Thanks for the info much appreciated. Is there a tool availiable that

Philip Meyer Wrote:
Zapping a song also removes it from the current playlist. This
 probably
isn't what you want. I've never seen the point of zapping. Can
 anyone
 explain the rationale behind it?

I use Zap when I stumble across a song that doesn't play correctly -
eg. if a song skips due to a bad rip from a CD, or if the tags aren't
correct. As I mainly listen to music using the SB from the bedroom at
night, by the time I get up in the morning, I've forgotten what music I
 was going to sort out!

I could never decide if I liked the functionality that it removes the
track from the music library. Sometimes I wanted to use it to remind
me to look into something, but the track would still play okay, and
thus I wouldn't want to zap it until it had finished playing.

How about the following, as an enhancement request, to enhance the
functionality of the add button, so it's not just for zapping songs.

Press-and-hold add button on a track selected in the now playing list.
SB then asks what you want to do - top line of the display would read
Add to..., the second line would allow you to select a destination.
The default destination would be Zapped tracks which would work as
per current functionality. Other options could include other
configurable markers, such as Bad Tags, Bad music, which would be
implemented as playlists like the Zapped music playlist. In fact, it
could also be used to add the track to an existing playlist or a new
 Playlist.

 Phil

Phil

That is a great idea. You need to add it as an enhancement request.
Go here: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=SlimServer

and change the severity flag to 'enhancement'

I have the numbers set in the filename itself but not in the Title tag

using the SB2. But from what you say it looks like a non starter :-)
It would be good though if the SB2 could ignore a user defined set

You are right TITLE By (ARTIST) From (ALBUM) does not show numbers but

So you are saying it is not a Slimserver problem but a problem with the
way that Shoucast sets up its XML listing? I have not seen this before
in over 3 weeks of using SB2. What changed from yesterday? I presume

[slim] Strange search function behaviour

2005-11-05 Thread dfk

When using the 'Search Music' function on the server, I have noticed the
following:

Sometimes, as soon as you start typing the search criteria, results are
shown from the 2 or third letter typed and are updated as you continue
to type. Other times (and most of the time, maybe this is the default
behaviour?) you have to type in the whole of the search term then hit
'Search Music' or hit the enter key to get results.

I prefer the first way, but as I say its hit and miss as to when this
occurs I can't seem to find a pattern as to why sometimes it does or
does not occur. Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

Thanks

Yes, I just fathomed that out. As soon as you hit enter it is no

[slim] Filename format question (not really that important)

2005-11-05 Thread dfk

All my mp3's flacs start with a 2 digit number for example:

03 - Band on The Run
05 - Another Day

This is great because I can keep the album in song order and useful too
on my IHP340. I don't really like to see the number on SB2 so is it
possible to tell SB2 to ignore the number and still put and put the
files in alphabetical order for each folder?

(ignored number) Another Day
(ignored number) Band on The Run

This is the format I have now:

TITLE By (ARTIST) From (ALBUM) or TRACKNUM: TITLE By (ARTIST) From
(ALBUM) if I want to show the track number.

Maybe I am asking too much :-)

Text Entry Timing

When you are entering text for a search, the player will move on to the
next letter after some amount of time. You can change the duration of
this default is 1 second.

3) From the left pane of the server try to play any Shoutcast stream

Bingo! That is the problem! I can only get it to play if I hit the

[slim] Re: Genre Question

2005-10-31 Thread dfk

Michaelwagner Wrote:
Basically, the programmer who wrote that module misinterpreted the
 standard and therefore miscoded.

The very first version of the ID3 tag standard allowed for a fixed
number of genres, and they were numbered. 60 I think. And had an
 enumerated list of them.

In the next revision, they decided this was too restrictive. So they
made genres character strings. But they left a provision that you could
use the old genres, in a multitude of ways:

 1. just a single number - means use the old genre

 2. (number) - means the same as above

 3. (number)(number)(number) - the song fits into several of the old
 style genres

 4. (number)refinement - the song is like old genre number but with a
 text string as a refinement.

The original programmer mistakenly didn't require the opening bracket
in case 4, so your 60's tag was being taken as genre 60, refinement
 's.

Sorry, it's not a simple explanation, but it wasn't a simple problem to
 figure out either.

 Hope this helps.

Michael

I understood that explanation. If the programmer forgot to add (number)
then your left whith the refinement of just 's and nothing before it.

The only curiosity I have with any of this, is that how come no one
ever noticed that this was a problem before I mentioned it? Either
everyone who used a genre of 's was inputting them in (as was pointed
out in this thread) correct English :-) Or, no one is using genres of
60's 70's etc.

ceejay said earlier in this thread that he has succesfully applied a
test of 70's but if SlimServer was at fault how could he manage that?
Just curious

 or whatever you wanted.

AFAIK SLIM doesn't support this (nor does anyone else I'm aware of).

SlimServer does support the comment tag as I have it working :-) But
IMHO comments is the place to put info about the artist or album. It
would be great if Slim could see 'Theme' tag. Surely it can't be
that difficult for you guys here to put in place?

What happens if you remove the leading '? Do your 70s tags dissapear at

This is a good workaround as is the Multiple Items In Tags suggestion
but still, a workaround! It is slightly bemusing that after buying this

Way back when I started tagging my music I used to use the 70's

as it implies something belonging to something called 70, and not a
collection of things from the 1970s! So I then started changing them to
70s before realising that that's wrong too, so I put in the leading
apostrophe. And that's the way I've tagged files ever since... The
leading ' doesn't bother me when browsing the music on the SB or WebUI.

Hi

Fair enough, you tag your way I'll tag mine :-) My point is that why
should it matter to the program how a person prefers to use English in
tags? '70s 70s 70's should all be the same to the software should it
not? Or can someone give me a good reason as to why it should not?

May not be exactly what you are looking for, but you can get something
like this effect by using multiple values in the genre tag (I sense a
certain amount of deja vue in this thread!!).

I've been using multiple genre values in this way: in addition to the
usual sorts of genre (rock, classical ,etc) I've defined a few
others including loud, for example. Then you can just select by
genre to get whatever has that value set. I think my record so far is
something like 6 different genre values on one piece.

The only snag is that I haven't yet found tagging software to which
this comes naturally - I'd really like it to be smart enough to know
that I'm trying to add several different values, as opposed to
assigning a single value of rock;party;loud or whatever. But it does
 work.

NB - this is not a natural thing to be putting in an MP3 tag! Other MP3
reading software is likely to struggle. I am doing this multiple value
stuff only in the FLAC files which slimserver is using.

 Regards
 Ceejay

Hello again ceejay

I should of remembered your previous suggestion! In fact the way you
use tags is a really good workaround to what I want to do. I think I
will give it a shot and start tagging that way.

I don't know that much about the IDV2 tag protocols but I do know that
some tagging software uses extended tags such as 'Theme' 'Tones' and
'Styles'.
