I've been lurking some of the discussion as I own a few Sonos boxes. The

I see I number of posters saying "they won't buy a locked ecosystem
again" and then day they are looking at

Good advice. not every phone has reverse color built in (my moto doesn't
but my wife's Samsung does I think) - there are free apps that do this
though.

Op could also try Orange Squeeze (has a light and dark theme) and
Squeeze Ctrl which has custom background colors.

Slightly OT - but may thanks to Pippen for making iPeng accessible to

Re: [slim] Replacement system recommendations

2014-09-10 Thread johnas

Hi, are you running the player wireless and if so have you looked into
the wireless signal where the player is located. The lms information
page lists the signal strength.

Check the power supply, make sure it is seated and not causing a
problem if you jiggle it.

The SB3 WiFi cards becoming unseated is also a problem some have
reported (even if running wired). Reseat the card or last resort remove
it.

Hopefully others will provide additional guidance, report back if you
figure out!

Squeezeplug requires very little configuration when running on supported
hardware, squeezelite. ( the player plugin) has good sync.

I would try and trouble shoot your hardware issues first before pulling

Also, if you are happy with LMS and the Squeezebox eco system there are
lots of options for building your own players (PiCoreplayer on RPi,

Re: [slim] Music system for a disabled person?

2012-10-11 Thread johnas

Sounds like fine motor skills are limited?

A switch enabled mp3 player is probably what you need. There are
adapter(s) that interface with (older) iPods or dedicated switch
players.

If a computer is the desired option then you could pair it with a darci
switch box + switches + some morse code will give him basic access. The
darci emulates a keyboard so if you teach him some morse he could play,
pause skip, open, close etc any program that supports keyboard
shortcuts.

I think the Apple music application in iOS has switch access but I
don't know for sure. Ipeng supports Voice over, usually it then can
also be accessed via switch.

My advice is to talk to an occupational therapist who works with this
type of assistive tech- it will be worth it

Reneallard, Slacker Premium is not available in Canada. Slacker does
not offer this subscription option here on any platform. Slacker Radio

unlimited song skips, mobile device support). Slacker Canada seems to

For long lists some apps have a tab that will appear when you swipe.

Yeah, they do gapless mp3 and flac correct.

- File index is limited. It can serve you artists, albums, genre,
composer and file - SB is way better for local library features, i mean
like Sonos is pretty feeble in comparison
- File index is slower to scan
- it is not faster to play music, actually takes more presses on the
remote than SB smartphone remote apps
- the remote app for iphone is very basic, not as many features as
ipeng - in fact squeezecommander and all the other apps are better imo
- no customization on Sonos, you can't hide, reorder items on remote,
favourites are limited
- the alarm feature is not useful unless you have a dedicated remote
(no snooze buttons or clock on iphone app)
- no kidsplay or kid friendly options
- no native linux controller (also their mac controller is not good)
- no playback on remotes or software playback
- better hardware options with SB (basically for me having kid and wife
friendly controls on SB Boom were a big feature for SB and my wife
preferred boom over S5 and iPeng over Sonos Iphone remote app)

Yeah I agree, fair comparison and clear explanations.

I think by and large for the average user Sonos is probably a better
option if you want to use a music service or have a small local

But as someone who used to own Sonos products I can say there are other
downsides for Sonos besides lack of high rez and 3rd party plugins.

Hi, welcome to the forums. The staggered lines are for selecting
shuffle mode (song or by album). I find I need to tap it a few times to
get it to actually work.

You should be able to play whole albums by touching any song in the
album track list when you are browsing your music. The queue is
replaced with the album you selected. You can also try a long touch on
the album and choose play from the context menu.

I personally find that XBMC is not good for music. Not sure what size

Yup, relying on a remote stream to wake you up is risky. This will be
the same for any device you use.

Yeah no doubt development has slowed. With regards to new features, the
Boom will benefit from enhancements to the server, new plugins etc. But
my understanding is that the IPK3 devices are maxed out in terms of
native codecs and processing, so yeah there isn't much else they could
add.

If you decide to get that Archos, let us know how it compares to the
boom.

Re: [slim] Looking for a SB Boom alternative / replacement

2011-01-11 Thread johnas

Sonos S5 would seemingly fit the bill, though it does not have a screen
at all or a snooze button so you will need a remote of some kind
(iDevice or Sonos remote).

I used to own an S5 but sold it as I preferred the boom. If you like
the boom, IMHO you will lose more than you gain by getting the S5.

Sorry don't have access to a Windows computer, but I suspect it is a
browser based issue. Do you have any limitations with how cookies can
be set in IE? I'm using Firefox 3.6 with no issues. Maybe someone else
will chime in with something useful.

It should not matter where you click, drag and drop should work whether
it is link/non link words or the space where there are no words, or even
the play or delete button.

Are you running an older version of the server or an old browser?

Hi, in the default view you can just drag and drop the tracks to where
you want them in the playlist.

Matt, I think there is some confusion about Vortexbox, it isn't a one
trick pony. Since it is running Fedora one can install a full range of
software on it, everything up to including a full desktop environment.
AFAIK there isn't anything the Synology does that Vortexbox can't do.

With regards to the price, an Atom based nettop running Vortexbox is
cheaper than the Synology 109 where I live.

That said, I am not saying that the 109 won't make a decent SB server.
Are you using the 109, how does it perform?

If the differences between mysqueezebox.com and Squeezebox Server
really bother you, maybe the solution is to not connect to
mysqueezebox.com. Ever. This is what I do. Does Sonos have a website
that allows you to control the devices?

Re: [slim] Boom or Radio for childrens room

2010-02-19 Thread johnas

I bought a Radio for my 3 month old son's room - I know he's pretty
young but I needed a reason to pick one of these up. The sound is great
for such a small box. Personally I like the Boom display better than the
Radio. The colour screen is nice, but I can't operate it with a IR
remote if I am more than a few feet away.

Music IP would be the way to go for sure. If you can't get it to work
you can save your genius mixes as playlists and put them in your SBS

You could look at a VPN service - some have both US and UK based
servers so you have access to services that are geo blocked in both
countries. You can get an unlimited OpenVPN service for about 60US$.
This might be overkill though if you would only use it for your SBS.

Yeah I have the same issue with my SB radio if I move it. No matter how
many times I tell it to connect to my network it won't. In my case when
I reboot my router the Radio automatically joins the network and is good
to go. I suspect it is a DHCP issue with the radio but I haven't had
time to troubleshoot it. Maybe someone else will chime in with some
better advice.

I use Hamachi. It has not seen much development in the past few years

Check out the FAQs and guides here: https://forums.hamachi.cc/

Yeah but the system is only 219.00$ after rebate. With an external
drive this would make a fine low powered SB server.

Same here, I re-purposed an EEEpc 701 (running a stripped version
Ubuntu 9.04). It does a great job of serving my 2 SB3s and Boom. No
issues with a slow web interface, synching etc.

To the OP, you don't have to use Ubuntu netbook remix, the full 9.10
will likely support all your hardware - try the live CD to test it out
before you install it.

Interesting, thanks for this. Whenever I have buffering problems I
assumed it was my Internet connection or 7.4. Sometimes I have
rebuffering problems or a complete stop after a few minutes of the
sound. Do you know why I would experience this with my Boom if the
sound is downloading to the buffer and just looping on the player?

(I have no buffering issues when playing files locally from my SBS)

This is also a problem for me, my SO likes ocean waves to fall asleep
to but our flaky Internet connection means it constantly re-buffers or
loses connection to mysqueezebox.

If I roll back to 7.3.4 are the sounds stored on my local server?
