RE: [slim] Re: The remote is crap!

2006-08-02 Thread Iain Shaw

I know Mark, I apologise for that. That was rude.

I think the rest of it was fair.

Ironically, I actually like the Slim remote. Does the job, snappy
enough, feels OK. I'm stil using my SliMP3s and I love them to bits.

You're right, it does look like flame bait.

RE: [slim] Re: The remote is crap!

2006-08-01 Thread Iain Shaw
I'm a long time fan of Slim - owning SliMP3 x 3 and a couple of
squeezeboxes. I stopped posting here after I got a cr**py response from
a long -standing list stalwart suggesting that I shouldn't post negative
posts for fear of upsetting the developers. Thanks Jack, it really
helped that. Shut me up anyway.

I've lurked ever since.

But I can no longer keep quiet. Slim stuff is cool, Slim stuff sounds
great and Slim stuff doesn't compete with Sonos.

A Nokia 770 is a really nice bit of kit and it's really clever that you
can control Slim with it...and I've got a 770 and I really like it. But
the Sonos controller is an awesome way to control music on a Sonos
system and the two things do not compare. The 770 can control your
windows and your sprinklers and that's really clever. The Sonos
Controller can't because all it does is do a really good job, as in a
better job, of controlling music on the system that it was built for.

counterpoint to the Sonos remote - in your dreams.

I'll buy a couple of Transporters because I want one for our Showroom
and I've got a client who is going to love it but I can't get too
sentimental about this product. It's still too geeky to put into most
of my customers. I sell a load of Sonos and I get NO service requests
on them. Like NEVER.

I've just reread this and I know it read like flamebait but it wan't
meant to be. It's a great product, I really like it. Multiroom audio
is both a passion for me and something that pays the mortgage. The Slim
product and the SlimServer software is not ready to be included in our
range of customer offerings.

Kudos to Sean and Dean and the team for the Transporter. Can't wait for
mine

I agree.

It's the SB internals I can't do anything about. The remote I can
always do something about - replacing it with a universal remote, for
example, which I've done (my Marantz RC1400 that came with my receiver
handles it just fine).

Some have suggested that SB offer upgraded remotes as an optional
accessory. I'm all for this, if you want/need an upgraded remote, pay
for it.

Offer SD-customized Nokia 770s, for instance. That would give a nice
counterpoint to the Sonos remote, and it can be used for general web
browsing and as a PDA too.

RE: [slim] Re: New Slim Devices Product? The Transporter per6moons.com??

2006-07-25 Thread Iain Shaw

You have to feel that 20% is one of the more random stats produced. I'd
trust the 100K products sold more. I've got 4 of the rascals - SB1s and
SliMP3s though. I like the look of the Transporter though. :)

Obviously, you're nowhere near the target market. I'm not either. I'm
pretty sure SD's marketing department know what they're doing here.

In the BBC article today, Slim noted that 20% of their customers are
audiophiles. It makes a lot of sense for them to cater to this market.

[slim] SS6 - Lack of confidence

2005-04-02 Thread Iain Shaw
I know there a number of threads aroundf talking about should I /
shouldn't I upgrade to 6

My experience
I think I've got a modest requirement running on reasonable kit - only
5000 tracks on a P4 machine with 1GB RAM - 250GB disk. Machine runs W2K
Server and isn't used for too much else - houses a lot of digital photos
and video rips but doesn't get a hard life, doesn't run desktop apps etc.

I was really looking forward to 6 - Iv'e got 3 SliMP3s and one original
SqueezeBox. And I'm disappointed. It locks up, occasionaly vanishes,
suffers long pauses when being asked to Browse Music Folder. I've been
a member of this list for a year or so and I don't normally post
whinges. And when people do I know they can get a fairly robust response.

But my point it this: My library is small, my hardware is more than
capable, I'm not doing anyting on the Server machine, my files are not
exotic, just a mix of MP3 ripped with EAC. The library plays
beautifully with a rival machine (x4), albeit a more expensive and new
one.I love my Slims, I just hate the fact that they don't work
as I would like them too.

Does anyone else have this constant unease that their setup is just not
robust enough. If you flame me with complaints that I'm not giving
sufficient info for diagnostics etc, you're missing the point. I'm a
fan, I've got a billy bog-standard setup with a lot of oomph (more
than!), the Server software is up to release 6 and it doesn't work
properly. Yes I could move my server to one of my Linux boxes, but why
should I?

hopefully you will take this in the spirit it has been written. I'm not
satisfied the product is good enough and I love the product at the same
time if that makes any sense.
