Re: [slim] Logitech killed Squeezebox were to get a duet

2014-05-12 Thread Guut_Boy

An other good option is getting a Raspberry Pi and running piCorePlayer
or SqueezePlug on it (There may be other installations I dont know of).
This is, as far as I can tell, the cheapest solution (although if you
want really good sound I guess you need an external DAC of some kind,
which can get expensive). Of course you don't get the controller like
with Duet, but if you have an iphone/ipad/android-device there are very
good controller apps.

The short answer is no.

However, there are software solutions out there now that allow you to
use almost any computer as a "player" that would be easily as good as
the Receiver.

The established name is Vortexbox. This is a specialist Linux operating
system that, when installed on virtually any x86 based PC (including
intel Atom processors), turns it into a server and player. Find a mini
enough computer to install it on and you will have a player to rival the
Receiver. They have a commercial arm that retails PCs with it ready
installed, but these are bigger and aimed more at those needing a full
server rather than just a player.

If you are feeling slightly more adventurous there is a similar Linux
based operating system being produced by this community that is aimed
more at those needing just a small player.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?99395-Community-Squeeze-OS-F19-Release-1

This is designed primarily to work on the ARM based "Wandboard" range of
micro PCs (although it will work with other ARM boards). The Wandboards
come as a motherboard with embedded processor and RAM, but the case, PSU
and aerial are extra. This has a basic DAC function and audio-out so
will produce audio, but for best results you should use an external
DAC.

John Swenson is also creating a special DAC module for the Wandboards
that, hopefully, will make them better than anything Logitech produced.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97881-Community-Funded-Squeezebox-Replacement-Would-you-be-interested

My two Receivers are still chugging along nicely and - more importantly
- so are the Controllers. There are loads of ways of replacing the
Receivers, but nobody is going to create a dedicated controller that is
no use for anything else and hence unlikely to go missing (its main
attraction as far as I am concerned!). I suppose one day mini Android
tablets will get so cheap that they could replace the controller -
provided I could somehow lock my children out of nicking them to play
games on!

Yep..I´m in the same situation...neither that I can find the "current
playlist" anymore nor that I would be able to delete a certain song from
that list besides the one which is currently playing.
In addition to that whenever I start the app I get this "No players
found" pic (although it´s only for a split second).

Besides that I really like the app.

Cheers.

The Now Playing appears as a small panel on the bottom of the screen
(when you are playing something). You can swipe upwards (or just press
it) to make it full screen. I don't think there is a playlist view in
this early preview version (the release notes mention that it isn't
implemented yet).

Looks like you're right. They were $100 just a few weeks ago somewhere,
now $150 is about the best I see anywhere. Original Squeezebox branded
Radios are all > $200 (which is a little silly, because the hardware is
the same and you don't get a battery).

If the software isn't maintained/supported it doesn't matter if it's
installed as firmware on the device, on a local computer or on a cloud
server, either way your system isn't going to work. It's much easier to
maintain the software in one place (the cloud) instead of maintaining
custom firmware for all possible hardware revisions out there. Just look
at Logitech, they have stopped updating the firmware for older
Squeezebox models but they can still ensure compatibility with latest
changes on the online services by updating mysqueezebox.com.

I'm fairly sure that one of the biggest reasons why my 8 years old
Squeezebox Classic still works with a lot of online services is the fact
that it's based on a slim design with all online service integration
logic on the server side.

Re: [slim] Gacedigital good alternative?

2014-05-12 Thread bklaas

FWIW, I've tested Grace and Squeezebox (and a few others) side-by-side,
and while they've done an awfully good job copying the physical look of
the Radio, the sound quality is nowhere near what Squeezebox Radio has
in that form factor. Squeezebox and Sonos are a giant step up in audio
quality from all of the other players in this market.

The UI that powers Grace is usable but not nearly as nicely thought out.
Reciva is the uPnP of streaming architectures too, and I don't mean that
as a compliment. I don't think the Grace supports multi-room sync
either.

What I think is compelling about Grace is their price point of about
$100, but you can buy a getting-rid-of-remaining-stock UE Smart Radio
(which you can convert to a Squeezebox Radio through a firmware upgrade)
for the same price. Since the local server is public domain, that device
can run until it dies, which oddly enough gives it a slightly better
long-term outlook than the Reciva-based Grace.

IMHO, there can be nothing to compare to the Squeezebox system. The
sound quality, the diverse functionality, the community, the aesthetics
of the devices, the third party capabilitiesand so much more.
I think it's very unfortunate that LOGITECH has chosen to not continue
the Squeezebox line. I'm glad they have continued to support

True, but there's an awful lot of hardware and apps out there using
Reciva so personally I don't feel that's too likely IMO.

Nicht alles was hinkt ist ein Vergleich :p

To measure correct you have to measure same hardware and same "setups".
sqlite /mysql needs (under Winblows) .NET Framework => 2.0 we must not
discuss that .net framework is something that needs power?
A startup from a powered off system everytime runs faster under *ux than
under blows - even with a ssd.

If you take a 16 GB System and use only 32 bit software its quite
-trouser like jacket- which OS you running :o
