Re: [slim] Compilations - appearance in the LMS interface

2021-07-19 Thread BJW

see my sig links.

i put one CD per folder only.
i use AA tags on everything.
i put a comp=1 tag on only those things i want identified as a comp. no
comp=0 tags.
i change the default value in settings of denoting comps as "Various
Artists" to "-Various Artists-" bc of a nasty bug in LMS where any
string conflict with the value of that setting in any AA or A tag value
(and possibly others) results in that entry being hidden by LMS (in at
least some parts of the UI)

with comps and LMS, its important to remember its a two part process...
the first being in how LMS identifies comps, the second being in how it
then handles them once identified.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2019-12-02 Thread BJW

I think it's def worthy for LMS to give and keep accurate stats.

How many tracks? Albums? Album artists? Mp3s? M4as? Flacs?
Etc...

How many albums are comps? How many tracks are from comps?

And do the stats LMS displays match the number of audio files scanned?

Seems like a basic and relatively simple thing for a database to do, no?

Re: [slim] Switzerland to cease analogue VHF FM broadcasting by the end of 2024

2019-09-12 Thread BJW

i believe the article said Norway switched off its national FMs, but
locals still do FM.

i know very little about the various DAB implementations. i think if
the different gov'ts of the world want to go all digital to replace
analog FM so they can reclaim the spectrum for other uses they will need
to do the following:

1. make sure its very HQ, at least modern 320kbps mp3 level.
2. make sure it has the reach AND penetration of analog broadcasts.
3. mandate that all new automobile, and eventually all radios of any
type, support analog and digital.

all that would be required at a minimum imo. given the USA exp with
HDTV, (which was similar to y2k in some aspects) i think it will be a
LONG time before anything moves here, unless there is significant
external pressure to do so.

Re: [slim] Switzerland to cease analogue VHF FM broadcasting by the end of 2024

2019-09-12 Thread BJW

wow, i never thought i'd see this. unlike TV, which made sense to go
all digital, it seemed to me that analog FM radio would live forever,
for a variety of reasons...

one wonders if digital FM broadcasting will gain enough of a foothold to
actually survive? tech like 5G could supplant it b4 it ever really gets
established.

while i have no beef with internet radio, it just isn't the same as a
quality, local, non corporate FM that focuses on the local community. i
have np with business or anything like that, but one of the joys of life
in America, was going on a road trip and hearing the local flavor from
regional stations that were unique. unfortunately the corporate
conglomertizations (sic) of the industry have ironically hastened its
downfall, by making it too bland and generic and not relevant to the
audience, prompting them to do podcasts, streaming, etc.

imo, traditional radio broadcasting will only survive going forward
serving niche audiences, that are unique and local and relevant to that
listener. thats why sports talk has gotten so big for instance. a
focus on community will keep the listener coming back.

i know i'm singing an old man's lament, but i loved being a college
radio DJ. and maybe internet broadcasting isn't so different, but i do
feel like something has been lost. c'est la vie!

Re: [slim] You learn something new everyday

2019-03-19 Thread BJW

Things got confused in this thread imo. I use RG, I do not use
normalization and wouldn't want to.

But the other issue doesn't make sense. Think of output level as the
volume knob. If it's at 10, that's 100%. If it's at 5, that's 50%. In
either case, RG should be applied and noticeable (vs not being applied)
bc it's done in software, prior to reaching the output stage.

So while I never put anything past server and it's hardware
implementation, I believe the contention that 100% output defeats RG is
wrong.

i do understand the ecosystem. i have been using this stuff for ~ten
years now.

the things you point out, are things i know and knew and just obvious.
the things i am saying that you are replying to, are things that i
consider to be part of why all this ecosystem died. and just to be
clear, it is dead.

i have np with what exists. my problem is with what they didn't create.
there should have been more focus on the windows market, b/c without
that market, this was never going to be viable. the problem was that
there was too much blind ideology or philosophy involved, basically a
commitment to platform independence above all else, (mainly b/c the devs
were all linux/mac types, and none of them live and work and play in a
windows environment).

what i suggested, (and i did so before this ecosystem died) is that had
they made a windows driver, that then fed a transparent app whose job
was to feed the audio from the driver into TCP/IP to the devices, then
this all might have been viable. the advantage for the user is that
they then could have used any software on the computer they wanted to
use. i for one, find the server to be ridiculously designed, and not
fun to use. that seems to be the sentiment of the market as well.

i could have used winamp to play all my stuff the way i ALREADY was
using winamp. and i can remote control my winamp too, i don't need
server for that. think about it, all the money/resources/time poured
into developing server, which was not a revenue generator, could have
been used elsewhere.

anyway, it makes no difference now if i am right or wrong. but what
must be acknowledged, is what was done, was not the right thing to do.

totally agree! i believe had the first SB used a native audio driver
for windows, that would have been huge.

and it never "just worked" for me. in fact, i blame it for killing
several HDs before i realized there was some kind of conflict between
Server and windows defender, and thats just one of many issues i had.

i consider my whole exp with this stuff to be an education, but its not
something i think has much of a future or much appeal to anyone else

well, yeah, but you should still be able to do an open and teach

so anyway, it'll be a while before i can look at mine again, but even if
we think the problem is with some entry in my 22k one that keeps it from

is just handling some otherwise valid entry poorly.

Re: [slim] Win7 firewall and server / duet

2014-03-29 Thread BJW

ok, first, thx all for the help.

I just tried adding these three rules manually to the inbound rules
section for public, private, and domain:

Port number: 3483 (TCP)
Port number: 3483 (UDP)
Port Number: 9000 (TCP)

do I need them in outbound rules or anywhere else?

I then turned back on the private firewall and everything SEEMS to be
working. hooray! (buzzkill: I have not tried rebooting or power
cycling anything yet, but this is an improvement, as before just turning
on the firewall without the entries would seemingly instantly sever the
connection)

oddly, there were lots of entries in the rules for the LMS exe apps it
seems, but I guess they weren't enough?

SO, I am suggesting it is a bug, in that why aren't these three rules
written if they are missing? for instance, I just went from 7.7.3 to
8.0 and the rules weren't added. why not?

[slim] Playlist bug 7.8?

2014-03-29 Thread BJW

hi all,

so I have three playlists. two are sub 3k entries, while the other is
about 22k. *.m3u8 files.

I scan them in and all seems well.

in the webui I go to homemy musicplaylists, and if I click on the sub
3k ones, they pop right up (meaning the songs entries on the left half
of the screen).

but the 22k one results in a blank left half of the screen.

is this a known bug?

I have not changed it but that isn't what I'm talking about. that is on

I am talking about the lefthand side where you browse your

Re: [slim] Playlist bug 7.8?

2014-03-29 Thread BJW

I'm not sure I understand you, but I created my playlist files with
winamp.

i think the whole 500 limit thing is a tangent that does not apply to
this situation. that's for loading songs to be played on the right hand
side.

remember what i said: i have three playlists, all made by winamp, and
all scanned into server. i can *play* ALL THREE of them.

the issue is DISPLAY, meaning when you click the playlist name to
actually look at what is inside it, which is done on the lefthand side.
two display fine, and they both exceed the 500 number. the third will
not display on the lefthand portion of the screen.

so, imo, the problem is either server, (which i consider the more
likely), or it is this playlist in that it has some kind of entry that
is invalid for display for some reason, and that could be either
servers' or the playlists' fault.

I believe r128 is a newer way to calc RG. I believe LUFS is a unit of
volume measurement. but I could be wrong on both counts.

I think what it is asking tho, is what reference volume u want RG to be
at?

I can tell u that with winamp, I am pretty sure reference volume is
89db, and there is a RG pre-amp (which server could use imo) that lets u
adjust that amount up or down 6db (I think).

Re: [slim] Win7 firewall and server / duet

2014-03-22 Thread BJW

hi,

I finally tried something, but no luck.

I had a 7.7.3 install that didn't work as I described above. I then
turned back on the firewall and installed the Mar 21 7.8 nightly on top.
it did not fix the issue. I turned off the private network half of the
firewall and all was well again.

I am reluctant to fully uninstall and delete everything and try a fresh
7.8 install b/c I would have to setup everything from scratch. it seems
to me that this is instead a bug and that server should be fixed so that
when upgrade installs are done, it checks the firewall rules to make
sure the right ones are there, and the wrong ones removed.

how can I fix the current install by manually correcting the firewall
rules?

Re: [slim] Is there any continued development of the Squeezebox server software?

2013-04-18 Thread BJW

the biggest mistake was that they bought something they clearly didn't
understand.

the second biggest mistake is that the business model was idiotic. the
hardware cost way too much, was a one time thing, and didn't fund what
actually cost them money, which was development of a slow, lumbering,
hunk of shit server that no one wanted to use.

what Logitech should have done, imo, was focus on the hardware as media
extenders for existing software that others develop and maintain. so it
could work with winamp, iTunes, wmp, whatever. why they thought people
would flock to a buggy server with a webui, I will never understand.
not to mention it HAD to use the server.

they should sell it off. whoever buys it should adapt the hardware to
work as I describe above, and then its just a matter of the hardware
being better than other hardware and competing and finding a niche that
way. let it work with any and everything out there, via a simple plugin
or some kind of OS level middleman whose only job is to get the audio to
the device. and no reason some hardware couldn't keep slim proto and
some kind of unfinanced but encouraged community rewrite of server could
be done, that strips away all the horseshit and addresses bugs and
requests long since ignored.

It's just people are so stupid it never occurred to them that they could
as well just make everything magically work with only a simple plugin!

what I am asking for could be done at the OS level, if they didn't want
to do it as plugins, and either way, would be far simpler and cheaper
than the failed strategy they employed. just look at the reality of
their strategy, server is dead.

No, I'm not saying that. server requires a computer too. (and please
don't tout the failed touch).

What would be better, is that people could use the programs they'd
already have and are familiar with, instead of being forced to use a
server program that sucks. What would be better for Logitech, is that
the resources to do plugins or an OS middleware level layer would be far
less than doing server.

[slim] Win7 firewall and server / duet

2012-11-22 Thread BJW

Hi all,

First post and its b/c I need a guide for dummies.

I have win7 64bit, and a duet with the latest 7.7.3 nightly as of this
posting. I have had the duet for years, but it always seems to have
issues. Lately, the duet has had trouble finding my server and
connecting to it. I did some investigating and troubleshooting, and it
seems the win7 firewall is at fault. If i completely disable the
private network portion of the win7 firewall, server finds the duet.
(sometimes i have to log off/log on, but one way or another, if this
part of the firewall is off, it all works, and if its on, its MIA). For
whatever reason, when LMS install itself, it does not give win7 good
rules for the firewall. This is upsetting.

I tried following the advice here but I got nowhere. I have deleted
all the server related firewall rules, but the rules i am making just
don't work.

If someone would be so kind as to give a truly step by painful step
guide for the dumbest of dummies, that would be wonderful. I need
something that gives me no benefit of intelligence at all. Thanks in
advance!

Re: [slim] Win7 firewall and server / duet

2012-11-22 Thread BJW

I should clarify that in my firewall, Domain Profile and Private
Profile are off, and Public Profile is on. Thats the working
configuration.
