Re: [slim] Pono Player
So this is a portable device, intended to provide portable music? I'd like to see the earbuds/headphones that go with it. iPods and such are typically used as mobile devices, useful for listening to music on the go. Anything that is going to capitalize on high-grade sound needs a high-grade speaker assembly. To get that in a mobile context implies tradeoffs -- e.g. sound-cancelling technology that compromises the quality issue, sound-blocking features that makes you deaf to everything around you, or sound volumes that just make you deaf. No doubt. But if you want a music player -- as many do, even if it's a minority -- then the comparison is valid. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101133 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The iPod also works with fewer formats. I haven't seen the issue of gaplessness addressed yet. One would hope that will all the artists and technicians on board that won't be an issue, but... atrocity's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16009 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101133 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

A coat pocket or backpack pocket would be fine. Trousers, not so much unless they're really baggy. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101133 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Bufferring issue with HD files from NAS; same files OK from Imac
It depends on what your priorities are. If you're concerned about the sound quality, and I would guess that you are if you're bothering with the high-res files, then you need to get a Touch to benefit from the increased resolution. A new server solution will carry out the transcoding but what is the point when this will negate the possible sound improvements. If you can't find a Touch anywhere I would permanently transcode the files to 24/48 and then put them on the Nas. Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
One bug that has been annoying me for quite some time is that SqueezePad does not always (it only happens occasionally) correctly display the On/Off Status on the left side. I don't really know how to trigger this, but this must be somewhat related to using me the alarm clock - which is the only thing I'm using the SqueezeBox Classic for - random MP3s as alarm every morning from the music collection. Here is a screenshot of SqueezePad showing on the right that the song is playing (the progess bar at the bottom is moving!), while simultaeously claiming on the left that could could turn the SqueezeBox on. [image: http://nv-systems.net/pics/forum-slimdevices/squeezepad1.PNG] After forcefully closing the app and starting it again, the song is still playing but now on the left it "knows" that it's on and that it could be turned off. [image: http://nv-systems.net/pics/forum-slimdevices/squeezepad2.PNG] It would be nice if the on/off detection could be made more reliable in SqueezePad. I'm using a SqueezeBox Classic and the logitechmediaserver in version "7.8_pre20140105" on Gentoo Linux. This bug is not specific to a special version of SqueezeCenter/Logitechmediaserver though. I've had this for years. It would appear that the Pono ecosystem basically mirrors the iPod/iTunes/iTunes store model. Nothing new there. What *is* new are the following: 1. The player costs $399. This is a joke, right? 2. The player has a triangular form factor that makes it inconvenient to slip in a pocket. Re: [slim] Pono Player
I don't understand the Pono product. It just seems like yet another portable music player. There are plenty of portable music players around who are able to play lossless music formats. If this is about quality, then why a portable player and why not a streamer that you can hook up to your stereo? I'm never going to 'actively' listen to music on my portable devices, but I will do so on my stereo at home. And if this is about quality, then why bother with hi-res formats? Hi-res is not a guarantee for high quality music. If quality is important then young should be talking to the music industry and try to get them 1) make good quality recordings and mixes and 2) stop compressing the hell out of the music. 1 x SB3, 1 x SB Boom, 1 x SB Radio and 2 x SB Touch - all wireless 1 x Wandboard Dual behind the bedroom ceiling 1 x Wandboard Dual for 'msqueeze' (http://www.msqueeze.co.nf/index.html) project ReadyNAS NVX running LMS 7.7.3. w iTunes plugin iPeng 7 on iPhone.
