Re: [slim] Why shouldn't I jump ship to Sonos?

2013-03-05 Thread GlenL

The only 'gotchas' I can think of which would prevent me personally from
switching are ...

1. No multi tagging support (as mentioned by Mnyb in post #6).
If you use multitagged artists, albumartists or genres, they won't work
as you hope with Sonos

2. No support for the YEAR tag.
Sonos does not support the YEAR tag, so if you like browsing by year you
will lose that with Sonos

3. No 'New Music' option.
Sonos does not have the equivalent of the Squeezebox 'New Music' menu
option.
In other words, you cannot quickly browse the latest 100 or so CDs added
to your collection with Sonos.

If none of the above apply to you, then by all means certainly consider
making the switch. Sonos is a very good system afterall.

Personally though, I would wait a while and see what the Squeezebox
community come up with. Also the Olive One system looks promising. It
may be worth waiting to see what that has to offer.

Re: [slim] Why shouldn't I jump ship to Sonos?

This might be a question for the Sonos forums, but does anyone happen to
know how Sonos deals with soundtracks or compilation albums? As an
example, in the SB world I use Album Artist to group all of my
soundtracks together, and then Artist to keep track of who is playing
which song. Are you saying this will no longer work? I have to pick
 one or the other?

No, that will continue to work with Sonos.

What I was referring to is Squeezebox's support for multitagging within
the ARTIST, ALBUMARTIST and GENRE tags.

For example, if you owned a Travelling Wilbury's CD you could have the
ARTIST tag set to Travelling Wilburys;Bob Dylan;Tom Petty;George
Harrison.
Squeezebox would parse that tag so that when you browsed your Artists,
the Travelling Wilbury's CD would appear under Travelling Wilburys, Bob
Dylan, Tom Petty and George Harrison separately.

Sonos does not support this multi tagging, so on a Sonos system the
Travelling Wilbury's CD would appear under an Artist name of Travelling
Wilburys;Bob Dylan;Tom Petty;George Harrison.

Likewise, if you had a CD you considered to be in two genres, say Rock
and Indie, you could set the GENRE tag to Rock;Indie and Squeezebox
would show the CD under both genres.
With Sonos, the CD would be listed in a genre called Rock;Indie

Hope that explains it a bit better :-)

Not 'out of the box' so to speak.
Sonos relies on UPnP broadcasts to locate devices on the network and as
UPnP broadcasts only work on a single subnet you wouldn't be able to
connect to another Sonos device in a remote location (as the broadcast
packets wouldn't be forwarded).

I think it is possible to use a VPN connection to 'extend' your local
subnet to a remote location and get it to work that way, but you might
be better off checking the Sonos forums for clarification on that.

Re: [slim] Hi-Res Files: A few questions

2011-07-09 Thread GlenL

My first thought would be ... is the CPU in the Guruplug powerful enough
to transcode 24/96 material to FLAC fast enough ?

SB3s do not support 24/96 natively so any 24/96 material has to be
transcoded to 16/48 FLAC by the server before sending it to the SB3.
This takes a reasonable bit of CPU power and I am wondering whether the
Guruplug's CPU is up to the job.
I have no experience with Guruplugs, so I could be on the wrong track
here.

If you have access to a SB Touch (which does natively support 24/96)
you could see if that can play OK.

Alternatively, if you have a fairly decent PC (2Ghz processor or
above), you could install Squeezeserver on that and see if the SB3 can
play OK when connected to that.
If it does, it would indicate the problem is with the Guruplug.

You can stream directly to the Duet controller itself.
I have no idea whether it streams FLAC to FLAC or whether it transcodes
though (somebody else may be able to shed some light on that).

You could connect the Duet controller to the line-in on your sound card
and perhaps achieve what you want that way.

If its sound quality you are concerned about though, I wouldn't have
thought it would be possible to tell the difference between a high
quality 320K MP3 stream and FLAC through your average computer sound
card and speakers (especially with the sound of the computer's fans
humming along in the background)

Re: [slim] Hard drive storage suggestions

2008-10-23 Thread GlenL

Squeezecenter only recognizes one path to the music files so you cannot
add a 2nd,3rd ... etc path.

What you can do though is add a shortcut in your existing music folder
that points to the music folder on any new disk you add.

e.g If your existing music is held in C:\Music and your new disk (D:)
also contains a music folder (D:\Music) then you need to create a
shortcut in C:\Music that points to D:\Music.

When Squeezecenter performs a scan for new music, it will then follow
the shortcut and scan any music in D:\Music.

If you are using a Linux based OS running Squuezecenter I imagine some
sort of symbolic link would achieve the same thing.

I may be wrong but I imagine if you were to connect to Squeezenetwork

If you were using Squeezecenter in the UK with either the AlienBBC or
iPlayer plugins installed and you were connecting your 'German' SB to

In this case, your Squeezcenter server would have a UK based IP address
which the BBC stream would accept.

Presumably you will need to set up the SB3 (and NAS for that matter)

I'm assuming of course your NAS is not running a DHCP server.

If that is the case it might be worthwhile choosing IP addresses that
are in the same subnet as the ones dished out by your current router.
Obviously choose ones that are outside your router's DHCP server
scope.

That way if you do need to plug the NAS or SB3 back into your current
network, they would continue to work without having to mess about
changing IP addresses.

[slim] Evaluating Both Sonos Squeezebox Before Buying - Your Thoughts

2008-08-02 Thread GlenL

Just been on another forum (not Sonos) and a claim was made that
Squeezebox owners/supporters are reluctant/dismissive of potential
buyers trying both Sonos and Squeezebox systems before deciding on
which one to purchase.

When questioned on this, it came to pass that nobody had ever seen a
post where a Squeezebox owner/supporter had actually stated there was
no reason to try both systems.
However it was stated that when a Sonos owner/supporter suggests people
try both systems, Squeezebox owners/supporters don't actually fall over
themselves replying to the post in agreement.

As a result, can I ask the following questions ?

Q: As a Squeezebox owner/supporter do you support the idea of potential
buyers trying both Sonos and Squeezebox systems before deciding on which
one suits their needs best ?

If you are against such a suggestion, could you state your reasons why
?

Thanks

Re: [slim] How to make SC keep out of some folders?

2008-06-26 Thread GlenL

Could you change the security settings on the specific album
folders/directories so the account you run SqueezeCenter under is
denied access to them ?

Not sure how SqueezeCenter rescan would react to being denied access to
a specific subfolder, I assume it would just bypass it and carry on to
the next folder/directory.

Worth a try.

If you are running Windows on your server box, you can download compiled
versions of LAME from here http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php

If you are running Linux, this might be a good a start point as any
http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.php#Binaries

I think you also have to enable scrobbling on each individual player as
well.
Off the top of my head, in the player settings on the SqueezeCenter web
interface there is an option to enable scrobbling.
I believe that needs to be set on.

Re: [slim] Low quality on remote connection...

2008-06-17 Thread GlenL

The bit rate of the tracks you are playing may be exceeding the upload
speed of your internet connection.

What is the upload speed of your internet connection ?
It is most likely far less than your download speed.

For example, if you are trying to stream 320k MP3s and your internet
upload speed is only 256K you are going to have problems.

I'm thinking it may be a timing issue of some sort.

This thread http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21124 may
be worth a look.

Haven't tried it myself so I can't comment but it sounds like it might
achieve what you want.

Re: [slim] How can I change stream.mp3 location?

2008-05-09 Thread GlenL

I'm afraid your post does not appear to make much sense (no offence)

Typing http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 into Winamp (for example) will
cause Winamp to look on the local machine for an mp3 stream on port
9000.

If you have SqueezeCenter running on a machine with an IP address of
nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn, you can access the mp3 stream on it from another
computer by opening http://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn:9000/stream.mp3 in your
media player.

Perhaps if you post exactly what it is you are trying to achieve it may
be possible to provide you with a better answer.

At the moment, I am not exactly sure what you are asking :-)

Re: [slim] How can I change stream.mp3 location?

2008-05-09 Thread GlenL

I have just fired up SqueezeCenter and I can now see what you mean :-)

Interestingly enough the link to the SoftSqueeze download knows which
computer and port SqueezeCenter is running on and would work from any
machine if clicked on, but the link to the stream.mp3 does not and
assumes localhost:9000.

Personally I would say that is a minor bug.

I don't know enough about the internal workings of SqueezeCenter to say
whether or not changing the settings.txt is the going to cause any
issues. Perhaps someone who knows more than I do will add their
thoughts :-)

Glad to hear you got it working though.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox silent, but Softsqueeze ok

2008-01-10 Thread GlenL

If you change the display on the Squeezebox so it shows the VU meters
(analogue or digital) do they flicker indicating music is being
received ?

If so, it may be an issue with the cabling from the Squeezebox to the
amplifier/powered speakers.
Either that or the volume control is set way down :-)

If they don't flicker it would indicate an issue with the Slimserver
side of things.
Unfortunately my knowledge of resolving Slimserver issues is sorely
lacking so I can't offer any advice on that :-(
