A lot has happened on the hardware side for everyone that don't have a
pre-amp and external speakers in every room:

RECEIVER - MARCH 2008
- which allowed a cheap alternative to expand to another room
- which made third party remotes like iPeng and SqueezePad and
SqueezeCommander possible thanks to additions needed for the Squeezebox
Controller remote

BOOM - AUGUST 2008
- Stereo player in a room without external amplifiers and speakers

RADIO - SEPTEMBER 2009
- Small player for rooms which don't need stereo
- Battery based player that could be taken out in the garden

TOUCH - APRIL 2010
- Mainly an upgrade of the Classic with better sound
- Could have been a lot more if the built-in server had worked
reliable

I'm more disappointed at the progress on the software side than the
hardware side. If Logitech continue to release new hardware every year
as they've done the last three years it really doesn't look bad on the
hardware side. Of course, I personally doubt we will get any new
hardware during 2011, but this is just a feeling and not based on any
real information from Logitech.

Yes, combining flexibility and simplicity is the challenge which nobody
has been able to solve yet. Personally, I think plugins/apps is the key
to have a chance to get close to solving this. A simple core with
support for add-ons, where some users choose to only use the core and
other users want the flexibility and install some add-ons.

But this poll is about what would make it easier to recommend a
Squeezebox to your friends which don't own a Squeezebox, I'll add a
separate poll later on regarding what features that would make existing
users buy another Squeezebox and I suspect that poll result is going to
be a bit different from this poll. I just wanted to wait a bit with
this as I'd like to adapt the poll options based on what users answers
in the existing polls.

I hate to say that I have to agree quite strongly with Epoch1970's
sentiment.

I have three Squeezebox v3s and three booms; been running this for at
least 5 to 6 years now. Why? the SB3's are amazing audio quality and
plug directly into my pre-amps in various rooms. They work and they
stream music. The devices were designed to provide amazingly high DAC
for amazingly low price. They do that; do it well.

But, for those of us who use this is a primary whole-house audio
device, what's happened in the last 3 years?

Re: [slim] ReplayGain - How effective?

I definitely can tell a difference with replay gain, and I listen to a
lot of mixes. Switching to a music service usually requires a volume
adjustment or when the playlist switches from an album to a mix.

Sounds like you need iPeng for adjusting relative volume on all players
at once. ;-)

Could it be the type of music you listen to? Most of my listening is
pop, rock, country...the 4 minute song where there isn't a lot of
variation in volume within a track. I imagine volume equalization
would be much more difficult with classical or jazz.

Re: [slim] ReplayGain - How effective?

2011-07-23 Thread JJZolx

The other thing I find about using ReplayGain, even worse than my
disappointment with its effectiveness, is that it makes listening to
internet radio very inconvenient. Virtually every RG tag in my library
is a negative value, with most somewhere between -5 and -7dB. When
internet radio is played it BLASTS on all three systems, forcing me to
run around the house turning everything down. If I want to switch back
to local library listening, it's the reverse. I listen to internet
radio much less since setting RG on my Squeezeboxes.

Re: [slim] ReplayGain - How effective?

2011-07-23 Thread GeeJay

Every once in awhile I will hear a track that doesn't sound like it has
the right adjustment, but by and large it works well for me. I still
remember how often I had to change the volume before I had ReplayGain
tags; I don't have anything approaching that problem anymore. I used to
go back and manually change the value if I thought the track was too
loud or too soft, but I haven't done that in awhile, either.

BTW most of my listening is also random, and most of my collection is
FLAC. I do seem to recall that when I first applied RG tags to my
collection, somehow not all my tracks got tagged. It became very
noticeable which tracks didn't have a RG tag, and the volume variation
drove me nuts. I went back and retagged the entire collection (and
every time I rip a new CD I have dbPowerAmp tag the tracks), and things
got much better. On the rare occasion where I buy a track online, if I
forget to go back and apply an RG tag it becomes very obvious the first
time the track comes up in the mix.

Hokie,
Thanks for all the information. The Squeezebox Classic still
doesn't do Rhapsody, but I have a Duet that I don't normally use as
much but it does get Rhapsody fine (so does the remote for that matter)

think that is my problem. I'll keep tinkering and see what happens.

[slim] ReplayGain - How effective?

2011-07-23 Thread JJZolx

I've been using ReplayGain consistently for about the past six months.
My library is in Flac and I've added RG tags, both track and album, to
all tracks in the library.

Typically, for background listening I have a Transporter (living room),
an SB2 (kitchen), and a Radio (bathroom) kept in sync. All of them are
set to 'Smart Gain'.

My experience has been that ReplayGain is much less effective than I'd
anticipated, and only offers some nominal degree of volume
normalization. Particularly when listening to Random Mix, I'm still
constantly fiddling with volume on the player in the room that I'm in.
If someone were to sneak in and disable ReplayGain on all players, I'm
not sure I'd notice.

Your experience?

Everything he said (and more he did not say) is correct. For example,
show me spec numbers for your protectors that claimed any protection.
Good luck. A majority recommend it only because salesmen, advertising,
and hearsay told them how to think. Protectors on cable are wasted
money. Most cable companies recommend they be removed since it
subverts cable signal. And because that short connection to earth
(without any protectors) is best protection.

In every case, a surge is seeking earth ground. If the cable is
earthed, then why would that surge seek earth via your TV? Well again,
many people forget about electricity as taught in elementary school
science. Does a surge enter on a cable, destroy a TV, then stops? Of
course not. First a current is outgoing from the TV at the exact same
time a surge is also incoming on another wire. If cable is the
incoming path, then where is the other outgoing path to earth?

If no path to earth exists, then the incoming path also did not
exist.

The most common reason for damage is, for example, a lightning strike
to AC electric wires down the street. Now that surge is connected
directly to every appliance in your house. But again, from elementary
school science. What is the other outgoing path that must also exist?
Lightning striking wires down the street selects which appliance makes a
best connection to earth. That is the damaged appliance. All
appliances have in incoming path. Only some also have an outgoing
path.

Meanwhile, a protector adjacent to an appliance can even give that
surge even more paths to find earth - destructively.

You had damage because you all but invited that surge to go hunting
inside. Every wire in every incoming cable must be earthed short (ie
'less than 10 feet') to single point earth ground. AC electric is
three wires. Each wire must make that short earthing connection.
Informed consumers earth a 'whole house' protector (ie less than $50 in
Lowes) to connect two wires to earth. And - this is more important -
upgrade the only item that does any protection: single point earth
ground.

Protectors are more than fast enough IF the connection to earth is
short. How fast are protectors? A number that increases significantly
when wire is to earth is too long, has sharp bends, splices, is inside
metallic conduit, or goes over the foundation to earth. Wire length to
and quality of earth ground should have more than 50% of your attention.
Because protection is always about the only item that must absorb
hundreds of thousand of joules - with no damage even to a protector.

Why did facilities even 100 years ago suffer direct lightning strikes
without damage? Because the science and experience has been understood
and proven for that long. Too many people today want magic solutions
(fiber optic, plug-in protectors) because advertising is their
information source. Instead, learn why direct lightning strikes
without damage were routine long before anyone here was even born.
Learn well proven science. A protector is only as effective as its
earth ground.

[slim] Wimp app... so stupid...

2011-07-23 Thread OppfinnarJocke

Anyone but me using the Wimp app?
For sure not the developers...

This has bugged me for a long time, but today it really made me flip!

Do the following:
1. In the Wimp app search for your favorite artist
2. You get a number of artists, albums, and tracks. Looks good...
3. Click Artists, and then the artists name, and then that artists
albums
4. So you get a number of albums listed, click one of those
5. You get the songs of that albums listed
6. Click one of those
7. You get a page listing the title, artist, album etc...

But how the f to you get that track to play? The only thing that allows
you to get further is to select the artist again, and then you're on the
round-a-bout... back to Albums...

This is on my Duet controller, and/or on Squeeze Commander. Something
is not the way it should be here. That Wimp app is seriously
dysfunctional, and the people developing it should be sentenced to five
years of using it before being allowed to touch anything but
themselves...

There is nothing like it, an open source platform that grows with your
needs. These days everybody is releasing music streamers even the
audiophile boutique bands are all over it. This proves that the
transporter is well ahead of it's time. Logitech should consider
releasing another version that looks good in a rack can do 24/192 on
spdif and USB and enjoy the domination for the next five years.

What most manufacturer didn't get is that you don't want computer
connected to your audio system, but an extension of computer that is
easy to use and simple yet with the remote server you can achieve
anything you want. The perfect example is DRC one do advance processing
that was not even conceived at the time development but Added later.

This platform never looses the it factor, I can tinker as much as I
want yet if I don't it still amazes me with it's flexibility and
simplicity

I’ve tried changing the options on the network cards, changing the
physical network cards, turning off services that I thought might have
caused network distractions, but nothing seemed to change much.

Ideally, I would like to use another method of testing streaming speed
to check the validity of the Network Test plug in.

And its not like the competitors don't have their own issues. Sonos

Re: [slim] Network Test

2011-07-23 Thread Mnyb

Actually thats what i saw with win XP around 2008, I thougth it was down
to the botched up Norton install ? No more than 1500kbps, now my linux
server happily do 5000 with 1/4 of the cpu capacity ?
it was also an EOM HP install, maybe it is something with windows and
streaming ?

( installing ubuntu on that same machine also solved this )

can it be things to tweak in windows ?

[slim] Network Test

2011-07-23 Thread Skye

Has anyone else noticed a difference between Windows and Linux in the
maximum error-free rate that the ‘Network Test’ facility on a
Squeezebox can run at on a wired Ethernet connection?

I’ve a collection of mostly old PCs running either Windows XP, WHS or
Linux on my home LAN. I’ve loaded Squeezebox Server on to them. If I
then do a network test to each server I consistently see that it will
run at 5000 kbps for a good long while if the server is on Linux, but
it craps out quite soon at 1500 on any of the Windows machines.

I was wondering if this is an anomaly with the ‘Network Test’ plugin or
my particular LAN setup (Netgear GS608v2), or perhaps a known difference
in the network performance of the OS, which seems unlikely to me, hence
the question.

I think the setting you're looking for in SBS is Settings -> Player tab
-> (This is a per player setting) Basic Settings -> Play Other Songs in

I think "Logitech Squeezebox" is dead. I have at home SB3s and Boom, and
have equipped friends&family with the same (+ a server I whipped up.)
They're working great (except for the irritating firmware upgrades
merely required by evolutions on mySB.com that I have to manage for
them.)
I had a Duet from day 1, and it was a disaster. 2 years later it was
still. What I hear from the other products isn't all that good either.
In 2 or 3 years Logitech hasn't deployed any compelling music service
over the internet. No store, no liner notes, live events, concert
tickets … zilch.

I can't recommend the system to anyone I know now, because I don't
trust/value the available new hardware, and the software doesn't make
progress. Hearing about video support makes me shudder.
I hope the Apple Airplay solution gets cheaper over time; that would be
something easy to recommend.

For me I still invest in the system but I have to buy 2nd-hand SB3s on
Ebay, and I run an old version (the oldest I can) of the server. I'm
getting "Slim Devices squeezeboxes" second hand, they run cheaper! (and
they look better)
I expect a community fork will finally happen for the server and hope
for community ip3k firmwares as well.

(No need to tell me I am so wrong on such or such account. This is my
opinion.)

[slim] Announce: ReplayGain Scan Utility for Mac OS X

2011-07-23 Thread tufty

With music recorded at so many different levels, I've found it very
beneficial to use ReplayGain tags to keep volume at a reasonably
consistent level. I couldn't find any user-friendly tools to tag my
audio files on the mac, so I wrote my own.

ReplayGain Scan is an easy way to tag your FLAC, MP3 and AAC albums
with ReplayGain information, for volume-adjusted playback on your
Squeezebox player or other supported players.

Question: What would make it easier to recommend a Squeezebox ?

- Simplified installation and initial configuration
- Simplified usage after initial installation/configuration
- Integrated support for ripping music from CD and tagging it
- Support for more online streaming services
- Improved stability of mysqeueezebox.com
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in Squeezebox Server/Firmware
- New Squeezebox hardware which have reliable support for local music
  without a computer
- New Squeezebox hardware with built-in speakers and stereo support
- New Squeezebox hardware with support for video
- New entry level Squeezebox hardware with a lower price

I think Touch hardware could be enough.

The real problem is the software.
The scanner is really too slow, even in 7.6
I think developers team wanted something too ambitious and too much
automatic.
They should really have a look at the interface and performance of
others softwares.
Logitech scan is really not even close to popular softwares.
There is really nothing to "invent" there.
The real point people should care about is the quality of the user
interface.
It is not normal that pure scan performance is so slow, may be wrong
development choices concerning scanner and database schema.

In this case, people should stop for a while, and try to understand how
other softwares are developped, there is no "huge secret" there.

The real problem with TinySBS is the scan, and the nightmare which
makes it unusable is that you cannot prevent undesired and unnecessary
rescan.

>From the beginning, I suggested several times, and it is certainly
quite simple to develop, a behavior in which you can perform external
HDD scan on a computer, and use the database as it is when you connect
it to the Touch, without any rescan.

I am quite sure that this way, we would be close from something
acceptable.

I am trying Logitech Media Server.
I really do worry a lot about Squeezebox product line future when I see
them working on Videos and Pictures scan, more or less in the same
direction they perform music scan, and with obviously quite limited
resources.

Streaming FLAC music w/o a running computer was the enabler deciding me
to go for SB line. However I have to admit that this was not easy going
in the late 2006 as NAS based solutions where either over expensive or
under powered …or both.
I can barely recommend normal people to try this way.

In the mean time Logitech released SBTouch, which is per spec capable
of acting as a server, unfortunately the HW choice driven first by cost
makes it being under powered to do this job reliably. FW/SW also makes
out of the box experience being very confusing for a none techie guy.

So I vote for having such an SB that reliably and seamlessly support
local music (USB or LAN) streaming w/o a computer …BTW it should also
being able to tune on web radio avoiding the need of mySqueezebox.com
mess that just confuse everybody that is not SB customer since the
early 2000.

Such a product can be easy recommended and will allows my friend
staying my friend after their purchase ;-)

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squeezeslave: 1.0 released

2011-07-23 Thread gdi2k

Thanks for this great tool, I look forward to using it in a multi-room
system one day in the future!

On the whole, things are working nicely. I ran into the chipmunk issue
when playing certain radio streams quite quickly, but using the
custom-convert.conf from

http://code.google.com/p/squeezeslave/source/browse/squeezeslave/trunk/squeezeslave/config/custom-convert.conf.441?spec=svn198&r=197

and mplayer.sh from

http://code.google.com/p/squeezeslave/source/browse/squeezeslave/trunk/squeezeslave/config/mplayer.sh?r=197

seems to work well - apart from one small thing: When mplayer is used
to resample offending streams, it uses 100% CPU. Are there any tweaks I
can use to fix this? The issue is not present when using flac / sox
(they use 2% CPU each). The issue is also not present when using
[mplayer] (as opposed to [mplayer.sh]) in custom-convert.conf, but then
all sorts of other things go wrong.

CPU is an Intel Core2 Duo P8600 @ 2.40GHz, so it shouldn't be too
stressed by such a transcode. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit.

Re: [slim] Lightening!

2011-07-23 Thread toby10

With surge protectors you need a high rated clamping speed (time it
takes to detect the surge and engage the protection).
Not being a physics expert I suppose some surges are just too
quick/close for anything to stop it, I dunno.

Another thing to look into is a surge protector at your electric panel,
usually referred to as "whole house" surge protection.
It's just a surge device that is installed in a breaker slot in your
box. You need one for each circuit (around here all homes have at
least two circuits).
BUT these are not meant to be used exclusively. You should still
have local surge protection at your devices (computers, A/V rack,
etc..).

Another thing to look into is how well your electric panel is grounded.
This is an area where builders will cheat because few think to ask
about it, and even if you ask how would you know the grounding spike is
actually xx feet into the ground? Also grounding spikes can deteriorate
over time (rust, corrosion, etc..).

I had my grounding spike replaced and had two of the breaker surge
protectors installed by a licensed electrical contractor all for under
$150.
The original ground spike was only 4 feet and it broke when they tried
to remove it as it was so badly corroded. The new spike is like 6 feet
(might be 8 feet).
That contractor told me he can often just pull such grounding spikes
out of the ground by hand cuz they are often only two foot in length,
which is just not sufficient grounding.

The statement _IS_ correct and no, I can not provide links and maybe

But please have a look for only a single AirPlay product that has a

Are you using mysb.com or a locally-running Squeezebox Server (SBS)? If
the latter, then the menus are customizable separately for each SB. You
can look under Settings > Home Menu to see if Spotify is selected -- you
have to do this separately for the Touch and the Radio.
