[slim] Re: Slimserver wants a FAST machine

2006-11-29 Thread TonyCharman

... with you Mr MelonMonkey, I run Slimserver from a QNAP TS-101 NAS
that I bought specifically for the job as I liked the idea of a
dedicated machine with a small power need. It's just too slow!

Streaming seems fine. Maybe I use it differently from most others but
I want view and play around with my collection from my PDA, Laptop or
PC. Doing so is just like, as you say, loading a graphically intensive
site from a poor/ overloaded server. And how many times have you hung
around for the pages to load?!!

It spoils the whole experience for me - may have to put Slimserver back
on a (fast) PC. Looking forward to seeing if Logitech have some ideas
on this - perhaps they will add track discreet advance/back buttons to
the top of the machine as well - oh the number of times I've wished for
those!!

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 iTunes

2006-10-09 Thread TonyCharman

sbooth,
this post has been sort of continued somewhere else in the forum.
Essentially it is not currently possible for qnap to see a shortcut to
a folder on an outside machine on the same network.

But then that probably leaves the new Squeezebox / Infrant NAS
partnership with immedaite obvious limitations...

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-09-07 Thread TonyCharman

After a few messages backwards and forwards to QNAP
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) on the subject, I got the following reponse:

About your request, we didn’t support yet.
You cannot use a shortcut on TS-101.

So unless Paul is able to provide a work around, for the moment there
isn't a solution. But that leaves me wondering how the Infrant
ReadyNAS NV Squeezebox solution that Slimdevices have packaged up
recently, is working. Presumably it too has these (and iTunes)
limitations.

Tried creating several links from within the music folder using windows
shortcuts, but it wont follow them. When I follow the links from
within the /music folder on the Qnap, I can see the destination files
 fine, so the links work..but...

Slimserver just sees 'name of the linked folder'.lnk If I scan
database, it just says nothing found. If I put an MP3 file within the
directory, it says 1 file found, so it is obviously looking in the
right directory, just not following the links.

 Any ideas ?

I was just about to post a query on this...

I eagerly await the solution. In particular it would be great to get
ts-101 hosted slimserver to see iTunes (for playlists etc).

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-07-22 Thread TonyCharman

Hi,
I used to have the local weather forecast as my standby screensaver,
but it may have been pre-qnap.

I have registered with Weather.com and put the rss for my local area
into rss feeds - but there doesn't seem to be a way of just selecting
this one feed. Selecting RSS news ticker as the screensaver loops
through all the rss feeds listed in home / server settings / plugins.

Could someone document the correct way to get the weather feed onto the
Standby screen - so that the time and weather are shown, and stay
there.

Additionally I have put in a plugin request to Paul at Prog AV for
WeatherTime screensaver which fetches the data from weather.com and
shows graphical icons on your squeezebox display:
http://inside.glnetworks.de/2006/03/11/weathertime-screensaver-plugin-for-slimserver

As a side comment, it takes me and I am sure many others a while to try
to find answers to questions relating to Slimserver running on the
TS-101. I can't help thinking that all the information that is
splattered in this SlimDevices forum thread could be better indexed. I
have the ability and resources to put something like a dedicated qnap -
slimserver wiki into place if enough people think it would be useful.
Let me know.

2006-07-05 Thread TonyCharman

re-booting. Then the same with the AlienBBC 1.04. Slimserver is now
not responding.

I have looked at the errors.log and it has the following: useradd: user
slimserver exists
mkdir: cannot create directory `/opt/slimserver': File exists
mkdir: cannot create directory `/opt/slimserver': File exists

Can anyone shed some light on this,

Many thanks.

[slim] Qnap TS-101 iTunes

2006-07-05 Thread TonyCharman

Hi,

I have been trying to get Slimserver to pick up my iTunes library file
so that I can get it's playlists. The file is in it's default location
of C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\My Documents\My Music\iTunes .

Could someone help me with the address to put into the Home/Server
Settings/iTunes/ iTunes Music Library. Would it be something like
(ipaddress of machine running iTunes)\Documents and Settings\Tony\My
Documents\My Music\iTunes ??

Many thanks in advance

[slim] Qnap TS-101 Slimserver

2006-04-06 Thread TonyCharman

Not sure if I am missing something obvious, but here goes:

Bought my Qnap TS-101 (from Scan) advertised as Slimserver ready.
But after installing and initiating the drive I see no mention of
Slimserver anywhere - nor in the documentation or the Qnap website.

Am I supposed to install Slimserver myself onto the unit? If so, does
anyone have instructions to do so.

I look forward to your comments, Tony
