[slim] SB3 IR remote codes

2007-11-13 Thread DanielTheGreat

My (overly complex) hi-fi system (many components) is controlled by a
touch-screen PC, so that no matter what device is the current source
(or recorder, or signal processor), a single remote control (or screen
button touch) will send out the appropriate IR code burst to control
that device. Now that I have an SB3 as my main music source, I need to
integrate its IR codes into my touch-PC's control program.
I've measured the IR pulse-train widths, and now need to capture all
the key-codes sent by the SB3 remote. Because these 32-bit codes have
a 'double' start bit, I'd need to reprogram my touch PC to handle the
unusual serial format in its 'universal' IR receiver, which would then
display the hex codes as I press each button.
Maybe someone can save me this extra programming by pointing me to a
source (table) of the 32-bit codes sent by each key?
Thanks, Daniel

Re: [slim] SlimServer Ubuntu port 9000

I had exactly the same problem today while replacing my ancient RedHat
5.x slimserver with a new Ubuntu build.

Edit /etc/default/slimserver and comment out the HTTP_ADDR line. Then
cd to the /etc/rc2.d directory and type:
./S20slimserver restart
to restart the server.

I brought this up in one of the many threads discussing what people want
from future products.

Basically, what i want is a SqueezeBox with a 7" version of the Jive

Being able to read canon RAW files would be awsome too ;)

I just returned my 5.8 digital phone to Best Buy for the same reason:
it sounded liked crap. They did happen to have a 900 analog at Best
Buy which sounds MUCH better. It's ugly, and looks like it was built
in 1985, but it sounds clean.
If you're in the US, check Best Buy.

As Pat mentioned, pre-announcing is usually to stall other company's
sales. It's usually for strategic markets - not something as
fragmented as streaming audio products. Pre-announcing for Slimdevices
would simply slow sales, which doesn't benefit them at all...unless it's
a completely new category of product, perhaps.

I also found the comment on Cisco dropping from favor funny...it was
actually a great earnings announcement and growth projections were
reasonable. I'd think leading internet infrastructure sales is a
decent place to be as HD video is moving toward IP delivery. Perhaps a
time to buy...

Back on topic - I look forward to both SC7 and a better remote solution
as well.

I can reproduce this problem - VERY interimently - being connected to
SqueezeNetwork directly rather than to slimserver. This would lead me
to suspect that this is a firmware issue rather than a slimserver
issue.

There are no wireless networks around me. No wireless phones being used
close by. When I am connected to Squeezenetwork my computer is
completely turned off.

When the squeezebox stops, if I press play again, the music will
resume.

My wireless strength runs at 80% or better virtually all the time - as
in I have never seen it lower than 80%.

[slim] Mac Mini - going to sleep

2007-11-13 Thread unclepuncle

I've just sorted out a Mac Mini to use as my slimserver music server
which I want switched on 24/7 (rather than use my main PC which is
noisy and power hungry).

Everything has gone ok and it is now serving my two SB3's perfectly as
I type this.

However, it seems to go into some sort of sleep mode if left inactive
for any length of time (I don't have any mouse, keyboard or monitor
plugged in) and I have to use the power button on the back of it to
wake it up. Once I press this it comes back to life and my SB3's can
then find slimserver almost straight away.

Is it possible to stop this 'sleep mode' so that it stays on
permanently. I've never used a Mac before this arrived yesterday so
excuse my ignorance.

Given Cisco's recent financial announcements, they may fall out of my
"smart company" list.

I'll admit that many large companies pre-announce for strategic and
tactical purposes. Sometimes to spread FUD, sometimes to tell their
loyal customers not to jump to Brand X now, because in six months they
will have something just as good.

I haven't followed Logitech enough to know whether they do or do not.

Intel annoucing faster, better, cooler chips coming RSN is not the same
as normal product vendors pre-announcing. The Osbourne effect is real,
sales are lost when customers wait for the really great next thing
rather than buying what is on the shelf today.

I will not be holding my breath for any pre-announcements from Sean and Dean

It happens every day, and by many very successful companies.
Particularly in the tech and consumer electronics industries. You've
never seen Cisco announce an new line of routers six months before
they're physically available? Never seen speakers or audio components
at consumer electronics shows well before they're available in audio
dealer showrooms? Deadlines often aren't nearly as important as
keeping interest in a company's products.

Slim Devices past reluctance to pre-announce products isn't hard to
understand when they're putting out about one device a year. A small
company can indeed shoot itself in the foot. But I wouldn't be at all
surprised to see that change now that they're strapped with producing
consumer products for a behemoth like Logitech. It's essential that
they have all the mechanisms in place where a company can know that
they will be able to get X, Y or Z out the door by a certain date. I
suspect that they're nowhere near that point yet, but as a new division
in a company that does it routinely, you can be certain it's a goal.

Haunyack, what are you trying to say? Is it like, "We don't need no
stinking badges!" but instead, "We don't need no sticking audiophile
opinions!"

But you do make a great point. What company wants a bunch of
audiophiles telling their buying public that they modified this and
that. Might make the new buyers wonder if they bought something bad
that needs redesigned by the owner before it is useable (which isn't
the case).

The Squeezebox 3 is great, personally I just like to tinker and
"Squeeze" a little more performance out of it at the same time. New
buyers, notice I said a little more performance. The SB3 is very good
and there are no huge gains to be had just from swapping parts
directly. Besides there is always the Transporter and SB+ if the SB3 is
not enough. Not to bad mouth Boulder, but I do not understand where they
fit in. For what their mods cost on the SB3, I could buy a TP or SB+ and
move the unmodified SB3 to the kitchen or bedroom. Anyway, just MHO.

SC7 will be soon. There was talk of releasing it in November but
fortunately the development team seems more interested in getting
things working properly rather than slavishly obeying some prearranged

Is there any news out there about how long i will have to wait to see

Re: [slim] ogg playback occcasionally stops

2007-11-13 Thread CatBus

Strangely enough, I've never had this problem with Ogg playback and my
whole collection is encoded with a non-Xiph encoder (aoTuV).

I think it actually has more to do with bitrate than whether an encoder
is standard or not. Ogg bitrates can fluctuate quite a bit within a
single track, and I imagine there's an upper limit to what the encoder
can handle.

The best solution in the long run may be to do your own ABX testing,
and determine the bitrate where Ogg reaches transparency for you. If
you haven't done this, then you're likely to encode your music to a
needlessly high bitrate, which will overtax your SB3 and waste disk
space.

Until then, you can disable the built-in Ogg decoding and set
SlimServer to transcode to FLAC.

using a company's website that you can just click the correct part of
the display without looking, then one day you end up someplace you have
never seen before! Damn webmaster went and updated the site. The company
probably likes that because you are seeing other things they want you to
see.

BTW, are we still Audiophiles if we can't find the Forum? And if an
Audiophile falls in the forest is it digital or analog?

What kind of speakers do you have now?

I use a T-Amp and normal speakers (definitive pro cinema monitors) for
my alarm clock setup. I don't have any audible hum or hiss with my
setup. I keep the T-Amp at about 1/3 volume, and the squeezebox is set
to play at 35 for the alarm playlist.

I had a pair of cheap altec lansing PC speakers that had a very audible
hiss even when the switch was "off". I eventually just gave them away
because the sound was awful.

You may want to check out the Audio Engine 2 speakers for an alarm
clock setup.

Re: [slim] Socketwrapper Problem no mplayer --> m4a audio

2007-11-13 Thread bpa

1. Open a command prompt window
2. make Window wide and long (e.g.200x9000 lines) through "C>" icon
menu at top LHS of window
3. at command prompt change (use cd command) to SC directory.
4. run SC with the command "slim.exe" (I think)
5. Set the logging flag "player.source" to Info through web interface
Server Settings/Advanced/Logging. Don't forget to "save settings"
6. Try to play a track - debug messages should appear in the command
prompt window including socketwrapper and mplayer debug messages.
7. Copy log messages to a file (again through "C>" icon menu) , save as
a txt file, zip it and attach to a post.

Re: [slim] 5.8 GHz cordless phone interrupts internet radio

2007-11-13 Thread Pale Blue Ego

Does the voice line have a filter on it? Most DSL installations require
a filter on the voice lines.

Also, you might want to return the 5.8 GHz system and go for one of the
newer DECT 6.0 phone systems, which use the 1.9 GHZ spectrum and are
lots more immune to interference.

The Panasonic KX-TG1032 is a DECT 6.0 system with 2 handsets. It's
also available in 3, 4, and 5 handset packs.

Fishbone and Default do.

You can even use Advanced Search to search lyrics.

[slim] SlimServer not finding files on NAS

2007-11-13 Thread Omeriah

I am running SlimServer on a Dell laptop and pulling music files from a
local NAS (Buffalo Linkstation). The Dell plays the music just fine
through iTunes, but even after rescanning the library several times,
SlimServer keeps telling me my music library contains 0 albums, 0 songs
by 0 artists.

I went into "Server Settings" and selected "Use iTunes". No change.

I went into "Server Settings", and under "Music Folder", I entered the
network location for the files, but I get this error:

"Oops - 'Z:\MyMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music' doesn't seem to be a valid
directory. Try again."

This is the most frustrating since I am entering the exact address that
I used when I directed iTunes to pull files from the NAS (under iTunes
Preferences > Advanced).

I am done troubleshooting! Any ideas??

Thanks, Andrew

I think you have a point. I looked at digital picture frames, but I
don't think I've seen anything that would fit in a networked home. It
might be a good Logitech/SD project, but I don't think it would be a
good idea to use slimserver for it.

Re: [slim] Socketwrapper Problem no mplayer --> m4a audio

2007-11-13 Thread Yayita

I tried deleting the access rules for slim.exe mplayer.exe and
socketwrapper, and recreating them. I also tried again with ZA on and
off and I always get the same error.

Can you help me trace the faulty source using the command prompt?

If I use mplayer with command prompt, "mplayer c:\path\file.m4a" it
play no problem. What would be the command line to test the
socketwrapper??

Thanks for your help bpa or any other knowledgeable soul.

[slim] Active Speakers

2007-11-13 Thread Stoker

Hi

I'm trying out using a SB3 plugged into some computer type active
speakers as an alarm clock.

The problem I'm having is that the speakers need to be left powered on
all night so that they work when the SB3 wakes up. Unfortunately they
hum a little and I don't like to be wasteful with the power.

Anyone know of any active speakers that can be left in a kind of
standby state and then automatically turn on by detecting the presence
of an audio signal on their inputs? I'm looking at the cheaper/smaller
end of the market - under £100 and as small as possible.

cheers

Re: [slim] ogg playback occcasionally stops

2007-11-13 Thread dcote

dear fellow ogg-user,

i fear i may have to confirm that using *non-reference* (as in: not
released by xiph.org) vorbis encoders can cause playback problems.

i generally use SJeng's OggEncGTune3b1 encoder, which i find to have
superior sound quality at *high* bitrates.
unfortunately, that encoder has allowed the bitrate so soar to ~500-600
kbits peak on some of my tracks and to ~350 kbits average.
these tracks cause my SB3 to choke. (reproduceable)

my solution: re-code those tracks in FLAC (since at that bitrate flac
is not really that much larger) and/or turn off the visualization
screensavers. seriously, it seems my SB3 was just running out of CPU
cycles! and vorbis is *very* CPU-intensive...

luckily, only about 5 of my 3000 tracks seem to be affected, so i dont
worry too much. as you said: other tracks sound fantastic!

and after all - its my fault. (not using the reference encoder ;-)

2007-11-13 Thread ralphy

Thanks gharris999.

However, I'd really like to figure out what the appropriate tags are
for genre. Using embedded cue sheets will be my last resort.

Have you tried the version 0.7 windows squeezeslave binary? It plays
flac files served from Slimserver without a hitch.
