Re: [slim] Squeezebox (and others) on IFA trade show in Berlin

2011-09-05 Thread Pascal Hibon

Well most company’s model depends on product sales. There is no
difference for Squeezebox. And that’s what I meant with “Logitech
doesn’t understand Squeezebox”. Logitech is good at “keyboard and mice”
type of products. You don’t need advanced marketing programs for those
types of products. It is a totally different story for Squeezebox. This
is a niche market type of product and it requires more marketing
attention (Sonos is good at that). Logitech entered into a vicious
circle with Squeezebox; by not giving this product line the attention
it requires, sales of these devices are not climbing (probably
declining and more customers going for the Sonos products). While sales
are declining, Logitech will spend less attention to the Squeezebox
product line. Eventually they will most probably drop it.
I still hope that Logitech wakes up and realizes they mistake. From a
user experience angle Squeezebox is still ahead of Sonos so it is not
to late yet. But time is running out.

Although the Boom was released during the Logitech age, this was still
a Slimdevices product. It was build based on the SB3 platform and most
Slimdevices personal were still (more or less) driving the company.
The Radio and the Touch are pure Logitech products.
But all that is not so important. The fact that the attention that the
Squeezebox product line received went downhill under the Logitech wings
is important, but very sad.
I consider the lack of new Squeezebox products even less problematic
than the terrible SBS software releases. It is problems like these that
chase away potential new customers and it gives a bad reputation to the
Squeezebox lineup.

It's not obvious and took me a while to figure out. In the left hand
pane, browse your library by Artist, then album or all tracks -
whichever is appropriate. Then in the main viewing pane select the
tracks you want delete (with select all being at the top). Finally at
the very bottom of the screen, there is a button to delete tracks.

It updates in SBS within a few hours.

I find it very frustrating, there are some great products in the SB line
and a loyal and dedicated user community some of who are producing some
excellent add-ons to enhance the system.

Yet Logitech have cut the team, reduced the marketing and seemingly has
no strategy for the future - its sad to see how weak the product line
looks against Sonos and Streamium in those pictures

I'm happy with the way my system works, I have 4 zones (plus one player
boxed), a vortexbox server and it all hangs together well - however we
all want to play with new toys and look for improvements to what we
have - its part of being into gadgets/technology/streamers

Re: [slim] Zune Pass

2011-09-05 Thread toby10

Yeah, that's a *kludge* (a mess, a lot of hassle to perform a simple
task). ;)
It's still a *kludge* with Sonos' "updated" support.

I only commented on the link you provided which has not been updated
since 2008. With no other reference I can only conclude it is the same
now.

What is new/different/changed now I don't know. But reading the Zune
issues from your posted link I can only conclude that:
- WMP is required and must be running (I wouldn't run WMP to save my
life, but that's another topic)
- running two servers on the same computer is not smart and can be
prone to introducing more issues (ports for example)
- needing WMP running knocks out playback options (can't use NAS as
server nor the Touch's inbuilt server)
- can the correct WMP version even run on a Mac to access Zune DRM
infection?
- can't use playlists
- no Zune streaming services

And my favorite is "refreshing DRM rights". That's like playing Oliver
Twist with your music. "Sir, may I please have another 30 days of my
music, please?"

Re: [slim] how do you delete albums from Napster library?

2011-09-05 Thread aubuti

Thanks, but it sounds like the UK and US interfaces are different (I
know several regional differences became apparent a few months ago as
well). I can delete playlists, which for a period was the only way to
save an album in the Napster library. But that delete button is on the
top of the screen, after selecting the "My Playlists" tab from among My
Collection, My Playlists, My Activity, My Account.

When I browse My Collection, say by albums, I don't see any way to
select tracks, and there is no delete button on the bottom. Just three
buttons on the top for Play/Queue, Save All, and Buy. I'd post a
screenshot, but it's on the long side and requires scrolling even for a
single album.

Thanks for the help though.

This in particular I'd insist on knowing before using any streaming
product, Sonos or other, as this can be quite a limiting factor. If
WMP must be running to play Zune music that is an issue.

No, SBS and WMP are not even in the same league. ;)

I've never looked into it myself but obviously you have which is why
you are here. ;)
Exactly which multi-room player/systems can use Zune?
What about networked AVR's which are adding more & more services every
model year?
Or is it Sonos or nothing?

with the logitech app, one can't switch player back and forth between

I think it sees whatever the player is ALREADY connected to (either
mysb.com or your local sbs). Your player is connected to SbS, so the
app sees that (which is what should be happening for the other poster).

Seems like a different library to me.
" To view these tracks using your Sonos Controller, select Windows

Also makes no mention that WMP need not be running. Only says to

Ah. Good point. sometimes I think ipeng has gone on the blink then I
realize that I'm still on 3G instead of my LAN wifi.

Is this restriction ever going to be removed? I'd love to be able to
manually enter the IP address of my SBS server; it is on a different
net than my wireless LAN that drives my IPad and other devices.

I know there was some talk earlier about fixing this but it's been
silent for awhile.

J. River Media Center is another client application that works
similarly with Whitebear (i.e. it downloads the databasae from
Whitebear and caches it locally).

Try out Whitebear. The middleware that joins the two worlds of:
1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and,
2. Squeezebox Server and Squeeze Players
Download it for free here: http://www.whitebear.ch/mediaserver

2011-09-05 Thread aubuti

No, not at all. I think my Napster looked like that a year or two ago.
Maybe. This is the album view I get now for "My Collection".

I did find a "Remove" option when browsing by artists. I presume it
will delete _all_ albums/tracks for a particular artist, but I haven't
tested it yet to confirm that.

I'm not sure that's the case, at least not regarding hardware, I
believe Sean and Dean were still employed by Logitech when the Radio
and Touch hardware were developed even though both had left when Radio
was officially released. My feeling is that the pure Logitech product
will be the one coming after the Touch, not sure if that's going to be
the Revue or something else we haven't seen yet.

[slim] Open Ports and Services

2011-09-05 Thread tthaler

Dear readers and admins

I have Sqeezebox 7.4.1 installed on a Synology DS710+.
The DS710+ is in the DMZ and the SqueezeBox Radio in in the WLAN.
Unfortunately, I don't see the music I have on the server, in the
Sqeezebox Radio, but I have access over mysqueezebox.com and can do
some configurations on my device. Even with this, I get the message,
that the SqueezeBox Server doesn't know of any Squeezebox device.

So as I use a Sonicwall NSA240, I guess it has to do something with
closed ports and services and so on.
Can anyone tell me which ports on which service (TCP,UDP,IGMP,...) do
have to be open.

Thank you for anyones replay and help.
Regards
Thomas Thaler

It does make sense that the Radio and Touch are based on the controller
hardware. Anyway, the hardware is not the issue. The biggest concerns
are related to software.

Off topic, but does anyone know what Sean and Dean are doing these

I did try Sonos but after a month re-installed my SB3 in the main
listening area. Sonos still has a long way to go before it will have
the user experience of a Squeezebox system.
It is way too expensive for the product you get in return. It lacks a
lot of basic functionality. Functionality I couldn’t live without.

Re: [slim] Open Ports and Services

2011-09-05 Thread JJZolx

Port 3483 TCP/UDP, port 9000 TCP. You may also need port 9090 TCP for
CLI connections.

But the problem may not be firewall settings. If the server and player
are on different network subnets then they won't be able to see each
other using the standard discovery method. You will probably need to
set up a remote server. On the Radio, go to

Settings > Advanced > Networking > Remote Libraries

Add a new library. Enter the IP address of the Synology. Then back at
the home menu of the Radio, go into My Music and you should see the
server you just set up and should be able to connect to it.

I said architecture.
It's indeed th software, not the hardware which is shared between the
controller and the new Squeezeboxes. Except for some firmware details
(mostly drivers) and of course the embedded server, the Controller runs
the same software as Radio and Touch.
