Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?
yea so this is a great question that should be seriously looked at by everyone. about once a year, I go out to see what's new. I've tried Sonos, Roon and Bluesound and know all those very well. LMS is still the most functional by far. Specifically, the Squeezepad app for ipad is still one of the best user interfaces and in some ways, rivals Roon (I just wish the author of it would let me buy it or make it opensource so it can be updated). Additionally, the way that LMS either via "Don't Stop the Music" or "MusicIP/SpiceFly" is an incredible next song engine that no one else even comes close to. Like many of you, I have a very large collection of music and just don't want to spend time creating a thousand playlists. I play an album of what I am feeling at the time and let the system go... it's awesome and everyone who comes over and see's it is amazed at its ability to roll through the collection in a smart way. My issues are what everyone else has... there are still some wonky ways that LMS works. Ickstream, LMS, front end apps all need a good bit of work to get them and/or keep them up to date and I am unsure Michael, Philip, Pippin and all those who have created third part apps have the bandwidth to continue their work on a consistent basis. Once my touch endpoints go, I'll jump to Hifiberry. Tidal and Deezer both to FLAC streaming via ickstream but both have also decided to move forward with MQA so I do have a concern that at some point, they won't work via Ickstream. Future third party integrations are always an issue; at this point, I cannot thank Michael enough for creating apps for BandCamp and Radio Paradise. It is because it is > point and click and comes preinstalled on almost everything Apple and it > just works! > . Yes to all of the above. ;) At the same time, I see the market a little differently. So I live in Chicago and have good relations with two high end audio consultants here called "Decibel" and "Audio Consultants" I too am frustrated with companies like Sonos and Apple and Spotify as they I feel are complicit with it being ok to listen to crappy quality music. Decibel is expanding it's services and Audio Consultant is consolidating. I don't think it's a coincidence that a short time after the move from CD's to digital music streaming, there's been an upsurge in vinyl. Even in crappy home systems, the vinyl sounds better. At the same time, much of the move also has to do with the listening experience -- reading a seeing the music and the artist. And people including me want convenience. The debate about the difference between the purist listener who doesn't care about metadata versus the convenience of digital media streaming is crap. It's the wrong debate to be having because it puts us at odds over the entire music experience. There is no one right way or wrong way to listen to music. We need to stop fighting about our turf and understand that the entire music experience is important: music source quality, ease of use, ease of access, how you listen to music, metadata, and how it sounds. And we have the technology to bring it

Re: [slim] Smart people will stay with Squeezebox
Thought I would chime in here. Yes I agree also with everything everyone is saying which is why I still am with LMS at home. Phillip and Michael and many others have been amazing and we all owe them more gratitude than we can give them. I even tried Roonlabs for their 30 day trial and even through their Metadata display engine is unbelievable amazing, I chose not to move to them. (here is why https://community.roonlabs.com/t/thanks-roon-but-i-am-passing-for-the-following-reasons/31511/4). I also decided to use Bluesound in my office, mainly because their powernode 2 comes in a very very small single package and sounds leap years head of sonos and i just needed it for one zone. However, you cannot discount challenges that LMS has (so a little tough love): 1. with the system being opensource, support for problems is mostly trial and error by the end user with support by the community here -- and that is usually by Philip or Michael. this can be unbelievable frustrating. I just had to install SSL on my QNAP NAS to get the podcasts working right. I am not exaggerating when I say that it took me 60 hours of my time, at least 10 different people over two different forums (here and the QNAP forum), probably 30 to 40 different posts on about 10 different threads, etc.. etc.. and worst of all, I had almost zero idea what I was doing. Most people won't do this, most when they try may break something else while fixing, etc.. etc.. even with my issue I saw over the forums that people broke things not related to their issue and just gave up. 2. to the above point, as 20 year old LMS equipment breaks down and as things need fixing (ie the above issue), you're going to get into Linux and the vast majority of people won't do this. and the ones here that aren't there yet, then they have to make that decision, they'll bail and go to something else. (Bluesound is the way to go over Sonos). And quite frankly, they shouldn't have to get into Linux. 3. there are just a ton of quarks to LMS, especially in the end user navigation, setup, plugins, etc.. the installation of plugins, the descriptions of them, the setup of plugins, then on top of all that, functionality appears to be somewhat hap-hazard and inconsistent and the server code itself needs a bit of love. in addition, there is no plausible avenue for someone who knows nothing about streaming and wants to get into it, to use LMS. unless that person is willing to spend 100's of hours researching and figuring out where to buy stuff, then set it all up via Linux, etc... someone who has a lot of experience with LMS will have to set it up for someone else. Another example of this is I use Deezer HiFi. (Tidal's music collection is not nearly as wide and deep as Deezer and although I can hear a bit of difference in some music between CD and 92/24, it's not enough to justify Tidal). However, to get all of Deezer working, I have to use it via ickstream and use it via mysqueezebox.com. Both ways are completely different in it's navigation and quite honestly, it's frustrating. Each source of music seems to work and navigate almost completely differently. It's stupidly frustrating. My wife, she can't use it. She has to ask me to play something specific because it's so confusing and she is always asking me to put things on favorites because the navigation is so different between each source of music. But I put up with it because I love opensource, I love LMS and I am willing to put in the stupid amount of time to insure it keeps working. The vast majority of people won't put up with it and like I said about, quite frankly, they shouldn't have to. Companies like Roonlabs and Bluesound are making incredible strides. Eventually, their end user apps and server functionality will exceed that of LMS. I hope that doesn't happen and I would love to see LMS stay at the forefront of the market. For that to happen, I think very soon we as a community will have to decide that we need resources to clean up LMS, add functionality to keep it ahead of everyone else, and just make it easier and more consistent. I am wiling to do it. I am even will to pay money and learn Linux (which I sort of had to do to get the SSL thing working). Anyway.. I love LMS and I hope we all continue to stay engaged. Re: [slim] Which music provider for LMS ?
So I've been mulling around the Tidal vs. Deezer issue a lot in my mind lately. But I decided to go to Deezer for the following reasons. Both Stream in CD quality via Flac. However, 1. Deezer HiFi is 10 dollars less per month, 2. Deezer has a much larger database of music versus Tidal -- it's not even close, 3. Deezer does a much better job in their pre packaged music stations as they are segmented out. For example, they have three different Reggae stations. 4. Thus when you do a music station based on a artist or play on of their stations, you're getting a much wider and deeper variety of music. Yes, Tidal also streams in 92/24, but that's a very small segment of the Tidal universe. But more importantly, the vast majority of systems won't be able to tell a difference. I have a pair of B&W CM10's, a Jolida Tube DAC III and a Marantz 7010 integrated amp, a Sumiko S.5 sub playing on Music 5.1 channel. I really customized the center and surround so that they are barley used but just add a touch of color. All together, a cost of 9k and I can only tell a very minor difference in a very small amount of music in CD quality versus 92/24 or higher. Even the 320k stuff sounds awesome. A lot of that is that the Marantz actually has a specific mode for MP3's (settings of low, mid and high) to analyze the music and fill in areas of color that compression takes out. The low works awesome and makes everything sound wider, deeper, vocals especially as it really sounds like the person is in front of the speakers, separation of instruments is incredible. The mid and high are just too much. The only downside to Deezer is that you gotta do it via ickStream to get the FLAC streaming and thus to navigation is a bit odd. But with Michael's artist info plugins, and with Philips Playlist manager plugin, the navigation is manageable. These plug ins are an absolute must. The only reason to go to Tidal over Deezer is if you can hear a difference between the CD quality and 92/24 streaming/MQA that Tidal does AND you actually listen to that music. As the 92/24/MQA music is a relatively small collection, doesn't make sense to get it if you don't like that music. Re: [slim] Confirmation of bitrate?
and I haven't changed anything under file types. yes I do get sound and yes it sounds good... so to answer the relevant question of trusting my ears, part of this is my personal experiment to see how different file types sound -- I have the album thriller in 192/24, 96/24, 44.1/16 and 320 MP3... so I just want to be sure that my LMS is doing what it should be doing... dhallag's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30845 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105484 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Confirmation of bitrate?
Hi Everyone. As a reminder, I have a squeezebox touch running the enhanced digital out via USB to a Jolida Tube DAC III that process 192/24. Is there an easy way to verify the bitrate my music is playing at? I have plenty of 192/24 96/24 files but I always get thrown by the "Converted to 705kbsp FLAC." In looking at a debug of my conversion log, I do see these errors: getConvertCommand2 (382) Rejecting - because required capability T not supported getConvertCommand2 (382) Rejecting - because required capability D not supported for every FLAC file. But I really have no idea what this means. Thanks much for your help in advance. darien dhallag's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30845 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105484 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] How much fun i'm having over the last week...
So i've been using squeezebox now for a week and i love it!!! i mean talk about rediscovering my music. using the controller is awesome. i am going to be quickly rolling it out to other areas of my home. there are so many things i love, there are too many to list: - crossfade - random music creation - the controller is awesome with album art and ipod like navigation - integration with internet music streams/podcasts - pretty hassle free - functionality is wide and deep (thanks to open source) in such a short time being on the market So just a thanks to everyone. i only wish i could afford the transporter and that i had the programming skills to contribute more. i'm glad to see so many passionate users that are pushing to make this the best audio streaming solution on the market!! -- dhallag dhallag's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30845 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64384 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
