Re: [slim] Email support is not very impressive

well, I got a response to my 2nd email and now my issue has been
escalated to the "second tier of support". We'll see what happens.

The 1st tier seems to be limited to a cut and paste re-install walk
through.

It's unresolved. Support didn't bother replying.

I emailed support again today and to let them know I haven't had a

I always try the forum first but I have to say, I don't actually find
the forum that brilliant and it's not the first time a query has gone
un-solved. It was simple problem, I explained all the information
needed in the email. FYI, my forum post is here:

I've been a squeezebox user a longtime and lack of decent support is
slowing edging me toward becoming a sonos user.

If so, all those 3 checkboxes there are unticked and never have been

In squeeze center if I navigate to the following:

I get 2 albums listed:

If I hit the all songs button, it starts playing "Badmotorfinger" album

unexpected behaviour, how can I stop it happening? I didn't happen until
I upgraded squeezecenter recently.

I have 2 intel machines running Leopard here. All up to date with

Safari and the default skin doesn't work on either.

On the home page, clicking the main link doesn't expand the menus.
Also, I get the same 1 item remaining on both machines. So clearly

[slim] UK Duet release farse

Just what is going on with the UK release of this product? Retailers
kept getting dates and then when that date arrives, they change it to a

This has been going on for well over a month now.

Who exactly is supplying these dates to the retailers? I would
recommend Logitech get another distributor.

[slim] Softsqueeze problems/questions

2007-07-23 Thread markwm

I have a SB3 in one room and a computer in another. The computer has on
all my files in Lossless format and is also running SoftSqueeze.
Obviously both are connected to an amp/speakers and I control them with
a PDA.

I'm having some problems/questions, mainly regarding softsqueeze:

1. If I sync both players, often Softsqueeze will just stop. Sometimes
it will miss a track and join in on the next track. While this is
happening the SB3 plays fine.

2. When not in sync, shouldn't the Softsqueeze player be near instant?
By this I mean the tracks should load faster given the location of
slimserver is on the same computer(http://localhost:9000). So why then
does it act no quicker than the SB3 which is streaming wirelessly from
the computer? or is the answer that slimserver is sending tracks to my
router and then back into the same computer using the wifi connection?
If this is the case is there any way to stop this?

The IP address of the softsqueeze comes up as 127.0.0.1:3302

3. By using Softsqueeze am I comprimising on sound quality? I haven't
tested but how does softsqueeze compare to iTunes, or Foobar?

4. In softsqueeze prefs there's an 'audio mixer' pref. The choosen
option is 'primary sound driver' but also listed is every port on my
soundcard with "emulated" at the side. What's all this mean?

5. I'm planning to move softsqueeze/slimserver to an mini-itx computer.
Is there any minimum requirements or should it run fine with a decidated
audi card?

[slim] The remote control fails the dark test

2007-07-21 Thread markwm

I'd like to see a new remote control for the SB4. Not trying to moan but
a it seems lot of companies just don't know how to design a decent
remote control that can be used by touch alone and not sight. The SB3
remote has lots buttons the same size and distance apart, not layed out
with any imagination. For example, it's hard to feel the difference
between the square and circular buttons at the bottom given they are so
similar.

The SKY+ remote control is an example of a great remote control, I have
no problems using this in bed:

[slim] SB3 thoughts/review

2007-07-20 Thread markwm

Got my squeezebox this week and thought I'd provide a little summary of
thoughts..

My previous setup was a HTPC running iTunes & Apple Lossless files. I
used an RME HDSP9632 Hammerfall soundcard analogue out into a Rotel
RA-02 and BMW DM602 speakers S3 speakers. I controlled this system
using a Loox PDA running Netremote. It sounded fantastic but I had
numerous headaches with the wifi connection and windows. Everytime It
won't wrong I had to disconnect it all and hook up it to a monitor
keyboard to fix it.

So I decided to sell it and buy a Squeezebox and use an old server next
to the fridge to serve my lossless files.

I decided to go with the SB3 over the Sonus for numerous reasons:

- Price
- Sonos requires 1 unit to be wired!!!
- Sonus has been out a long time without a hardware revision
- Squeezebox can be controlled by any web enabled device

I would have prefered the silver/black SB3 but here in the UK I could
only seem to get hold of the all black version. It arrived with
logitech branding, bit dissapointing given logitech isn't exactly a
respected HIFI brand and the logo is a bit Pischer Price. I would
prefer to see a more professional, subtle logo.

I already had slim server installed on my server so once I plugged in
the SB3 setup was a breeze. I turned up the volume on my amp and played
my first track not realizing the SB3 default volume is 50%(why?).

The device is great. At the moment I'm just using the analogue outs as
I haven't yet chosen a DAC but the sound is decent and I could probably
live with it. I miss having a software EQ though, I know there's a
plugin but I had some problems with that and Apple Lossless. I would
like to see an EQ built into future versions of slim server.

The single line display works great for the most part. Scrolling could
be faster and I do have a problem with the Now Playing screen. If I
choose Browse > Albums > Yeild > Brain of JFK and then play. When the
now playing screen comes up I can't seem to get back to Yeild song list
very easily and have to go through the browse process again?

I've been controlling the SB3 via my iMac, the remote and my PDA. All
work great although it is a bit weird controlling music with a web
page, pages reloading etc. If there was a software version or flash
version of slim server it would be great. I don't like how when you
choose a track to play in slimserver it will not play the rest of the
album but it will do if you choose the same track via the SB3 itself.

Overall, it's a great product. I'd be great to see a remote with a
screen for SB4, better slim server interface.

[slim] Sleep text is too small with standard font

2007-07-20 Thread markwm

If I have the SB3 set to standard/default font, it's readable for a good
distance away, I can read it fine from my bed. The problem is when I
press the sleep button, the text switches to really small just for the
sleep information and it's impossible to read from the same distance.

If I set the SB3 to largeast font, the sleep text appears the same size
as the other largest text so why when in standard size does only the
sleep text appear smaller than the specified font?

Everytime I set the sleep I have to switch into largest font size.

[slim] SlimServer on a older G4 powermac

2007-07-17 Thread markwm

I've had enough of windows of my server. I detest it everytime something
goes wrong.

Thinking of getting a mac to use as my server. (I use macs mainly
anyway). Mac Mini's are too expensive, iMacs are overkill so I'm
thinking of picking up a used G4 powermac on ebay, something like a
400/500mhz.

Anyone running slim server with a similar spec powermac? how's it
perform?

Re: [slim] "Play other songs in album" problem

2007-07-17 Thread markwm

I see, well perhaps it would be a good idea to have the web interface
mimic the default behavior of the player given 'play other songs in
album' is the default selected option.,

[slim] "Play other songs in album" problem

2007-07-17 Thread markwm

On my SB3 itself, if I do the following:

Browe > Albums > Album > Title > Play track 5 out of 12

Track 5 will start playing and then after it's finished songs 6-->12
will play, perfect.

However, when doing the same via the slimserver web interface after
track 5 is finished, it just goes back and repeats itself.

Despite the preference being chosen in server settings > behaviour.

What gives?
