Geoggy, just out of interest, which firmware did you upgrade your DSL-G604T to. I have this router and I have never been able to get the squeezebox to work with it properly. Other users have reported problems with this router. It seems that the squeezebox would only connect if it was on before the router was turned on- so I would have to turn the router off and on again to connect which was a pain. In the end, I bought a separate AP. Just interested to know how you got it working. [slim] Can slimserver access music with samba or FTP?
I am thinking of buying an Asus WL-HDD to store my music on. This is a simple NAS device which will allow access to my music library from all my computers and will free up some hard disk space. I run my slimserver on Fedora Core 4 (linux). The Asus device allows access via FTP or Samba so I will have access to it. How would I point slimserver to my music library on the device? Cheers Michael I think I'll get the asus - most NAS devices that are standalone are too expensive for my needs and the cheaper ones (such as the slug) have some issues (mainly slow browsing and start up)- I dont really mind running the PC when I need it. well this thread certainly sparked up some interest- and I've learned a lot too. As to how they make their money? At a guess Would I be right in thinking that they can do what they want with the information that has been gathered? Do you not think that some record companies and music stores would be dying to get their hands on the database so that they can sharpen up their marketing. Its just a guess... but its quite possible that they could make a fortune out of selling information. However, I am not against this (if indeed this is the case- like I said, its a guess). [slim] Re: ASX stream support
Hi there- somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but... ASX is just a playlist file. If you open one in notepad, it just contains some header information and a list of links to (normally) wmv audio streams. So it is not asx that isnt supported but wmv. However, if you download the latest beta, you will find that wmv is supported if you have the slimserver turned on (yes- that does defy the object but at least your computer doesnt have to do on the fly converting). The reason you cannot yet get wmv on squeezenetwork is because the squeezenetwork servers have not yet been updated to support this- I'm sure this is fairly easy but wont be available until an official release comes out -as opposed to the beta's. Hope this makes sense Jono -- jonolumb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Unreliable Wireless Connection
Hi there My Squeezebox2 seems to be behaving oddly with my wireless network. I have a Dlink DSL-G604T wireless router and I run WEP security at the moment (WPA option is also available). If the router has been running for a while then my Squeezebox wont connect to it. It finds the network ssid on its own, I enter the key and it times out. However, if I restart the Access point and try to connect, it normally works. I have tried without encryption (for testing purposes) and it behaved similarly. Once a connection is established, the squeezebox has NEVER dropped it. I mean that- its worked for weeks. However, as soon as the router is reset, I have problems getting it back on. The router is running on the latest firmware (August 2005). An interesting thing to note is that often on the wireless signal strength screen on the squeezebox (whilst not connected), the signal will be at 76% or so, then 80%, and then suddenly drop to 0% for a few seconds. I have tried all 13 channels to no avail- the squeezebox still times out on connect. I only have two neighbours and even those are not of great proximity. In netstumbler, only one wireless AP (mine) shows up. I have tried reducing the beacon interval, changing the DTIM number etc... MAC filtering is also switched off. Can anybody suggest what might be the problem- could it compatibility? If so, which wireless access points are known to be rock solid with the squeezebox and support WPA2 (i'd like to move to this but the squeezebox wont connect to the router at all with WPA2). I would ideally like to fix the problem on my current all in one router but if no solution is available then I am willing to spend a bit. [slim] Renaming RSS feeds in Slimserver
Hi there. After deleting many of the RSS feeds I did not like in the slimserver plugins section, I proceded to add the google news feed (http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss). However, there is no input available to give this a name (such as Google news). This means that it is called http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss and thus when I go to the plugins section on my squeezebox it has (BBC News World Edition) on the first option but when I scroll down I see an ugly (http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss). [slim] Re: Renaming RSS feeds in Slimserver
AHA I've sorted it. First turn off slimserver (just in case). Then go to the slimserver.pref file in: C:/Program Files/slimserver/server/slimserver.pref Open it in notepad and search for the google address. (http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss) The following entry turns up. plugin_RssNews_feeds1 = http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss That is the web address field. Next you need to find the name field so click find next to get the next entry with the google address. This entry turns up. plugin_RssNews_names1 = http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=entab=wnq=output=rss Rename it to this plugin_RssNews_names1 = Google News The numbers of each entry should correspond (names1 is the name for feeds1 etc). Finally close the prefs file, start slimserver and go to the plugins section on your squeezebox2. The plugins section should now contain the new renamed version. I suggest that slim devices should change their web interface to include a name field for the RSS feed to avoid having to go to the prefs file. Hope this is useful to someone (I guess most ppl already know how to do this sort of thing :) ) Cheers Jono -- jonolumb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Internet Radio - Finding hidden audio stream addresses.
Hi there Many people are constantly demanding on the roku forums how to find audio streams hidden behind a web player (i.e. the mms:// link). This is quite often very tricky to find as many stations have a popup player which comes up in a window. These often hide the actual streaming link which is very frustrating. When you look through the source code in the html, there are no links as everything is hidden behind active x or javascript. However, there is a way round this. There is a nifty program out there that some of you may be aware of called URL Snooper 2. Heres the link for the download. http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/urlsnooper/ With this installed, you simply tell it which network adapter to watch (your LAN card for the internet or your modem or wireless adapter). You then click the sniff network button. Nothing happens immediately. Now go to the website of interest (Classic FM for example). Click on the listen live button and a player pops up. Give URL Snooper 30 seconds or so and suddenly lots of links spring up in the list. All you have to do is scroll down and find those that begin with mms:// In this case, the link was mms://audio1.musicradio.com/classicfm You then copy this to the clipboard and paste it into the slimserver URL box or add it to your squeezenetwork favourites. In some cases there is more than one link. Some of these are copies of the same stream, others are the intro link that you may hear before being directed to the live stream. In these cases, trial and error will soon find you the correct link. Hope this is useful to you all. I have attached a screenshot.
