Re: [slim] Cheapest way to fix weak wireless signal?

2008-01-22 Thread j . e . f . f

Definitely try the free DIY antenna options here, but if that doesn't
seem to work, AND he can get his hands on an old Linksys WRT54G, flash
it to DD-WRT and crank up the transmission power. Worked great for me
when I lived in a condo building with 10 other wireless networks in
range.

Google for DD-WRT, and be sure to read the instructions first.

[slim] Album art over remote stream?

2008-01-22 Thread j . e . f . f

I have set up an SSH tunnel so that I can listen to my music at work
using WinAMP. Newer versions of WinAMP have the ability to display the
album artwork of the currently playing song. Is there a way to set up
SlimServer so that it includes the album cover of the currently
streaming song over stream.mp3?

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Slimserver on Microsoft Windows Home Server OS?

2007-05-03 Thread j . e . f . f

I mentioned this in another post.

I'm having goof results with SS on WHS CTP, except when using the
stream.mp3 feature to stream music to a software player like WinAMP.
It works fine for all formats except WMA.

I've tried 6.5.0, 6.5.1, and May 2nd's compile of 6.5.2. I've tried
replacing socketwrapper.exe, and I've tried enabling windows media
services oj the server, but WMA's just don't get transcoded.

Thoughts?

[slim] Re: Report on powerline ethernet (five weeks later)

2006-09-28 Thread j . e . f . f

Let me stir the pot a little... Reliable wireless DOES exist... check
out the products made by Ruckes Wireless
(http://www.ruckuswireless.com/).

I played around with these at work, and I was able to stream high
definition video wirelessly -- at 801.11g speeds!! I've since bought
an access point for home, and while I still get the occasional drop
out, it is VERY infrequent... way better than my linksys WRT54G was.

One disadvantage is the lights on the top of it can get quite annoying,
so don't put it in a visible location...

anyway.. my $0.02

[slim] Re: SlimServer for photos?

2006-09-06 Thread j . e . f . f

The HD MediaBox looks pretty good, but since I already have the SS/SB
combo, its capabilities are overkill, and a little expensive for what
I'm looking for... The cheapest one they have is USD $360 without a
hard drive. I was thinking of spending about half that amount for a
deidacted photo-only device.

[slim] SlimServer for photos?

2006-09-05 Thread j . e . f . f

I had toyed with putting this thought in the SS 7 requests thread (here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874) but I thought that
this was a bit too far off topic. So I'm posting in a new thread:

I used to use an HTPC hooked up to my TV for all of the wonderful
things that HTPC gives you. But there were two inherent problems that
I was never able to fully tackle to my satisfaction:

1. I _HATED_ having a PC in my living room... no matter how much I
tried to silence it I could still hear it, no matter how pretty I tried
to make it, it still looked like a PC, and stuck out like a sore thumb
along side my slick A/V devices.

2. Even though the machine gave me all sorts of cool things I could do,
I really only used it for music and photos. So the HTPC seemed too much
like overkill for the relatively simple things I regularly used it for.

So when I began to explore other options, I came across the Squeezebox,
and I couldn't be happier as far as my music is concerned (how happy I
am that I have gapless playback! I can't believe this was of little
concern to the HTPC folk). Plus it looks sexy as hell sitting next to
my receiver.

But I am left without the ability to view my photos on my TV...
SlimServer does eveything I need for music, so I was wondering if there
was a similar option for photos. Here's what I'm looking for:

- retrieves my photos over my home network, wireless preferred, but
not mandatory (ie: a solution that only plays back from a memory card
or DVD is not what I'm looking for)
- can navigate using an IR remote control. No keyboard or mouse. TV
display could be used to browse entire photo collection.
- ability to view the pictures using the maximum capabilities of my TV
(ie: HD if available, S-Video or composite if my TV is challenged...)
and auto scaling to match TV resolution. (scaling could be done on the
server side to minimize network bandwitdh usage?)
- ability to access this remotely for computer viewing over the
internet would be a HUGE bonus

I picture a SlimServer / Squeezebox type solution for this, where the
server does most of the work and "streams" the media according to the
capabilities of the display device (much like streaming to a remote
winamp player transcodes to MP3, while streaming the FLAC version to
the local squeezebox), while the hardware device sitting beside my TV
is JUST for retrieval and display. All organization and management
would happen on the server side.

Does anyone know of somethiunbg that does what I am looking for? There
are networked media players that do this kind of thing, but since I'm
only interested in the photo display aspect of them, I was hoping to
keep the cost down by only paying for what I need/want. The ability to
play music is redundant (nothing beats my SB3) and the ability to play
video is something I just won't use (beyond my PVR, I have no desire to
watch video files on my TV -- a behaviour I learned when I had the
ability with the HTPC).

I appreciate any and all suggestions that you may have!
- Thanks!

[slim] Gapless over internet streaming?

2006-08-24 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

I've just successfully set up my SlimServer for access over the
internet, and I'm now happily listening to my entire collection at
work, or wherever I decide I feel like listening to it. And this forum
has been a WEALTH of information, so thank you to everyone who helped
others out -- you helped me too ;)

I'm proxied at work , so my only option is to use the stream.mp3
interface through Winamp (or other stream player) -- no SoftSqueeze.
Is there a way to tweak the stream so that it plays back gapless at
Winamp's end? I went to the trouble to rip all of my albums in OGG for
gapless support (disk space is at a premium, otherwise I would have used
FLAC), and they play back perfectly gapless at home on my Squeezebox,
but I get a little blip of silence at work through stream.mp3. Given
that Winamp just receives a continuous stream, is it possible for
Slimserver to create gapless transitions?

I am currently streaming the MP3 stream using Lame quality level 9 and
bitrate limiting to 192 kBps. Sounds pretty good on my crappy work
computer speakers.

Of which component? SlimServer? SB Firmware? Where do I find it?

P.S. I'm using 6.2.1 of SS, and whatever the current production F/W

[slim] Menu navigation issue

2006-03-13 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

I think I have found a small issue with the menu navigation. I have
programmed my Harmony 659 remote control to use the Pronto IR codes
found here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/pronto/SqueezeboxCodes.xls

Everything works great (in fact in same cases, better than the original
remote) except for one niggly thing. I have assigned the IR code for
"menu_home" to the MENU button on my remote control. Sometimes (I
haven't found the exact pattern yet) when I press the MENU button from
the Now Playing screen, I am taken to the last item I had highlighted
in the top-level menu (for example, Browse Music). If I immediately
press RIGHT to bring up the item's sub-menu, the SB won't let me.
Instead it gives me the bouncy animation that indicates that I cannot
go any further. To access the sub-menu, I first need to arrow down to
another menu option, then back up to the item I had previously
selected, and then I am able to arrow right into its sub menu.

I'm using this code for menu_home:

Code:

   006b 0012 0029 002f 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014
0014 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014
0014 0014 0014 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 0393

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Thanks!

[slim] What's the difference between SS 6.2 and 6.5?

2006-03-12 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

I've been trying to figure out what SlimServer 6.5 has that 6.2
doesn't. From what I've been able to find over the last few days, 6.5
has "a bunch more features"... what are these features? Are they worth
installing 6.5 and putting up with its beta status for the next little
bit? I don't mind providing feedback to aid its development, but I
also won't trade a potentially unstable system for features I won't
use.

Thanks!

[slim] Re: Now Playing on PLAY key press?

2006-03-07 Thread j . e . f . f

OK thanks.

I usually play an album in its entirety and do not continue to browse,
so I would prefer the now playing screen to come up right away, and
then the VU Meter screen saver to kick in after the set amount of
time.

It's really not a big deal. I was hoping there was an option I had
missed, but I can live with it as is. Like I said in my original post,
I love my squeezebox, and really this is the only complaint I could
possibly make if I was forced at gun point to do so ;)

[slim] Custom Browse Groupings?

2006-03-06 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi

I'd like to set up my SqueezeBox / SlimServer such that when I choose
Browse Music, I can create custom browse categories. For example, In
addition to Browse Artists, Browse Albums, etc, I'd like to add one for
Live Music. All of my live albums are tagged such that the word
"(Live)" appears at the end of the album name name. Can I create a
custom filter and make it appear under "Browse Music" that retrieves
only live albums based on album name? Can I do a similar one for
compilations based on text in the comment field?

[slim] Now Playing on PLAY key press?

2006-03-04 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

First let me say how much I LOVE my SqueezeBox. I just received it two
days ago, and everything has been going absolutely perfect! This device
replaced a Media PC in my living room, since I only really used it for
music anyway. I couldn't be happier! This forum has been a wealth of
information on tweaking it and getting it working perfectly with my
Harmony remote.

I did a search in the forums for this but I came up empty: It is
possible to configure the squeezebox to automatically display the Now
Playing screen when I press PLAY from a music selection?

Thanks!
