Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-18 Thread awy

Here is a copy of a comment I posted in bug 13092:

Bug 9517 meant that, prior to 7.3 (SB fw 117, TR fw 67, SBR fw 52, SBB
 fw 37),
FLAC playback was almost incapable of generating the necessary underrun
 events
to provoke rebuffering. There may have been gappy playback but no
 rebuffering would have occurred.

It is possible that there is some other f/w bug that means that
underrun events are now being generated unnecessarily, in turn provoking
rebuffering when it is not needed.

I was responsible for the new-streaming work in SC 7.3. Although a lot
of code changed, I cannot think of anything that would impede the
streaming of local FLAC tracks. I have been over the code several
times.

It is clear that some people are seeing issues that were not there
before. Despite significant investigations, we are no closer to
understanding why. If you are in a position to provide useful diagnostic
information (for local FLAC tracks only) then please do so in
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13092

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-18 Thread Pascal Hibon

This issue is not related to FLAC streaming only. I stream WAV and I
also experienced the issue with 7.3.3. For now I went back to 7.2.1. and
that works fine. I guess it is fair to say that the issue is more likely
to occur when streaming larger audio formats (lossless).

I noticed that the streaming generates a relatively constant data flow
on the network. Near the end of a song, the dataflow becomes more
important. On a 10Mb network, the load went up to 30% which is
significant. This was measured with only one SB3 streaming audio. On a
100Mb this will drop down of course. But nevertheless, streaming
generates an important amount of data packets on the network. It is
therefore very much possible that some people may run into issues if
they already have a busy network. In a cabled environment this is very
easy to solve by upgrading to a gigabit backbone. Gigabit networks can
even use jumbo frames if required and that will benefit the network
traffic even further. But wireless is a different story. Since an Access
Point is a bridge, it will bridge all cabled traffic to the wireless
(and vice versa) putting a lot of load on the wireless network if the
cabled network is busy.

It might be wise to try and find ways to decrease the traffic generated
by the streaming protocol. One way of doing that is to use a larger
buffer in the players. A larger buffer would give the player more
“stream ahead” room and this would decrease the possibility of running
out of buffer. But I don’t know if that is possible in the current line
of players (hardware wise).

In any case, there is a difference between the streaming of SC 7.3.3.
and SC 7.2.1. By knowing this, it should be fairly easy to compare the
traffic generated between those two versions and find a solution to the
issue. In order to debug an issue like this, you’ll need to use a
network sniffer. Microsoft provides one for free here:

MySQL to SQLite, but a few years ago (back around 2005/6) SlimServer
went the other way: switched from SQLite to MySQL. I reckon there must
have been very good reasons to make that switch at the time.

What were those reasons, and why are they no longer pertinent?

automatically ticks back to off. But, I hope there is something a bit
 more elegant.

If you have 6 SB3s you could use the IRBlaster plugin and the earphone
out to control the amps. I only have 2 and I have then setup to turn
on/off the amp as I turn them on/off. This works whether you turn
on/off the SB3 with remote, phone, PC or whatever. I'm assuming the amps
have IR remotes. You could also then control the volume of the amp with
the SB3.

I would suggest that you need less controllers as unless you are 6
people you could switch between players with one controller. Also with
SB3 you get a simple IR remote as well.

IRBlaster is not available on the Duet receivers as they don't have the
earphone out (I think).

I'm sure you would find the plugin to switch out the outside SB3 after
some amount of time, or just use the sleep timer.

My music library is on a WHS machine, and I've mapped the Music share

I have Moose running on the same machine, and that has no problems

Any ideas??

Over here in Switzerland if you use Cablecom (Cable Internet) your IP
only changes if you unplug your router (Or a digger severs the main

I put the feature request in the bug tracking system a lng time

also tried static ip and dhcp reservation with same results

The only thing I can see being different from what I had been doing is

Most average joes I know (and I'm one too) don't have or use NASes.
When they do, it's for storage, not for running apps. Has someone really
convinced themselves that this deserves a development focus?

Honestly, you ought to go over and cruise the Sonos forums sometimes.
One of the things they beat into the ground constantly is that the Sonos
can work with just a NAS, doesn't need a server (like a NAS doesn't have
a processor). So, apparently hitting that point where you can have a
NAS with no supported computer is useful.

These comments contradict one another - which is it? Or maybe the
smaller format focus is for unreleased self-contained products and so
won't be commented on at this time?

I fail to see how they contradict each other. SQLLite integrates into
SqueezeCenter, which gives you an all-in-one package. No external MySQL
to have to worry about. That simplifies it for Joe Sixpack. At the
same time, it also reduces the memory footprint, and hopefully the CPU
needs, which makes in more amenable to a low-powered machine, such as a
NAS. Seems like a win all-around to me.

7.3 has been very good to me. 7.4, not so much, but then I usually avoid
running the betas anywhere other than my development system until public

things are headed. I think communicating plans and documenting APIs has
always been an area that could stand improvement, but look at the
competition -- closed development, and zero support for 3rd-party
enhancements. I'm confident we're still pretty lucky to have the Slim
 Devices folks running this enterprise.

For me the lack of communication and lack of documentation is the
biggest problem as a third party developer. However, as you say, if you
compare with other companies performing closed source development,
Logitech (formerly Slim Devices) is far far ahead of the competition
IMHO. The idea of helping Microsoft or Apple with development on my
spare time has never crossed my mind.

Changing API's isn't a major problem for developers that are active in
the community, the problem is for all previously written plugins that
stop working because they aren't maintained anymore and the original
developer isn't around anymore.

I'm still worried regarding the lack of communication, there were a lot
more communication with third party developers a few years back compared
to today. I haven't lost the hope yet, but I fear that the development
community might disappear unless something changes. Back in 2006 you
pretty much knew someone would answer if you posted in the Developers
section of the forum, now I'm often pretty sure no one is going to
answer if I post something else than simple questions there.

However, I also understand the reasons. It takes time and effort to
communicate with the third party developers and if you need to
prioritize between fixing a bug to reach a release date or help a third
party developer the prioritization is pretty easy. Most employees tends
to prioritize the person paying your salary instead of someone that
wants you to do something for free.

I think the problem with the lack of communication is that most third
party developers is involved because it's fun and they feel they are
part of something. If there isn't any communication, it doesn't feel
like you are part of something and the result is that it isn't as fun as
it used to be.

Well, you can't blame Logitech for this.

They provide the database abstraction layer because it contained all
functionality they needed for the server implementation. You can't
really expect them to make an abstraction layer to cover every possible
usage.

It also contains all functionality that I would need in my plugins if I
had implemented them the correct way. However, I selected the quick and
dirty path to get something out that worked and solved the problem,
instead of making the proper solution to invent and implement my own
query language for smart playlists. The reason I selected the quick path
was that I do this on my spare time and it would take too much time to
do the proper solution.

Generally speaking, changes in the perl code has always caused a lot
more problems in my plugins than changes in the database engine. This
was the situation during the last SQLite-MySQL switch back in 2006 and
the current MySQL-SQLite-MySQL switch.

As a database engine it's a lot better than it was back in 2006 (when I
think the MySQL switch was). I remember it had problem running more
complex SQL statements back in 2006 but now the same statements works
perfectly in the current SQLite version. The only thing I had to change
to make the SQL statements in my plugins to work in SQLite in 7.4 was
some MySQL specific functions and some joined UPDATE statements.

2009-08-18 Thread Aurumer

Normaly most people in forums write about their problems. So something
from the other side...

I got a brand new transporter a few weeks ago. Very nice, very good
sound but now and then some problems with noise form the transnav knob.
It often degausses and makes some ticking and clicking. So I wrote to
support to ask if there is a workaround or firmware update or something
else to get things better. We mailed some times in both direction and
the support decided to replace the unit.
This was the timeline: One week until I could send my transporter to
Logitech and at the end of the next week I got a new unit.

So here I am, very happy with a grave quiet and very good sounding new
transporter.

Big compliments to Logitech for this fast and uncomplicated help from a
satisfied customer!

Regards
Aurumer

[slim] RedEye universal remote control?

2009-08-18 Thread GRC

Although I have a Controller, I have been interested in the iPhone apps
for controlling the SB devices.

However, I have also been toying with the idea of a universal remote
for all my other IR-controlled gear.

I've recently come across the RedEye universal controller at
http://thinkflood.com/products/redeye/what-is-redeye/ which is based on
an iPod Touch or iPhone. Seems that this could be a single platform for
IR and wireless control. Looks interesting!

Anyone had any experience with this product?

You mean on the router level?
It seems like an easy to do feature. Many routers have this now...

On SqueezeCentre (the web thingy) go to settings, advanced, security.
Here you can then set your SqueezeCentre to block incoming connections
(by changing do not block to block) and then allow specific IP
addresses. You would need to allow your local IP range (i.e. IPs in
your home network) and the IP of your office computer. Click on the [i]
next to the Allowed IP Addresses input box for info how to enter ranges
and multiple IPs.

You could then remove the password. This will only be useful if your
work/office IP does not change.

Re: [slim] How to do whole house audio (multi-room, multi-source)?

2009-08-18 Thread rcstevensonaz

peterw;449340 Wrote:
You say it's multi-source, but it sounds like a Squeezebox-only setup,
right? If so, then your Audiosource plan sounds fine.

So far, that approach is easiest solution I have available right now.
It means that I only have a single source per room (which may be OK
since Squeezebox can access all my stored music as well as Internet
Radio and Sirius). Due to the open floor plan that we have in our
house, several rooms logically need to have the same music source, so I
can probably control all 6 rooms with just 3 Squeezebox controllers.

peterw;449340 Wrote:
Most of us would recommend that you put each Receiver and amp in the
same room as the speakers -- long digital ethernet runs, short speaker
 cables.

I have dedicated systems in two rooms we use for home theater /
critical listening. Those rooms each have a SB3 Classic.

For the rest of the house, the goal is to get the equipment out of the
rooms and into a central wire closet. From that room, I am running 12
guage, four conductor speaker wire to the other rooms. Run lengths are
15' to 25' with one room at 45'. (Wire is kept away from electrical as
much as possible; with 90 degrees crossing)

peterw;449340 Wrote:
If you want the ability to play multiple sources, then you could look at
a multizone receiver (Aesculus has a plugin for more expensive
ethernet-equipped Denon amps; I have an alpha-quality one for cheaper
RS232-equipped Denon amps; both allow Controllers to set the amp volume,
turn the amp off, etc.), or having a receiver/preamp feed an audio input
on your SqueezeCenter host so you could stream miscellaneous audio
 sources as 320k MP3.

Thanks, I'll look up Aescules -- that is a new vendor I had not heard
of.

peterw;449340 Wrote:
AllQuiet won't help you if all you have are Duets/Receivers, as it
currently is only usable with IR-equipped players (Classic, Boom,
Transporter). If all your players are synced, then the Pause button is
 good enough. :-) Otherwise I could write a Controller/SqueezePlay
interface for AllQuiet and you'd have to do something like Home scroll
to All Quiet press center button. Would that be worthwhile for you?
Another option that I could work up pretty easily would be letting you
customize what happens when you press the button on the front of a
Receiver, so pressing the button on any Squeezebox Receiver would
 silence all the Squeezeboxes.

Interesting ideas for customizing the Squeezebox controls. If I wind
up with a system of multiple Squeezebox controlers, I will cycle back
with you to explore these ideas.

Thanks for the input.

[slim] Musicip quit working...What to check?

2009-08-18 Thread Bert57

Have been using musicip headless for about a year and it has
mysteriously stopped working.

Where should I start to find a solution? So far I have checked
services and it shows musicipstarted. Have also made sure that musicip
is checked in settings. Beyond that I have no idea what to check.
Thanks for any help.

Re: [slim] Musicip quit working...What to check?

2009-08-18 Thread maggior

How is it that it is not working? Are you no longer seeing the option
to create an IP mix in the squeezebox UI? Are you trying to generate
mixes but they are coming up empty?

Has anything changed in your environment such as you firewall? Is the
port used by MusicIP suddenly being blocked?

You mention service, so I assume you are talking about Windows. Are
you sure that MusicIP and SqueezeCenter are starting up in the correct
order?

Sorry for all of the questions, but we'll need more info to try to help

Well, you can't blame Logitech for this.

They provide the database abstraction layer because it contained all
functionality they needed for the server implementation. You can't
really expect them to make an abstraction layer to cover every possible
 usage.

Oh, no I don't blame them at all.. your plugins are almost by nature
going to push the edge of any sort of schema/backend. If only SQL were
a real standard, it would be trivial to use
MySQL/SQLite/Postgres/Oracle/DB2/whatever. Yeah, just use this DB
connector and you're done!

But, alas, it's not.

Didn't mean it as a criticism of your appreciated work, just the yeah
db backends change, and just like the bug 6.5 change, lots of things
broke dejavu'ishness of it all.

I survived back then (and was happy to switch to MySQL), and even if
MySQL support is dropped, I'd still survive (but would have to fiddle
with some PHP code I have to list albums.. oh, well).

And the joys of different ways to do 'RANDOM' order by clauses.

SQLite performance on low end hardware is apparently a TON faster than
MySQL on the same hardware. On more expensive hardware, I think the
difference is less, but if it stops the neverending why do I get 'cant
write to *.MYI' errors from dumb Antivirus software, that's a huge
bonus as well.

The backend db for anything (whether it is SC/SBServer/SS/whatever) is
almost always a religious issue.

For sure. And the vendors of the DBMS love to sucker you into using
their special extra cool feature.

Writing code to transparently swap between two packages is not all that
hard, but once you start into the religion of independent backend
packages, it becomes actually hard.

Did you make the right settings in the ACC Remote Server Options
screen?

Since you're using Moose, I would guess that you have already modified
the my.tt file on the WHS server to allow Moose to remotely access the
database.

If not, then the problem is that by default the MySQL database that is
installed with SC does not allow access from a remote machine. Read the
pre-requirement message at the top of the ACC remote server options
screen. It should provide enough information (or else the Help screen).
You need to modif the my.tt textfile using notepad and comment out a
line in the file by placing a '#' character in front of the bind address
line in the file. Then restart MySQL (or your server) and your set...

Excellent point. One good approach to improve your chance to get an answer
is to keep postings short and clear. Also in some of the forums it's
almost impossible to keep up with the discussions. Good ideas go lost in
the noise of useless postings. Sometimes it might be worth to restart a
new thread if in posting #938 of a thread there really is some important,
new information. I keep to skip threads based on their subjects after I've
found the first couple of postings unimportant or not interesting for me.

OK! Almost there . . .

The connection looks OK.

I now get error opening text file:

Err.number 62. Input past end of file.

At the moment I'm just running ACC from a desktop folder.

Aesculus (Chris) is another forum user. You can learn more about his

My DenonSerial plugin is in testing phase and is available for
SqueezeCenter 7.3 with my test repository,
http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml . I've used it
for weeks at home, and it offers much the same feature set as Aesculus'
plugin (turn amp on/off with Squeezebox, multizone support), with the
caveat that you need to have a serial cable between the SqueezeCenter
server and amp or a telnet serial server like the $80 Sena LS100 (though
I have not fully tested the serial server capabilities, as I don't have
one myself). When I'm closer to officially releasing mine, I'll put
together a web page describing it; meanwhile, let me know if you have
any questions. All the features are listed on the per-player settings
pages.

The main feature I have yet to add is a user interface (for
Classic/Boom/Transporter IR remotes and the Controller) to allow you to
select the input source for each zone (mine associates a given player
with a certain zone on a certain amp; while the Denon will let you feed
multiple zones with a single source, my target has been 1:1
zone-player mappings, as I think that makes the most sense in *most*
Squeezebox setups. I intend to have the input selection feature allow
you to assign custom names to each input, using longer strings than
Denon allows for the onscreen display (my 09 receiver won't allow the
full word Squeezebox, for instance).

Provided you have the latest version of Squeezecentre installed,
Squeezebox Classic, Duet and Boom will play 24/96 files by downsampled
to 24/48. It would be difficultto hear the difference, even on a very
 good audio system.
I think the answer is a big maybe. You would have to have the right
system and very good ears and then maybe.

I've downloaded some albums from HDTracks, in both redbook and 24/96
formats. After volume matching them, the 24/96 tracks (even when
downsampled to 24/48) are audibly and musically superior. No doubt in
-my- mind! Granted, I do have a -very- revealing setup.

If the Touch digital end proves as capable as the Squeezebox 2/3, I'll
be a very happy camper. If, however, they have skimped on
components/design to go after the mid-fi consumer market, I, for one,
will be -extremely- disappointed, and would likely jump ship for a
higher-end manufacturer.

I have no experience with the FCC, and didn't waste any time with your
cryptic comment, but normally if an agency requires that a
confidentiality agreement be time-limited, usually it's one of two
things. Either there is a maximum period they'll allow OR the applicant
puts down what they figure would be worst case requirement.

If that's the case here, then the date you cite would not be meaningful
for this game of speculation. This company, any company, wants to start
selling any new product absolutely as soon as possible. One day sooner
is better than one day later. So don't underestimate their urgency.

I know, I suspect long posts sometimes tends to be ignored because no

many small threads instead of describing the whole problem in one
thread, but I suppose it might be worth a try.

Strangely enough, it often feels like the section that I personally get
least responses in is the Developers section which definitely doesn't
contain a lot of useless postings IMHO. Of course, I really don't expect
someone from Logitech answer a thread in the General section of the
forum but I do expect them to answer stuff posted in the Developers
section.

Sometimes it really better to post a stupid answer like We currently
have no one that has the time to answer this, please get back in a few
weeks instead of just leaving the thread unanswered. This way the
poster at least know that there is a reason why no one answers his/her
questions instead of getting the feeling that no one is even reading
his/hers thread.

The Ubuntu community forum have handled this pretty good by making it
easier to find unanswered threads and assigning some forum members with
the responsibility to make sure everyone posting a new thread gets some
kind of answer or indication where to search further for the
information. (No I'm not a volunteer)

It also has to be said that IMHO Logitech employees are often very good
at giving feedback on things in the beta related forum sections.

One thing that I've sometimes missed is a way to communicate with
Logitech regarding non development stuff. For development stuff it's
pretty clear that the Developers section should be used but for non
developer stuff I currenlty have to use the General section where the
posting easily could be lost among all the other thread. Some samples of
this are questions/comments regarding the Logitech web site or the forum
software/structure.

Yes, making it possible to hide the stuff you don't use would be a good
idea.

You could register an enhancement request at

Re: [slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?

2009-08-18 Thread Mnyb

my 2c/

If I'm going to volunteer some time to beta testing, the beta has to be
somewhat functional as I only have one server/image no special test
system to play around with.
This has been the norm for the last 2 years, the dev's have been slowly
introducing new things bugs get found and sorted, nice work flow an
everyman can participate as Guinea-pig/crash test dummy without to much
hassle .

Migration and preservation of settings/database MUST work.
It also must work when downgrading.
Why ? If it's getting to much you must have a clean retreat route to
run and hide a while when the beta is to unstable ;-)
For now I upgraded myself to a tight spot where I'm sure either a up or
down grade would blow my settings and require a clean install, the icing
is the controller upgrade witch forces me to do something about it.

No more Déjà vu bugs, it's sometimes looks like a zombie movie here,
old bugs are resurrected from the dead quite often.
Volunteer's tire quickly if their bug is found and fixed and then
reappears 6 months later.
This leads to the conclusion that there is very little rudimentary
testing at all before releasing a software ? How is it possible to miss
that password protection is not working or that the power off function
is gone, or that dhcp is malfunctioning or that dns resolving is broken
or non A-Z characters is causing trouble again, easy nobody bothered to
try ;)

My absolute favorite in this genre ( why test it should work.. ) was
the release of the duet:
Password protected squeezecenter did not work.
Hidden SSID did not work.
Setting up on a network with no DHCP did not work.
No easy way to configure fixed ip's (turning on said dhcp made this
impossible ), when actually fixed ip's is the only stable way to run
your Squeezeboxes ? No more can't find.. or blue lights when both server
ip and dns is hardcoded into the device eh.
No roaming ? basically large parts of normal network functionality was
missing in a release , this was all clear to me after using the product
for 30 minutes o pro would have seen this in 5 ? I'm unsure of it's
now.

Point, if an average joe with no programing skills can poke holes in
software in 5 minutes, it can not have been tested properly.

/2c

Anyway keep up the good work, but a more structured less chaotic way of
working would benefit us all i think.
I will still be testing betas for the fun of it.

And now i think the 7.3.4 is very good so they eventually got there
almost a year after the release of the duet, so for fuzz free
squeezeserver I would use 7.3.4 . Or if possible one the pre sqlite 7.4
beta's which where better, but they to would probably force you to
upgrade the controller. I think that the development peaked in the pre
sqlite 7.4, that was golden
