Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!

2013-02-23 Thread Hoopy

Hi, I'm pretty new to Orange Queeze and love it so far! There's just on
thing I can't figure out. Under 'my music' I can see the menu entries
for 'dynamic playlists' and 'trackstat' (though their icons are greyed
out) and can also traverse their submenu tree, but I can't actually
select them, i.e. when selecting a danymic playlists it doesn't queue
songs. What am I missing here? (I'm running v1.3.7 on a Gaalxy S3, also
tried the preview version).

Cheers,
Hoopy

[slim] Static Burst - Radio and Duet

2013-02-23 Thread cparker

Hi guys

Has anybody else experienced a static burst at the end of a
track/transition into a new track. I've noticed this on the Radio and
also the Duet, its really scary if you are listening to some nice
chilled music and suddenly for the last few seconds of the track it will
go full volume and blast out static. I thought it was a corrupted mp3
track to start with but it will do it again on the next track
transition. I tried rebooting the Radio and played the track again,
same problem. Rebooted the LMS server and same problem. Only way to
"fix" it, is to manually select a new track to play and then it seems
ok, the original track will then also play ok again.

Really strange, this is local and wifi connected devices (n class), they
are not in a sync group. Smart Crossfade enabled, fade in /out over 10
secs. 100% volume lock on the Duet (not on the Radio)
Will normally play on and off for weeks without issue. Its like there
is a buffer fault in the code somewhere that only shows after a lot of
play time.

Any thoughts, sure its not doing the speakers any good at all, or my
nerves! :)

Cheers

Re: [slim] Static Burst - Radio and Duet

2013-02-23 Thread SlimChances

I had this happen while playing a piece (Poem by Robbie Burns)off
YouTube with the YouTube plugin. Just about blew me and my friends out
of our chairs. I assumed it was the YouTube feed although that same
piece worked fine on the computer. I have not used the plugin since and
not had another incident but I would be interested if the plugin was not
the cause of the static noise.

Cool, I got worried because I asked one of the maintainers of one of the
firmwares for my router and he said something like duplicate host names
are not supported.

Which sounded like maybe duplicate hostnames are a problem.

I guess he meant that the router won't be able to show the duplicate
names.

I got everything up and running and all,of my earlier problems using the
touch with a hard drive are long gone. I'm amazed at how much quicker
the response and search times are with a vortexbox. I bought a dell
optilex for $50 added a 1 tb drive and 4 gigs of ram.

Question: What should we call this new device?

- FLÄKK
- Open Music Box

I opted for "Open Music Box", since that at least gave some sense of
what the thing does. But I wasn't particularly enthralled with that
choice, either.

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-02-23 Thread nullstring

This is looking very promising guys.

A few things I would like to request:

- I'm not sure how much the high quality DAC is going to cost, but it
*might* be nice to have a second version of the board with the DAC and
related components just not soldered on. Some people are going to be
just looking for a transport and would rather not spend on the money
on the DAC chip. Keeping the same PCB and just having a choose whether
these components are soldered on or not would make it easy for both
  sides.
- For Gen1, I would very much like to see some generic interfaces that
could be useful for other applications. A high quality audio output
device could be used it many other ways than a squeezebox. I, myself,
would like to see HDMI, Sata, LVDS, UART, I2C, and some GPIOs
- (Some of this may have been implied, but I've assumed things like
this in the past and have gotten bitten for it.)

My dream goal for this device would be as a semi-portable audio player.
If someone can figure out how to cheaply add a touchscreen to the
wandboard and i would be golden. Being able to use the sata interface
would be rather convenient to this goal.

Another thing I haven't seen anyone mention:

The wandboard's modular interface is based on this "EDM" standard, which
seems to include I2S
http://www.edm-standard.org/

This means that we may not be limited to just the wandboard.
Of course, drivers are a very important factor in this.. and the large
reason I believe we're going with the wandboard is because we have I2S
drivers ready to use.
But thats still quite interesting that we could be making a more
universal module.. allowing it to be using with a range of hardware.

Currently wandboard and this company.. TechNexion, seem to be only ones
using the standard.. but it is still quite new.

The analog hardware parts themselves are not that expensive, so the
overhead cost of doing a run costs more than the price of the
components, the upshot is that two runs, some without analog hardware,
would cost more per board than just one larger run with all the parts.

I'm not quite sure about all the other interfaces. If you just want a
computer with all those interfaces there are lots imx6 devel boards with
tons of interfaces available, you can just buy one of those right now.

Or is what you are asking is our board but have a large massive pin
header with all the pins on the module brought out to pin headers? That
would take some pretty big headers, it would make the board a lot
larger. I'm not sure it's a good thing to do. It would start looking
like a PC104 board.

I'm planning on having a few GPIOs available on a connector on the
board, but if you go more than that you then have to decide which of the
MANY interfaces do you want to bring out?

It's just something to think about. I have no idea which chip you're
using, or what analog circuitry (I/V, etc.) or digital circuitry is
going to be necessary for said chip.

The RPI has plenty of interfaces, and it's not very big. I'm not talking
about all that much.
It's easy to imagine people might want to use a LCD screen. (LVDS)
It's easy to imagine someone might want this to be a touch screen.
(UART? not sure which interface these typically use)
It's easy to imagine people might want to connect the device to their
TV/monitor. (HDMI)
Many IC's use I2C and SPI
People might also want to add a few hardware buttons, cheap 20x2 LCD
panel, volume controls, and the likes.
