Pity you'll be running a whole GUI when all you want to do is run one

Access to Unix is best accomplisehd with stuff like ssh.

I don't agree that is uses up a significant amount of memory.

It uses a lot more than bash. And bash doesn't even run when you're not
using it ;)
But regardless, you can alway just change your inittab to boot into 3
and it boots without X-windows. Then all you are wasting is a few
 hundred MB of disk storage.

Obviously, but the OP was going to use VNC to manage his server, which
AFAIK implies X.

I guess SC would still work so you could still access music this way -

All SB players need to be connected to some server.
This can either be your local SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork (which is
a customized version of SC, more or less).
If SN ceased to exist you would have to run SC locally.

SC is open source so development would still be possible.
The SB firmware however isn't open. Unless Logitech would release the
source or someone reverse-engineered the firmware we would be stuck
with whatever is available at the time.

So simply:

Logitech/SB development present = SN or SC
Logitech/SB development gone = SC only (=local PC / server required)

If you remove your SN login info from SC you still have access to much
of the content in your Internet Radio menu. What I don't know is if
these still go out to SN anonymously or if they are direct streams.
Obviously, without a subscription management tool like on SN, anything
requiring unique login info will not work on SC.

But you can Cut Paste any standard station URL from any outside
source into your SC Favorites, assuming the stream is in a native SB

No, you can't stream via Safari. Safari can issue file playback with

There are plugins for putting your server to sleep/hibernation, so I'd
guess there are ways of waking the server only when desired. I'd check
the NAS forum.

You could test your theory by simply unplugging the SB power or

then wakes the harddisk from hibernation to answer the request in SC ...
I'll try toby10's idea.

But nevertheless it would be good to tell the SB to keep sleeping (and

[slim] Slot a new track(s) in the middle of a currently playing playlist

2009-03-18 Thread minx_man

I'm in the process of deciding between the sonos OR squeezecenter
solution for my home, I wonder if you might be able to answer a
question on creating playlists.

I currently use foobar on a Win XP PC to play my music. One of the
great things about it is you can browse your (large) music collection
very quickly and easily knock up a playlist of 4 or 5 albums. So lets
assume you've created an on the fly playlist but after listening for
a while you really want to slot in another track or two from your
library. You want this new track(s) to play right after the currently
playing track whilst keeping the rest of the now playing playlist in
order. In foobar (and most other software media players) you simply
drag the song from your library and drop it just below the currently
playing song and voila your done.

I've installed the sqeezecenter on my pc and tried creating playlists
in both the web interface and using the softsqueeze player. Both seem
to be restricted to only adding tracks to the end of the current
playlist. Is there anyway to achieve what I'm suggesting?

[slim] Simplify w Itouch vs Squeezebox

On one of the music boards I saw that there is an app for the I-pod

picqued my curiosity

It goes a step further, you can log into your library form anywhere
that has an internet connection

I have an 8 gig I-touch that I never use, (it was a throw in with an
Apple purchase), but I don't want to reinvent the wheel - I have a duet
with two recievers, and after some initial issues they have been rock
solid so I'm very happy but am curious if either is better as far as
sound quality

Google searches have reveal precious little, so I thought I'd ask here

2009-03-18 Thread aubuti

On a real SB, you can add a track to play immediately after the
currently playing track by browsing to the track, then pressing and
*holding* the + button for about 2-3 seconds. This works on all IR
remotes and the SB Duet Controller. Note that you have to be browsing
in your library -- not the current playlist -- for this to work.

I don't know if it will work with SoftSqueeze because I imagine it's
tricky to emulate the press-and-hold action with a software SB. Give it
a try and see, but it definitely works with the hardware remotes.

Re: [slim] How do you slot a new track(s) in the middle of a currently playing playlist

2009-03-18 Thread Dogberry2

With the remote (or the Duet Controller), you press and hold the +
button to add a track to play next. A press-and-release of the + adds
the track to the end of the current playlist; press-and-hold (for a
couple of seconds) adds the track to play next.

In the Squeezecenter web interface you can move items in the playlist
around by dragging and dropping them. It can only be done once the item
is in the playlist, but you just hover over it so it's highlighted and

 Pat Farrell
 http://www.pfarrell.com/

How practical is a reflow oven when one just needs to repair, remove,
or add one part? It's the technology that makes the Metcal expensive.
It is not just the use of heat. Metcal uses RF as well as heat to
solder. One gets much better flow and higher joint strength at lower
temperatures. Also the handle is cool with only the actual tip being
hot and itÂ’s so much lighter and easier for doing precise soldering
with the Metcal. Metcal saves time and power because they don't have to
be left on. They are up to soldering temperature in less then 10
seconds. Changing tips (temperature or type) is as simple as turning
the Metcal off, using the silicone pad to pull the tip out and pushing
the tip you want in. No cool down or need for tools so you don't burn
yourself or waiting for it to heat back up to temp.

Like I said, one has to use one, then it's hard to go back to a Weller.
Besides, a Weller worth having for the type work a Metcal is great for
is over half the cost of a Metcal. IMHO, might as well pay the rest and
have the best. YMMV.

I'm using VirginMedia cable. They don't do bandwidth shaping per se -
their approach is Subscriber Traffic Monitoring, which is much more a
blunt instrument. They basically cut your bandwidth if you exceed
certain download/upload limits (which I rarely do).

Perhaps Virgin are doing something though..

Re: [slim] What happens if Logitech go tits up ?

2009-03-18 Thread Goodsounds

Before you whip yourself and others into a frenzy, check out the
information that shows that this proposition is nonsense. At least, for
now.

Logitech is a public company and its results are released quarterly.
For the 9 months ending December 2008, income after tax was $142
million. Sales and income were down for the quarter compared to the
year before, but that's true of most companies.

Shareholders equity exceeds $1 billion. Sure, it's possible for any
company to have future writeoffs, restructurings, downturns in the
business, etc to erode equity. I'd guess that many other companies
would love to be in the relatively strong financial position that
Logitech has right now.

Also in this context, it is likely fair to assume that the Streaming
Media unit is a very small part of the total entity. Probably even
immaterial from an operating results perspective.

As bigger as easier to get rid of uneconomic parts.

But one part of my decision for the Squeezebox was because it uses open
source software which is running on a local system. Loss of services
would be painful but I guess we would still have many possibilities
open due to the the great support of the community.

Re: [slim] Music Catalogue in PDF - Requirements?

2009-03-18 Thread tipsen

epoch1970;407423 Wrote:
 I like it a lot.
May I up the ante and suggest a header or footer with page number and
 an index ?
Extra, the header could include, for example, the value relevant to the
sorting method for the 1st album on the current page, or for the 1st and
 last of the page.
Then browsing is easier since it is relatively easy to spot in which
direction you should turn the pages when looking for something.

 Something like this
for alpha sort by artist Gnaris Barkley - St. Elsewhere or Gnaris
 Barkley to Goldfrapp
and for sort by date: 1995 - Garbage by Garbage or 1995 - Garbage
 to 1998 - Gary Moore

Just my 2cts. I don't know how you've managed to generate the PDF, but
I know indexes, pages counts and dynamic headers are not the most
 trivial parts to get right.

(I hope it's portable, too -linux, mac)

UPDATE. Ah yes, php. Does core php generate PDF? Or you're using
another lib ? (make it perl and that will be a tremendous plugin! And
Logi could sell a print service)

I want to express my opinion on the interest of the booklet. I think it
can bring tremendous gain in usability for some users. Browsing a paper
catalog is so SIMPLE. And, it can be beautiful and inspiring -you've
already got this covered, it see, and FAST (with proper cues).
I have offered a slim system to my parents. They like the SB3 because
they can listen to any CD from the remote, and because it is reliable.
They are used to books, and much less to computer which are too
 complicated.
I am sure they would be delighted using a paper catalog to make their
 listening choices.
Thanks for the ideas. I've also considered page numbers and an
index/toc. Generally I would like to keep the layout as minimalistic as
possible - with the aim of getting the maximum amount of albums on each
page. But header and footer could to some degree be user configurable
and then it's up to each individual.
Somebody suggested creating sections meaning that artists starting
with A and artists starting with B (and so on) are separated by a
page break. This is nice since additions to the squeezecenter database
will not imply a print of the entire catalogue again - just the
corresponding section. The page numbering conflicts with this idea
unless the numbering scheme is something like A - 1, A - 2, A - 3, B -
1, B - 2,... - any other ideas how to avoid this conflict?
The program is a php-script and thus depends on at least a
mysqli-extension as well as a pdf-library (TCPDF) - this is NOT an
elegant solution but it's what I know - Unfortunately I don't know any
PERL and furthermore I don't think PERL will play ball with the pdf
library!
Thanks for your ideas and inputs - I will put them on the to do list!
/Tommy
