[slim] Free to a good home: SB3 with bad left analog channel

2021-04-07 Thread benh

Squeezebox 3
Silver with Slim Devices logo
Left analog channel is gone, but worked fine with a DAC the last time I
used it.

No power supply, no remote. Free for the cost of shipping.

If you want the original box, I can send that, or I can put it in as
small a package as is safe to reduce cost.

If you want my 'Transporter'
I'll throw this in and cover shipping for the Transporter.

[slim] Transporter for sale

2021-03-10 Thread benh

I'm not sure if this is permitted or not. The rules say no, but others
seem to have done so for a long time, so I'm not sure if it's a stale
rule. If I can't do this, please feel free to delete/ignore.

I'm parting with my Transporter, circa Oct 2016

- Slim Devices logo
- Black with Transnav knob
- Includes remote and antennas, but the box is long gone.

It is in great shape and was working perfectly when I pulled it from
service a couple days ago.

I only used the RCA analog outs, so I can’t vouch for the digital outs,
but have no reason to think they're not working.

Cosmetically, there are a few very minor scuffs/scratches on the top
from other components being stacked on it, but it is otherwise in great
shape.

I’m probably underselling the cosmetic condition a bit; you’ll likely be
pleased. Click on the thumbnails for detailed photos.

VFD is still pretty bright, but exhibits some fading.

$500 plus shipping, or make me an offer.

Doh. I just logged bug 4521! I have now marked it as a dupe of 4520.

You mention a memory consumption issue that may lead to other
problems.

Would that look something like this:

Out of memory during large request for 67112960 bytes, total sbrk()
is 511858688 bytes at /usr/local/slimserver/Slim/Display/Graphics.pm
line 487.

and cause SS to die?

[slim] RSS News Ticker feeds not cycling through on Transporter

2006-11-17 Thread benh

I've recently started having a problem with the RSS Ticker on my
Transporter. It's not cycling through feeds like it used to. (I'm
also suddenly having a problem with SlimServer crashing, but don't have
that debugged enough yet to post about)

System information:
SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - freebsd - EN - iso-8859-1
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i386-freebsd-64int
MySQL Version: 5.0.24a
FreeBSD 6.x server
Currently have --d_plugins, --d_server and --d_memory debugging flags
enabled.

I have the MusicInfoScreen, Weather Date and Time and Lazy Search 2 3rd
party plugins installed on SlimServer.

I am running MusicInfo and Lazy Search on the Transporter. I am not
running Weather Date and Time on the Transporter. I am running all
three on my SB3.

Basically, whatever feed is the first (BBC news in this case) just
keeps scrolling a single headline, not cycling through multiple
headlines, and not moving on to the next RSS feed.

This only happens on the Transporter. The SB3's RSS ticker is working
as expected.

At first, I suspected the MusicInfo Screen plugin was the culprit, as
I'd recently installed a new version of that, but I disabled that
plugin, killed and restarted Slimserver, but the problem persists.

Then, I suspected LazySearch, as I recently installed a new version of
that. Same procedure, no dice.

Then, I suspected the final third party plugin I've got running:
Weather Date and Time. Same procedure, no dice.

Then, I suspected perhaps the BBC RSS feed was hosed, so I removed that
feed from the config, killed and restarted SlimServer. The problem
persists.

Looks like Slimserver is fetching the subsequent feeds, but they're not
being displayed. For example, right now, a single headline from CNET
about interviewing Bill Gates and PS3 sales is displaying. The logs
show that feed being fetched. Next up is Yahoo, and the logs show that
being fetched. But Yahoo's ticker is never displayed:

2006-11-17 14:13:41.8052 RSS: Fetching next feed:
http://news.com.com/2547-1_3-0-5.xml
2006-11-17 14:13:41.8101 Formats::XML: async request:

2006-11-17 14:14:54.5186 Formats::XML: caching parsed XML for 300
seconds

Then, I realized that maybe the SB3 was causing the feed fetches, so I
unplugged it from power. SlimServer still fetches new feeds but still
fails to display them on the Transporter.

Any ideas?

[slim] Re: RSS News Ticker feeds not cycling through on Transporter

2006-11-17 Thread benh

Update:

I may have been mistaken about the fetching. After posting, I kept an
eye on the logs some more and SlimServer refetched the same feed:

2006-11-17 14:14:50.9423 RSS: Fetching next feed:
http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/business
2006-11-17 14:14:50.9451 Formats::XML: async request:

seconds
2006-11-17 14:17:12.8769 RSS: Fetching next feed:

2006-11-17 14:17:12.8789 Formats::XML: got cached XML data for
http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/business

So I turned the Transporter off and then back on using the power button
on the remote.

2006-11-17 14:27:39.1359 RSS: Left screensaver mode
2006-11-17 14:27:50.4424 RSS: Fetching next feed:

2006-11-17 14:27:50.4650 Formats::XML: caching parsed XML for 300
seconds

and now it's *not* fetching subsequent feeds.

I then physically removed power from the Transporter and then plugged
it back in.

It began displaying the same CNET news.com feed it was displaying
before.

SlimServer then fetched a NYT feed and began displaying it. But it's
only displaying the first headline, as per my original issue, and
SlimServer does not appear to be fetching subsequent feeds.

Based on that, does it appear that the stream is malformed, or is there
something else going on? The source of the stream is a Telos
Audioactive encoder, outputting MP3 over http. There is then an
IceCast server configured in relay mode that serves up the stream to
the public.

Dunno about RADIUS support. That's more properly supported on the

At any rate, I filed an enhancement bug that you can find at

[slim] Support for WPA2 Enterprise and/or 802.1x?

2006-11-14 Thread benh

Just some idle curiosity...how big a deal would it be to support 802.1x
and/or WPA2 Enterprise for SB/TP wireless auth?

Reason I ask is that my home wireless is split into several segments,
one SSID on a vlan that's secured via 802.1x for personal use and one
SSID on a public vlan (and different radio channel) that's for public
usage.

I ended up setting up a third vlan secured via WPA2 to support my SB
which is running wireless in the bedroom.

I'm fairly certain that I'm a fringe case here, but thought I'd ask.

[slim] Re: Buy a Squeezebox now or wait?

2006-10-24 Thread benh

Well, for what it's worth, I'm a relatively new SB3 owner, going on
about 3 months. Love it. So much so that I'm in the process of
re-ripping my entire 800+ disc collection to ALAC and then the CDs go
into deep storage.

Based on my experiences with the SB3 (and having read all 30+ pages of
the Logitech Thread), I pulled the trigger on a Transporter today. I
think it will be a nice addition to my system and I'm eagerly
anticipating its arrival, if not the impact to my wallet. Eek. I'm
looking around for things to Ebay now to offset the cost.

I've got mixed feelings about the Logitech acquisition. I liked the
small company feel that I was getting from Slim Devices, and I like
supporting small companies, and that was part of my initial decision to
get an SB3. But now that I have that SB3 (and soon a Transporter) I
guess I'm more interested in how well the products work. I'd still
*prefer* the small company feel, but it's not a showstopper for me.

I see potential for both good and bad. I'm hoping that the quality of
the hardware and the attention to detail remain, and that the
(presumably) increased resources that can be brought to bear will
benefit everyone. I'm not concerned that Logitech bought Slim to
shelve them. Slim has several strong products that give Logitech a big
leg up in the market and it'd be poor business to kill those products.

But I also figure that worst case, I end up with the hardware I have
now, and the software I have now, and both work well now. It's not
like the product will just quit working if Logitech decides to shelve
further production/development.

The server software is open source and written in perl, so even absent
corporate support and development, the software can continue to be
developed and improved. Even by me with my heinous perl skills.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you like what the hardware/software
can do right now, get it now. If you're not sure it's a good fit for
you, maybe take advantage of the 30 day guarantee and give it a shot.

If you're concerned that Logitech will orphan the product or screw it
up in some way and you're concerned about long term support, maybe wait
for things to shake out. But I'm not that concerned.

[slim] Fishbone/Firefox memory leak fixed?

2006-09-22 Thread benh

I just woke up and noticed that I'd left my SlimServer 6.5 browser tab

Been a while since I did this, and both Firefox and SlimServer have
been updated in the interim.

So I don't know if something eas fixed in a recent Firefox update, or
if the fix was in SlimServer, but either way, excellent!

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 remote mysqld

2006-09-21 Thread benh

Sounds like maybe you're using sudo?

I was starting SlimServer 6.3.x just fine as the slimserver user using
sudo in /etc/rc.local, and that was failing on 6.5. I could su to the
slimserver user and start slimserver.pl, but could not execute it via
sudo.

Did some poking and ended up adding -H to the sudo flags and could
again start slimserver.pl as the slimserver user using sudo.

Old sudo line:
/usr/local/bin/sudo -u slimserver \ /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl
--daemon --d_server \ --logfile=/usr/local/slimserver/log.txt

[slim] Re: 6.5 won't stay running

2006-09-21 Thread benh

ehlarson,

If you want to use your existing mysql instance, create a database for
slimserver, and create a new mysql user with full permissions to that
database.

Then, edit slimserver.pref and change these lines, putting the
appropriate info where necessary:

dbpassword: slimdatabaseuserpassword
dbsource:dbi:mysql:hostname=127.0.0.1;port=3306;database=slimdatabasename
dbusername: slimdatabaseuser

[slim] Re: No library after upgrade to 6.5

2006-09-21 Thread benh

According to that log, mysql is quitting because you are trying to run
it as root, and mysql doesn't like that, as it's a security risk.

Easiest (and safest) way to get around that is to create a user for the
slimserver (and thus the mysql process) to run as, and then invoke
slimserver as that user.

Could be that that just such a user was already created as part of the
install process. Check /etc/passwd to see if you have some kind of a
slimserver user.

[slim] Re: iTunes 7

2006-09-12 Thread benh

I'm currently sucking down album art for all my albums in iTunes. So
far, it's given incorrect art to about 4 albums out of the 1200 or so I
have.

Of those, all of them were art for different albums by the same artist.
Not sure what the story is there.

I'll be curious to see if the minor additions to the iTunes Library XML
schema will hork up SS's iTunes scans.

Also sort of wondering what the new field is in the iTunes song info:
Album Artist

Just FYI, SlimServer has no issues with the slightly expanded XML schema
in iTunes 7's metadata store.

[slim] WTB: Used SB2 or SB3

2006-08-14 Thread benh

After having my new SB3 in my living room for about a week, I find that
I need one for the bedroom stereo. But I can't afford the $300 for a
new one, having *just* bought the first one.

So, I'm looking for a used SB3 or SB2 for a good price.

Not sure if this is the right place for this kind of post, so if not,
feel free to redirect me or the post.

[slim] Re: Analog VU meters?

2006-08-03 Thread benh

I think it'd be neat to be able to see an analog VU meter along with the
now playing information, perhaps in place of the small digital VU meter
or small visualizer.

Maybe this is possible, but I haven't been able to make it happen with
SoftSqueeze while I'm waiting for my SB3.

Yeah, as cool as that device looks, I don't quite have the scratch for
that.
