Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-08-11 Thread alex_london

Assuming you have iPeng, you can do this right now - first, use safari
to browse to "http://:9000/stream.mp3". This will
bring up a media player in safari.

Now hit the "home" button, and from the springboard launch iPeng. You
should see the player listed as "Mozilla from ".
Select it, and play away!

Your actions may be a bit delayed, as your SC is converting to mp3 in
the background, but otherwise it works perfectly for me!

If you don't have iPeng, you could use a web browser on another device
to control the player. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find a way
to browse to another "tab" in the iPhone Safari browser while it's
playing a stream - which is why I use iPeng to control it.

Re: [slim] Slim server not starting: mySQL error in Event Log

2007-04-12 Thread alex_london

I have exactly the same problem with my version of 6.5.1.

Trying to start from the Perl source files, this is an install in a
"fresh" folder (I still have my 6.5.0 install in a different folder
which works just fine).

Running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2 on a P4 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM and
all data on a local RAID array (not that it matters as SlimServer
doesn't get that far).

Tried starting it again, after the Cache folder and pref file are
created, but I get the same error message.

As I mentioned above, SlimServer 6.5.0 works just fine (again running
from Perl source files). I've attached the command prompt output as
well as the event log message I'm getting.

Thanks

[slim] Re: Recommended Pre-N/MIMO Wireless Access Point?

2006-08-15 Thread alex_london

Heuer - thanks for the suggestions... I've tried most of that, so, with
the exception of going over power, my only solution is to get a
dedicated AP to replace the built-in one of my ADSL router.

Waiting until the 802.11n standard is ratified is not really an option;
after all, spending £100 to get things working properly for the next
year or so is worth it, in my opinion... it's money I would otherwise
have spent on fixing my head after banging it on the wall all the time
;)

[slim] Recommended Pre-N/MIMO Wireless Access Point?

2006-08-14 Thread alex_london

Hi all,

I'm having low signal/reliability problems with the SB2 in my bedroom.
This connects via WLAN to my ADSL router (which has a built-in wireless
access point). The signal strength I'm getting changes from as low as
20% up to around 60%, but never higher (it averages around 30-35%).

I've had low signal problems in other areas of the house, and as I
can't move my ADSL router, I was considering buying a dedicated
wireless access point.

So I'm thinking of going for one of the Pre-N/MIMO devices out there...
will they make any difference for non-MIMO clients (specifically the
SB2/SB3)? Any recommended (i.e. tried and tested) models?

Thanks!

Nigel,

Have a look at my previous post:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=84774#post84774

I'm running both 6.5 and 6.2.1 and can quickly flip between the two.
You need to make sure you're running the same firmware on both
otherwise you'll have to update your squeezeboxes every time you switch
SlimServer versions.

I'm using 6.5 AND 6.2.1 here... both on XP...

Have 6.2.1 installed as usual, but the service is set to "manual" (so I
can start it when i want, e.g. if the current incarnation of 6.5 is too
buggy).

I've also installed ActiveState Perl - pretty painless, if you ask me -
and I download the Perlscripts version of 6.5, and extract to a
different folder to my 6.2.1 install (e.g. C:\Program
Files\SlimServer-beta\).

I've also overwritten the 6.5 "firmware" folder with the 6.2.1 folder,
as I found firmware 29 not to agree with my wireless network, whereas
28 is fine. This also means that regardless which version I start, I
don't have to run around my place updating the firmware on all my
Squeezeboxes...

Because I didn't want to go through tweaking and re-configuring 6.5, I
also copied the slimserver.pref file from 6.2.1 into my 6.5 install
folder, and changed the cachedir value to the relevant path (so each
installation has its own cachedir).

Now I can run either the service (6.2.1) or the perl version (6.5) -
and there's no convoluted install/uninstall process when I download a
new nightly: I just extract the ZIP into a temporary folder, then move
all files/folders from there - except the "firmware" folder - into my
SlimServer-beta folder. Next time I start the perl version, I'm running
the new build...

Works for me (so far)!

Just my 2c (1.145p, actually)...

[slim] Playing songs not in library

2005-12-18 Thread alex_london

Hi all...

Is there any way I can play songs that are not in my SlimServer library
(and keep them out of it after playing them)?

My library consists of FLAC files only, all ripped from my CD
collection. On occassion however, I'll get a stray MP3 or other sound
file that I might want to play too...

However, as I know these files haven't gone through the process of
being properly tagged etc I don't want them in my library messing up my
carefully crafted database!!! Not to mention the fact that they're
compressed using a lossy codec!

Is there any way this can be done?

Cheers,

[slim] Changing file scan order

2005-10-10 Thread alex_london

Hi all...

I buy quite a few CDs on a weekly basis (5-10) - I rip all my new
purchases before listening to them, and it's easy for me to see what
the latest items are when I want to go through the new material. I've
found the "New Music" view to be quite useful in this respect.

On the odd occasion however (usually after upgrades/patches, or more
often, changes in tag data of some tracks/albums), I like to clear out
the database file and perform a rescan. Doing this messes up the "New
Music" view, as everything is scanned alphabetically. Right now I trick
SlimServer by removing the latest 10-15 CDs before the rescan and
putting the files back afterwards, but obviously this still doesn't
keep the order spot on.

Is there a way I can change this behaviour so the files/folders are
scanned by date/time created (or modified)? I know I probably won't be
able to do this "out of the box", but if anyone could point me in the
direction of a hack/patch I could apply it would be greatly
appreciated.

Cheers!

[slim] Statistics not working?

2005-10-05 Thread alex_london

Hi all...

I've just noticed that the song statistics page isn't updating
properly. I'm runnning version 6.1.1 - 3774.

When I clear the database (either by deleting the files or doing a wipe
& rescan), the statistics seem to work fine. But after a while they dont
update anymore... all I see now is a page (around 50 lines) of songs,
all saying they've been played just 1 time. None of these are recent
ones I've played, so it must have stopped updating a few days ago in
this case.

I've only just noticed this recently (never really looked at the
statistics page in depth before), and haven't found any bug reports
relating to this... so I thought maybe it's something with my setup
that's screwey.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Alex

[slim] Universal (All-for-one) remote controls?

2005-08-26 Thread alex_london

Hi,

As with most people, the number of remote controls I have in order to
keep everything working is beginning to take up more space than my
living room can afford! At the moment I have 6 controls, and throw in a
mobile phone and DECT cordless to confuse things even more you can
understand how chaotic it can be!

I've looked at a number of universal remote controls to help solve this
crisis, but I'm unable to find the "perfect" solution... though I think
I'm getting close.

One option I was considering was a PDA-based solution. This would allow
me to run the Telcanto software to control my Squeezebox2/SlimServer via
WiFi, and, using remote control software, control the rest of my kit via
IR too. But PDAs are fiddly at best, as they are not designed to be used
as remote controls. Their touch screens dont respond well to grubby
fingers all over them, and their IR LED doesn't have the range of a
dedicated unit.

An other option would be to get a dedicated all-in-one remote, but I'd
miss out on the features of Telcanto for browsing my collection and
editing playlists etc.

Then I discovered something, which is now my 3rd option... the Nevo SL
(www.mynevo.com). This is a dedicated remote control, running Windows
CE (apparently) internally... but I have not been able to figure out if
it can run 3rd-party applications (such as Telcanto), or if the software
built in to it is hard-wired. Now if I can get Telcanto running on that
remote, it would be worth the money (to me), as it would act as a
dedicated IR remote control for most of my kit, but still provide me
with the functionality I want to control SlimServer.

Has anyone here had any experience with this remote? Or any similar
device that could solve this ever increasing problem?

Cheers!

[slim] Browse Artwork - categorise pages by letter, not page number?

2005-08-10 Thread alex_london

In browse artwork, the pages are split up in an "arbitrary" size (i.e.
in my case 50 items per page). With over 1,500 albums, it's quite hard

lot of trial and error involved in finding the right page!

[slim] Re: SB2 Remote control clashing

2005-07-28 Thread alex_london

Does the SB2 remote send both codes at the same time (slim devices &
JVC)?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm considering purchasing a 2nd SB2 for
my bedroom. However, I have an IR receiver there, which sends the IR
codes to my satellite box in the living room (and there's an IR sender
in the living room sending the signal to the box). This way I can
control what I'm watching on the TV in the bedroom.

With a 2nd SB2, the one in the living room will be receiving the codes
from the IR sender, so i'd be messing it up whenever I use the remote
control in the bedroom..

If the remote sends both codes, I could disable JVC on one SB2, and
disable "Slim_Devices_Remote" on the other, and that would solve it!

I just want to know for sure before I go out and buy another SB2!

Thanks
Alexis

[slim] SlimServer 6.1.1 missing tracks with long filenames

2005-07-25 Thread alex_london

I recently upgraded to 6.1.1 (from 6.0.2) and 2 of my tracks went
missing. After doing some digging I discovered they were both tracks
with quite long filenames. However these were both visible in 6.0.2.

Just to make sure it was a filename issue (as opposed to a tag issue),
I copied both tracks and renamed the copied versions with much shorter
names, and they were both visible.

The files don't show up in "Browse Music Folder" either. Is there a new
limit on filename/path length in 6.1.1?

I'm attaching log files with --d_scan for both 6.0.2 and 6.1.1.

Thanks!
