[slim] New usb hard drives.

2008-12-14 Thread davidcotton

Hi

Well looks like both usb drives I've got are about to go on me. One's
just about had it and I don't trust the other. I do have the flac
collection backed up but sadly not the mp3 version for the ipod.

So I'm after recommendations on drives. At this point I'm not sure
whether to go with a 1tb drive x2 or 2 x 500 (1 for flac, 1 for mp3,
once I've reconverted will back that up as well!). I'm also using a
mac mini if that makes any difference. BTW it was toshiba drives that
just failed on me so don't want to go with them again.

Oh also in the uk. Seen a couple of good deals for a)1 tb western
digital around £80 delivered, or b)Buffalo 500 gig for £49.00
delivered.

Nice though this streaming stuff is I sometimes wish I'd just put the
money to a REALLY nice cdp and have done with it.

Cheers.

Well I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but didn't work as easily for me

FWIW the web based ipeng runs fine on my mac mini setup.

Already tried a reboot of both touch and mac.

SC 7.0.0 (I hate updating it, if it works leave it alone)!

Bump

So I can now connect successfully to the squeezenetwork and stream

However I still can't seem to connect and use my library.

It now assigns an ip address automatically when I attempt the process
go through the rest of it then the squeezebox screen just goes blank.

Any ideas?

[slim] Some Networking questions

2008-04-17 Thread davidcotton

Hi

Long post so bear with me please.

Ok I have got the following :-

In one room I have

a)mac mini bought for media duties (dvd rips, slimserver duties for
squeezebox 3) and will be hooked up to a tv via a svideo adaptor (hey
some of us havent upgraded yet!), its also got squeezecentre 7
installed for sb3.

b)Squeezebox3 for music internet radio etc

c)xbox 360.

Across the landing I have the second mac mini in the office connected
to the internet via a netgear wired dg834 router.

I have recently bought a pair of homeplugs to connect the mac,
squeezebox3 and xbox to the netgear in the other room so they all have
internet/network access.

So atm it is like this

Mac mini
SB3 }homeplug___}homeplug-router-mac mini (internet).
XBOX360

Now the xbox360 connects to the internet just fine.

Being a mac AND network newb how do I check that the mac in the first
room is connect to the network/internet ok (atm its running
headless)although the homeplug its connected to lights up the port to
show its active for all I know its just detecting the ethernet cable
plugged in.

Also although the xbox connects the squeezebox doesn't so if anyones
got any ideas on how to solve that that'd be great (I'm assuming its
something to do with assigning fixed ips but have NO idea how to do
that.

Any help greatfully recieved.

Re: [slim] Some Networking questions

2008-04-17 Thread davidcotton

Zaragon;292558 Wrote:
The simplist way to do this is:

Connect the router DG834 to the internet, from memory that's an ADSL
router so just plug the line into it's internet port. Make sure it is
 configured for your internet service.

 DONE AND ITS ON

Connect the homeplug, and second Mac to it's ethernet ports.

 AGAIN DONE

Get hold of a 100Mbs ethernet switch put this in the other room and
connect the homeplug, Mac, XBox and SB3 to it. If the homeplug has
multiple ethernet ports then you may not need the switch as the
homeplug would be performing that function.

THE HOMEPLUGS ARE FOUR PORT VERSIONS.

Enable DHCP on the router but the usually recommendation is to have the
SqueezeCenter server Mac with a fixed address in the same address range
192.168.0.X I believe from memory but not one that is assigned by the
 DHCP server.

This is the simplist configuration which should allow everything to
work with each other and access the Internet.

If you don't need wireless turn it off on the router.

 ITS A WIRED ROUTER.

This may be the configuration that you have but the diagram and
description dissagree with each other. The diagram suggest the SB3
would need to go via the homeplugs, router, Mac Mini to get to the
internet. If this is the case then this configuration may cause
 complications.

THE SB3 IS IN THE BEDROOM AND CONNECTED TO THE HOMEPLUG THERE NOT THE
 MAC IN THE SAME ROOM.

I've never used a Mac but given that it is a form of Unix it should
support a remote terminal connection of some kind eg SSH. In which case
you should be able to connect to it and run a remote terminal. From
there you could check connectivity such as a ping etc.

Thanks for the help.

can connect up to four pieces of equipment so works out cheaper. Not
sure how long the offers on for so best to get in quick. Bear in mind

[slim] Homeplugs

Hello

Decided to get a set of homeplugs but can't decide which. I've seen

the maplins own brand can do the higher rated set for the same price as
the devolo? Also is 14mbps more than enough to stream FLAC/Wav files
over the network?

[slim] Ethernet over power question

2006-08-18 Thread davidcotton

Hi

Intrigued by the ethernet over power option, I've got a couple of
questions.

Atm I have my sb3(wired only)/dac combo hooked up in one room to a
qnap ts101 running slimserver. In the other room across the hall way I
have the pc with a netgear dg834 router and a 2 meg connection adsl
connection.

When I want to listen to internet radio (which is happening a lot more
than I thought it would be!)I have to run a length of cat 5 network
cable from the sb3 across to the router and plug it in. Its inelegant
but it works. Unfortunatly I have to disconnect it at nights as it
could be dangerous to myself and others in the house!

So what I was wondering was is it possible to use this newfangled
ethernet over power to link my sb3 in one room to the netgear router in
the other? Also what would be really good is to have the option of
having the qnap hooked up to the sb3 with something like an ethernet
switcher (not sure what this is called!) with the link from the sb3 to
the router in the other room. Then all I'd have to do is just press a
button to toggle between the two.

Reason for doing it like this is because I like to keep the qnap
seperate from the pc.

So the setup would be

sb3switchboxqnapRouter.

Also if anyones got any comments on what type EOP to use or any handy
links would be most grateful.

Cheers

2006-08-18 Thread davidcotton

radish Wrote:
Absoloutely, or you could use wireless.

Why? That sounds like entirely redundant complexity. Just throw
everything on the same net and be done with it. How do you get content
onto the qnap if there's no pc connected to it?

Its a 500 gig one so I have pretty much everything on there as it is
atm. The qnaps in one room with the pc in another. Done it that way
as I like to listen to music/audio storys quite late and don't disturb
others by having to go to the other room to switch off the pc when I've
finished. I get stuff onto the qnap by connecting it to the pc every so
often via the ethernet connection and copying over in bulk. The
switcher was so I wouldn't have to keep disconnecting the sb3 from
either the qnap or the router connection.

Cheers...

[slim] Strange extensions

2006-07-05 Thread davidcotton

Hi

Got a qnap connected to a sb3 via ethernet cable, no pc in the loop.
Got my music file structure as artist/album/song.

Now when I go into the Browse music folder all I get are extensions
of filenames like bin, boot, dec .lib .media etc. The weird thing is
though it was working ok (had been playing some music)Went to select a
new artist and album and thats when the problem started. Even stranger
is that when I select random song or random album then it selects
one from the drive and plays it without any hassle. I've checked the
qnap and all the music is on there, I've also made no changes to the
qnap (aside from mapping it to a drive on my pc when I wanted to copy
some music across). I've also not made any changes to the settings to
the sb. I've tried resetting both the qnap and the sb3 without any
luck.

I've put the post here as well as the qnap thread as I don't know which
is causing the problem.

Any ideas?

FWIW I am having this problem with the qnap and sb3 combo. I think in
my case I didn't leave the scan long enough. Some directorys are fine,
whilst others have a couple of tracks in at best that play, despite the
album being listed there. Its no biggy for me as I still have several
(hah!)cds to rip and transfer across, so will do a full rescan and
leave it on when I'm at work.

What would be nice (don't know if its possible)is for slim to include a
progress bar to let you know when the scan is complete.

It comes with a UK Plug - you'll need to supply your own Ethernet
Network cable etc if you use it wired.

You'll need a always on Broadband internet connection to listen to UK
Internet Radio - and a way to plug the Squeezebox into your home
 network.

My wired version (don't have wireless router)came with a 10ft ethernet
cable supplied.

2006-03-26 Thread davidcotton

I have a usb hard drive with some mp3s on, do I need both the usb and
the qnap connected to a router to get the tracks from one to the other?
If not how would I go about transferring from one to the other?
Apologies for all the questions but I'm a complete noob at this type of
thing. Also is anyone else having trouble with ogg files?

Just thought I'd double check. The qnap can be used to store the music
formats that the squeezebox can support yes?

Hi Paul,

Seriously thinking of getting a qnap now. Do you have these in stock
atm? Also whats the url to your website to order from? Is it
www.multitask-computing.co.uk? One last thing, is it possible to have
it delivered to a separate address from the billing address? IE if I
went ahead I would want it delivered to where I work.

Cheers...

Fifer Wrote:
The Qnap is small and has no fan. It would be very easy to move it back
and forth for file transfers. The alternative is a long ethernet cable
which you can run between rooms temporarily for transfers.

That reminds me. What type of cable would I need to

a)link a wired squeezebox3 to a qnap? I know fifer mentions ethernet
but is that all I have to ask for when I go into somewhere like pcworld
or order it online?

b)link the qnap to a non wireless netgear dg834 router to copy files
across?

Also will having long lengths of either affect performance of the unit
unduly? I'm thinking of having a qnap tucked in the corner out of the
way and just having the sb connected on the stand. Also think a longer
cable to connect qnap to the router might be a better (ie less hassle
for me!)than unplugging and moving into the pc room.

One last thing, I know theres no fan in it but whats the noise level
like on the qnap?

Seriously considering this qnap/sb3 wired route now. Macs too
expensive for what it is and the shuttle/sff whilst small would
probably still be too big and noisy for the space that I have. The
other decision is the size. Was thinking of getting the 300 gig one.

Cheers...

Curious.

With these Qnaps, is it just a case of using a pc to transfer music
across to it, then when all the music is on, just have a wired sb3
connected to it? So it would be qnapsb3dacspeakers ?

Cheers.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101

2006-03-17 Thread davidcotton

I generally tend to get cds a few at a time, so it wouldn't be that
great a chore for me to just move the qnap back to where the pc is and
rip a load at the same time when I get them. Pcs in another room to
the bedroom and I don't have a wireless router. The qnap routes one
I'm considering, another is a minimac, and the third is a sff/shuttle
pc. Main considerations are noise and size.

Cheers

[slim] mac mini Squeezebox?

2006-03-16 Thread davidcotton

Had a quick look through the forums and used search but couldn't find an
appropriate thread.

Curious about the possibility of using a mac mini as a server to play
back through a wired squeezebox and wondered what I would need.

Basically I have about a hundred or so audio storys and about a hundred
or so music cds that I would like to back up to harddrive and use
squeezebox to play back so I can box the cds up and put them in a box
in the loft out the way. I had been contemplating using a setup using
a shuttle size case with a 300 gig hd and using squeezebox. Only
problem with that scenario is the size and noise of the shuttle box,
small though it is. This would be for a bedroom and so would have to
be as quiet as possible. Also size of the mini mac would be an
advantage as well.

Would 80 gig be enough for say 200 or so cds? How easy would it be to
set it up? What I want is to have it as :-

Mac mini (plus usb hard drive if size isnt enough?)
connected to wired squeezebox 3, which in turn is plugged into an
m-audio 2496 dac connected to a marantz 66 KI Signature amplifer and
Mission 780 speakers. In a bedroom without any other pc present. I'd
use the existing monitor and keyboard to set everything up, then move
the mac/sb3 into another room and use it there.

Would this be doable and how much would I be looking at to set it up?
Also using macs would I be limited to Itunes to manage cds or would
there be other programs I could use (I know nothing about macs).

Cheers...
