[slim] Squeezebox 3 (3rd Gen) music player for sale

2012-07-29 Thread jackaninny

I have a Squeezebox 3 (3rd gen) wireless music player for sale. Includes
original box and manual and power supply. It comes with a remote but the
remote is white in color. Also front metal plate will eventually need to
be re-glued to the body as it's a little loose. I also have an Elpac AC
adapter which really reduces line noise compared to the stock AC
adapter. Since this is sort of a specialized device I thought I would
offer it up here first before posting on Ebay. If you are interested
send me a message. Overall the unit is in very nice condition.

If this post is against board guidelines please delete.

Sonos just added Airplay support to their current line via an Airport

I was right to be somewhat suspicious of the announcement, it isn't
quite what it appears. Sonos aren't really implementing AirPlay. They
are just plugging an AirPort Express into the line in on one of their
 boxes.

So the question is still open ;)

Apple has said they are licensing Airplay (both audio and video
streams) but it's a hardware AND software combo system. Obviously Sonos
can't change their hardware in the field so they are using the Airport
Express to bootstrap the software upgrade they just sent out.

A plugin should allow you to stream either from iTunes to an SB player
-OR- stream from an iOS device to an SB player. Both of these options
would be very handy for me.

2011-04-11 Thread jackaninny

 It's about competition and control.

AFAIK Apple hasn't made an AirPlay player for a PC.

Airplay video has been hacked as the protocol is fairly open (so far)
and some basic non Apple clients have been built for Linux and Windows.
If competitive products to AppleTV start supporting Airplay perhaps
 things may change.

Airplay audio still uses the old AirTunes protocol aka RAOP. This used
to be open and a few open source projects were started and then the
protocol was encrypted and development stopped. Although recently new
efforts are being made to break the encryption such as RAOP support has
been added to MPD but this approach won't help SBS support by Logitech.

Apple didn't/hasn't released a version to stream TO a computer only
FROM a computer to an iOS device. In order to go that direction your
need AirPlayer or AirFrame (iOS to iOS). JBL is shipping their
speaker/dock that is AirPlay enabled
(http://www.onair.jbl.com/usa_onair.aspx) and Denon has a AV receiver.
It's been confirmed that Apple does license AirPlay for audio (video is
rumored to be coming soon) but it seems it's only for hardware at this
point. Since Apple doesn't make their own speakers, televisions, AV
equipment I doubt it's about competition - more likely just behind the
curve on a broad rollout for the program itself.

Re: [slim] Need help with local radio station stream

2011-03-20 Thread jackaninny

So that's interesting - I was able to tune in both stations via the SBS
web interface - Internet Radio - Local (KKHD is 1550AM)

So where is SBS pulling that stream in from? Why can't I get that same
stream via the Boom interface? Are they pulling from two different
sources for the stream?

I email both stations asking for an alternate stream link but I'm not
holding my breath. Googling the issue it seems like the Streamtheworld
format is spreading and causing a number of issues with many different
services/devices.

No the Boom is connected to SBS (I use that 99% of the time for my
devices). I just went and tested it again and I can goto the Internet
Radio - Local - find the station and hit the play button on the boom
and the stream title comes up but no sound. I started fiddling and if I
hit the fast forward button on the Boom the stream buffers and then
starts playing! It's not across all stations but for sure happens with
the two I originally posted about and I noticed also 99.5FM behaves the
same. The local public broadcasting station (91.5FM) works as normal.

I'm using 7.5.3 of SBS running on Linux (Ubuntu):

Two weeks ago I could stream these stations to my Boom and Squeezebox -
KPAM (http://www.kpam.com/) and KKHD (http://www.1550kkad.com/)

Now I cannot play them - looks like it's trying to play on the Boom but
no sound. It looks like they changed to Streamtheworld embedded Flash
player. Is there no way around this? Radiotime looks like they still
have the old WMA (I believe that's what it used to be) links and I've
reported the issue to them.

[slim] For Sale - Two Squeezebox 3 Units

2009-12-01 Thread jackaninny

I'm swapping out a couple of my Squeezebox 3 units for the Duet
receivers and I thought this would be the best place to find them a good
home. Both units have been gently used and are in great condition. I
have everything for each unit including box, remote, power supply,
cables and even the 'MP3 Is Not a Crime' sticker. They are both the
black unit with silver front.

I'd like to get $200 each or $350 for the pair. Shipping would be UPS
Ground for $15 unless you wanted to pay for faster service. I'm also
open to listing on Ebay as a Buy It Now if that makes you more
comfortable.

Hope this post is OK here since there is no marketplace. Admin feel
free to remove if needed.

I feel the need to respectfully correct you. Technically you don't
HAVE TO go through the AppStore. Apple's heavy handed tactics for
controlling the platform has many developers upset. Waiting endlessly
to have apps approved (and often not being approved for ambiguous
reasons), together with their ultra-restrictive terms in the SDK
agreement, has many developers pretty fed up.

The AppStore was supposed to kill the iPhone Jailbroken apps, but seems
to still be feeding the need for it.

The AppStore is obviously the best way to profit from iPhone
development. It has wide spread distribution access to potentially
every single iPhone user. But many developers are still making money
by selling Jailbroken apps via Cydia, when Apple feels the need to
restrict their trade. Jailbreaking is safe, easy, and opens the
 iPhone's full potential.

I can only hope that if for some reason, known only by Apple, Luke's or
your apps get rejected, that you will consider going the Cydia route.

Good luck to both of you, and we all look forward to the fruits of your
 labors.

P.S. A Sonos controller app just showed up in the AppStore today.

i'm not sure which developers you are referring to but many developers
are finding quite a bit of profit going through the app store and very
satisfied with the ease of distribution and payment collection. the
developers that are unhappy with the approval process with legitimate
reasons are a small minority. also i believe apple is loosening the
ultra-restrictive terms ( see the removal of the NDA) as the process
and app store mature.

sorry if i sound like apple apologist but i think people should
recognize that apple is working with a entirely new model of software
distribution on a totally new platform. have they made mistakes? yes.
have they made changes for the better? yes. is the app store as it
stands one of the best distribution platforms out there? yes and
probably by a fair margin.

bottom line - jailbreaking is fine but for the author it means 1)a
fraction if any compensation for their efforts 2)a much smaller
audience for their software.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-29 Thread jackaninny

i've been watching and following slim since the first days. i currently
have 4 squeezebox3 units and have resold my older units to friends and
family. i have too say that this announcement brings a bit of sadness
to my life. although i know there are examples of
megacorp-buys-little-guy-hero-and-little-guy-conquerors but those are
very few and very far between. i do not feel i've been sold down the
river by sean et al. they hopefully have enough financial security for
the rest of their life and that opportunity is increasingly rare these
days.

that being said...

i hope that if logitech decides to 'consumerize' slim products that
they continue to support the current development model and product
niche. for the people writing add-ons and working on the base i hope
they see some sort of program to make it worth their time to continue.
bottom line is that the slim products NEVER would have born inside a
company the size of logitech so please take care when you decide to
'improve' the product and process.

your new sales and previous work. All of a sudden you find out that you
are no longer going to get commissions owed to you because it has been
hijacked by some guy (or guys) over in Russia. They found some way to
stiff you out of your rightfully earned commissions for sales made.
Worst part is its not just one years commissions, it is forevermore.
And to add insult to injury you now have scads of people cheering in
the bacground all across the world asking for (and recieving) the way
to help themselves to the work you produced further reducing your
commissions. Soon they ALL begin taking advantage of this same security
breach that reduces your commissions. To add insult to injury, before
this all began you told everybody (in writing) that you didn't want
your works to be reproduced and placed on the Internet because you were
 afraid someone would steal it.
 ...

would it be fair and economically feasible if that salesperson received
a commission on the sales that his customers made? if he then got those
commissions for almost 100 years AFTER he died? even if he left the
company and another saleperson took over his accounts and managed them?
what if the customers had to get written permission from the salesperson
before any and all new transactions? i will leave the multiple examples
of riaa/consumer lawsuits and the saleperson analogy to your
imagination.

1) copyright law is broken almost entirely and we are in danger of
watching our culture stagnate and we have handed the future over to
corporate america to dictate what, when, where and how long we can
enjoy a work. for evidence see drm, hdcp, hd-dvd, pvp-opm, etc etc.

2) we have, and are, creating an environment where EVERYONE is in
perpetual violation of copyright law - ask the russians how they felt
under the soviet regime.

i am also pro-artist but i also believe that many of them are complicit
in the destruction of public rights. i also believe many of them are
living in a fantasy world if they think they can extract the same
profits margins as the greater world market opens up. don't expect a
household in china to pay $15 bucks for a cd. when major labels start
installing hidden software on my personal computer and that software
makes my personal systems vulnerable in terms of stability and security
well they can just go pound sand. the marketplace has made it quite
obvious how they want their music and the industry has stalled and told
us how wrong we are and then started to make us into criminals. how
sorry do i feel for an artist who signed a contract with the likes of
these corporations? no not very sorry. it seems many artists and
companies have been able to make some money by actually addressing
consumer wants without making them into criminals. see mangatunes,
pandora, and cdbaby for a few examples of proconsumer and proartist
policies.

i guess my point is that if you decide to make me into a criminal by
asserting my personal rights don't be surprised if my perceived value
of your work is diminished. we've seen where this cycle has led so far
- will the artists rise up and change the future?

Regardless of how you personally feel about it, society as a whole
decided, not just for music but for all copyright issues, decades ago,
that copyrights last for some period of time after the copyright holder
 has died (I think it's 50 years).

Notice that has nothing to do with the artist. The copyright holder is
the person who wrote the music, the words or both. S/He might even be
alive, even though the performer is dead. It often happens that they
don't die at the same time :-)

first - i believe it's life plus 70 years for works published after
1977 and 95 years if it's a corporate work. 'as a society' in 1998 'we'
passed copyright term extension act which extended the term by another
20 years from the previous 50. the same 1998 act works created in 1923
or after will enter the public domain until 2019 and in many cases that
date is even in question. have something create before 1978 but not
registired for copyright protection? don't worry it's covered in the
same 1998 act and will not enter the public domain until 2047. all of
this legislation is private and corporate welfare plain and simple and
at the expense of our society and culture.

perhaps someone could tell me how this benefits the general public and
why we, the public, should subsidize the next 3 generations or more of
a particular artist?

well if you chop up and paraphrase then anything can mean just about
everything. once again from the constitution - article I, section 8,
clause 8:

to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for
limited times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their
respective Writings and Discoveries.

key words and phrases 'limited' 'to promote the progress'

nowhere does it say to provide for 3 future generations of the authors
family nor does it talk about the ability of a corporation to own
anything for a century or longer. very little of the current system
respects the founding fathers intentions as written in the
constitution.

so no i did not invert anything and i stand by what i said.

Nowadays, I'm much more choosy, and have a strong preference to try
before I buy. And that's where places like allofmp3.com come in. I can
listen to a whole album (albeit in mono) for free - not just pathetic
30-second introductions. (This means I can listen to a whole load of
things that I'd always wondered about, but had never quite got round to
listening to, and so it's actually broadening my horizons; though
admittedly, by-and-large this just means I have a long list of
bookmarks to things that I might listen to sometime, but haven't got
round to yet.) If I decide it's worth further investigation, I can
download a good-quality version for a pittance, and try it out for a
while. If I decide it's good enough to keep, and that the artist
deserves my support, then I'll buy the CD (usually online - record
shops are no longer the little Meccas that they once were to me).
 ...

P.S. Hmm, reading over this again, I feel duty-bound to point out that
I don't really think the music industry is so entirely jaded and
washed-out as my comments above might imply. For example, I do
recognise that improvements in technology mean that earlier CD releases
can be bettered; and there are some excellent examples of budget-price
remasters (e.g. the Rhino Yes series). And there are numerous labels
(such as ECM and Hyperion) where what they do is clearly a labour of
 love.
 ...

ditto.

allofmp3.com allows me to get a reasonibly high quality copy of new
music without DRM that i can listen to HOWEVER AND WHEREVER I WANT. if
i like the album i always buy the disc and rip into my preferred
format. essentially allofmp3.com has become a place where i can pass
judgement on an album for $1.92 instead of $14.99. allofmp3.com has
actually INCREASED my cd purchases perhaps because i am a more
satisfied consumer - something the mainstream industry currently is not
concerned with or addressign in the least.

magnatunes.com and cdbaby.com are also favorite spots for me as i find
the REAL music happening at that level.

PEOPLE! buy a new cabinet if it's a problem - the
bestbuy-chrome-metal-tube-and-glass cabinet you bought in the 80's
needs to be updated anyway. better yet get rid of the tape deck vcr
you use once a month we recently made these breakthroughs using space
shuttle technology called music cds and dvds.

if all else fails take notice that the new case looks nice enough
to...horror-of-all-horrors...put it ON TOP OF your stupid cabinet!

i've put my order in for a sb3 just to spite all of the whining little
b!tches with 'cabinet problems' - if i hear one more complaint i'm
taking a sledgehammer to my sb2 and i'll post the pictures here just to
rub it in your face that there is one less sb2 available to solve your
earth-shattering-music-experience-ending problems.

NOW i feel better :-)

That's too bad. While I like the new design, I still also need a
horizontal design that will fit in my stereo cabinet conveniently.

Given that the Squeezebox is only usable when connected to a stereo,
the new vertical form factor seems odd to me when presented as the
only offering. As an alternate choice, yes, but as the only
 product?

I guess I'll be searching ebay for my next Slim Devices
  purchase ... :-(

Unfortunately I also have the same view. At the moment my SB's
are all in racks/spaces where a higher form factor wouldn't work.

 I love the Squeezebox (1 sb1, 2 sb2's, further three contemplated
for next year when building work is done, home demos leading to
at least 5 other purchases...). Still, EBay will be cheaper than
 buying them new.

It's not such a big deal for the SB3, since it doesn't add any
features over the SB2, and I can be confident that any firmware
advances will also apply to my existing SB2's.

However, the SB4 next year (start the rumours already) will
probably follow the new form factor, and if it adds new features
 I'll miss out.

Also, I guess that the new vertical board arrangement with
right-angle sockets would make it hard to re-case in a lower profile
 box without replacing the sockets.

[slim] roku annouces 'clock radio' unit

2005-09-19 Thread jackaninny

more aimed at the bose product and that customer...

http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/12685951.htm

Get up! Roku Internet radio rocks on easily
By Dawn C. Chmielewski
Mercury News

Roku wants to replace your bedside clock radio with a gadget that tunes
in Internet radio stations and plays your digital music collection.

The SoundBridge Radio, which Roku announces today, is one of those rare
home-networked devices that was easy to set up and use -- just like a
radio. And it produced surprisingly rich sound quality that put it on a
par with Bose or Cambridge SoundWorks.

The SoundBridge Radio works like its traditional namesake -- it tunes
in AM and FM stations and plays music through its built-in,
high-fidelity speakers. But it also connects to your home's high-speed
wireless network to fetch and play music off your computer's hard drive
or receive Internet radio stations. Those include local stations that
stream their broadcasts online or channels that are found only on the
Internet.

But Roku will have a tough time competing with the audiophile's
favorite, Bose's Wave Music System, when it comes to looks.

Roku's original networked home music player, the SoundBridge, has a
distinctive tubular design with a long LCD display that gave it a
sleek, futuristic feel. The SoundBridge Radio, on the other hand, bears
an unfortunate resemblance to those gigantic home intercoms of the
'60s.

Some people will hasten to note that what's important is not how a
radio looks, but how it sounds. Still, if Roku wants a spot on my
granite kitchen counter, it better look hot, too. That's doubly true if
I'm prepared to lay out $399 for a clock radio, instead of the usual
$10.

But enough about looks.

Roku recognized an opportunity in the growing popularity of Internet
radio, which now attracts about 40 million listeners. The original
SoundBridge let people listen to Internet radio or their digital music
collections through their home stereo.

Of course, not everybody wants to invest the effort in modifying their
existing stereo equipment to liberate the music from their home
computers. The SoundBridge Radio targets this less-hassle-is-more
market.

It took less than five minutes to add the radio to my encrypted
wireless home network. The LCD screen prompted me to provide the most
basic information -- language, time zone, country of residence and
network password, which I did using the remote control.

After briefly restarting, the SoundBridge Radio was ready to rock. A
source button lets you select audio options: AM or FM radio, Internet
radio or your digital music collection stored on a computer's hard
drive or a memory card.

I was impressed with how the SoundBridge Radio automatically found the
music tucked away inside my Mac's iTunes folder. The only limitation --
and it's a significant one -- is one Apple Computer has imposed. The
SoundBridge Radio cannot play music purchased from Apple's iTunes Music
Store, because Apple refuses to license its software to other hardware
makers. (Apple, c'mon, set my music free.)

The SoundBridge Radio works with other digital music services, playing
music purchased or played in a continuous stream from Napster or MSN
Music. It also will play music streams from RealNetworks' Rhapsody. But
given that Apple controls 82 percent of the paid online music market,
this will give iTunes music buyers pause.

Roku added some other nice touches that are worthy of mentioning. It
ships with 50 pre-programmed Internet radio stations, including my
personal favorite, the eclectic Radio Paradise. A scan button lets you
find new stations, just as you would tune any other radio.

The radio also has six preset buttons along the top, which can be
configured to remember 18 channels. Naturally, you can store your
favorite radio stations. But what I liked was the ability to also store
playlists or even albums fetched from my computer's hard drive. For
example, I stored Coldplay's ``XY'' by simply playing the album and
touching a preset. The system conveniently and automatically assigns
names to each channel, so you don't need total recall.

One more thing: It's a clock radio with alarm, with a big snooze
button. But don't toss this across the room when you're half asleep.
You'll regret it.

designers, coders, and admins we try to pound basic and simple security

contributes to overall relaxed security practices. i know most people
are not designing spy satellites for the nsa but good design makes a

[slim] Re: Remote Delays?

2005-04-25 Thread jackaninny

well doesn't totally freeze but overnight it might lose 5 hours or so.
press any button and it could take minutes for the sb2 to respond and
the clock to count up to the correct time. very very strange.

running 6.0.1 and winxp with lots of cpu, mem and hd space
