There is NO file selection feature in LMS.
You have to declare a directory to LMS, and place this file in this
 directory.
If you just want to play a flac file located on a USB stick, and then
disconnect the stick and forget about this file, LMS behavior is a
 nonsense.

Not True, This feature has been around since pre LMS, it's just non
intuitive.

Get the file path to the file / folder / directory of interest

In the Web Interface

Paste this into the Internet Radio - Tune In URL Field

Click on the play (Tune in) or Add Buttons

See your desired files queued up or played using the file reference ,
rather than a stream URL.

Result.

For Bonus Points, work out the request / command sent to LMS generated
by this interaction, then embed it in a shell extension, so you could
play the file directly from the file system (in much the same way as
the foobar2000 Shell / File Explorer Context Menu additions) - Or have
an app you could drag and drop the file onto to play them, or whatever
Operating system dependent mechanism works for you.

The Capability is there - its just how you expose it in a useful
manner.

 Thanks for the tip.
But when you are used to normal music software interface, I doubt
somebody can call that user friendly and easy to use.
The option to copy the file to the library and delete it after is also
an option, but certainly not as logic and as fast as playing it with
 normal software.

Here's another Hack that allows you to browse music on a mounted drive
( or elsewhere that's not part of your music library. ) , without
copying

Add a Shortcut at the top level of your music directory (Symbolic
Link) to where your USB mounts (e.g. G:\ ) , and name the shortcut ,
say USB_DRIVE

(This approach allowed support of multiple physical drives when SBS
only supported a single top level music directory)

Then you can Browse Music Folder - USB_DRIVE , and away you go ...

Have you tried it with the Music Folder blank

If not then you'll get sound from one or more sources, but not stereo

but it would be fun to set one Radio up for the left channel and another
one for the right. Could increase Radio sales, although WAF might be an
 issue :)

Couldn't you just simulate the effect of a balance control by varying
the individual volumes independently ?

Obviously not as elegant as a single balance control, but still.

Re: [slim] Simple question? How to download and album and listen to it right away?

2009-11-05 Thread Grahame

As posted above, if your new music resides in/under your Music
Folder then Just use Browse Music Folder and, well, browse to the
folder the music is in. As a side effect, this adds the music to the
music library.

If, however, your new music does not reside in/under your music folder,
or you only want to listen to something, without adding it to you music
library e.g. podcast, something on a visiting usb stick etc,
Then you can use the Tune In URL feature from the web interface to
point to a file or folder, and use the Tune In or Add buttons as
appropriate.

This has been mentioned previously
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42835
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41470
and probably elsewhere.

What would be really neat, is if someone could come up with a shell
extension, so this capability is available directly in the file explorer
context menu - similar to foobar2000s play in, enqueue in foobar2000
options

(Note: I understand some of this is windows specific, but I the
approach is general)

Re: [slim] idea for next product: a Squeeze-pod!

The device you specified has existed in various forms already.

Consider the following as adjuncts to an SB based system.

Stream via http://slimserverIP:9000/stream.mp3

As mentioned above - controller + iPhone/Touch

Play (supported) media locally , or stream over wi-fi. iPhone has has
streaming over 3G if your server is connected to the internet

1) Wi-fi + removable flash memory cards: Nokia internet tablets
(770, N800, N810, N900)
play (supported) media locally , or stream over wi-fi.

2) Sansa Clip plus. Has removeable flash card. Plays flac out of the
box.
Has FM receiver. Play output of SB on an FM transmitter, and away you
go :)

Re: [slim] New iPod Touch possible candidate for SS controller?

Not to mention you can now pick up the 770, for less than the price
drop of the iPhone.

Nor forgetting that the 770/800's have a 4.1 800x480 225ppi screen

Whereas for Apple
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/03/11/apple-iphone-disappointing-lcd-screen.html
The screen is 320 pixels across and 480 pixels high, wth a 160 ppi
(pixels per inch) pixel density. This is a fairly typical resolution
among current smartphones and really isn’t that bad. However, Apple is
known for innovation and trend setting design. This resolution is
neither innovative nor trend setting.

Re: [slim] As good as a Transporter (almost...) :-)

2007-04-23 Thread Grahame

I just tried this with an SB3 and instance of softsqueeze
as a proof of concept - it's a hoot.

1) Get to two SB'3 - We will call them Left and Right.
2) Consider Left the Master, and Right the Slave, so sync
Right with Left using settings-synchronize
3) Use the web interface to set up the screensaver / now playing
options etc - e.g. Left = Now playing info, Right = VU Meters
4) Disable the IR remote commands on Right via the web interface,
so that only Left is controlled via the remote.

Enjoy your poor mans transporter!

300x300 - ish, on 6.5.1 nightlies after this fix, I've noticed the
following.

At hourly intervals (consistent with the cache purge fix), Lots of disk
activity, some Slim CPU activity, (indicating its I/O bound) lasting for
between say 3-8 minutes. This stalls all clients of slimserver
(indicating slimserver is busy on its main thread?).

Observable effects.

Playing Slim devices:
Buffer empties, not refreshed, music stops. Unresponsive to any command
until disk activity finished. So thats only about 90% uptime on an
hourly basis when listening :(

Non playing slim devices running clock screensaver:
Clock does not update - giving good feedback of when issue started -
and how long it lasts.

Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Is a one size fits all solution appropriate for all cases?
Would some logging and recording help?
(e.g. starting purge... purge ended ... took X mins)
Log the elapsed time for a purge, and if its longer than some threshold
- say the buffer size on a SB, defer the next purge, or take into
account free space on the disk, or whatever).

Moving cache purge to separate thread? ( is this possible?, what about
cache coherency etc)

Any more info you need?

I've opened this as Bug 4432

[slim] Re: SBM (Squeezebox Mobile)?

2005-12-10 Thread Grahame

I can confirm the included audio player on the Nokia 770 can handle
streaming MP3's from slimserver over its built in 802.11g WiFi.

(Slimserver transcodes from stored flacs to mp3 in my case - slimserver
allows you to set the bitrate the mp3's are streamed at;
320Kps sounds very acceptable :) )

It's built in browser - together with the handheld skin make it a very
nice (albeit expensive) remote control.

Issues for the real world, are secure remote access to your slimserver,
and latency / bandwidth issues for access.

The open nature / features of the slimserver platform make things
like this possible.

The 770 at the moment doesn't have a Java VM - so no softsqueeze,
although given the open/documented protocol, it may be possible to
write a native squeeze client for the 770 using the maemo SDK.

The question is, what would it give you, over the capabilities of audio
playback, controlled by a web interface via the 770's small form factor
- but high-ish (800x480) resolution touch screen?

I ought to upload a screen capture util so you can see for yourself.
