Trouble as in you don't like it or as in doesn't work? The latter

delivers a wrong sorting (happens with some releases and certain

Re: [slim] Transporter Bitrate Question

2010-06-16 Thread andynormancx

I'm no fan of iTunes, but it sounds like you really don't understand
what is happening here.

The volume control at the top of the iTunes window will have no effect
on the tags added to your files to indicate any volume levelling.

The bit rate lowering also has nothing to do with iTunes. That it
purely down to Squeezebox Server converting the audio to FLAC before
streaming it to the player. This is a perfectly sensible thing to do
(to reduce network usage) and the fact that it reports a lowered
bitrate doesn't mean you have lost anything, FLAC is completely
lossless, the same data will arrive at your player as was read from
your CD with iTunes.

I'd agree that dbPowerAmp is much better than iTunes at ripping, but
you are trying to blame iTunes for things that have nothing to do with
it.

[slim] Issue with new router and SB3

2010-06-16 Thread russelc

Hi - hope this is the correct forum for this post.

I have recently changed my router from an Orange Livebox to a D-Link
DSL-2740R and have successfully got everything (Wii, SB3, iPod Touch)
back up and running wirelessly having changed security from WEP to
WPA2. Orange remains my ISP for the next couple of months.

However, I have since noticed one annoying feature of my new
environment. In the past the SB3 would only show the message Can't
connect to server: ONCE ONLY when the server was shut down, went into
standbye or hibernation, or if wireless dropped. Now I have a situation
where when the server is off or in standbye or hibernation the message
is displayed every 5 minutes (I've timed it). It looks like something
is polling it at this interval.

I would rather it didn't do this as it is distracting when watching TV
(my SB3 is on same stand as TV). Any insights would be appreciated.

My setup is as follows;

Server = Win XP SP2 with Squeezebox Server version 7.5.0 r30464 (not
24/7)
D-Link DSL 2740R running firmware version UK_1.13. WPA2 enabled, with
firewall switched on (24/7)
SB3 firmware 130

OppfinnarJocke;555309 Wrote:

The main difference are that it supports browsing and searching,
including artwork in browse menus and search result provided by
Spotify. Browsing and searching is supported in web interface,
Controller/Radio/Touch, Classic/Boom/Transporter, iPeng.

It of course also supports skip forward/backware to next/previous song
and pause/play.

It streams 320kbps mp3 directly from Spotify, no recompression to MP3 a
second time using lame as I believe DSBridge has to do since it doesn't
support FLAC.

You can make playlists of Spotify tracks which you can select to play
directly on your Squeezebox without the need to go to a computer and
change the music as you have to with the DSBridge solution.

It doesn't need the Spotify PC/Mac client to be running since it
connect to the Spotify servers itself.

[slim] Voice Command for Squeezebox? Still Not Much Interest?

2010-06-16 Thread spedinfargo

After trying to train my primary customer (spouse) on the Squeezebox
with various interfaces (Presets on Radio, SB Controller, Ipeng) I keep
coming back to what I think would be a killer usability feature: Voice
Command for the Squeezebox platform.

I saw an old thread that someone had played around with this at one
point (2008) but haven't seen much about it recently. Anyone else
think that this would be a worthwhile feature?

I believe the new Iphones have something similar... we've all used
voice command to make phone calls on various platforms... Microsoft has
the Sync software in Ford vehicles. Voice Command works without
training lately, so it's something that could really be something easy
for users.

It doesn't even have to be too complicated - I'm looking for commands
like: Playlist Shane Favorites Random, Skip Track, Mute All,
Sync All Players, Play Artist Pink Floyd, Play Album Dark Side of
the Moon, etc.

For some simple and common commands, Voice Command would be much faster
than navigating menus, no matter how well presented those menus are.

In some threads like this, there's always someone that comes up with
examples of how a certain keyword in a song would cause undesired
behavior What if they say 'stop' in the song?? but on any of these
systems there is usually a button press or something similar that can
easily distinguish a command from normal background noise or music.

I think Voice Command continues to get better and better - someday I
would love to see some way to run Squeezebox this way...

Thoughts?

[slim] Squeezebox classic v.3 display turns off

2010-06-16 Thread dolce24

Hi forum helpers.

Last week something went wrong with my SB3. The display turns off while
music is playing, but the music keeps playing. There is no other way to
turn it on again except unlugging the power cable, and plug it back in.
I have of course tried using the brightness button, and now playing
button without success. I have the VU meter as scrensaver.

I have had the sb3 for 3 years and have never experienced this problem
before. I tried uninstalling squeezeserver 7.4 totally and installed
the new 7.5 but the problems still exist. After a couple of songs the
display turns off, and never comes back, and it is definanatly not a
loose connection, as i've tried to shake player. When the player is
turned of with time and date screensaver there is no problem. The
problem is only when i start the music, and sometimes when i scroll
through my music folder it turns off.

Could this be caused by a bad power supply? Except the display turn
off, everything is working fine, and i can use the web based
squeezecenter to change music.

I hope someone can help, or maybe someone had the same problem.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [slim] Voice Command for Squeezebox? Still Not Much Interest?

2010-06-16 Thread ModelCitizen

I'm right behind you.

For years I've found it incredible that we are have to use a stupidly
limited keyboard to communicate from an amazingly complex human brain
to an increasingly powerful computer. I've had my eyes on Dragon
Dictate since before it was released for Windows in 1997.
Unfortunately the promise of voice controlled computing power has still
not been realised 13 years later. But, the iPhone has re-enthused me. I
frequently use the iPhone and Google voice control to make telephone
calls, play music and search the web. And it works very well for me
(Southern English accent).

In another thread I've made the point that I think single-use dedicated
hardware controllers will soon become a thing of the past and that
increasingly people will own their own personal hand-held touch-screen
smart device (the iPhone leads the way) that they will use to control a
whole host of things.

Maybe a realistic option for Logitech is to release an iPhone and Droid
app that enables voices controls on these devices. I'm sure it's
possible but at this moment in time it would probably be a bit
bleeding edge for a company such as Logitech and require much more
resources than they have. However, it is pretty certain that voice
control will eventually be the way we control our personal smart
devices and the apps installed on them.

Next session I'll expound on the merging of silicon, nano-technology
and bio-technology and the amazing cyborg future this will almost
inevitably bring the human race. (Personally I can't wait).

It's not going to be perfect but using the first word (or two) as a
control word (e.g. play album) and the following words to define the
object (track/album/artist) could work. Perhaps a slightly longer gap
between control and object words might be required. I can't see that
this would be too hard for most people to grasp. Don't talk fast.

[slim] Logitech 30 Day Trial - Any Way to Get Them to Honour It?

2010-06-16 Thread rbz5416

Having given up trying to get the Touch to perform as it should, I
notified Logitech that I would like to return it under their 30 day
trial. This request (to logitechbuy...@techprotect.de) has been ignored
as have subsequent e-mails. Anyone have any alternate contacts?

As a warning, you may want to think twice about trialling Logitech
products under this offer as at the moment, it seems to be
non-existent. :(

Logitech Squeezebox Customer Support's number is 877-887-8889. From the
email address you listed, it appears you're in Germany. Not sure what
their number is but MAYBE the US Customer Support could steer you in
the right direction. Good luck.

Thanks.

I'm in the UK but the German e-mail address is where the registration
for the trial goes. I've fired off a support ticket but just wondered
if anyone had successfully returned a trial product from the UK.

Re: [slim] Receiver not connecting

2010-06-16 Thread united59

Your are not the only one having trouble with this, lately. See the Duet
section of the forum. In short, most common solutions/workarounds have
been downgrading Squeezeboxserver (and promting an older version of the
controller's firmware) or use the Udap-Net configuration tool).

I suspect there is a bug in SBS 7.5.x.

Re: [slim] Receiver not connecting

2010-06-16 Thread Ron Olsen

I ran into this problem when running a 7.5.1 nightly with the r8847 Duet
Controller firmware. I suspect it is also an issue with the official
7.5.1 and the r8837 controller firmware.

I found that reverting to SBS 7.5.0 with the r8673 controller firmware
fixed the problem.

A bug should be filed against the r8837 controller firmware if one does
not already exist.

So if it isn't the volume control in i-Tunes then what else could it
be? Would the volume control in Windows be the culprit to adding these
tags? If it isn't Windows altering the tags either then you would be
current in stating that I certainly don't understand what is happening
here.

One thing I know for sure is that all volume leveling is turned off in
i-Tunes preferences and it was the only piece of software (Excluding
Windows OS, of course)involved in getting the CD data into a .wav
format.

Re: [slim] Firmware 15

2010-06-16 Thread snarlydwarf

The only way it would even potentially be better:

You have a SB2 that was modded and the mod 'corrected' the polarity on
output, which was due to a software bug in versions = 15 of the SB2.

Even then, it's dubious whether it is meaningful or not.

Ie, VERY old versions of firmware (=15) had a bug.

Some modder decided to fix it in hardware.

The bug was fixed in software at v16 and later.

So, all you would be doing is (in theory) making things worse, assuming
you believe polarity is discernable.

Do you have a modded SB2?

What difference does it even make? If replay gain is turned off (the
default setting) for the player playing these files then it's not
applied. It's just a piece of data that is ignored.

The WAV files probably don't have any tags. Information in iTunes
about the files would be in iTunes' database, not file tags.

Please let it die.

It is not better in any sense than the later versions.

Re: [slim] Transporter Bitrate Question

2010-06-16 Thread Phil Leigh

Can we start again?
You had 2 questions:

1) Why is the bitrate reported as lower than you think it should be -
answer: by default FLAC is used as the streaming transport protocol to
the player and that needs less bits than wav/pcm. It is still perfect
fidelity. Forget about it.

2) Why does Replaygain information show up on the screen? - answer: the
files you are playing have replaygain tags associated with them. They
were put there by iTunes. If you have the adjust volume options
turned off (settings - player - audio) they do nothing at all.
