flac
files. Is that a problem? Is it safe to assume that since I can control
my server remotely I should be able to receive the streamed music and
that my ports/firewall/etc are not a problem?

What am I missing?

Thanks, Don

Have you changed the IP address in the Softsqueeze setup to the new
one? Unless you're using some kind of dynamic DNS system that can pick
up the IP address change, then you must be connecting directly by the IP
address of your router.

Also, is your router redirecting the outside IP address to the internal
IP address of your SlimSerer? If so, check the router's configuration
and see if there's a rule in there somewhere that specifically
contained the old IP address.

> Is there a way to go back to my old IP address that was working?

Not likely. If it's a home connection, then it's assigned dynamically
by your ISP via DHCP. Someone else probably has your old IP address
right now.

Yes, you can install an OS and slimserver. I think what most people do
is temporarily install the HDD in another computer, load the OS and
necessary software like sshd, samba, etc., and then physically transfer
the HDD to the Kurobox enclosure. The OS is typically a stripped down
version of debian linux, but there are others that some people use.

Hi Len

I just allowed all these to have inbound access. MySQLd I think is the
database that holds all the track info and playlists. The SB needs to
talk to this database in order to fill up the buffer and play what you
want it to play.

Perl kicks in when the library is scanned for new music. It probably
does all sorts of other stuff too.

MDNSResponder is the stuff that enables the Bonjour networking to see
your SB over the network so that you can access the server from another
computer eg a laptop without having to type in an ip address
localhost:9000.

So in short I think you'll need them all.

[slim] Puzzled At Work

2007-11-08 Thread Mike Meyer

I've been able to listen to my music from work up until a couple weeks
ago. At that point I swapped out routers for a day and then put the
old one back. The external IP address is now different than it was
before so maybe my work is blocking a certain IP range??? I can still
connect via softsqueeze and listen to internet radio stations but as
soon as I play one of my own files it just sits there, no sound, song
doesn't appear to start. It actually posts the song to Last.fm so it
must think it's doing something.

I can't bring up slimserver in the browser anymore either so maybe port
9000 is blocked? Moose and softsqueeze still connect fine.

Is there a way to go back to my old IP address that was working?

Thanks for any ideas!!

Yea - I've rebooted, unplugged, etc.

I'm going to try to reflash and clear the memory. Those are only the
computers that are on 24/7. You should see the traffic later today!

[slim] Cue Sheet Problems

2007-11-08 Thread miklorsmith

I've been using Exact Audio Copy to create continuous .wav files with
.cue cutters for years. This works great but the last Slimserver build
that works flawlessly is 6.3.1, including the beta 7.0.

The problem has varied over time, currently the track numbers are
available through the computer interface but not through the SB itself.
Choosing that directory reveals "Empty" for contents instead of track
information.

I've searched the FAQ and don't find an answer here. What's the magic?

Re: [slim] Wireless experts out there? I need help

2007-11-08 Thread Squid

Have you tried unplugging the router for a few minutes ? Maybe it was
running hot and got unstable ? I've seen weirder problems than yours,
where the solution was simply a reboot or power-off/cooldown.
If your router is really broken, I would just look for another 54GL.
They are excellent boxes, especially with all the great firmware you
find on the web (I have two running dd-wrt) and you already will be
familiar with them and be able to set them up in no time.

PS: that's quite some wireless activity in your neighborhood. BTW, I
would use channel 1 (if you're not already using it). Not only are
there only two others using it as well, but it is also supposed to give
least interference with other wireless devices such as phones.

[slim] Wireless experts out there? I need help

2007-11-08 Thread MUCHO

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot.

I have a Linksys 54GL flashed with Hyperwrt Firmware Version: v4.71.1,
Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c. I have the transmit power turned up to 67
mW which I've read is a safe range. I have the extended range antenna.
I'm using WPA security. It is about 1.5 years old.

The last couple weeks the signal has gotten flaky. I can't count of
keeping a signal anymore. It used to work solid with signal glitches
being rare. Now, they happen on a very fequent basis. How can I tell if
my router is dying?

I have a huge number of signals in the area competing - I've read
channels 1 6 and 11 are the only ones to use and all three have strong
signals. I've attached a scan of the surrounding traffic.

I'm not opposed to buying a new router but I don't want to waste money
if I don't need to.

If I do buy a router - please suggest one for me.

[slim] Mac 10.5 Firewall ports

2007-11-08 Thread justlen

Hello;

I am running 10.5, and the new application based firewall is set to
"Set access for specific services and applications". When I started the
Slim Server it asked me if I wanted to allow inbound access for:

mysqld
perl
mDNSResponderPosix

Which one of these needs inbound access for my Squeezeboxes to access
the server? I'd like to keep my open connections as minimal as
possible.

Thanks;

Len

Re: [slim] Can I use spare disk for NAS and run SS?

2007-11-08 Thread aubuti

Check out a Kurbobox (www.kurobox.com). They are basically the same
thing as the Buffalo line of NASs, but ship without hard disks, so it
sounds perfect for your needs. I store my music library (+ other
backups) and run slimserver on a Buffalo LinkStation and it works fine.
And it would have been easier if I had gone the Kurobox route, because
then I wouldn't have had to re-flash the firmware.

[slim] Can I use spare disk for NAS and run SS?

2007-11-08 Thread Xorro

Hi all,

I have a spare (and brand new) 250gb disk. I'd like to be able to make
this into a NAS device and use it to run slimserver.

I am running Vista on my home PC and if often goes to sleep and will
not wake on network ping from the squeezebox, having a NAS would allow
me to use the Squeezebox without turning the PC.

Has anyone done this, or can anyone tell me how I can achieve this?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] not finding all my songs

2007-11-08 Thread rodlogic

I agree that this is still an issue - appears that if the tag is
incorrect SS ignores it. I went thru and exercise using mp3tag to clean
up all the tags - I first converted tag to file name - then deleted the
tags then did convert filename to tag - this ended with all my tags
being id3.2 (id3v2.4 utf 8) which sorted the problem - and I do this
will all new tracks - a pita but it don't have missing tracks.
Also those tags which are APE also seems to cause hiccups - thus I take
the above approach !
