apologies; that was my comment you're quoting above. As noted, on UNIX
systems the interfaces are presented in an ordered way, so it's easy to

But the fix is to download and try the trunk version, which checks all

I was going to say that, but the end result is a per-track flac sent to
the player, no?

So the player ought not to be able to tell the difference from
file-per-track flac, and whole-album+cue flac, since it only ever sees

It's not too hard, and we can help if you can't get it to work. I've
configured *all* my SBs, including Booms, using Net::UDAP, partly
because it's easier than entering things via the remote, even when that
is possible.

Ah, ok; there's no connection between the two, so that doesn't matter.
During the configuration, you're just entering some data into the SBR's
non-volatile memory, including pointing it at your SC server (the NAS).

What system you use to initially configure the SBR is irrelevant.

that should be fine.

That should be fine. You need to connect the SBR via wired ethernet
initially, however, in order to configure it via Net::UDAP. Once
configured, it can be wired or wifi, of course.

> identifying the SBR through SC running on my NAS (connected to SBR by

That should be fine. Note that iPeng connects to SC itself, never to the
SBR, so as long as iPeng can connect to SC on the NAS, via wifi, and SC
can also connect to the SBR - via either wired or wifi - then you should
be fine.

> I assume once my SBR is set up, any devices running SC (such as

do you really intend to have multiple devices running SC? Normally,
you'd have one, and control it from other PCs, iPeng, SBC, etc.

Having multiple SC instances, even sharing a data backend, just means
extra sets of settings to administer.

If you look above, you can see that Steve started with a WAV file
(test.wav) and used the encoder to turn it into an mp3HD file (mp3HD.mp3).

He then used the decoder to turn that mp3HD file into a new WAV file
(mp3HD.wav).

He then compared the two WAV files: the original, and the
WAV->mp3HD->WAV file, and found them to be identical.

Clearly, mp3HD can be described as lossless, at least, if not actually
useful :)

and there is precedent for associating a lossless format with a popular
lossy format, by adding the tag "HD": consider Dolby Digital and DTS in
the DVD world, which are mostly lossy, and the new DD TrueHD and DTS HD
MA, as found e.g. on Blu-Ray, which are lossless.

[slim] all wireless SBs lost after restarting SC; wired SB ok

2009-03-23 Thread Calum Mackay
I just noted an odd thing here: I restarted SC, to enable a few plugins
(line in/out, I believe), and when it was up again I noticed that it had
lost contact with all my wireless SBs: two Receivers and a Boom.

The Receivers were showing the blue light, and the Boom was asking for
network settings.

[in contrast, my one wired SBR was unaffected by the SC restart]

Leaving all alone for some time produced nothing other than frustration.
Power cycling the boxes restored things to normality, and everything is
perfect again.

Is this to be expected? Anything I can do? Should I involve Logitech
support?

Even odder: the Boom was playing internet radio (via my local SC) and
this continued to work throughout, even whilst the Boom was asking for
network settings.

I am not knowingly using SN. I have an account there, and SC knows the
details. My players seem to have registered themselves there, despite me
knowing no PINs. Yet whilst the Boom continued to play, SN said the
players were all "not connected".

all a bit beyond me :)

This is why I like ZFS.

[I ought to declare an interest, as I work for Sun; then again, it's all
open-source, so... :)]

> Interesting thought. Not that familiar with Solaris or ZFS but might
> be worth looking into.

I recommend having a look; try downloading the latest OpenSolaris live
cd and having a play.

ZFS is a copy-on-write filesystem, so snapshots are implemented very
naturally. When you take a snapshot, all that happens is that future
writes to a particular block of a file are redirected, and the original
block is kept for the snapshot, the new block for the "real" filesystem.
It's possible to have thousands of snapshots. Very space efficient.

The GNOME file-manager has an extension to browse the data in snapshots
- which can also be accessed directly - via the "time slider", in
practice very much like MacOS Time Machine, but integrated into the
filesystem.

ZFS also provides various levels of RAID, including striping, mirroring,
and two levels of efficient versions of RAID5 (RAIDZ, RAIDZ2), without
any need for a separate volume manager.

There are SC build instructions for OpenSolaris on the wiki, and I'm
looking towards making an unofficial nightly build regularly available,
in the OpenSolaris IPS pkg format.

Right, and RAID mirroring isn't generally trying to minimise data loss,
it's trying to maximise uptime.

Your rsync gives you something that RAID mirroring doesn't: a window to
detect user error.

RAID mirroring gives something that your rsync doesn't: the ability to
survive disk failure without any loss of availability.

Different goals.

A nice combination might be provided by using the ZFS filesystem, if
you're on Solaris/OpenSolaris (or MacOS). Mirror the disks for
availability, and use ZFS's snapshot facility for protection against
fat-fingers, and even better without having to dedicate twice the disk
space to do it (like rsync does).

That's how I'll be running SC on my new system...

[slim] Spotify: User info stolen from music site

The music streaming service Spotify has been targeted by hackers.

The Swedish company says people's personal details, including e-mail
addresses, dates of birth and addresses, were all stolen.

However, it is thought credit-card details, which were handled by a
third party, have remained secure.

Spotify has apologised for the security lapse and advised users who
registered on the site before 19 December 2008 to change their passwords.

It is thought hackers gained access to user data at the end of 2008,
although the security breach only came to light at the end of last week.

yes indeed, if you're in the UK, and I believe it's the highest quality
was of doing that (~100Kbps (Radio 3: 128Kbps) WMA, although Listen
Again is generally higher ~200Kbps MP3).
