The L version, with stock firmware, passes more tests. The jest of the article is that the firmware in the non-L version is terribly buggy. There is a chance that more recent firmware is better. But if you plan to use DD-WRT or Tomato or other open source firmware, the stock stuff makes zero difference. No one has said that the WRT54GL is a perfect, high performance router, its just cheap and flexible. And with alternative firmware, lots of folks swear by it. The WRT54GL is not the solution if you are driving the network hard, but very few homes do that. Most homes in the US have broadband connections that can't load a network hard. I have a fast, and expensive cable modem connection, and it does only 15mbs on a good day. That's hardly a load. If you are doing mission critical stuff that drives the network to its knees, get a real router. For the rest of us, its fine. Yep, I read the article and it does talk about both. Although it gives a little bit better review of the "L" version than the Non-"L" version. After reading this - I began to feel a little bit of buyer remorse. But what the heck, like you said - its cheap. Went back to Amazon to look a little bit deeper at all the reviews. Its rated 4.5 out of 5 and there we're glowing comments on this router. Several mentioned using Tomato or other 3rd party firmware. One glowing review about a month ago was from a Squeezebox owner! Re: [slim] Combining two filestore trees
Thanks for the replies folks. You are right that 'Browse Artist' is a good way to do this. I do this on my main SB2 setup, and in fact without this option I would never have sorted my library into the two trees. However, I've recently added a Boom to the system. The Boom remote has no letter keys, and I've yet to find a convenient way to jump to a letter of the alphabet in 'Browse Artist' (maybe I've missed something here). I know I can hold the scroll keys to scroll faster, which helps a bit, but I still find it more convenient at times to navigate the folder tree. I have a feeling that to make use of the shortcut idea I'll need to put shortcuts to every folder that's at the end of each branch (ie the individual albums) into a common tree structure. Obviously that'll be too many albums to do manually, so I'm going to look into an automated approach. I recall a program (?cakewalk?) that allowed me to recurse through a folder structure and carry out the same string of commands at every level, so if I can just find out the batch command for adding a shortcut I'll be nearly there. -- chill chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61905 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Native AAC Support
i do 256kbps mp3s, lame 3.96.1 and higher, at -q1 i don't believe i could reliably tell the difference between them, and a CD, in a proper double blind test, and i'd be willing to bet most people here couldn't either. in fact, if the mp3s were just a wee bit louder than the cds, i bet they'd pick the mp3s all day long... (due to a psychoacoustic effect where the ear prefers louder sound) even if someone could tell the difference reliably, in order to do so, you'd need the best equipment AND environment to do so, and the further question would be HOW MUCH BETTER is the difference? meaning, how would you quantify/qualify it? for most peoples purposes, that are less than ideal, i think a HQ mp3, such as mine, more than suffice. I will try to find out. Apart from that, iPeng does show Artists, Albums, Genres and Tracks in one list so it would indeed find the Artist "Boulez", an Album "Buolez - Mémoriales" or a track "Boulez: Memoriale (...exploisante-fixe..)". Re: [slim] Stream an individual file without rescanning?
Well I'll be damned. For some reason, I thought you had to rescan for files to show up there as well. I created a folder called "000 - New Music" on my music server so it shows up at the top of the Music Folder list, dropped in an mp3 file and it works like a charm. Re: [slim] Stream an individual file without rescanning?
Simple answer - just drop the file into your defined SqueezeCenter Music Directory and then go in via the "Browse Music Folder" menu, find the said file and hit "Play". davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61938 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Stream an individual file without rescanning?
Hi folks, Long time fan, first time poster. I've had a Squeezebox for about a year, and I absolutely love it. I've got SqueezeCenter running on Ubuntu, have a number of plugins installed, and use it just about every day. I have a question though; I've looked on the web and the forums, but I'm not sure how to describe what I'm trying to do in search terms. Perhaps someone here can help me out? Is it possible to stream an mp3 file directly from my computer to Squeezebox without first re-scanning the music library? Here's the scenario: My friend is over and we're listening to music. She mentions a band she loves, so I download their mp3 from Amazon Music and want to play it through my stereo right away. Today, however, I need to save that file to my music directory, rescan the music library, and wait two or three minutes until the scan is complete. Is there any way, once I've downloaded it to my computer, I can just send it immediately over to the Squeezebox? I apologize if there's already an obvious answer to this problem, and I hope someone can point me in the right direction. [slim] Ipeng Question...
Hi, My question is about the search function. I have a duet and I really don't like the search function of the device. I have a big collection of classical music and when I rip all my music I didn't pay much attention about tagging and consistency. So on some album the conductor is in the "artist" field some are in the "Comment" There is some CD that the composer is in the "artist" or in the "title" And the worst of all are the interpret with are never in the same field. The thing is that to make a search with the remote you have to specify a field first. So if the interpret you are looking for is in the wrong field you will probably miss it. When I really want to find something particular I need to use Foobar. So, My question is??? Do Ipeng search function could behave like foobar and be able to get me every "Boulez" field that is in my collection. Yes, you can go back to stock FW if you decide that the special FW (Tomato or DD-WRT) doesn't work out. I have a WRT-54GS, which is quite similar to the WRT-54L. The stock FW worked OK for me. The compelling reason for me to move to DD-WRT is that is supports the feature of static DHCP. This means that I can have my network PCs and equipment configured for DHCP and assign the specific IP address in the router. I made this move since the Duet does not support static IP for the controller. It also just makes managing the network much easier. My router is in the basement of a 2 story house. I get great reception throughout the entire house with the power tweaked to 70mw and new higher gain antennas purchased at Radio Shack for ~$8. That made a huge difference. Once again, thanks for all of the replies. Looks like the WRT54GL is the consensus by most of the replies. Especially from some of the "regular" posters on the forum. Having had a Linksys model for 5 years and no problems + great reception, I'm inclined to stay with Linksys. Just hope I don't have to call their CS overseas! Horrible. I was hoping to get one of their (linksys) newer "nicer" looking routers but I will go with the recommendations on this thread. :) I am going to order tonight. I am still willing to listen to other recommendations until then. If I end up with the WRT54GL, then I will try it with the stock FW. If broadcast/reception is bad - then I will go ahead and load Tomato. You can go back to stock FW, right? By hitting reset on router? Or do I have to back it up before switching to Tomato? If the original owner is not willing to cooperate you will need to call SD support and they can un-register your player from the sellers account. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61916 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Trying to get used squeezebox to forget old squeezenetwork settings
Hi guys - I just got my first squeezebox so I'm pretty new to this, but I did search around fairly well and found no answers to this, so sorry if this is an old/easy one. I just bought a used Squeezebox 3 (classic?). Everything is set up fine, except I can't setup the Squeezenetwork (I'll be honest, I'm not even 100% sure what that is, but it seems useful). As far as I can tell, when I connect to the Squeezenetwork it reverts to a previous owners settings - there is an email in there... The pin it gives me gives an error about registration conflict or some such thing. When I log onto the squeezenetwork there are also some saved favorites there - all of the same type of music (making me thing they aren't samples, but someones favorites). Can you think of any way of removing this other person's account and setting up my own (if that is the problem?). I've tried resetting to default settings, no dice. I don't really understand the nature of hte issue, but there is definitely some issue. Thanks folks. -- Superchunk Superchunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29172 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61916 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Although the vast majority of Internet Radio streams are in MP3 format, streams can also be in MP3Pro, WMA, AAC, AAC+, and OGG. So a 24 bit AAC, MP3Pro or OGG will sound better than a 24 bit MP3 or WMA. AAC+ and OGG have limitations when using a SB product. Nor are the SB products capable of utilizing the advantages of MP3Pro as far as I know. IMHO a 96k MP3 stream from a properly ripped song and properly delivered from a decent stream provider is about equal to FM. YMMV. :) I've never heard a 64k (or less) stream that I felt was as good as a decent FM broadcast, but then I rarely listen to terrestrial radio anymore. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61901 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Question about bridging
Got it. It took a few tries, but now it does connect using the IP that the router had assigned to my "server", via the ethernet. I can now remote connect to the headless server in the basement, via wifi using any other PC in the house. Thanks for the help guys! -- mcgsxr mcgsxr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4543 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Question about bridging
OK, this is tough to do with no monitor attached, and I cannot bring a monitor to the PC. When the music PC is brought upstairs, and attached via ethernet to my router, it is assigned an IP. When the PC is then turned off, and taken to the basement, and no longer attached to the router, I think the IP changes. Does that make sense? If I ipconfig it while attached to the router, it shows an IP that is part of my wifi range. If I ipconfig it when not attached to the router (but still upstairs and with a monitor and keyboard) it shows a different IP. I assume that I should enter the different IP address when downstairs, and looking for Squeezecenter? I might be able to attach a laptop with the crossover cable, and verify the IP when the PC is in the basement, that should help clear this up. Thanks for your help so far guys, this is by far the most complex setup I have tried in the 4 years of SB3 ownership - I have used straight wired, and wireless in the past, but with the new dedicated PC, I want to leverage the wireless bridge so I can view the PC. -- mcgsxr mcgsxr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4543 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Playlists grow extra arms and legs...
Just to demonstrate, here's on of my long playlists I cleaned out the other day. Now all songs appear at least twice if not three times. I opened it in Foobar because you cant see the dups easily in th elittle bit of space that SC allows. -- Howard Passman Can I go home now? Every time I play one of those playlists, it adds duplicates. Odd thing is, I haven't seen the behavior in the shorter lists. Yep, the paths are the same. Anyone?? [slim] MusicIP How To
Hi All, I have set up MusicIP in headless mode on a W2K3 server and configured it in the SqueezeCenter. I have spent time looking for instructions about how to use it but I am jiggered if I can workout how to create a playlist. Is there a how to out there? [slim] Combining two filestore trees
Prompted by the '2 file locations' thread in the Boom forum (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61888), and not wanting to hijack that thread, I'd like to ask for advice on merging two separate filestore trees so that they appear to be one tree in the SC 'Music Folder' I'm running SC on a Windows XP system, and have my filestore separated into a 'Lossless' tree and a 'Lossy' tree. Within each tree I have subfolders for each letter of the alphabet, so I have: +Lossless --a ABC Aztec Camera --b --c --... +Lossy --a Aerosmith --b --c -- When I navigate to my Music Folder on a Squeezebox, I obviously see the two separate trees, and need to navigate into one or the other to see the separate alphabet structure. It seems that I can use Windows shortcuts to combine these trees, but I'm not sure how to do this. Ideally I'd like the root of my 'Music Folder' to appear to have a single alphabet tree. Do I need to create a master alphabet structure, and then create shortcuts for all the artists beginning with 'a' in the 'a' branch, then all the 'b' artists in 'b' etc, or is there a simpler approach? The problem seems to me to be that if I have, say, some albums by The Beatles in Lossless and some in Lossy, then I can't see how they will ever appear to be in the same location, unless I use shortcuts for every single artist. Is there a good way to automate the maintenance of this? -- chill chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61905 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well, that's the weirdest thing. I make loads of playlists over 20 songs and I've *never* had anything like this happen to me. Are the paths to the duplicates the same? I was wondering what internet radio broadcast bitrate is equivelent to FM? When the internet radio reports 24 bit MP3 is that the same as a 24 bit MP3 file? Well see mine is 12 months now :) the hardware quality on any consumer computer stuff ? who knows I think a large portion of any consumer pc hardware is duds, I buy a new one when that day arrives (it is cheap ) . A word of caution the third party fw makes it easy to crank up the radio signal default is 41mW I use 84mW now but it is possible to use 200mW that could actually lead to stronger signal but more noise ? and actually toast the radio chip in the long run. I used 200mW for a long time before I read somewhere that more than 100mW is risky for WRT54GL hardware. maybe one should fork up the cash for a pro router/access point next time and be done with it. When you are at a hotel or office ,they manage to flood a whole floor with wifi quite easily. -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61869 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
