Question: Which Random Mix do you use most often?

- Random songs
- Random artists
- Random albums
- Random years
- No preference, I use several more or less equally

Songs for me, with genre like classical, opera, choral, soundtrack
excluded. My conclusion is that I own an awful lot of music that I've
a) forgotten about or b) have never listened to!

What do you mean by false results? Do you get results, but they're
incorrect?

Does the system hang permanently? Does SC crash? Or does it just take an
awful long time to return?

If you are using SC and still having problems with Rhapsody, you will
need to download tonight's 7.1 nightly build, or listen on
SqueezeNetwork.

I use songs, with the preference to show 30 upcoming and 3 previously
played on the Controller (set in the web interface).

When I'm in random mood it's usually with rock, hard rock, folk rock
etc, so with ten genres selected a lot of 'skips' end up in there.
Having a large number of upcoming tracks showing lets you remove them
well in advance, and makes for some interesting playlists if you just
keep songs that go along with the theme, or somehow lead into the next.
E.g. Ween, How High Can You Fly->Pink Floyd, Pigs On The Wing-> NIN,
March Of The Pigs->The Beatles, Piggies-> Ween, Big Fat F***.

Look into http://www.privoxy.org/

I use it to stream to an Onkyo unit in my basement from the
Squeezecenter interface.
It's also very useful as a filter (formerly "Junkbuster" ) for regular
http browsing.

Cheers!

Re: [slim] Rhpasody not playing

2008-07-23 Thread ajkidle

Okay, this is a little weird, but maybe another piece of the puzzle will
help solve this.

I normally set the "music source" for my duet to be the computer that I
have all of my ripped music on. I'm running SqueezeCenter on this
computer. Everything has been working fine. Until now when Rhapsody
stopped working. But if I connect to the SqueezeNetwork as my music
source, Rhapsody works fine. But of course then I can't get to my
ripped music library on my computer, so this is an annoying long term
solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: [slim] bye squeeze, hello ipod

2008-07-23 Thread jharo

Ok, I am long time SB owner/lover and the new remote and my existing
AppleTV will NOT be replacing my SB... yet.

I have a friend who i have been trying to get to retire his Audiotron
(my last true love) and upgrade to SB. But now, he is very intersted
in iphone airport express solution.

The iphone remote is truly fantastic, its extremely fast, simple, you
would think you were just using your ipod.

BUT - (showstopper) the only real issue i think is that, unlike using
your ipod, you have no way to make a playlist "on-the-go". I can
browse my existing playlists, all of my music, play an individual song,
etc, but I can't sit there and queue up songs (or then edit my queue)
etc.

(BUT ++) Negative on the SB: my music server crashes all the time.
Slimserver.exe is at the center of the crash logs, but i DO not blame
slim. I'm sure i have some bad RAM or something in that P.O.S. server
and i dont want to spend the time or money to 'fix' it. Sadly my
server goes down every 5 days or sofor the past year and then music is
down. Hard reboot brings it back... but wife blames the SB and then
starts to blame me.

BUT... i love Last.fm, i dont want to lose that feature. Its not
impossible for AppleTV to partner as someone said (they do it with
Flickr and Youtube), but I would not hold my breath.

I THINK - where I sit now is that I'm going to go upstairs and reboot
my server again, install the latest IPENG skin - AND - put the RCA
output of my apple TV into my whole house audio system, so i can get
optical to the reciever (as it does now) and RCA to the multi-zone
whole house.

This way, if i dont care about a queue and i just want to play
something fast and easy... iphone will rock it.

My HSDPA modem connection is shared through my wireless router to All

One critical step is to set static IP on the rest of the PCs,

Mortslim, did you notice that whenever you navigate to a text entry

Any place that requires text entry, searching YouTube, Movies, music,

No delays, in fact, iphone remote seems to less delay than my Logitech

Itunes keeps all of the artwork in a separate folder from the
individual
music files and that is why it is not showing up on your controller.

If you search for coverscout in this forum,a very nice individual
provides a free demo for coverscout which will copy all itunes artwork
to the music files

this demo only works with mac computers and you dont make it clear if
you use a windows or mac computer

[slim] SBC Search hangs SC, SBR, SB, Transporter

2008-07-23 Thread networker

Hi Developer and Slim Device User,

I use a Receiver+Controller (Duet), SB3 and a Transporter with latest
SC 7.1 (The Problem occurs also on previous versions) on a Win XP SP2.

With SB3 and Transporter there where no problems to search on Title in
a round 80. Title Music Library (MP3/AIF).

When I first include the SBC to the network of other "SB's" it was
normaly included into the system and raw functionality was ok.

The problem starts when I start a title search with SBC eg. "who" which
returned many entries. (For SC, SB3 and Transporter the same search does
not make any problem)

I also tried different new versions of SC and updating SBC, but same
false results. With this or other searches with huge search results it
hangs all devices including SC on the XP.

Is there any limitation of library size for SBC when making a search?

Thanks for your help !

Protocols of SBC messages after searching (which hangs SBC, SBR,
Tranporter and SC):

[slim] Where has "No sync" gone?

2008-07-23 Thread DanielTheGreat

I have 3 SB3s, and regularly run one synchronised with SqueezeSlave
(yeah, I know the performance sucks, but what can I do? - just have to
wait till someone writes some decent software!). Sometimes I get a
second SB3 to join this sync group.
But when I want that second SB3 to LEAVE the sync group, there's no "No
synchronisation" option in the SB3's menu! I have to go to the server
and de-sync it using the SqueezeCenter menu.
I'm sure "No synchronisation" used to be available from the SB3 itself.
What's happened to it?

[slim] What does the + button do?

2008-07-23 Thread park

I've had a Duet for a couple of months now and have mostly just used it
in random mode. Today, I decided to stretch my boundaries a bit and add
a song to a playlist. Actually I wanted to zap a song I came across that
had some digital noise. I press and hold the + button and nothing
happens. If I quick press the + button... nothing happens. I found the
Factory test for the keypad and all keys check out OK. I do have a
zapped playlist that I added a couple songs to from the web interface.
So, how do you get the + button to do anything?

Re: [slim] Remote streaming

2008-07-23 Thread captain_tinker

I am able to get to the squeezecenter web page external to my network,
after having opened the 9000 port on my router and directing it at my
SC machine. I am even able to admin it remotely, but I have never been
able to stream external to my network. It works fine inside my network,
by softsqueeze, by Winamp, etc, but getting it to go outside the router
it just doesn't work. I cannot connect, and I never get the drop down
in the web page to show another player. The closest I have come is
putting the url with the stream.mp3 at the end into a web browser, as
if I were going to download the mp3 itself, and it did put the drop
down in the list, with the name of the browser, and an IP address, but
obviously it was not streaming anything, as the browser just thought it
was trying to download a file. But I cannot get Winamp to stream it, or
anything else. Not even softsqueeze will pick it up, it will just sit
there and look at me, trying to connect.

I looked for this settings/players/audio/proxy that was mentioned in
a previous post, but could not find anything other than setting up a
proxy for the server to attach to under Squeezecenter
settings/network/proxy. I am assuming for the other to work properly,
you probably have to actually be able to connect with a remote
streaming app first.

That's exactly what I do.

Hmmm, not sure about that one - don't use sleep/hibernate as I run a
very cut down install of XP and these options are disabled.

if your bios allows you to turn on your computer, presumably it could
turn it on or wake it from sleep/hibernation in time to do the

if you had your computer set to sleep/hibernate after 20min or so,
would it wait until the auto-scan was done, or would it cut an

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter Favorites Sub Folders

2008-07-23 Thread magicpocket

The way the favorites folders work at the moment is pretty unusable and
ridiculously low-tech. They should work like the playlist, drag and
drop really.

If this isn't possible then at least some mechanism to get new
favorites direct into folders is required the concept of deleting a
favorite, then navigating to the folder, then clicking on the
spuriously-designed 'insert deleted item xyz' is a totally alien and
non-intuitive concept which makes squeezecenter favorites no good other
than for grouping a few internet radio URL's.

Re: [slim] Which Random Mix do you use most often?

2008-07-23 Thread JJZolx

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50180

Question: Which Random Mix do you use most often?

- Random songs
- Random artists
- Random albums
- Random years
- No preference, I use several more or less equally

For me, random songs. For background listening this mixes it up quite a
bit. The real control is in the genre selection.

I have very little use for random artists. No sense in queueing up all
20 Van Morrison albums or even the 3 Megadeth. That's _way_ more
Megadeth than I can take in one sitting and it would take too much
skipping to make listening like this useful.

Random albums is better, but for casual background listening I'd seldom
want to listen to whole albums. If I'm going to listen to 45-60 minutes
of a single album then I'd just as soon pick one out myself. Again, it
would take a lot of skipping to make this useful for me. If you could
easily skip albums instead of tracks, then it would be better.

Random years can be fun, and is 2nd on my list of preferences. Unlike
artists and albums, it mixes songs by different artists. The trouble
with it is that it can easily hit on a year with just one or very few
albums, and then you're not much better off than with the random album
or artist mixes.

Just like anyone else, audiophiles come in all flavors. To some,

Others just want to buy the latest high-tech shiny doo-dad off the

Hi thesil,

I use iTunes to rip my CD's.

In order to have Artworks linked to Albums/Songs, this is the procedure
that works for me (all my Cd's are in Apple Lossless):

In Itunes (sorry I have iTunes in french, so I have translated the
command names):
- go in your library
- select "Show artwork" in "presentation"
- Select a song or Album, play it, you will normally see the artwork.
- Go with your mouse on the artwork image, right click then "copy"
go on the song/album, right click, select "get information"
- in the box image/artwork, right click then paste
- click OK

It will normally add the artwork in your aac/mp3 files

All my current equipments are on UPS. Computers, servers, DVR, SB3,

Not much help but would agree that the New Wireless Network is the
place to look as it worked at your home.

A quick note about auditioning any Slim Devices produces away from ones
home. Take a laptop and keep everything local to ones laptop. Don't mess
with other peoples networks for they are the huge unknown plus after one
leaves something of theirs might not work properly and guess who they
are going to call! I think it is completely OK to borrow an internet
connect to show network music services but only by bringing a
connection to the Duet or laptop.

I keep everything local to the Duet and run it in Ad-hoc mode so that I
am not using their wireless network (most demos are SB3 or Transporter
for me).

Do simple homeplug adapters (ie, not the ones with built-in 4 port

It's just a web page, albeit a little more complex than a standard page.

the SC can be displayed. Sorry for the confusion. This is a $900

Umm, maybe I missed something, but how would the SB/SBR and your stereo
work if it had no power? Not getting network connectivity would be
inconsequential at that point.

While we are talking electrics
The latest regs for elecs in the UK are pushing towards radial rather
than ring circuits. The advantage of the ring main is that the load is
reduced on the wire (ie. the chances of it going up in flames ;) as the
power can go either way around the ring, to that meaty 5kw fan heater.

You will normally have a number of radial circuits already, one for
your hot water cyclinder, one to your cooker etc. So its not that much
different and is cheaper for house builders companies.

A spur takes its power from a ring main, so its affectively part of a
ring main, though you shouldnt spur from a spur unless you fuse it
correctly.

Note builders being builders, if you have an extension added to your
house, rather than rip up the floor to continue the ring main, they
will look in the ceiling and drop a spur from your upstairs ring main,
so one end of your room may indeed be on a different ring main.

Finally dont forget the Part P "gravy train", that you need to be
registered to be messing with some of your electrics anyway.. Though
when you move house normally the most you will be asked to have done by
the mortgage company is a visual check of the consumer unit if you dont
have a certificate.

Anyway regarding wireless v homeplug.. I didnt notice any difference
myself, apart from the extra flashing from the network port keeps me
awake :)

[slim] Embarassing Audition

2008-07-23 Thread danniboi

This moirning I brought my squeezebox duet over to a friends house to
ausition at his house after weeks of bragging about how the duet was
man's highest technical achievement to date. The setup process went
flawlessly or so it seemed. We were able to bring it up on his wireless
network after entering the WEP key, and we were able to play some tracks
that I had on my laptop (I had to rip a CD to the laptop, I normally
don't keep any music locally I just stream Rhapsody). When we tried to
select Music Services>Rhapsody>My Library we selected a track that is
supposed to be in that library and tried to play it... when this
happens it gives a brief splash where the duet controller says that it
is 'getting track info' after which it disappears and then nothing
happens. Eventually I end up pushing the home button (bottom left of
scrollwheel) until it shows the home or now playing screen where it
shows the track, the time elapsed with progress bar and the album art.
ODDLY enough it shows the track as "Stopped" here but I can't get any
further.

I am about to jump out a window here... Any one experience this? I am
have a log file from the C:>Program Files>blah blah blah log but its
too big to upload here? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

X10 devices have the same problem, albeit at much lower frequencies.
And indeed, turning on an electric dryer or range (causing the load to
create a path between the two phases) is a good way to test whether
signal integrity could be improved by a coupling device. Often just a
capacitor is all you need. You can get "passive couplers" that plug
into a dryer outlet, like this: http://www.smarthome.com/4816a2.html

They might help with homeplug too. Unless you install such a coupler,
the signals have to get across either by capacitive coupling in the
wiring and breaker panels, or perhaps by making it all the way back to
the distribution transformer. That doesn't work very well for X10, and
I'd expect it to work even worse for homeplug.

-Running- SC and merely -displaying- it are two different things. If
the device has wi-fi and a web browser, it probably can display the web
interface, the Nokia 770 is a good interface for a small touch screen.

However -running- it requires not-inconsiderable horsepower: a ~700 MHz
CPU and 512 MB of RAM minimum, plus an OS that will allow you to install
programs.

Hi,

those nevo remotes (Q50 + S70) are running a closed down Windows Mobile
OS, this includes a browser (S70 only, probably a Mobile-IE) but
certainly not the ability to install own software - not to mention a
complete server like SC!

concerning controlling a remote SC:

I think the Handheld theme should work better than the Nokia one,
because it better suites the format of the S70 display (portrait
instead of landscape)...
Try both and you know for sure :-)

kind regards,

Well I still can't get it to work! What am I doing wrong? First of all
my playlists work fine in itunes, so it's reading the xml file ok. That
file is in the itunes music folder, above the folder that actually
contains the music files. There's an itunes music library.xml and an
itunes library.xml in the folder. I directed the path of the xml file
in the squeezecenter settings to the itunes music library.xml file
directly, not just the folder it's in. I'm not sure what to do under
general settings for music location. I also have to put the itunes
music folder and playlist path in there too even though the path is
also under the itunes tab in the settings?

Someone said something about the xml file having to be in the default
location. Where is that? My itunes library file and music are on my
main hard drive with my OS. I'm utterly flummoxed.

Re: [slim] Powerline network question.

2008-07-23 Thread bigfool1956

That's really going to depend on what type of UPS you have, and how you
have it set up. For the homeplugs to keep working they must all be on a
UPS, plus homeplugs are very sensitive to being blocked by cable breaks
and other electronics.

For example, I have a pair I used between my router and my cable modem,
and if I plug one or other of them into a simple extension lead, they
completely cease to talk to each other.

Based on this my feeling is that unless you whole house is on a UPS,
you are unlikely to be successful. However, it may be possible to set
things up in a way that it can operate.

It will, if you set it to do so. Look under Volume Adjustment -- the
exact location of the setting varies depending on SC version and
interface (web ui, Controller, IR remote). Personally I prefer the
"Smart Gain" setting, which uses the album gain tags if you are playing
an album, or the track gain tags if you are playing individual tracks
from various albums. See

I'm no expert but I recommend not messing around with the database.
Besides it being risky, you'll have to make the same correction, which
will be boring and labor intensive, every time you do a rescan. I would
recommend going into your playlist directory and deleting the playlist
there or point Squeeze Center to an empty folder for playlists and do a
rescan.

[slim] Repairing Playlist Database

2008-07-23 Thread Tonitone

Hi

I have one phantom playlist that appears but since it has no name I
cannot delete it in the web interface.

I imagine when i scan the playlists they go into a table somewhere
since changing the playlists manually only results in a change when I
rescan.

Can someone tell me where this table is and how i can edit it manually
in order to delete the bad record.

My server is on a windows machine.

Thanks

Tony

Re: [slim] Random Song Restart

2008-07-23 Thread jonhewer

Having contacted support about this issue, I was told that it was most
likely a network issue. I was asked to try a different router etc,
however I've not been able to.

However, I am now running Squeezecenter off a new machine, and am yet
to have experienced the restarts.

Ok, then please upload your server.log file. And make sure that one song you're
trying to play isn't DRMed.

Re: [slim] Random Song Restart

2008-07-23 Thread Smiffy

Don't know if this helps but.

A Couple of day's ago my bedroom SB3 started to restart a song
randomly, the display would go blank for 2 seconds and come back again
randomly.

I have traced it down to the router I use. It appears to be temperature
sensitive. Now summer has arrived and the room temp is > 21°C the
throughput of the router drops intermittently to 1Mb, putting a cooling
fan on the router cured the problem.

Re: [slim] Network Test: Wireless vs. Homeplug

2008-07-23 Thread simbo

I'm running Homeplugs between downstairs (where the router is) and
upstairs (where the home PC is), as with all UK houses they're on
different circuits (i.e. separate fuses on the circuit board), and they
work fine. Mind you, we have one of those old fashioned fuseboxes with
bakelite fuse cases and graded wire. Not sure Id be so successful on
RCDs.
