Use Inguz at -17db. No clipping there.

Did you apply replay-gain tags to these tracks? The volume adjustment
isn't automatic... you'll need to apply tags using foobar2000 or some
other tagger that can calculate the value for you.

[slim] Spontaneous and Unsolicited Gush of Delight

2008-12-03 Thread Yannzola

I've been using my Squeezeboxen for years now and have been amazed to
see how the product has evolved. I was terrified when logitech took
over... but I've been =very= pleasantly surprised. Customer service has
gotten more responsive, bugs are fixed in record time, and wonderful new
products are being released!
Oh... and the latest beta of SC (7.3) rocks!
I gush.
Thanks to all involved in making my experience such a lovely one. Keep
up the fabulous work.

Just to clarify the above: Overall behaviour is vastly improved in

nuisance, as restarting the Controller (power off on) re-establishes
the connection without a hitch.

2006-11-04 Thread Yannzola

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29368

Question: What do playlists mean to you?

- Never or very rarely use them
- Not a big problem: use static playlists for parties or similar,
  current features ok
- Use static playlists a lot, would like to see better features for
  managing them
- Want smart or dynamic playlists. iTunes integration and/or plugins
  usable (but could be better!).
- Smart or dynamic playlists are very important, current options not
  good enough, must be improved
- Critical: Playlist handling must be improved or I'm out of here

I just don't really grok the concept of playlists. I abstain.

What I want is the ability to interact with my collection in a variety
of ways. For instance: I want to organize songs and albums by
genre/year/title/flavor/etc. I want Slimserver to learn what I like and
dislike, and to allow me to make decisions based on this... or to have
it make suggestions and suprise me. I want to press a button and have
music play that is appropriate for different situations.

I really don't care what metaphor is used... Dynamic Playlists, Smart
Lists, Magic Mixes, etc.

Oh my. Just heard the news.

Congratulations and good-bye.

The spirit of Slim-Devices =will= be lost within 6-months, regardless
of what the Logitech execs may have informed anyone at your last

It aint pretty... been there, done that.

On the plus side, many of the Slim Devices founders are now (hopefully)

Just heard the news so am of course quite late to the discussion. Read
most of the posts and can see many different futures ahead for SD and
Logitech but to my mind the most likely is that Logitech will create a
good or perhaps very good music device - with a much larger market.
Slim Devices had the chance to create a GREAT music device - with a
 much smaller market.

As much as the Logitech folks might like to think of themselves as a
company they are not, they will, in the end, be driven by a passion for
the bottom line and not a passion for musical excellence. A company
 their size has no choice.

During this transition we will read all the perfectly crafted messages
stating how involved Logitech will remain in the current community, and
how dedicated they are to the SqueezeBox.

This is not a knock on Logitech as they are obligated so say such
things in our modern corporate culture.

I only hope they can come to this table and be honest about their
corporate responsibities, which must come first as the nature of
reality in the corporate world, and not pretend to be able to attend to
the existing audio community established here, let alone be willing. The
two directions are simply at cross purposes and cannot exist in a
 company of that size.

I would also assume that this forum will change radically as well.
Again, out of necessity. Nightly builds will disappear, as they must. A
more consumer friendly product (or many) will surface very shortly and
the transporter seems VERY out of place in a world of consumer driven
products, can't see how it can survive.

I won't bid a farewell as of yet but it will come soon enough, and to
that end i would like to thank all of the people here who have made the
SB such a great device and most of all to the community that has a added
lot to my knowledge in a kind and courteous way.

 Best to all,

2006-04-06 Thread Yannzola

Attached is my latest log... I've left it unedited, so it's a bit long.
I used the debug version of Trackstat to generate it. Hope it's useful.
At a glance, it does seem like something wierd is occuring around
unicode characters...

The crash was triggered in Fishbone, by clicking on the play entire
playlist arrow at the top of the left hand playlist area.

[slim] Mapping Random Mix to remote Shuffle Key

Is it possible to add the Random Mix options to the remote's shuffle

Essentially, I'd like to be able to press shuffle on my remote and
toggle through the existing shuffle options as well as random mix (by
album, by artist, random year, etc.). Can I set this up myself by
creating a custom .map?

Is the idea worthy of a feature request? Having the shuffle button
toggle through random mix options seems fairly intuitive to me (the
idea of shuffling encompassing mixing isn't too big a stretch) Any
caveats?

I agree Mesue. There is a bug currently posted which might address your

Bugzilla Bug 2333: Removable (temporary) music folders

Although I don't like the proposed solution (dumping files into a temp

It seems to me that having the ability to specify more than one Music

I asked a similiar question a while back... my issue was that I wanted
to control Slimserver playback via the standard (read:pc) media keys
built in to most modern keyboards. Since these media keys are not the
same across all platforms (I assume)... and since many of these
keyboards are =not= configurable... I asked if some sort of user
configurable media key-command setting could be added to Slimserver
itself. I remember someone mentioning that only certain Web UI
interfaces are capable of parsing these kinds of keystroke commands...
ExBrowse in particular (not sure about the others).

Unfortunately, the issue never generated any interest.

From what I gather, it doesn't sound like there is an easy way to

Because folks =do= mess with it... for instance: when using replaygain

[slim] Keyboard shortcut commands for Slimserver?

I realize that this would be difficult to implement accross platforms,

Play or pause a file. CTRL+P
Stop playback. CTRL+S
Mute the volume. F8
Increase the volume. F10
Decrease the volume. F9
Play the previous item. CTRL+B
Play the next item. CTRL+F
Rewind. CTRL+SHIFT+B
Fast-forward. CTRL+SHIFT+F

I know many new keyboards now come with standard with mapped volume,

[slim] Re: A slicker UI for SlimServer?

2005-08-08 Thread Yannzola

I think I understand why a browser based UI was chosen (cross platform
compatible, network friendly, portable, yadda yadda). And for many
applications, a web UI is good enough.

Unfortunately all of these browser interfaces suffer from =seriously=
rudimentary file management ability... and while some advanced
web-based file management features do exist, they tend to be platform
dependant.

No drag and drop.
No multiple item selection/actions (check boxed lists are a poor hack)
No contextual actions available off of individual items (i.e. right
click or hover options).

In addition... they waste valuable screen real estate with unnecessary
internet nav chrome, consistently have cache, screen refresh, and/or
cookie problems... the list goes on.

If foobar had the ability to communicate directly with Slimserver, I'd
use it in a heartbeat over the web UI. It may not be sexy... but at
least it allows you to manage multiple files the right way.

[slim] FF/REW Enhancements ...?

2005-08-02 Thread Yannzola

In addition to automatically displaying the now playing screen w/ the
remaining time and progress bar on pressing FF of REW, I think another
helpful and intuitive feature would be for the x4,x8,x12 speeds to ramp
up automatically similiary to how the volume , or title scrolling
currently works on hold. Most MP3 and CD players work this way... On
button release, the player could either automatically start playing
(similiar to a CD Player) or it could continue as it does now, until
Play,Pause,or the opposite scanning direction button is pressed
(similiar to some MP3 players and most video players). Perhaps this
could be user configurable? Or perhaps the two could be rooled into
one... where tapping the FF button skips 20 secs forward, and REW
skips 5 sec back and resumes play automatically. Holding down the same
FF/REW for longer than x seconds (user selectable?) would begin the
automatic ramping described above.

What do others think?

[slim] Re: The SB2 appears to have some serious flaws!

2005-08-01 Thread Yannzola

I'm sorry if I'm mistaken... but isn't there already a Favorites plugin
available for streams? I use it all the time ( for shoutcast at
least...). Would something similiar (applied universally) help to solve
this problem?

What if this functionality was accessible from =any= track now
playing, using the current Favorites plugin interface convention
(right arrow to toggle add/remove)?. No extra buttons would be needed
on the remote, the extra functionality would be contextually tied to
the song currently playing via the directional arrows. Once you've got
all your Favorites picked, a playlist is created which you could rename
(via remote, if possible???) and save.

However, my =favorite= idea mentioned so far involves implementing some
form of ratings system... This would be great!

The ratings info could be written to a tracks ID metadata... in fact I
think RATING is already an unofficial tag. Perhaps Ratings could
even replace zapped and favorites all together... songs you
=really= don't like are rated *, your favorites , etc. All of
these ratings create their own playlists, each containing the songs of
that particular rating an instance of any of these lists could be
Saved as a renamed playlist (similiar to the current Zapped list
behaves )Now what would be super cool would be if actions could
then be performed on these playlists... for instance Never play songs
rated * or Only play songs rated

work. however, I'm given the impression that this is not what that bug

is after, nor does it seem like a plugin would be accepted as a
 solution.

Hm OK.
In the comments area of that bug, Dean mentions CUE sheets as a
possible solution. How about a plugin (or whatever) that writes (or
rewrites if one is already present ) a CUE sheet on the fly with a
modified start and/or end time for the selected track(s)? SQ UI wise,
you would simply enter the new start and/or end times using the
keypad... the web interface could be fancier.

Mike,
No one believes me but IE seems to somehow scramble Zips posted
on this forum. Why, I dunno... but using Firefox =does work=.

I think slim's web server was having trouble yesterday, as several
people were having trouble downloading file attachments from these
 forums.

The problem is still occurring in IE. However, the same ZIP downloaded
via Firefox opens without error. To be clear: I'm not some rabid
Firefox evangelist, I am merely providing a solution that works for
those who want access to these ZIPs.

 For good reason!

Bottom line, until you learn how to diagnose and clear the problem
w/IE, you're going to continue to have trouble. Keep using Firefox if
it works for you, and you don't want to resolve *your* IE troubles.

Mr.C,

Yeah... I had the same problem originally. It's an IE binary parsing
thang. Use firefox, and the ZIP remains uncorrupted.

[slim] Re: SB2: Fast forward with FLAC?

2005-07-27 Thread Yannzola

I figured this was some sort of bug, but hadn't gotten around to
bitching about it yet.

Could someone please explain this to me? Regardless of how long I press
the FFwd/RW buttons while a (natively decoded) FLAC is playing, it
always jumps to the next track. Standard behaviour is for a short tap
to track across titles, and a prolonged hold to track inside the song...
with play resuming once the button is lifted. In addition, some kind of
progress bar + time stamp would come in handy.

Am I wrong? Does this feature indeed already exist? If so... uh... how
do I get it to work?
Thanks!
y.

Native FLAC support in the firmware; allows pure lossless CD audio

Does this mean I should be able to fast forward when listening to
  FLACs using SB2?

as individual tracks, yes. Full albums, split up via a cue sheet
 (internal or
external) still wont work for fwd or rewind just yet.

Ah. Yes. User error it is.
This was probably all in the users manual, eh?... which in all the
excitment... I ... uh... haven't actually looked at yet.

The above functions =seem= intuitive enough, yet I was stumped.

I wonder if I somehow missed it, or if I've run into some sort of bug
on my end. I'll look into it tonight.

There is no feature to hold scan until release.

No prob.

kdf Wrote:

If you have your now playing display set to show the time index or

Aha! I'll give this a try... I think the lack visual feedback may have
confused me.

I still don't quite grok this plugin (haven't installed it yet). It
allows you to create bookmarks inside of a song and to jump from one
point to the other, right? Very cool. Now... if only you could save these
bookmarked start/stop times on a track by track basis, you'd have a very
clever solution to Bug#731
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731) while leveraging the
existing UI.

dean Wrote:

Yannzola asked if it would be down sampled which is probably a misuse

Yup, it =was= misuse of the word on my part... but Robin caught the
right drift. What I meant to ask was if the replaygain process was
indeed lossy, similiar to how the digital volume control is lossy.
Which it sounds like it is, if I understand correctly.

Is this a subjectively noticable loss?
