Don't follow what that proved? If you look above, you can see that Steve started with a WAV file (test.wav) and used the encoder to turn it into an mp3HD file (mp3HD.mp3). He then used the decoder to turn that mp3HD file into a new WAV file (mp3HD.wav). He then compared the two WAV files: the original, and the WAV->mp3HD->WAV file, and found them to be identical. Clearly, mp3HD can be described as lossless, at least, if not actually useful :) and there is precedent for associating a lossless format with a popular lossy format, by adding the tag "HD": consider Dolby Digital and DTS in the DVD world, which are mostly lossy, and the new DD TrueHD and DTS HD MA, as found e.g. on Blu-Ray, which are lossless. cheers, calum. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] all wireless SBs lost after restarting SC; wired SB ok
I just noted an odd thing here: I restarted SC, to enable a few plugins (line in/out, I believe), and when it was up again I noticed that it had lost contact with all my wireless SBs: two Receivers and a Boom. The Receivers were showing the blue light, and the Boom was asking for network settings. [in contrast, my one wired SBR was unaffected by the SC restart] Leaving all alone for some time produced nothing other than frustration. Power cycling the boxes restored things to normality, and everything is perfect again. Is this to be expected? Anything I can do? Should I involve Logitech support? Even odder: the Boom was playing internet radio (via my local SC) and this continued to work throughout, even whilst the Boom was asking for network settings. I am not knowingly using SN. I have an account there, and SC knows the details. My players seem to have registered themselves there, despite me knowing no PINs. Yet whilst the Boom continued to play, SN said the players were all "not connected". all a bit beyond me :) thanks much for any comments... cheers, calum. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Not that familiar with Solaris or ZFS but might > be worth looking into. I recommend having a look; try downloading the latest OpenSolaris live cd and having a play. ZFS is a copy-on-write filesystem, so snapshots are implemented very naturally. When you take a snapshot, all that happens is that future writes to a particular block of a file are redirected, and the original block is kept for the snapshot, the new block for the "real" filesystem. It's possible to have thousands of snapshots. Very space efficient. The GNOME file-manager has an extension to browse the data in snapshots - which can also be accessed directly - via the "time slider", in practice very much like MacOS Time Machine, but integrated into the filesystem. ZFS also provides various levels of RAID, including striping, mirroring, and two levels of efficient versions of RAID5 (RAIDZ, RAIDZ2), without any need for a separate volume manager. There are SC build instructions for OpenSolaris on the wiki, and I'm looking towards making an unofficial nightly build regularly available, in the OpenSolaris IPS pkg format. cheers, calum. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Which raid?
jsprag wrote: > Mistaken deletions are the main reason I don't like RAID for my > situation. Loss of data is far more likely to come from fat fingering > than it is from hardware failure. Right, and RAID mirroring isn't generally trying to minimise data loss, it's trying to maximise uptime. Your rsync gives you something that RAID mirroring doesn't: a window to detect user error. RAID mirroring gives something that your rsync doesn't: the ability to survive disk failure without any loss of availability. Different goals. A nice combination might be provided by using the ZFS filesystem, if you're on Solaris/OpenSolaris (or MacOS). Mirror the disks for availability, and use ZFS's snapshot facility for protection against fat-fingers, and even better without having to dedicate twice the disk space to do it (like rsync does).
