Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2008-12-20 Thread claypole

I use a PS3 with Twonkmedia (http://www.twonkyvision.de) as the DNLA
server, I use Ubuntu as the server (an old 1.8Ghz Compaq Evo), which is
also the Squeezecenter. Windows works well too. It supports most video
formats (I haven't had a problem with any recently) and streams HD
video very reliably over 802.11g WIFI!

I have been using this solution for over a year with no problems.

And of course the PS3 makes a great games box and blu-ray player.

This replaced my MVIX-760HD, which is a capable little box and is now
used in the kids room to stream movies.

And slightly off topic, but then you can play Little Big Planet too,
which is the most addictive game I have ever played :D

Re: [slim] Urg! Pandora may be shutting down?!

2008-12-17 Thread claypole

You can use Tor and Privoxy. So far I have found this to be very slow
and unreliable, so not an ideal solution, plus it forces all web radio
through the proxy too. Ideally you just want a single service using
this proxy. And lastly, if the squeezenetwork passes any clear text
usernames and passwords, these are more likely to be "sniffed" and
captured by unscrupulous sources through Tor.

To set it up:

- Install Tor and Privoxy (on ubuntu: apt-get install tor privoxy)
- Configure Tor exit nodes to be US only, add the following line to the
bottom of /etc/torrc (for linux):
"exitnodes
desync,whistlersmother,lefkada,bettyboop,croeso,TorLuwakOrg,nixnix,inap1,redpineapple,cronic,sasquatch,slowturtle2"
- Turn off ad blocking in Privoxy by changing "toggle 1" to "toggle 0"
in /etc/privoxy/config (for linux)
- Restart Tor and Privoxy
- Add "127.0.0.1:8118" as your proxy in squeezecenter

For windows settings see http://torandskype.blogspot.com/, which is for
setting up skype, but is a similar process.

Any suggestions on how to access a faster proxy and only for a single
service, would be great.

Re: [slim] Wi-Fi Internet Clock Radio?

2008-02-15 Thread claypole

The Revo Blik Radiostation uses Frontier Silicon's combined radio
FM/DAB/DAB+/WIFI chipset
(http://www.frontier-silicon.com/media/releases/07/1212-revoblik.htm)
to be able to bring this unit into the mainstream. At £149 its not
cheap but comparable and cheaper than units with less functionality
(think Tivoli Audio, Vita R1, none of which even have WIFI!). The
sound quality is very good for such a compact unit and as I said in my
last post, there basically isn't another unit out there at any price
that does what this does. It is designed totally as a mainstream
device so I've no plans to start playing Tetris on this any time soon,
but it does exactly what it says on the tin and there are some
interesting plans for it's development.

If you need a capable, future-proofed alarm clock radio, this comes
highly recommended :D

On the Squeezebox development, unless I'm missing something, isn't the
new "Fauxnos" sticking very closely to the original principals behind
Slimserver/Squeezecentre, by creating an open API (Jive) platform to
enable people to develop the concept further? Sonos is completely
closed and proprietary. They haven't stopped making the SB3, but
provided people with the ability to hide the unit that delivers the
sound to the amp, if that is the set-up they desire, while introducing
a powerful handheld device to control both SB3's and Duets. They're
not copying Sonos at all, they are making the Squeezebox range more
accessible and flexible.

Re: [slim] Bedside table solution

2008-02-10 Thread claypole

After intensive research, I have just recently purchased the Blik
Radiostation (www.revo.co.uk), which is a fantastic all-in-one
FM/DAB/DAB+/WIFI Internet clock radio.

My key requirements were:

1) Integrated speaker (one box solution)
2) Very flexible Alarm clock radio functionality
3) Support for Internet radio and broadcast radio
4) Ability to upgrade for future functionality

Sound quality, display brightness, Hi-Fi connectivity, the size and
aesthetics were also deciding factors.

I have written a wiki on how to get it working with SqueezeCenter too:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BlikRadiostation

So far, I am very pleased with this solution!

Re: [slim] Separate stream.mp3 from Admin

2008-02-10 Thread claypole

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SeparateAdminAndStream

Anyone else tried this or another solution?

This would be great as a standard feature within SqueezeCentre. A
simpler approach could also be to use to separate ports for
streaming/admin with separate security settings. Although the clear
text username/password currently used is hardly that secure anyway, so
a stronger ssl based solution makes more sense.

[slim] Re: Transporter broken?

2006-11-17 Thread claypole

Mine died a few days ago. It was fine then it was dead. No response at
all, as per the other posts. I am due to return the unit to Slim
Devices shortly, so I will report back then. Support has been great so
far, although as it is dead there is little they can actually do until I
return it. I have checked the fuse already and that is fine so I guess
it must be the power supply going by the responses here. I am having
to send it back to the US so I hope it doesn't happen again!
