No, its called a power amplifier.

But, as you will see below I use an SB3 with an external DAC that has a
simple potentiometer as a volume control. The DAC acts as the control
amp.

All resets done, and no joy. Same symptoms--looks like it's playing but
no MP3s are working [I've tried it with some 128k MP3s too to no avail.]
Logs attached again. I'd love to get this working again without having
to downgrade all the way back to 6.5.1, particularly if it's actually a
firmware problem [since I don't see how a change in SC version would do
anything to fix that. As I mentioned before, the server and SoftSqueeze
both appear to be doing all the stuff they should normally do with these
files...It does worry me that the Boom I've had my eye on to replace
this SB2 as my daily alarm clock will have this same problem]

I'd be happy to do a reset of the player (though I assume it will just

I can't post the streams at the moment, sorry [but the local MP3
failure is far more important to me]. Attached is the log for examples
of a few mp3 files that previously worked but no longer do. Forgive the
ridiculous length but I turned all the player debug info on.

The file attached is the player log.

Additional lines from the server logs surely seem like everything is
playing, but there's absolutely no sound and no indication on the player
that the file is actually playing ["Now Playing" shows file as playing,

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought of those things for this
particular product.

Headphone out: I can see where some folks might miss that not being
there.

Analog in: That makes sense to me on the Boom. What would be the point
here? (..other than in applications where one is not using a pre-amp.)

I guess my question is this: could a Transporter 2 maintain its
audiophile cred with the extra circuitry inside the box necessary to
support those features?

Volume control using the knob: Am I missing something here? This works
on my Transporter now. Granted, you have to hit the "volume" button on
the right first, but the knob then takes over. I assume that fixing
that so as to dispense with the need for the initial vol button push
would just be a SC software change...maybe not even a firmware change.
I wouldn't mind at all seeing that fix.

Makes me wonder what incentive they'd have to offer licenses. They're a
hardware company, I'd think it's far more profitable to bundle the
software/know-how with hardware.

Notwithstanding what a lot of people here think, the software isn't
"free". Neither to develop nor to use with the hardware.

PS - it'll be interesting to see more details of the new hardware.

Re: [slim] Problems with player pausing.

2009-06-22 Thread lemmy999

I don't think signal quality is even an issue. It is the inability of
the SB to recover from a wifi problem. I don't mind cut outs at all. I
actually expect it. And as I have posted already in this thread, I had
this problem when I had 95% signal quality in the same room. The Boom
has 65% signal quality and has the same problem. It makes no difference
if it is flac or mp3 and signal quality makes no difference. When I had
15-20% signal quality and the SB3 was handling the wifi, I had all kinds
of cutouts (as expected) and rebuffering, but it always would recover
and keep playing. This is different, it is a permanent stop that lasts
for ever and the server does not seem to be what is locked up (this has
also happened with 2 different routers and every build of server
software from about 6.53 to the current versions.

So, the answer is no. You purchased a Slim device, and the only way it

There is a UPnP client built into SqueezeCenter that is disabled by
default.

MeSue described its location as follows:
> From the webUI, go to Settings > Advanced (tab) >
> Network (pull down menu). It's the last item on the page labeled "UPnP

I have enabled mine, but I have issues with it timing out while reading
long lists of available metadata from the server. It doesn't seem to get
much attention from the developers anymore.

It streams the title of the main window in the application that it is
wrapping. If it's not working it means that either SqueezeCenter is
doing something differently (I did only test the metadata-support with
Winamp before releasing and don't have access to proper SB hardware
right now), or the primitive HTTP server is not parsing the header
properly.

I'm working on some improvements and I'll put this on the list to be

Yeah, WiFi certainly seems the culprit here, and not a big shocker with
only a 35% signal. :(
I can tell you I can stream FLAC without issue, but that's with a 78%
signal strength. I've even seen posts in here of people streaming FLAC
using a double-hop WiFi setup (player and PC both using WiFi), but again
I'm sure their signal strength is quite good.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised you have so few interruptions
streaming FLAC with only a 35% signal. Maybe one or two song cut outs
per day is about as good as it can get with your current setup.

Maybe getting a WiFi repeater? Using DD-WRT or Tomato FW to boost your
signal? Powerline Adapters (this would be my choice in your situation)?

Yep. They're low sampling rate files (including lots at 32k). That
said, they've worked in the past. It's only since the upgrade to 7.x
that I've had problems.

Only, if you tell me, how "intuitive" looks like.
It's not like it INTENTIONALLY made it un-intuitive

As I said: I'm seriously interested to learn what could be improved.
Yet a simple "it's not intuitive" doesn't really help a lot if I don't
even know WHAT is not intuitive.

The one point you mention (not being able to get back from NowPlaying
to browse menus) has been an issue of long debate during the first beta
phase and so far nobody came up with a solution that would not make
something else un-intuitive.
I was really into dropping the horizontal scrolling on NowPlaying for
1.2 yet the alternatives (more buttons, a button press before you can
switch pages, hierarchical pages) weren't too cool either. So for now
I've got more comments from my beta testers suggesting to leave it as it
is than to change it.
The full proposal about the new design is here:
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/wiki/NowPlaying

Right now, if you update to 3.0 you get another variant, which may be
quite straightforward: you can't swipe to get to NowPlaying anymore, so
you just have the subpages on NowPlaying and you have to switch between
NP and the main (browse) menu using the buttons in the Navigation Bar.
Is this better?

So yes: suggestions welcome.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox receiver + NAS + iPhone

2009-06-22 Thread melomania

I have no problems learning something new.
Especially when it saves met time later.

The problem is that my wife and kids want to use it too.
They will use it much less. So they should be able to use it without a
learning curve.

I think it would be great if it just works intuitive and besides that
you can do things much more quickly when you want to learn how to do
it.

I hope my feedback will result in a even beter product ;-)

Re: [slim] New "Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch" spotted !!

2009-06-22 Thread sleepysurf

Here's an interesting idea. Why not LICENSE the Squeezebox/Transporter
technology to high-end manufacturers to integrate into their line of
preamps (kinda like how Audyssey is being implemented in mid-fi
receivers). It would be awesome to see Squeezebox/Transporter
capability included with, for example, the Modwright line, Cary Audio,
McIntosh, many others.

I suspect it would be a LOT cheaper for those manufacturers to license
the technology rather than develop a similar (competing) platform
in-house. That would also guarantee Logitech a much broader
marketshare, and long-term viability, for the "Squeeze" platform.

My "ideal" Squeeze/Transporter product would be one truly designed as a
high-end preamp, with easy switching to other sources, SET and balanced
outputs, 24/192 capability, and home theater bypass.

Because good that the Transporter sound, it is still a distance from
the Naim CD players when played in a Naim system. It is hard to
describe, the Naim just have more PRat.

Why Transporter 2.0? Well I would give them the right of first refusal
since they brought me to distributed audio in the first place. And they
tend to cost much less than my favorite hifi brand.

Re: [slim] New "Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch" spotted !!

2009-06-22 Thread agentsmith

I am seriously thinking of upgrading from Transporter to Linn/Naim
solutions. If there is a Transporter 2.0 in the works, I will hold off
until the new one comes out.

Any clue?

I agree but it happens all of the time. I generally try and find
manufacturers that provide retro-fit upgrades for this very reason.
Sadly not all do or can.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
SB3 (wired) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Blue
Jeans Digital,Kimber Speaker & Chord Interconnect cables

But then... why would anyone need it? There's been no change since the
7.3.3 release :)

Re: [slim] SC7.3.3: how native AAC support is?

2009-06-22 Thread sebp

Thanks for supporting, newy, I was wondering whether I hallucinated.
I'm pretty sure the word native was earlier used in lieu of built-in in
the announcement title itself...

Maybe that's just because the 'french version'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64561) of the
announcement MickeyG (nicely) wrote, uses the word "natif" everywhere
(instead of "intégré").

I don't care myself, since I don't use AAC files, but was trying to
help somebody who does, and didn't understand...
