Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?

2018-09-06 Thread menno

Interesting to read what everyone is doing/planning.

For me I think it comes down to the fact my 4 year old son can say "Dad,
play me the Trolls soundtrack", and he'll have to wait for me to do it,
or for me to tell him I dont want to hear that again! But he can easily
now say "Alexa play the Trolls soundtrack" and he gets what he wants.
Finally got 2 Echos last month as a test, primarily to work with my new
home automation.

But even the missus, who's been happy to use the Squeezeboxes all these
years, now finds Alexa easier due to the voice control.

So unless I can get Alexa voice control working for the Squeezeboxes,
then I'll suspect the rest of the family will probably end up wanting me
to setup more Echos.

I recommend looking into rdiff-backup, which combines the best features
of a mirror and incremental backups (uses librsync). Also runs on
windows.

I run it on my Dockstar, with two USB disks plugged in. Means I have a
full mirror and incremental backup history. Also means I can plugin a
3rd drive occasionally to backup another mirror for offsite storage. And
I can just plugin bigger drives when I need/as they get more
affordable.

My Dockstar also runs LMS and my Calibre ebook library via COPS. I
prefer this setup as it means I can have one tiny low powered device on
24/7 for all these tasks.

Re: [slim] Last.fm plugin started asking for a subscription

I finally worked out the difference, and why this happens. When my 7.5
server retrieves the apps, I can see it is connecting to
test.mysqueezebox.com (from the apps it shows).

When I tell my squeezeboxes to connected to mysb then they actually
connect to the main mysqueezebox.com.

Is there anyway to force the 7.5 server to connect mysqueezebox.com
instead of test.mysqueezebox? The latter does not seem to correctly
recognise I'm in the UK for some reason, and gives the last.fm
subscription message.

I am unable to upgrade my QNAP to 7.6.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm usually connected to my squeezecenter server, running on my Qnap

So I'm not sure why it complains about a subscription all of a sudden

I havent changed anything on my server for some time, so it cant be

So a bit of a mystery.

[slim] Synchronized playback on PC - will it ever happen?

2010-03-22 Thread menno

I have three Squeezeboxes round the house I would really like to play
these in sync with my PC.

SqueezeSoft worked great in sync for a while, and it was suggested that
this would only improve as time went by. Now this seems to have been
abandoned by Logitech and later versions of server and Squeezesoft
player dont seem to sync well any more.

I tried its replacement, SqueezePlay but that doesnt sync at all.

So after all these years I thought at least SlimDevices/Logitech would
have provide something by now.

It seems crazy that I have a state of the art PC, state of the art
sound card connected to studio quality monitors, and yet I would need to
buy a 4th Squeezebox and connect it to another input on my soundcard,
just to be able to get synchronized playback on my PC sound system.

Frustrated,
Menno

[slim] Audioengine users question

2008-05-08 Thread menno

Hi,

I use the Audioengine 5 speakers with Squeezebox in the bedroom. Sound
is great, but I have had one problem, and was wondering if others get
the same.

When the speakers go into sleep mode after no music has been played for
ten minutes, there is a powering off noise. On my first set of speakers,
this noise was there when I got them, but it got louder over time. I
sometimes use the sleep function on the Squeezebox to listen to music
whilst falling asleep, and the noise would actually wake me up! So I
received a replacement pair from my supplier.

The new set of speakers also had this noise, but much quieter. But I
now get the feeling it is getting louder again.

Does anyone else with Audioengine speakers experience this problem?

Cheers,
Menno

is that the power usage in operation is 14.4W and 6.6W at idle.

It does run Linux, which you say you'd rather not use, but in my
experience this is much more stable to run 24/7 than a Windows OS.

See the third party hardware forum for more info. You may get more
ideas on low power dedicated Windows servers there too.

Menno

Re: [slim] Audioengine users question

2008-05-08 Thread menno

On my first set of speakers it made the pop even with the Squeezebox not
connected. ie I played music, and then unplugged the Squeezebox from the
speakers, and after ten mins, still a popping noise.

But I'll give that a try when I get home. Didnt realise you could setup
the Squeezebox to switch of the outputs when it goes to sleep.

Thanks,
Menno

Re: [slim] Still possible to buy SlimDevices (not Logitech) SB3 in UK?

2007-07-17 Thread menno

FYI I bought two SB3s from Ebuyer, which although showed Slim Devices
logos on the site, actually had Logitech logos on them when I received
them.

But I had to RMA one of them as the remote did not work, and they then
ran out of stock, so just refunded me.

I then bought a replacement (and an additional one, as I liked the SB3
so much) from datakits.co.uk. Both those had the old style logo!

Interestingly they are the cheapest place to buy at the moment. And I
tried to get another firm who I had used before to price match, and
they wouldn't price match; was given some line about how the supplier
said Datakits had no stock and are trying to disrupt the the online UK
market.

Very odd. But I had no probs, the Datakits order came on time, with two
SB3s with nice old style logos.

Cheers,
Menno

[slim] Sync playback is frustrating at times

2007-06-23 Thread menno

I've been really enjoying my new squeezeboxes, but one thing that really
annoys is the limitations when players are synced.

Fast fwd doesnt seem to work at all. And when switching on another
player, the currently playing track restarts from the beginning.

This combined with the lack of fast forward means that when playing a
long 1 hour+ track, if you switch on another synced player there is no
way to go back to where you were in the track.

Any work around for this?

Cheers,
Menno

- b) 75% of the time on Slimserver / 25% on SqueezeNetwork
- c) 50% of the time on Slimserver / 50% on SqueezeNetwork
- d) 25% of the time on Slimserver / 75% on SqueezeNetwork

I don't really care for radio, internet or otherwise.

My wife likes radio a lot, but she's got great FM stations to chose
from. It's hard to explain why she should learn how to start and stop
squeezenetwork in order to listen to worse-sounding music than she can
hear by turning on the radio :)

Ah well this is totally opposite for us. Before our squeezeboxes
arrived (today!), I have been ripping internet radio stations for
years, and playing them back because the FM stations mostly play crap
chart music that we have no interest in...

So one of the big selling points for us is the ability to use shoutcast
streams, pandora last.fm in addition to our CD soon to be totally
FLAC collection.

In fact improvement in syncing of stream playback would be a major plus
for me. And I'd love to have last.fm synced playback, which the plugin
doesnt support yet.

Menno

Re: [slim] cost - slimdevices/logitech

FYI I just received my two Squeezeboxes from Ebuyer. £190 each incl free
postage.

They had the new logitech branding, which didnt show up on their
website. Would have preferred the old slim devices logo though...

Re: [slim] Active speakers with auto power on/off

Thanks, but for that kind of money I'm thinking some small active

that automatically power on/off and sound good.

[slim] Active speakers with auto power on/off

2007-05-27 Thread menno

Can anyone recommend me some active speakers that have an auto power
on/off feature.

I specifically looking for some to go in the bedroom with an SB3, and
want the auto power on/off feature for the alarm clock function.

Cheers,
