[slim] SB3 IR remote codes
My (overly complex) hi-fi system (many components) is controlled by a touch-screen PC, so that no matter what device is the current source (or recorder, or signal processor), a single remote control (or screen button touch) will send out the appropriate IR code burst to control that device. Now that I have an SB3 as my main music source, I need to integrate its IR codes into my touch-PC's control program. I've measured the IR pulse-train widths, and now need to capture all the key-codes sent by the SB3 remote. Because these 32-bit codes have a 'double' start bit, I'd need to reprogram my touch PC to handle the unusual serial format in its 'universal' IR receiver, which would then display the hex codes as I press each button. Maybe someone can save me this extra programming by pointing me to a source (table) of the 32-bit codes sent by each key? It's usually for strategic markets - not something as fragmented as streaming audio products. Pre-announcing for Slimdevices would simply slow sales, which doesn't benefit them at all...unless it's a completely new category of product, perhaps. I also found the comment on Cisco dropping from favor funny...it was actually a great earnings announcement and growth projections were reasonable. [slim] Mac Mini - going to sleep
I've just sorted out a Mac Mini to use as my slimserver music server which I want switched on 24/7 (rather than use my main PC which is noisy and power hungry). Everything has gone ok and it is now serving my two SB3's perfectly as I type this. However, it seems to go into some sort of sleep mode if left inactive for any length of time (I don't have any mouse, keyboard or monitor plugged in) and I have to use the power button on the back of it to wake it up. Once I press this it comes back to life and my SB3's can then find slimserver almost straight away. Is it possible to stop this 'sleep mode' so that it stays on permanently. I'll admit that many large companies pre-announce for strategic and tactical purposes. Sometimes to spread FUD, sometimes to tell their loyal customers not to jump to Brand X now, because in six months they will have something just as good. I haven't followed Logitech enough to know whether they do or do not. Intel annoucing faster, better, cooler chips coming RSN is not the same as normal product vendors pre-announcing. Deadlines often aren't nearly as important as keeping interest in a company's products. Slim Devices past reluctance to pre-announce products isn't hard to understand when they're putting out about one device a year. A small company can indeed shoot itself in the foot. But I wouldn't be at all surprised to see that change now that they're strapped with producing consumer products for a behemoth like Logitech. Haunyack, what are you trying to say? Is it like, "We don't need no stinking badges!" but instead, "We don't need no sticking audiophile opinions!" But you do make a great point. What company wants a bunch of audiophiles telling their buying public that they modified this and that. Might make the new buyers wonder if they bought something bad that needs redesigned by the owner before it is useable (which isn't the case). The Squeezebox 3 is great, personally I just like to tinker and "Squeeze" a little more performance out of it at the same time. New buyers, notice I said a little more performance. The SB3 is very good and there are no huge gains to be had just from swapping parts directly. Besides there is always the Transporter and SB+ if the SB3 is not enough. Re: [slim] ogg playback occcasionally stops
Strangely enough, I've never had this problem with Ogg playback and my whole collection is encoded with a non-Xiph encoder (aoTuV). I think it actually has more to do with bitrate than whether an encoder is standard or not. Ogg bitrates can fluctuate quite a bit within a single track, and I imagine there's an upper limit to what the encoder can handle. The best solution in the long run may be to do your own ABX testing, and determine the bitrate where Ogg reaches transparency for you. If you haven't done this, then you're likely to encode your music to a needlessly high bitrate, which will overtax your SB3 and waste disk space. Until then, you can disable the built-in Ogg decoding and set SlimServer to transcode to FLAC. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39829 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

SnarlyDwarf: ah yes, I think I begin to see your point. I've just downloaded Tag&Rename (3.3.5) on trial and I can now see the Lyrics tag. And yes, it's very useful, especially as this tag remains 'fixed' to the main flac file. That's certainly half the problem solved. Now all I need is a Slimserver skin that allows you to show the Lyric tag. -- Cape11 Cape11's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40186 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SlimServer not finding files on NAS
I am running SlimServer on a Dell laptop and pulling music files from a local NAS (Buffalo Linkstation). The Dell plays the music just fine through iTunes, but even after rescanning the library several times, SlimServer keeps telling me my music library contains 0 albums, 0 songs by 0 artists. I went into "Server Settings" and selected "Use iTunes". No change. I went into "Server Settings", and under "Music Folder", I entered the network location for the files, but I get this error: "Oops - 'Z:\MyMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music' doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try again." This is the most frustrating since I am entering the exact address that I used when I directed iTunes to pull files from the NAS (under iTunes Preferences > Advanced). I am done troubleshooting! Any ideas?? I looked at digital picture frames, but I don't think I've seen anything that would fit in a networked home. It might be a good Logitech/SD project, but I don't think it would be a good idea to use slimserver for it. Re: [slim] Socketwrapper Problem no mplayer --> m4a audio
I tried deleting the access rules for slim.exe mplayer.exe and socketwrapper, and recreating them. I also tried again with ZA on and off and I always get the same error. Can you help me trace the faulty source using the command prompt? If I use mplayer with command prompt, "mplayer c:\path\file.m4a" it play no problem. What would be the command line to test the socketwrapper?? Thanks for your help bpa or any other knowledgeable soul. -- Yayita Yayita's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9791 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40150 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Active Speakers
Hi I'm trying out using a SB3 plugged into some computer type active speakers as an alarm clock. The problem I'm having is that the speakers need to be left powered on all night so that they work when the SB3 wakes up. Unfortunately they hum a little and I don't like to be wasteful with the power. Anyone know of any active speakers that can be left in a kind of standby state and then automatically turn on by detecting the presence of an audio signal on their inputs? I'm looking at the cheaper/smaller end of the market - under £100 and as small as possible. cheers -- Stoker --ian Stoker's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8264 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40213 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] ogg playback occcasionally stops
dear fellow ogg-user, i fear i may have to confirm that using *non-reference* (as in: not released by xiph.org) vorbis encoders can cause playback problems. i generally use SJeng's OggEncGTune3b1 encoder, which i find to have superior sound quality at *high* bitrates. unfortunately, that encoder has allowed the bitrate so soar to ~500-600 kbits peak on some of my tracks and to ~350 kbits average. these tracks cause my SB3 to choke. (reproduceable) my solution: re-code those tracks in FLAC (since at that bitrate flac is not really that much larger) and/or turn off the visualization screensavers. seriously, it seems my SB3 was just running out of CPU cycles! and vorbis is *very* CPU-intensive... luckily, only about 5 of my 3000 tracks seem to be affected, so i dont worry too much. as you said: other tracks sound fantastic! and after all - its my fault. (not using the reference encoder ;-) -- dcote dcote's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39829 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Single FLAC, mulitple tracks genre vorbis tags
Thanks gharris999. However, I'd really like to figure out what the appropriate tags are for genre. Using embedded cue sheets will be my last resort. Have you tried the version 0.7 windows squeezeslave binary? It plays flac files served from Slimserver without a hitch. -- ralphy ralphy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3484 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40154 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
