Re: [slim] HowTo: Prevent server from suspend/hibernate while Squeezecenter playing?

2009-09-25 Thread pablolie

There are issues, and the Ubuntu forums are full of threads , search
for
sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol g
...and perhaps that is all you need. Note you'll seemingly have to do
it every time you restart, there are known issues with 9.04 network
manager...

In my newest creation it works but the result isn't pretty. You have to
not once, but twice tell the player to reconnect to squeezecenter.

In fact it is home servers' rather inconsistent sleep behavior, both in
Ubuntu and Vista, that lead me to no configure a dedicated
Squeeezecenter server, which at worst consumes 26W peak and thus can be
kept on... a decision that was not quite as defensible with a 170W
server...

[slim] Sad news: Jim Thiel has passed away

2009-09-25 Thread iPhone

It is with great sadness that I post that Jim Thiel has lost his battle
against cancer.

Jim Thiel of Thiel Audio was a man those main passion was advancing the
state of art in loudspeaker design that was elegant as well as
affordable while still pushing to meet his goal of the most life like
audio reproduction possible.

I am better for having known him, using his creations, and having
spirited audio discussions. I first meet Jim almost 30 years ago when
Kathy and he visited the the high end audio shop I repaired gear for. I
enjoyed his passion for speakers and began selling them after buying my
first pair.

Jim will be missed and I for one am glad he was able to see his final
design with the Thiel CS 3.7 have such seccess and recieve the awards
and reviews it and he deserve.

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2009-09-25 Thread amey01

Okay - everything looks great. Of course, what I have said before holds
(and I'm sure it's all on your list, so I won't reiterate) but here are
my notes on .996:

Installation (other than the uninstallation first glitch) was fine -
didn't have to re-register.

All functionality you mentioned is present and accounted for. Volume
control (with 100% there all the time (and not just when you use it) is
great!

Not sure if I mentioned before a couple of things:

Would be great if (perhaps at the top of the screen?) you could easily
jump between Now Playing, Playlist and the Library. It is a little
annoying having to constantly revert to the main screen and re-select.

Tips or captions on some of the buttons might help. Not sure though. I
got a little confused when trying to change players, but now I know it's
all good. Not sure if they would get in the way and spoil the interface
or not. Just to let you know and maybe think about it.

Regards,

I have been trying to figure out how to get this to work for a while and
have never found a good answer. Using the serverpowerctrl plugin is the
best solution I have been able to find, but it does not make the system
work as desired. I haven't found a sleep solution for ubuntu that will
monitor the system use (keyboard and mouse etc.) and squeezecenter use.
If anyone has one, I'd love to know about it.

I listen to Rhapsody a lot (practically every day) via two Duet
receivers and a Boom, and have recently noticed that I can't remember
the last time I've had trouble with wierd behavior, dropouts, or hangs.
This has been the case with both squeezecenter 7.3.4, and now more
recenty with 7.4. Thanks to everyone at Squeezebox for improving the
Rhapsody experience... it's been a real joy lately. By the way, the
Duet graphics with 7.4 are really cool...

2009-09-25 Thread flipside

Hi firstly thanks for this its been a great help as my setup has been
tempremental with the old squeezebox commands (though i havent fully
tested teh new ones yet)

As the people here seem to be the powers in the know i have a
question/request. Are there any plans to get some basic harmony stuff
into the Controller, power and volume would be great though if poss a
input switch command as well please.

As an adjunct to this one idea that came to mind is that having an
option inside Squeezecontroller/Squeezecentre to have a different amp
for each SB/Zone would be superb and a counter for the you dont have an
included amp comments i get from sonos owners :)

Thanks again

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) discontinued?

2009-09-25 Thread toby10

Well, the reason for the Touch LCD over SB3 VFD are many and varied:
- SB3 screen seems dated (though, like you, I love it)
- color screen, album and station art
- better Menu navigation (can see more than three lines)
- more "apps" can be utilized
- color & touch screen are where the market is going

Touch's text font is larger than the SB3 font using Touch's Proximity
and/or Large Text feature for reading the screen from further away than
the SB3 screen.

But, like any product, it isn't for everyone. :)

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) discontinued?

2009-09-25 Thread epoch1970

...and paid a fair price for it on Amazon, as a bonus.

I like a lot the embedded server in the Touch, but that's about it.
I don't understand the urge to use an LCD screen, this is not a video
device, it's about music.
Compared to the display panel on the Classic, the LCD, even of
exceptional quality, -and that would be a departure from the Controller
screen- won't be legible enough: no contrast and too small.
Besides, I have my daily dose of netbook, ipod, iphone, etc. I enjoy
SB3s because I can listen to music and forget the technicalities. The
Touch just tries to draw your attention to it.

I hope for the BU that the Touch is a success, technical and
commercial. For me, I am now set to skip a generation of products.

[slim] Number Assignment - Favourites

2009-09-25 Thread Labarum

I have just moved house and been offline a week. I had to reinstall
Squeezecentre - the latest 7.4 Nightly. All my Favourites are still
there and respond the the numbers assigned, but I cannot see the edit
boxes on the web interface.

Have I remembered correctly?

Clicking the edit pencil in Favourites should reveal an option to
reassign favourites - but I don't see it.

Am I looking in the wrong place, or is there a problem with nightly?

Looking at the new website, I tried to compare the Boom and the Radio,
using the "compare this" buttons:

Apparently the Boom has neither ethernet nor 802.11 wireless - Better
hurry home and pull out my network cable, then.

I wonder how the Boom is going to play any music with no network.

I'm a big fan of the Classic too, but the Touch works pretty well for
distance use. It has a proximity sensor so when you are up close it
uses a small sized font, and when you use a remote (and the proximity
sensor is not triggered) it uses a larger font. Easily usable from 5m
imho for selecting and playing music. Now Playing screen may need a bit
of work for distance use but it's not far off.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still interested in the Classic since it's a

Furthermore the display of the Classic is readable from a distance

Sorry to hear that it is being discontinued - but perhaps I'll be able

Yes, the rumors are true, and they'll be discontinued when the last one
is sold. I have the impression, but no hard information, that they
stopped production of the SB3/Classic earlier this year. If you can't
find any at Logitech's site you can probably still find some at other

Are the rumors true and when will this happen (I'd like to get 1 or 2
extra Classic's before it's too late).
Cheers, Tommy

The whole Squeezebox line seems to be an after thought.
They seem to be more about mice, keyboards, and speakers than SB.
If you didn't know about SB before, you would never find it on their

[slim] Internet connection drops

2009-09-25 Thread veragooner

My ADSL 2+ connection drops occasionally, maybe 6 times in 24 hours or
as much as 5 times in an hour. As you can imagine pretty annoying. By
the time the router has regained the connection the boom buffer, 30
secs, is empty, sometimes the radio will restart other times it is more
difficult.
My ISP wants to drop the down speed to 3MBp/s from 6, it was 10.

My questions are how many drops is acceptable per 24 hours?
Is there a router that is more tolerant of this sort of problem (my
ISP, telefonica in Spain, has changed mine 3 times)
Any other things I can try?

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-09-25 Thread bpa

At quick look at what is happening so it may be wrong.

It seems SC is ignoring the application/ogg MIME type and just using
the extension and has decided the stream is a Flac stream and not an OGG
stream and so the new rules is not applied.

Earlier version of SC used the MIME type application/ogg to trigger the
OGG-Flac rule.

Re: [slim] Many of my artist doesn't sort correctly

2009-09-25 Thread jasell

How should Various Artist be used to get the correct behavior?

I have several album from one Artist, lets say Depeche Mode (these Album
have not Various Artist tags or Compilation Tag set). Both "Album
Artist", "Band" and "Artist" is set to "Depeche Mode".

I then have some Mix or Favourite collections with several Artist in
one Album. These have the "Artist" tags set to Depche Mode (or the
artist applicable), the "Album artist" and "Band" is set to "Various
Artist" and "iTunes Compilation" is set to "true".

I want SC to sort Artist with Albums that are not Compilations in the
main listing (at the correct alphabetical order) and Compilations under
the special entry for Compilation (without showing the artist). Artist
that only appear in compilation albums should not be listed at all.

So is that possible?
What am I doing wrong here?

Yes. What is happening is that you have a "Various Artists" tag in the
files that are sorting incorectly, so they are all being sorted within
"V" (for "Various Artists").

You need to use a proper tool such as MP3Tag to sort out your Artist
tags.

Then you need to clear & rescan
There is no limit on the number of Artists.

The wireless transport protocol has zero effect on the fidelity or
features.

802.11n itself has nothing to do with the FCC, they don't get involved
with the communication standards, especially not in unlicensed bands.
All they do in the testing reports is make sure devices are not spewing
out masses of interference that they shouldn't be and all communications
are within that licensed or unlicensed band.

THAT is exactly the problem.
Multinational companies with big budgets for their web site ALWAYS do
these sucking flash sites.
The one I work for is no exception to that. I know a guy who did the
last relaunch and he said there simply was no way around flash. It has
to be all that, well, _flashy_, animated stuff and in the end they only
really test against IE anyway...
Oh: And it performs s well when you test these sites on the

Flash is good for cross browser video, and useful animation, but to use
it for static content shows a lack

Hi there

Unfortunately the hack doesn't work anymore with 7.4. Could one of the
pros give me a hint what I will have to change on these lines to make it
work again? D-dur in FLAC turned out to be my favored classical
station.

(I don't care if OGG files are not playable and all the OGG streams I'm
listening to are 48kHz.)

Code:

  ogg flc * *
  # R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 256 -af volume=0,channels=2
-ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent
--endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16 --sample-rate=48000
--compression-level-0 -

Thanks!

2009-09-25 Thread andynormancx

Oh dear, oh dear. As well as the massive chunk of Flash on the front
page there are some other unwelcome design choices.

When you get to the Squeezebox page, the page is so wide that it
doesn't fit on my browser window that is normally sized to fit 2/3 of my
1600 pixel wide monitor.

Also, you can't click on the nice big images of the products to open
their details pages. I expect a lot of users never to discover that they
can click on the name of the product to open the details page.

You can however drag the products around. WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE
WANT/NEED TO DO THAT ?

The site is now lousy to use on the iPhone, due to the big bit of
Flash, the extremely fiddly two stage drop down AND pop out menus and
the small click targets when there is a perfectly good and large image
that could be the click target.

Oh and it is slow too [-]

Rant over.

I hate websites with tons of Flash. I hate it in general, and more
recently, I've found that it is very, very difficult to get a 64 bit
Linux release to properly display Flash.

Neither Firefox 3.5 nor Google Chrome can get the plugin to work. Or at
least, I can't get the installation to work for either of them. I am
using Ubuntu 9.04 in the 64 bit version on my newest desktop computer --
mostly because I ordered it with 8GB of ram and with minor exceptions,
32 bit OS versions don't use (can't use?) more than 4GB.

In these days of bloated software and RAM being nearly free, it was
inexpensive, or perhaps even cheap, to get the system with 8GB of ram.

I consider myself a pretty serious geek, nearly 40 years of professional
software, a MS in Computer Science, 10+ computers in my house, and more
than five SqueezeBoxen.

I can't get Flash to work in a browser.

Massive Flash websites simply don't work at all for me.
