[slim] OSX - How to Install LAME
I have OS X 10.5.5, SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 and I need to install LAME. I have tried 4 different compiled installers. Including the one with the 2 lines of instruction at the WIKI link http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/LAMEForTranscoding and nothing works. I put the iTunes-Lame script file in both the "all user" library, and my user library, and iTunes shows that the script is there, but SqueezeCenter says no go. I have now spent over 4 hours trying to find out how to install LAME on os X, and I am generally not an idiot, and I have not found one set of clear instructions anywhere. Re: [slim] Favorite Pluggins?
I use the following plugins on my Squeezebox Classic 3 + Squeezecenter webinterface (I really do not known if they all work with the duet): - *Album review* (Michael Herger): An easy plugin. I check the album reviews often when I listen to the music. Long reviews you can only read further on the web interface. You can have full album reviews to your currently playing songs right on your web interface or on the player's display. This includes links to separate track reviews (if available). - *Biography* (Michael Herger): The same comment as for Album review Ever wanted to have more information about the artist currently playing on your Squeezebox? Get his biography, pictures, links to related artists and more on the web interface and right on your device's display - *MusicInfoSCR* (Michael Herger ): It is only a settings plugin. This screensaver displays information about the music being played, your player's state and is freely configurable. - *Custom browse* (Erland Isaksson ): A more difficult settings plug-in to make it possible to customize the structure, contents and sorting of the browse menus on the player and web interface. It is a necessary for the multi library plug-in. - *Multi Library* (Erland Isaksson ): Also a more difficult settings plug-in. This plug-in makes it possible to divide your squeezecenter library into different sub libraries, requires Custom Browse plugin to be able to browse the sub libraries. I use this because I have divided my music collection in 2 librarys: one normal and a separate Blues-music library. - *Trackstat *(Erland Isaksson ): A plug-in to store statistics such as rating, last played time and play counts in a separate table. You can set the ratings via the Squeezebox interface or web interface IMO an must have plugin. I use this plug-in mostly on the webinterface. It is on my Nas-server a little bit slow, but you can get almost every statistic information you need. - *Last.Fm* (James Craig) LastFm is difficult to explain what it does. It is a different way to encounter music. I will refer you to the website: www.last.fm - *Lyrics Display *(Les Smithson): An must have plugin. Shows the lyrics or karaoke of the currently playing song on the Squeezebox display and webinterface - *Lazy Search* (Stuart Hickinbottom): Also a must have. You can search must faster Lazy Search Music is a plugin that lets you search for music without having to multi-tap each letter in the search text you're after, and displays search results "as you type" -- wowo wowo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18033 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54470 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Duet Controller Shuffle Behavior
I wish the behavior of the Conroller was different when starting off an adhoc playlist. I think whenever you are on a highlighted song and hit play, that song should immediately play. In the shuffle mode now, I'll go down to the song level within an album and hit play on a song only to have a different song on that album play. I think the behavior should be to play that song first and shuffle the rest. There's already the ability to shuffle an album at the "album" level or if you select "play all" so I don't understand why the same thing happens when you scroll to a song. Re: [slim] Updating Squeezebox duet controller firmware
This seems to be a common problem with the controller with just about every release. Every time I go to upgrade my controller sw, I cross my fingers. I think I have a 50% chance of success based on my history with it. Now with 7.2.1, I'm only having the failed message. The reliability of sw upgrades for the controller needs to be a quality focus item for slim devices going forward. The current implementation is not acceptable. Luckily it has always (mostly) worked regardless of the rev it was on. The chief complaint I'd have is that it takes too long to "wake-up" after not being used for some time. -- thomsens thomsens's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1352 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54449 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Favorite Pluggins?
I'd agree with MusicIP but RandomMix can also help you discover your music collection and it's a lot less hassle to set up (an awful lot less!). AlienBBC for listening to the unique BBC Radio offerings (esp. Radio 4 and World Service) is my all time top plugin. It's become a bit superseded by the simpler iPlayer plugin for me now though. I'd also find it hard to live without Last.fm. Being in the UK I can't get Pandora which I believe is sort of similar. Michael Herger (now Logitec employee) has made some seriously good plugins: MusicInfo: Allows you to configure the info you see on your players displays Album Review & Biography: Enables you to see info about the music you are currently listening to on players/controller/web ui. Does suffer a bit from inconsistencies due to the AllMusicGuide interface but generally works quite well. I also really like the various InfoBrowser adds ons, mostly created by bpa. For instance the UK TV guides, the BBC News browsers and the Slim Devices forums reader (created by Triode I think). I also like Radio Feeds plugin which logically organises Radio Feeds for me. And then of course there is ShoutCast Radio, but as with Last.fm (and MusicIP I guess) I'm not too sure you can class it as a plugin anymore as it's become part of the main SC distribution. Re: [slim] Can SB access NAS without the SqueezeCenter turned on?
thats why my answer to you was the best answer, i actually listened to what you wanted. ;) in all seriousness, there are a 1000 ways to slaughter a pig. so it all depends on what your exact goals are, and how you want to do it. keep in mind, they do not have a upnp solution yet. while i think its probably coming soon, its hard to say when. therefore the best solution to meet your goals as i see it, is to get a NAS, which is great for more than just storing music btw. some infrant/netgear NAS devices come with SC built in. but the drawback is SC is slow on these devices, (via webUI anyway). however, some other NAS devices are a lot faster, but on those you need to "hack em" to some degree to get SC installed on them. u could also setup a small desktop that would "wake on lan" and run SC from there, and store all your music there as well. this is to a degree overkill, so it has pros and cons too. personally, i am going to get a NAS one day, b/c i do not want a computer on just to listen to music. i'll probably wait until netgear/infrant make a NAS that has a real processor in it, assuming that ever happens. but regardless i'm gonna wait until i see how this upnp solution works as well. i actually think the upnp solution (that uses SN and your SB + your local tunes) would be very elegant with a NAS as opposed to a computer for the local tunes. BUT we need to see how it'll work first. (if the NAS has a generic media server built in, i wouldn't think its a problem). if you need clarifications, just ask, BUT you should google upnp and so on. to do this properly, you will need to educate yourself. -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / SBC - w/SC 7.3b - Win XP Pro SP3 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54434 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can SB access NAS without the SqueezeCenter turned on?
Thanks everyone for chiming in. The depth of this thread is going way over my head. I have no idea what upnp is.. Well, then again, I had no idea what NAS was until a few days ago, when I started searching the internet. Basically, my wife and I would like to aggregate all our music files into one drive. I can let her transfer her music files in her laptop to my desktop or even my laptop, but I thought it would be more convenient if she could access the "centralized" storage regardless of whether my PC/laptop is turned on or off. Similarly, I thought it would be better if my SB Boom could access the network-attached "central" storage directly without having to negotiate through my desktop where the SqueezeCenter currently resides. [slim] Favorite Pluggins?
I am a relative newbie to Squeezecenter and in reading this forum I find there are so many things that it can do other than just play chosen music off your HD. I find myself, and would assume other new users feel the same, confused about the functionality of many of the plugins. My hope is that this thread will expose: 1. most used plugins 2. purpose expressed in layman terms 3. basic setup of the plugin to give a good starting point for new users. My favorite so far is Musicip. Had some problems in getting it set up and am still experimenting with the settings. Purpose for me is to explore my music collection. I found myself listening to basically the same songs and cd's over and over. Musicip creates a mix based on its own analysis of your music. This mix can be customized in many different ways which will yield different mixes based on user defined parameters set in the setting menu of squeezecenter. The result is often exposure to music that has been forgotten or overlooked for far to long. I'm still playing with the settings but m'ip has already exposed me to long forgotten favorites. A special thanks to the developers who spend their time not only developing the Plugins but also support those of us who use them. I'll throw my two cents in to say that an official (or native) iPod Touch app would be enough to get me to buy an iPod and give it a try. (I own the Duet bundle.) I guess my issue with the "iPhone" or any cell phone as a remote is that I get too many calls and emails. Even after hours. After I get home from work I put my phone on its charger and don't want to go near it for fear that I might end up doing some more work. I want to be left alone while I'm at home listening to my SqueezeBox. In my case, I see the iTouch as a better option for the Sonos solution. I agree about the touchscreen interface of the iPhone/iTouch... it leaves a lot to be desired as I compare with a traditional remotes with physical buttons. Call me old fashion, but I want buttons in my remote. As I said before, for me listening to music is more of a "passive" activity than an "interactive" one. I want to hold a beer (an IPA preferably) on one hand and the remote on the other and without looking at the remote lower/raise the volume or skip to the next song. I am not one of those folks that can handle a touchscreen with one hand without looking at it. Having to use two hands to use my remote forces me to put down my beer. That's a no, no... after a long day. I have played with the Phillips Pronto and with the not too popular Harmony 1000. These had ergonomically efficient "physical" buttons for certain frequently used functions. I don't see these in the iPhone/iTouch. Not having at least a comfortable volume up/down button would drive me up a wall. Touchscreens are the trend, but I'm afraid that it also has its limitations as a remote. A combination of ergonomically placed buttons and a touchscreen would be best. I might not be as popular as you, but I have never gotten a phone call on my iPod Touch . My iTouch lays around like the SB Controller would (use to), and my iPhone is usually on my person, so it can be used at a moment's notice as well (although there is that chance someone might call me on that one). I'm not a fan of Apple's but this really is slick as a controller. I like physical buttons on my remotes too, but is not a remote. It's a controller with a view into SC, without having to look at the front panel of my SBs, or even be in the same room. I'm quite sure touchscreen school would be a very short class for someone like yourself. So if we can just get a native iPhone/Touch app, life would be truly grand. iPeng is nice, and pippen did a great job with it. But being a Safari app, it can never match the performance and smoothness of a well done native iApp. There simply is no down side to this. Those who don't "get it", don't have to get it. Finding it difficult to repeat. Did just get the symptons by rebooting PC whilst playing, with that setting on 'pause'. When I changed it to 'stop' it oddly seems to corrupt the original now playing list (ie just 4 tracks from the album showing). A couple of notes here: 1. The core of the SqueezeCenter software is licensed under the GPL. Some components that are packaged with it are not (installers, some graphics, fonts, etc...), so redistributing a version of SqueezeCenter that uses these would require some kind of license with Logitech. 2. The protocols are completely open and folks are welcome to build clients to connect to SqueezeCenter. 3. The firmware in the Squeezebox 1/2/3/Classic/Boom/Receiver/Transporter is closed source, alas, due to some restrictions from the manufacturer of our CPU chip. 4. The software running on the Squeezebox Controller and SqueezePlay is open and licensed under the Logitech Public Source License, which has some restrictions on redistribution but is available for licensing. 5. It's definitely not the rescan suggestion - I rarely rescan. For example I just powered off now (I had been listening to some random tracks) , and powered on 5 minutes later, and now playing is again showing an album I played some days ago. Actually in this case I had rebooted the PC leaving the SB3 on. Testing again, the SB3 is beahving OK so long as the PC stays up, even when the SB3 gets power cycled. I think the issue is more related to the PC getting rebooted between listening sessions. The PC also goes into standby after 15minutes of idle (might have the same effect as a reboot). Does SC keep the now playing list in memory, or is it written to disk at all? There are a couple of possible issues here - firstly, are you doing any kind of automatic or manual rescan during the time your SB is off? If so, it's very likely that your playlist is being wiped as SC rebuilds the database. There's not much that anyone can do about that AFIAK. [slim] Now Playing list empties itslelf
I've been annoyed by this since, I think, I upgraded to 6.5.3, and 7.2 hasn't fixed it either. I find that the Now Playing list is often empty, or has not been updated with what I had been listening to. I always power off my SB3 between listening sessions (ie my remote sends a 'stop' and then powers off my amp which has a trigger output to switch the SB power supply on/off) - ie the power to the SB3 is cut off. Not sure if that is relevant. Also I tend to listen to randome songs, which might (not) be relevant. When I next turn the SB3 on I want to be able to pick up from where I left off last time, but more often than not the 'Now playing' list has not been updated, or is even empty. I've tried changing the screen saver whilst playing to 'jump to now playing' (which I think is a new option), but that doesn't help. It does seem to behave better if I manually view 'now playing' before powering off. I'm sure it used to work OK (ie pre 6.5.3). -- mortod mortod's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54458 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Streaming and Open Standards
I am drawn to the Squeezebox solution to computer audio for a number of reasons, open source and open standards being among them. As I understand it the only software that is not "free" is that associated with the receiving hardware. That seems a reasonable business model. Slim/Logitech have to have some income from the project or there would be no hardware. I do wonder if Loigitech will licence this hardware/software solution so it may be incorporated into other manufactures solutions. It would be nice to have an open standard for audio streaming - that would facilitate development and enable users to attach whatever hardware took their fancy to the same network. At the moment Apple, Sonos and Logitech and Linn have different standards, and as others jump into the market it will get even more fragmented. Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app
It's a clever move by Sonos. The main thing stopping me from using their kit was that I could get similar performance from the Duet for much less and the Duet handset suited me better. I already have a 'Touch' so the cost of switching for me is now pretty cheap. I don't intend to switch in the near term but If they establish a lead in any area that I'm interested in, it's a possibility. The remote for Itunes is quick, enjoyable to use and does make other handsets feel 'clunky'. The main problem for Logitech here might be that they would be trying to make a business out of just selling one unit for £100 rather than two for £240-£280. -- HectorHughMunro HectorHughMunro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

hah, interesting thread. I'll bet the folks at Logitech are scratching their heads over this one. It will be interesting to see whether and how they choose to respond - take too long deciding what to do or stick to the Controller only route and watch their market share diminish or maintain and potentially grow market share by quickly following suite. Re: [slim] AAC Plus on Mac
> > there's no good (wiki or otherwise) instructions about upgrading 6.5 to > 7.x for Mac that I can find. > You're right but since it is 10 months since 7.0 - there is unlikely one to be written. Not upgrading unless you really have to or you have a clean start (e.g. new PC) is a very sensible approach. If you do upgrade allow for 2-3 weeks settling down time when things don't all work as well as they used to. If you expect this delay then you will not be disappointed and if upgrade goes smoothly - then you'll be happy. If you do decide to upgrade then you will then decide which version 7.2.1 has just been released or 7.3 which is planned for early Dec. Immediate Plugin compatability for 7.3 may not true for all plugins. General Points to watch. 1. Directory naming may change - Slimserver to Squeezecenter. Plugins organisation changes and so locations of plugins may also change. There are now two directories for plugins - one for users and one for SC internal plugins. Make sure users plugins are installed in the correct directory. 2. Make sure you know all the Plugins you use and locate all updated versions before upgrading to 7.x. Be careful - some plugins will not work with all version of 7.x. Check for any "gotchas" such as Last.fm if not in UK/US/Germany so you know what to expect. 3. Make a note of preferences - the upgrade should migrate them all but some may be forgotten (especially plugins). 4. Backup your entire Slimserver installation so that you can revert quickly if the upgrade goes pear-shaped. 5. Manage expectations of other users. 6. Don't upgrade anything else at the same time 7. Check system specs. User interface changes with 7.x which can be more CPU intensive. The old user interface is still available as Classic but some Settings are only accessible with the new interface. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54339 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well written iPhone apps start up in under a second. The iPhone reconnects to wifi faster than the Controller does. There is also no issue with the iPhone having to wake up from suspend, like the Controller has to when it has been idle for more than an hour. At the same time the iPhone's battery life is better, while giving near instant wifi reconnection and app startup. A well written iPhone app is going to equal or beat the Controller in most areas: - it should be just as responsive - the UI has the potential to be easier to use (the flick to scroll approach to navigating lists on the iPhone works better than the Controller's wheel and the iPhone can also have its handy "jump to the initial letter" navigation) - text entry will be far, far faster - it reconnects to the network faster - it never has to wake from suspend - its battery life is better Where the iPhone will lose out is the lack of hardware buttons for volume and playback control. Picking up the Controller to adjust the volume or pause will be a fair bit quicker than the iPhone app, assuming the Controller isn't suspended of course. -- andynormancx Yes, it will. The whole idea was to bring a product to market that the third party development and enthusiast 'home brew' community could really go to town with. That clearly has not happened. I still think its a great product though. But in terms of what it does for the money it costs, it's not anywhere near as good a value prospect as an iPod touch/iPhone. Audio out on the SBc will really add a lot of value, but IMO they really need to get the IR emitor working - then it will be unbeatable. As for the Sonos remote, i too would want a dedicated remote. Using the iPod is a great move and i would use it if i had a Sonos and iPod/iPhone - but they are hardly innovating, loads of people have do this already (including Apple themselves). What surprised me at first was the fact that a company that already knows plenty of people will pay over the odds for thier products would hand out a completely free app. Not even $5? And what about existing controller sales? But i really dont think Sonos care about sales of the CP100 - What i suspect Sonos is actually doing here is a canny bit of market research, and what better way to do it? they are watching how this (solid and slick, but fairly run-of-the-mill app) goes down and what people want, following the progress of the SBc. My guess is that Sonos are developing a new remote that will really trump SD/Logitech (touch screen, maybe even with audio) which we will see in the not to distant future. -- autopilot *Lounge :* Squeezebox Classic -> Cambridge Audio Azur 640a -> Mission 701's. *Bedroom :* Squeezebox Receiver -> Trends TA10.1 Class-T -> Kef Cresta 1's *Office :* Softsqueeze -> Logitech Active 5.1's. *Kitchen :* Squeezebox Boom -coming soon- *Roaming : * Squeezebox Controller -> Logitech mm28 portable speakers / Shure E2c's *Controllers :* Squeezebox Controller x 2 + Logitech Harmony one *Server :* SC7.3b (Vista 64) + AlienBBC, iPlayer & MusicIP headless. I doubt that Sonos introduced > it to cannibalized their hardware sales. Is more likely that they are > using it to introduce their hardware system to a big existing and > growing population of iPhone/iPod touch users. You are right. I am sure that Sonos sees their official FREE iPhone/iTouch app as a way to encourage more sales of their hardware. Sonos didn't develop their app because there wasn't a Sonos app on the iPhone App Store. There were already THREE Sonos apps in the app store (a $20 one called ZoneMaster, a free lite version of ZoneMaster, and a $15 one called Zones). Yet Sonos created a FREE app that virtually duplicates their hardware controller (probably to the chagrin of the guys that developed the $15 and $20 apps). And I am SURE Sonos didnt introduce it to cannibalize their hardware sales. I am also sure that most Sonos controllers are sold with the purchase of a buyers first Sonos player. Likewise, I am sure that most SBCs are sold with a buyers first Duet, rather than as a separate purchase. There are ALREADY over 10 million iPhones out there, and who knows how many iPod Touches, and that number is escalating every week. Sonos sees the potential sales of lots of their players to all those iPhone/iPod Touch owners as being a lot bigger that the potential sales of ADDITIONAL Sonos controllers to their existing customers as being a compelling business model. As the owner of one SB2, two SB3s, a SB Boom, and an iPhone (the iPhone since the first week of July, 2007), and given the fact that I ALWAYS have the iPhone in my shirt pocket, I would be the first to encourage SD and Logitech to follow Sonos lead and develop a free iPhone app for the App Store that duplicates the functionality of the SBC, for both existing customers and for the same marketing reasons that led Sonos to create a free app (even though, as I said, there were already three Sonos apps in the App Store). With 10-20 million iPhone/iPod Touch users out there, I cant be the only one that has both an iPhone or iPod Touch AND a Squeezebox. -- Jim Wald Jim Wald's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4783 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

And the SBC is too expensive for what it does (yes, even with 7.3 activation of the line-out). I'm minded that the community of Touch/iPhone owners and music streamer owners has a huge overlap. Having a controller app for the Touch/iPhone is pretty much a 'hygiene factor' for any supplier now. -- amcluesent amcluesent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB Duet connected with external DAC
I played with SB Duet Settings. I turned off Audio when the unit is off. I also set that when powered off, receiver should be stopped when again turned on. But it does not work ... Now I see another topic with the same issue and I see that somebody already opened the bug. So I can only hope that in the next software release we will get something that works ... I do believe though that the whole concept with powering on/off of SB Duet should be redesigned. It should go in power off modus after certain period of time when not used and in this mode it should release its digital outputs. -- DejanM DejanM's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19066 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54356 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
