I'm using a Hifiberry Digi+, connected to "sensing" powered speakers
over S/PDIF. The output switches off when nothing is playing and the
speakers power off a few minutes later.

If you're prepared to use a trigger signal from the player to control
the power to your speakers (eg. using a relay), then you could use the
PowerSwitch plugin on the SB3 - this puts out a 3V DC signal on the
heaphone socket when the player is on.
piCorePlayer has a power on/off GPIO control facility, which can deliver
a 3.3V DC signal on the GPIO pin of your choice when the player is on.
If you use a DIGI+ HAT then you'd have to choose a GPIO pin that it
doesn't use and passes through.

Cheers!

Ralphy, I have tried that option but it does not seem to work for me
(LMS 7.9.2). Both digital outputs seem to remain active...

Is this behaviour specific for MY installation only?

There is a player setting in audio to do exactly that.

allow them to sleep. I have to do this with my DAC as the TV optical
output is always on. Just shows the Intelligent Signal Sensing isn't all
that intelligent. I wonder how many devices do actually switch off the
digital outputs in standby.

Any signal inside that I can use for reading the on/off-state? Any
enable pin that is connected to a fixed state that I can redirect to
that on/off-state? Any idea to use an additional CMOS-logic chip to
incorporate that on/off-state that I will use to switch the S/PDIF
signal?

How about using a RPI with a HIFIBerry DIGI+? Any chance to achieve it
there? Unfortunately I would lose the sexy VFD-display...
