Yes thats what I would like. I didn't know there was a screensaver,

[slim] Start-up Screen

2006-09-19 Thread blkwrx

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I tried a search but came up
empty. When I boot my computer and turn on the SB it defalts to the

the Now Playing Screen automatically when it comes on?
Thanks

A portable player would be great but lets not forget that Rio had a
great portable audiophile player that still couldn't compete with the
iPod. If SlimDevices makes a portable play I would envision it as one
that you can plug any usb hd into.

[slim] SB Volume

2006-09-14 Thread blkwrx

So I found a thread on here that said when you are using a preamp you
should turn the volume on the SB up to 40 but when I do that I get
distortion in the music. It sounds like clipping but I use replygain in
foobar for all my files and they don't clip on other systems. It seems
to effect certain frequencies more than others. Ozzy's voice for
example. The gains on my amp where set using the CD player and when I
turn down the SB volume I get noise in the system. So I'm just curious
what the proper settings would be when using a SB to preamp to Amp
setup.

Your right more of a market share would make it worth the investment
but (IMO) I don't think they would see much of an increase in market
share because of it. Most of the people who use digital music have an
ipod or some other portable music device and use iTunes (or whatever
software there device came with) to rip the music at which point the
SlimServer software does not need ripping capabilities. I would think
that most people who want better SQ out of their digital music are
willing to put in the time and research to figure out what type of
compression and software would best serve there purpose.

The install already asks where your music files are which IMO makes for
a relatively easy link between the SlimServer and your music.

I understand where your coming from. To a user completely new to
digital music the setup must be really difficult and confusing. I just
don't think there are many users like that who would be interested in a
SB without getting some kind of portable player.

That being said I also agree with radish.

2006-07-02 Thread blkwrx

First off EAC may be the most complicated Ripping software to set up,
Although its also probably the best. Regardless there are a lot less
complicated rippers like the one mentioned above (dbpoweramp).

LHawes Wrote:

I don't know about the server software but yes it is possible. For
example I have a Rio Karma, there software has a ripping program
included but I've never used it because I use EAC to rip to flac and
then convert the flac files to ogg for the Karma. I don't see why Slim
Devices would want to put the R&D into adding a ripper to the software
when the majority of there customers would rather use an external
ripper. I personally would rather have that R&D going into upgrading
the current software's functionality. I guess they could bundle another
companies ripper with the device but unless it rips on par with EAC or
even dbpoweramp I would say they are just wasting money.

My guess is I would only be adding a CD or two at a time. I'll do the
major music scan before its installed in the car and then I would only
be adding CD purchases. If I ever need to rescan the whole library I
can initiate it using a thumb drive and a inf file like I mentioned
above. I think that's the simplest solution.

Sorry if I was unclear and thanks for all your help.

Well it did work :) I finally played around with some of the server
setting too and disabled some stuff so it will load faster. But I don't
think its going to work for a library rescan because on my home computer
the drive comes up as L: and the D: drive is a fixed drive that needs to
be labeled D:

I am toying around with the idea of just using a usb thumb drive with
an autorun.inf script on it that opens the url. Then when I do add
music I can initiate the rescan by plugging in the thumb drive. The
only thing is with no screen I won't know when its finished but I can
just do it before a long drive or something.

Its easy to disable and enable the write protection to make changes.
The EWF program comes from XP Embedded and is actually very easy to use
once installed. I was going to change it over to just run the slim.exe
instead of the slimtray.exe after I finished getting everything
working.

I am going to load new music from my home PC. I tried to run the
SlimServer from the HD on my home PC and it didn't work. I'll try it

I don't necessarily. I'm putting an SB2 and a CarPC in my car and its
not going to be hooked up to a monitor so I need to automate all these
features. I have the SlimServer installed on a external drive and it
automatically runs when the drive is plugged in (the drive also has all
the music on it). I was thinking I could just have it rescan the library
on startup to check for any new music. It still plays while its scanning
so I wouldn't even notice.

I have idea to initiate a rescan other ways but its less automated.

I was using Nero to try and burn the SlimCD ISO to disk. It worked

Yeah, I know its its own OS. It actually is a modified DSL. Its not a
Bios issue. I can boot regular DSL from the USB Drive fine. Whereas I
can not get SlimCD to even boot off a CD. It must be the way I am
burning the ISO image. I will try to figure it out tomorrow.

[slim] Re: My dream: SB in my car

2006-03-21 Thread blkwrx

It is based off DSL. I had it installed on a CD before but for some
reason now I can't get it to install to a CD either. I must be doing
something wrong. I want to try to keep the Linux OS as small as
possible. Even SlimCD has more than I need to run. I will not need a
GUI but since I have no knowledge of linux I have a lot of learning to
do. I found something called Linux from Scratch which I am looking
into. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks

[slim] Re: My dream: SB in my car

2006-03-21 Thread blkwrx

I'm trying to copy LavaJoe's idea (the SB in car). I've collected all
the parts (CarPC, SB2 & USB Drive for the OS). I'm having some issues
with the OS. I want to use Linux for load time but I know next to
nothing about it. I've been trying to get the SlimCD software to boot
off my USB Drive with no success. Anyone with linux knowledge know if
there is a stripped down version of linux that would be good for this
application? I am just using the OS to run the SlimServer software.
Thanks
